Appeal for funding Laurent Petit's attendance to (clojure/conj 2011)

September 29, 2011

Some donations have continued to arrive after their closing, from donators explicitly stating that it would be better for me to be in the same hotel than where the conj takes place.

Thanks to them, I've been able to book a room there !

Cheers,

-- Laurent

I've updated the chart with the final numbers as of today. Note that I've also finally decided to book at the Sheraton, to be totally part of the fiesta!

Hi,

I am so happy and thankful to the CCW & Eclipse community that I'm almost speechless.

The goal of the appeal has been reached : within a week(*), ~ $ 1,540 USD have been collected.

This means I'll be able to attend the conj, thanks to you!

tl;dr: Appreciate Counterclockwise ? Help me fund my trip to (clojure/conj 2011), !

The good thing

Hi,

I'm Laurent Petit, main developer and sponsor of the Counterclockwise (CCW) project since the early beginnings in 2008. I devoted much of my spare time (we all have to work :) improving CCW so you can benefit from it.

The bad thing

Last year, I was invited to the first Clojure conference (the Conj) to give a presentation about CCW, most of my expenses were covered by the Conj organization.

This year, I had so many things in my plate that I did not have the time to prepare and send abstracts to the Conj organizers. I spent most of my leisure time working on CCW.

To pursue efficiently my work on CCW, I need to attend the Clojure/Conj, but the total cost of the journey is above what I can reasonably afford right now.

The (ugly ?) thing

This is were I need your help, I need funding to make this journey affordable. Last year I came back full of ideas and energy for CCW hacking. Being remote from the US, this input is much needed and cannot be replaced by emails or chats. I meet new people face to face and these encounters are a much need stimulants for my brains.

Having support from the CCW community would also boost my morale as a tangible recognition of the efforts I've put in the project so far. It's a personal call and also a call to help me keep CCW alive and kicking.

The total cost (transports from Europe, hotel, conj) is estimated at 1,500$ USD.

Reports on progress for the appeal will be done here and on social networks. As soon as the goal is reached, I'll inform people to stop donate. Would I receive more than necessary in the mean time, the remaining funds would be blocked for financing some CCW related needs like a top level domain dedicated to CCW.

It is not my intention to make users pay for CCW, it will remain free but your help at this point would be appreciated.

But I'm just a casual CCW user!

Little brooks make great rivers!

I expect lots to be in the same case as yours. In the end, every donation will count.

You can make the difference, power is in the hands of the crowd, !

I use CCW intensively, and I want more features, what will I have back if I donate?

This is not an appeal for features funding. I'm calling for your recognition for the work you already have in your hands, this CCW product that makes you more productive each hour, each day. And for a very singular reason: allowing me to attend the Clojure/Conj.

If you find CCW already makes you more productive, !

Thank you,

-- Laurent Petit
