Sound_Samples

The following sound samples document the evolving sound of din as a musical instrument in live improvised performance. In all these samples, din was played live by S Jagannathan (author). Usually recorded on an Edirol R-09. Very minimal editing. All these samples are licensed under the Creative Commons License

Malkauns (detuned)noisedive.mp309:27December 3, 200922mbFirst performance with Martin Klang as part of another Openlab Open Night at The Roebuck. I play Raga Malkauns with notes slowly modulated down in pitch to create rumble and whale like sounds. Martin uses his own open hardware music controllers like the Blipbox and the Taquito to control Ableton Live and his own software drone bcm harms. We are also working together to make the Taquito as a controller for din.
Jog (+ Blues)open_night.mp320:29October 22, 200937mbLive at The Roebuck near London Bridge as part of Openlab Open Night. Geraldine McEwan on Violin and Evan Raskob on visuals. Robert Atwood could not do rhythms so I got a chance to use din's phrasor, arpeggiator & modulators live. Notice their live setup at 08:00. I love Geri's bluesy violin at 13:15. And din's surprising talking rhythms at 13:45.
Multanijazz_multani.mp305:26October 5, 20099.8mbGrey Horse pub Jazz jam. Max Luthiert (Double Bass), Steve .... (Drums), ....|.... (Saxophone) & ...|... (Trombone)
Marwashunt.mp315:02October 1, 200927mbLive at the Shunt Lounge under London Bridge railway station as part of Toplap UK livecoding event. Geraldine McEwan on Violin and Evan Raskob on live coded visuals using fluxus. I play Raga Marwa and try to withhold Sa (tonic note) for as long as possible creating an unresolved, dissonant, end of the world atmosphere. You've been warned!
Bhairavone_chord_groove.mp309:42June 15, 200918mbDuncan Eagles (Saxophone & MC) calls out to musicians at the Grey Horse pub in Kingston, London to jam with my 'laptop' - "..its a one chord groove.." (referring to a raga staying in the same key since the tonic note Sa is fixed thru out a performance while in jazz & western music a song moves thru several keys). At the start, I set Sa to middle C and play the ascending notes (arohana) of the raga for the musicians to get a feel for the sound and off we go!

Musicians: Duncan Eagles (Saxophone), Max Luthiert (Double Bass), Pharoh Russell (Drums), Tom Whyte (Trombone), ......|..... (Keyboards).

From the now monthly jam with Jonny Sutters. I mostly repeat a phrase (s g m) in Raga Malkauns and play in the lower octave. Was influenced by Hazrat Inayat Khan's essay on the power of repetition.

It was a sunny & hot day so windows were open. I was initially bothered by the sound of traffic and aircraft (you can hear them in part 2) but decided to blend my sound with them. Dont miss Jon Sutters's amazing moving train sounds in part 2.

Joggrey_horse.mp307:15May 4, 200912mbFrom a jam session with the house jazz band (Duncan Eagles - Saxaphone, Max Luthiert - Double Bass & Pharoah Russell - Drums) at The Grey Horse pub in Kingston upon Thames, London.
Bhairavdaybrake.mp309:40April 27, 200917mbFrom first jam session with Jon Sutters. We played Raga Darbari and Raga Bhairav. This is an extract from Raga Bhairav - an early morning raga played at around 10 o'clock in the night! - Yet another tradition broken! Jon Sutters uses drum machines, midi controllers and his own software to make quiet, thoughtful music.
Jogjogging.mp312:32April 7, 200923 mbAn improv on raga Jog. Robert Atwood plays Kalimba, taps the microphone, takes din output and turns them all into rhythms with Variseq. I love my din playing on this track because I listened to Rob's playing more than me trying to play all the time. Its magical. This should happen more.
Dharmavatiushrinivas.mp301:06March 27, 20092.4mbI have a fine record of Mandolin virtuoso U Shrinivas playing this raga with Ustad Sultan Khan on the Sarangi. I used din to match their Sa (tonic / key note) and played a few phrases on din. Replaced the Sarangi phrases with din and edited in the Mandolin
Bhairav33mins02:56February 3, 20086.8mbIts got 33 minutes From the first jam session with Robert Atwood who plays Variseq, his own polyrhythmic software musical instrument that converts the output of din into rhythms.
Bhairav14504:04February 3, 20089.4mb145 And when the beats get more complex, I play in the higher octave to hear myself!
Malkaunswarm_milk05:10July 20, 20089 mb Geraldine mcEwan (violin), Jagan Sampath (din) and Robert Atwood (variseq) provide improvised background score for On Standby, a fringe play that premiered in London this autumn. This track was made from one of the run thrus - the violin is loud and clear while din's volume is low as it was played on laptop speakers instead of PA loudspeakers.
Malkaunsbufo_marinus07:43May 29, 200818 mbOn track 3 of my Rainforest Requiem CD, cane toads (bufo marinus) sing just a couple of notes for several minutes. On this track, I play just g and m of Malkauns with an occasional S and d. Geraldine mcEwan is on the Violin, Robert Atwood plays the Variseq and Evan Raskob strums the Ukelele and plays Djembe. The performers on this track have now formed the Cane Toad Orchestra.
Bhairavscratch_the_blackboard04:15March 24, 20083.4mbFirst jam with Geraldine McEwan on the violin.
Blues scalepodhuma_wheynuma.mp306:06April 11, 200914mbA live improv on the blues scale using a version of din with the notes of the scale assigned to keys on the computer keyboard. All instrumental sound is din, vocals by yours truly. Lyric in Tamil. The title loosely translates to: Is it enough? Do you want more?
Malkaunslive_at_reboot06:00April 12, 200814 mbthe beardos (Jagan Sampath - din, Robert Atwood - Variseq & Evan Raskob - visuals) perform live at Area 10 Medialab launch event Re|Boot in London. This lab is located in a huge disused timber yard so it was very atmospheric and very cold to play in too!
Malkaunsdrone_malkauns0:58August 15, 20072.2mbA first solo tune from early days of din development.
Unknown/Todi or Bhairavi scaledear_mr_harris_jayaraj.mp303:31July 5, 20098.1mbI recently learnt the famous Tamil film music director Harris Jayaraj was my classmate at School (I remember him only as Jayaraj). So I had to make a demo for him. I didnt want it to be boring nor sound desperate. I decided to sample bits from one of his super-hit songs, rap in english with a strong tamil accent, use din to find the key of the song & play phrases on top of the groove.

Malkaunswater_company.mp302:34April 7, 20084.3mbDemonstates the new Arpeggiator and delay features of din.

The following mp3 files are edits from jam sessions with Robert Atwood who plays his own polyrhythmic / melodic instrument called variseq. It can record portions of the din's melody and convert them into beats in realtime.

Bhairavlast_dance02:06March 25, 20083.8mbAlthough I'm whining away, I liked Rob's beats.
Multani01-multani.mp310:37February 28, 20089.8mbRob added digital delay for fun
Bhairav33mins.mp302:56February 3, 20086.8mbIts got 33 minutes; Slower than 145 and it put Robert's cat BenG to sleep
Bhairav145.mp304:04February 3, 20089.4mb145; When the beats get more complex, I play in the higher octave to hear myself

The following samples were directly rendered into audio files using din's live recording feature so they must be played back on loudspeakers instead of headphones as the room plays a big part in the quality of the sound!

Ahir Bhairavmicro.wav00:56September 25, 200711.0mbA 56 second recording of my microwave oven is the drone! Playing din while running this recording in the background, I found a strong resonant frequency at 100.046 which is very close to G2 (99 hz in Just Intonation or 97.9 hz in Equal Tempered tuning). Robert Atwood @ Openlab points out that this is likely as the A/C current in UK has a frequency of 50 hz and 100.046 is the 2nd harmonic of that A/C current! I set Sa (tonic) to 100.046 hz and played this raga.
Malkaunsdownload03:28September 21, 20078.0mbSa is very low at 99 Hz! A drone cycles thru the notes low Ma, Sa, Ma, high-Sa one note per second.
Malkaunsdownload01:58September 9, 20074.6mb
Ahir Bhairavdownload00:53September 5, 20072.1mbDrone cycles thru notes low Pa, Sa, Pa, high Sa.
Malkaunsdownload0:58August 15, 20072.2mbA short tune that came out allright.

And these older samples were recorded live at the author's home using an old PC microphone.

The "short tune" in Malkauns seems ok, and the August 2007 Malkauns seems fine too, but other samples I tried (e.g. "water company" and the Multani) sound rather weird.

hi bhuvanesh

thank you for your comments.

since i have not formally learnt indian classical music the ragas that i present can at best be only considered as a base. however din doesnt restrict the correct performance of a raag by a musician knowledgable in indian classical music.

multani is a difficult raga - ive only started experimenting with it :)

water_company is an experiment with arpeggiation (intoning notes in 2s, 3s etc) and there is also delay which can do things to the sound.
