Copland's XFCE desktop
Updated Feb 4, 2010 by 3rdal...@gmail.com

Introduction

XFCE is great for so many reasons:

  • t's user-friendly, and easy to pick up
  • ince the 4.4 release, it has enough customability to suit us
  • t uses much less RAM and CPU than Gnome or KDE, which is ideal for obselete Macs.
  • here are enough features for most people, really.

Layout

What layout is Copland's XFCE going to have?

The first experimental version was VERY much like Ubuntu's Gnome or Xubuntu's XFCE - menubar at the top, with launchers and system tray in the top-right. Taskbar and desktop switchers at the bottom.

However, a long-time Mac user told me that it still looked "very Windowsy".

The second experimental version retained the menubar at the top, with clock at the top-right. However, instead of a taskbar, there is now a "window list" menu in the top-right, to the right of the clock. There is also a small (i.e. not full-length) panel in the bottom-left, containing system tray, volume control, note book, virtual desktops etc.

Now the interface resembles Mac OS 9.

Window Management and GTK

The XFWM (XFCE Window Manager) theme is going to be Ghrome-slim - it's the only attractive yet distinctive window theme I could find. The button order is so:

Close Title Minimise Maximise Shade

Double-clicking the title will shade the window. This also resembles Mac OS 9.

GTK theme is likely to be Grey, as it's attractive, distinctive, and business-like. It also fits in excellently with the blue-grey colour scheme of Copland's artwork.
