cyanogenmod4milestone - issue #439

Feature request: USB tether

Posted on Mar 11, 2011 by Happy Kangaroo

I've just installed Cyanogenmod 7 on my milestone. I had GOT's 2.2 beta rom, and it was a pain, now my phone works great. You did a very great job.

However there is one feature that the GOT's rom had, and CM7 doesn't: USB Tether.

AFAIK that rom is official beta, so the USB tether will be in the official Froyo for Milestone. If this is true, then cyanogenmod for milestone should have this feature too.

It is a must have for me, because this is te most efficient way to share my mobile internet connection with my computer. Wifi tether consumes a lot of power, so I prefer USB tether more.

How came this feature is not included in the CM7? Will it be included?

Hey, why when I had G.O.T 2.2.1 this tethering was working, and now it is not?

What about this project?? http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/

In the 0.5 beta of the kernel (supplied by motorola) they broke it. Let's hope the final that was released today makes it work again.

USB tethering depends on the kernel drivers. The only 2.6.32 Milestone kernel available with rndis support was the kernel from build 5.06 (aka G.O.T. 2.2.1 leak). Unfortunately, that kernel has many other issues, therefore it's not usable for us.

Possible solution via kernel module is still being worked on, but this is really not a trivial problem. Let's see how it will turn out in the end.

Thanks to Skrilax's work, native USB tethering is finally available in RC15.
