Facts and Questions

Q: Where can I get the latest Dolphin?

A: You can only get the latest SVN builds from unofficial compiles or compile the source for yourself

Daco: http://www.nyleveia.com/daco/

omegadox: http://cid-53f64087c2ab7e7d.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Builds/Dolphin (windows only)

nakeee: http://www.cs.huji.ac.il/~elylevy/dolphin/ (linux 32/64 svn builds)

For more links to builds by non-devs see: http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-9.html http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-2176.html http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-2332.html

Q: I get a plugin loading error. How do I fix this?

A: See http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-4.html

Q: How do I get a ROM for Dolphin?

A: It is illegal to obtains ROMs you DO NOT OWN, please only rip ROMs from your own game discs that you purchased. See here for instructions.

Q: Does this game work? What games are buggy or do not work?

A: Please check here: http://www.dolphin-emu.com/list.php?listcount=1 else search around the forums or you need to try it yourself.

Q: I get a TLB Error!

A: This error message can be caused by random bugs in dolphin else if you get this message at game boot then the game needs TLB implemented, try the TLB Hack else wait till TLB is properly implemented.

Q: The DirectX plugins fail to load

A: You need to update your DirectX to the latest, check the links provided in the the thread: http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-4.html

Q: Audio does not work!

A: Not all games have working audio yet, the audio is still in development, see: http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-5.html

Q: LLE plugin says it fails to load "dsp_rom.bin" and "dsp_coef.bin"

A: You need these 2 files in order to use LLE. They are copyrighted, so they are not included in the dolphin source or builds, sorry.

Q: I get an error: "Failed to grab 1GB of contiguous memory"

A: you might have a program that tampers with memory of other running programs such as "kaspersky".

Q: The game runs very slow

A: Do not expect to get high FPS in all games, Dolphin is still in development and needs a fast CPU to run it (a 2-4+ Ghz SSE2-supporting processor, a dual/quad core works even better). Try enabling Dual Core to speed it up.

Q: The game fails to boot!

A: Not all games are compatible in Dolphin yet, you will have to wait for a fix.

Q: The game crashes at a certain part

A: Note that the emulator is still in development, so the JIT core is still buggy, so do not expect a game to fully 100% work, disabling Dual Core mode or Optimize Quantizers might fix it.

Q: The game crashes, and then Dolphin won't boot anything until I restart my PC

A: Try turning "LLE DSP on thread" off in the config window.

Q: I want to cheat in a game and/or add a cheat code

A: See http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-cheats-database/wiki/HowTo_Add_your_own_codes. NOTE: The information there is a bit outdated: you do NOT need to decrypt the code before adding it.

Q: How do I know if my system supports Dolphin?

A: See: http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-4.html

Q: My game breaks when Dual Core mode is enabled

A: Dual Core mode is currently buggy, so some games will break under that mode.

Q: What is the difference between x86 and x64?

A: x86 is 32bit and x64 is 64bit. x64 version will ONLY run on a 64bit Windows OS (all 64bit Windows OSs have a folder called "C:\Windows\sysWOW64"). The x64bit of Dolphin will have slightly faster emulation speed as to x86

Q: How do I use the Wiimote in Dolphin?

A: There are many tutorials online, google "connect a wiimote to a computer with bluetooth", then use the wiimote plugin and check "Use real wiimote".

Q: I am having problems running my Wii ROM

A: The Wii emulation is in development and buggier than the GC emulation

Q: I want to request and/or upload a game save

A: Please do it here: http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-374.html

Q: How do I find the source code changes?

A: See: http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/source/list

Q: I want to report a bug to the dev team

A: See: http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/issues/list, please only report meaningful issues, be sure to check if your issue was already reported!

Q: I want to compile dolphin for Windows

A: See http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/wiki/WindowsBuild

Q: I want to compile dolphin for Linux

A: See http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/wiki/Linux_dependencies

Q: Does Dolphin work on Mac OS X?

A: It works in GUI mode for GC games with a joystick (to use keyboard you need to launch DolphinNoGui in a terminal). Wii games can be launched but are not playable, since Wii games use the emulated wiimote, which is currently WIP for non-windows builds.

Q: I want to compile dolphin for Mac OS X

A: See http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/wiki/MacOSX_Build

Q: I get a error saying some OpenGL extensions are not supported

A1: Your video card might not support them, check with http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/

A2: If you are using a modern NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, try disabling the option "Extension Limit" in the NVIDIA Control Panel (Control Panel > NVIDIA Control Panel).

A3: Try updating your video drivers.

Q: I am getting an error with the OpenGL plugin

A: Your drivers may be outdated and/or your video card does not support To find out your video card: Start > Run > dxdiag Then download the latest drivers off the main site your graphics card's vendor

Q: How do I use a real memorycard dump?

A: See: http://forums.dolphin-emu.com/thread-3922.html

Q: Will Dolphin support Quad Core?

A: You cannot force the emulated CPU to use more cores, Dolphin uses cores for the CPU and GPU threads, and other parts could be thrown onto other cores but multi-thread management is more a fuss and makes the program more complicated.

Q: How much work have the developers put into this project? How many total lines of code are there in Dolphin?

This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

What to do?

I have been trying to play .wad files in dolphin. On windows, the file loads, but then I get the 1 GB of contiguous memory error and it crashes. On linux, it says that my .wad file is not a recognizable ISO file. What do I do???

how do you load wii saves? like a data.bin file

Comment by TheShadowRunner, Jun 13, 2009

my ps2-usb joypad don't work very well. The analog sticks are recognized and useable in the wiimote plugin settings, but not the buttons! when i try to map controller buttons in wiimote plugin, they don't register, does nothing! i use latest dx versions. Please instruct.

Comment by godisgovernment, Jul 04, 2009

masterkey.bin is not even close to being a "bios", and furthermore dolphin does not require that file anymore. likely you just have to update directx. go read our forums.

Comment by Mordant1, Aug 13, 2009

"Q: I get an error: "Failed to grab 1GB of contiguous memory""

A: Un-install internet explorer 7 and 8. This was the only way for me to resolve the problem.

Am i the only one who is missing something? everyone is talking about this DX9/D3D video plugin, and while it is in my plugins directory, i can't select it as a plugin in the EMU, it doesn't even show up on the list. so what do i have to do to be able to use this plugin? currently i'm forced to use the OpenGL plugin.

also i've noticed that in wind waker, i have flickering background textures. i know that it's partially caused by frameskip, but in rev 4189 (or close to that) the problem was "fixed" so why am i still having this problem?

one more thing, sorry this comment is getting long, the music on the intro to zelda windwaker isn't working any longer. these are the problems that i have found in rev 4203, x64 version. i have noted that, so far, rev 3979 is the best working one for me.

Comment by steve.a.zapata, Sep 05, 2009

thanks! the DX9 plugin is SO much faster, i don't even need frameskip anymore! (which fixed the screen flickering problem btw) and i guess the sound issue was a fluke cuz it's working now. whatever. thanks again, that helped SO much!

All of a sudden I'm getting the error: Dolphin.exe is not a win32 application.???

Comment by j4ck.fr0st, Oct 28, 2009

You probably tried to run a x64 Build. Those will only work on 64-bit versions of Windows.

Time to be nitpicker: Why people still says "GC/Wii ROMs"? As far as i know (and mind you, i have no Wii and no GC), those things use discs, not carts with ROMs...

Emulation scene is still stuck with that ancient word...
