Overview

With the increasing use of DAISY XML (DTBook, and hopefully ZedAI next) as a single-source master format, many organizations want to integrate both automated Braille production and DAISY production in the same tool chain. It is a primary objective of the Pipeline 2 to improve support for Braille production.

The Pipeline 2 project does not intend to reinvent the wheel and implement a Braille production tool from scratch, but rather intends to leverage off-the-shelf existing solutions. It does not either intend to develop a unique single-purpose solution, but rather fosters the design of reusable and interoperable components.

Braille WG

Supporting production of Braille in the Pipeline 2 is obviously a challenging and ambitious task. It is actually embedded in a larger "Braille in DAISY" scope, which includes both political and technical aspects beyond the Pipeline 2.

Although the Braille production system is objective of the second phase of the Pipeline 2 project (still unchartered), it was decided to create a dedicated working group early-on in the project development cycle. See the Braille WG overview for more details.
