July 12, 2009: In the next few days I will be checking in a backwards-incompatible change that will convert django-locationtracking into a GeoDjango app. The benefits it will be bringing include things like location awareness (it can find which (defined) position you're nearest - i.e. if you create an "Office" item with a lat/lon it can show only a named position if you like/prefer.) and just being cool. Please use a svn rev. of 19 or before if you will not be using a spatial database and have a working GeoDjango environment set up.

This app is built for those who desire (and understand the privacy implications) to add location tracking to their tumblelogs/sites. It is being extracted from a private site, and is capable of talking to instamapper.com (who have a decent iPhone app and Java apps for many other phones), APRS over amateur radio, the SPOT satellite tracking service, and (non-live) output files from hardware GPS loggers.

A demo screencast is available at http://www.adamfast.com/programming/locationtracking/

The intro lightning talk video from DjangoCon 2008 is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61u9Y5Zi0_w&feature=PlayList&p=D415FAF806EC47A1&index=6 and begins at 14:51.
