Roadmap

This document is always subject to change, but basically covers which version of Classilla will come out when. In keeping with the OS 9-specific motif, initial versions will be numbered according to official Apple versions of OS 9 (while they last).

Classilla 9.0

This was the first release of Classilla with the updated "Clecko" layout engine. It is roughly the equivalent of Mozilla 1.6, but this is not exact (it lacks some 1.6 features, but also adds features from as late as 1.8). This version had layout and multiple security improvements, along with changes for rebranding and Mac-specific bug fixes.

This version was intentionally unfinished -- since WaMCom is no longer updated, this is the only version of Mozilla for the classic Mac that is even still theoretically maintained, so its release was accelerated to ensure continuity. For that reason, it was released in 'pre-alpha' form on June 30th, 2009.

Classilla 9.0.4

This was the second release of Classilla. It has additional security and network improvements from Bugzilla, and updates to JavaScript and DOM. Additional layout improvements are also present in this release, along with an experimental fixup rendering mode for sites that cannot be rendered with the standard layout engine, and various other MacOS-specific stability and functionality issues have also been repaired. This improves Classilla's current bug list, although more work remains planned for future versions.

Classilla 9.0.4 was released on October 28th, 2009.

Classilla 9.0.5 through 9.0.9

These are placeholder versions for a planned update of the JavaScript interpreter engine. Further security improvements will also be selected and applied from Bugzilla. As this is a low-level change and may induce new bugs, this is being done on "beta" versions for testing, with 9.0.4 remaining on JavaScript 1.5 as the stable version.

Milestone 9.0.5: Remove Chatzilla; update JavaScript to Mozilla 1.8.1.x (or 1.9.1.x if possible). All security patches for core JS engine should be applied.

Milestone 9.0.6: Complete transformation of NoScript into Script-B-Gone, with new interface (including "one click enable for all scripts on current URL"). Continue security update.

Milestone 9.0.7: Beta prior to 9.1. There should be no outstanding security issues by this milestone.

Milestone 9.0.8: Remaining outstanding layout blockers and regressions, if any. Internationalization packs may also be supported starting with this release.

Milestone 9.0.9: If needed.

Classilla 9.1

First official release version with updated JavaScript internals. This version will achieve the core goal of a fully secure classic Mac OS browser. Other changes may be landed for this version. There is no ETA at this time.

Classilla 9.1.1 through 9.1.9

Under consideration. Fixed SVG support is being reviewed as a possible feature.

Classilla 9.2

Future.

Thank you

Hi. So far this is working great on my old 3400 with 8.6 and 144MB RAM. Nice and fast and smooth. Much faster than iCab.

Couple of comments:

I can't log into AOL Mail. I don't get the log in area on the screen. It's blank.

The Download progress speed is way off. It's showing 5.5k/s when I'm downloading about 200k/s.

Otherwise, every site I have tried was worked well.

Thanx for breathing new life into these older macs.

Comment by classi...@floodgap.com, Jul 01, 2009

Thanks for the feedback, Larry. I have an idea where the AOL glitch is coming from, although the fix is a little complicated. I'm glad it's working well for you on the 3400 -- I tested this on my little 1400 and while it was slow, it was stable.

Comment by larrystotler, Jul 01, 2009

Installing was a little weird. When I double clicked the file it kept opening iCab and redownloading it. I had to use Stuffit and then had to copy the folder out of the archive. I wasn't able to get Flashplayer to install. I did send an email to Dan Knight and Charles Moore over at Lowendmac as well as posted in the google groups for those sites to get some people using it for you.

Comment by classi...@floodgap.com, Jul 01, 2009

The installation problem you had sounds like iCab did not set the type/creator code correctly. I don't support Flashplayer yet.

Also, as a followup, I looked at your AOL mail problem and actually it will let you log in. Make sure that you allow AOL to use JavaScript? and the login box should appear. You will need to add http://my.screenname.aol.com, https://my.screenname.aol.com and http://webmail.aol.com to your exceptions list in NoScript?. It functions at a basic level but appears to work.

Comment by larrystotler, Jul 01, 2009

Yeah, I noticed a lot of complaints from sites about javascript. When I turned off noscript on facebook, when I typed the letters got doubled. When I turned noscript back on it was ok. I like being able to turn on javascript, especially with annoying word ads that pop up, but have always found noscript to be a little overwhelming to get configured properly. also, my main desktop is an E1200(overclocked to 3.2Ghz) running openSUSE 11.0/x64, so java is a little problematic in some cases with it.

There was a report on google groups that someone got flash to work with it on a cube. here's the thread:

http://groups.google.com/group/g-books/browse_thread/thread/41581581bc313fa9

The AOL trick failed. I get a badbrowser.psp? error that throws me to a page that says oops and then to another error page. My problem may be that I go to mail.netscape.com and get redirected to aol mail. I tired adding mail.netscape.com to the exceptions but no luck. I can't even go directly to my.screenname.aol.com. Oh well. not a huge problem.

Thanx for looking into it tho. So far I really like what I see. Need to get my 6400 up and running with my 20" monitor and see how it does. Thanx

Thanks, your first effort has yielded the best overall browser availible for the Classic Mac OS! Keep up the good work.

Hurray!!! Mac OS 9 forever!!!

Comment by neal_and...@mac.com, Jul 11, 2009

Thanks. I'm not a code writer, but I'll do whatever I can to add to this project. This browser is exactly what my iMac DV 400 needed. I use it as a keeper of all my pre-Mac OS X applications/documents. It intentionally doesn't have OS X loaded on it.

I miss OS 9 and was incredibly fluent working in it. The machines that ran it were some of my favorites.

I look forward to any/all updates to Classilla.

Well, Flash 7 works with Classilla. Here's an installer (hard to find):

http://emaculation.com/classilla/flashplayer7_macppc.hqx

Installation is fairly straightforward.

However, Flash 7 isn't really adequate in the modern world. YouTube? sort of works. A lot of high quality animations are missing parts. :(

Comment by dangauvreau, Jul 24, 2009

Thanks for creating a new browser that supports OS 9. We run OS 9 on G4s at work and I hear complaints about not being able to visit certain websites on an almost daily basis. Your browser has really helped alleviate the situation. Running the browser with Javascript enabled globally provides the simplest and best experience with the users here. I look forward to future updates! (Is there a newsletter I can subscribe to so i know when an update has been released?)

Comment by classi...@floodgap.com, Jul 24, 2009

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. dangauvreau, http://code.google.com/p/classilla/updates/list has an RSS feed which you can follow, and any changes made to the project will be reflected there. I am considering a mailing list, but right now the traffic is still minimal, so I simply post Classilla updates and progress to the LEM Mac OS 9 list at http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/macos9.html .

Very very very good :-))))) My english is very bad but thanks to think classic users ! I'm running on g3 beige with mac os 9.2.2 an it's faster and better Icab :-) I love Classila and long life for it !

Hi, I was thinking about trying to build swfdec aka a flash imitator and newer than flash 7 (although not completely up to date but perhaps some). there is a mozilla plug in in the sources.

A couple issues: 1) it requires zlib and libpng. I see classilla has newer versions of those, can they be provided separately or are they in the big source code bundle at all ? 2) I only have MPW and apple compilers, not codewarrior. I have built some modules in perl with them (with C or C++ components interfaced to perl I mean). I am pretty sure it would not build Classilla but it might build the plug-in, anyway I might try it. 3) I sort of feel like trying the build on Jaguar first (I know, its traitorous, but I know Unix much better than MacOS).

Comments/ Suggestions ?

Comment by classi...@floodgap.com, Sep 27, 2009

zlib and libpng are both in the big source archive, but the libpng is minimally modified and you could just use the standard release. However, you should probably use Classilla's zlib as I had to do a lot of tweaking to get Metrowerks to digest it. I don't see any reason why MrC or MPW C wouldn't compile it though.

You could indeed do the build under Jag, but I don't think Jag's Xcode will make a classic-linkable plugin. Carbon may work but I can't guarantee that. However, you will make a lot of people happy if you make an OS 9 "Gnash" or swfdec -- it's a popular request and just not one I'm ready to tackle a/t/m.

I love this so much!

After years of chasing the bleeding edge, I got sick of it. I dug my old G4, 6500, and Powerbook 3400 out and hooked them up. 9.2.2 on the G4 and my trusty iMac G3 500, 8.6 on the OldWorld? Macs.

Classilla is absolutely wonderful and has finally made my attempt to "go retro" a reality! Thank you guys! I'll report the bugs as they come!

Comment by mgoodine, Oct 05, 2009

cymraegish:

That would be really cool. Do keep us posted on your work.

Comment by classi...@floodgap.com, Oct 05, 2009

theinnerjamie, you're quite welcome. And yes, cymraegish, do let us know what you come up with. I'd be happy to promote an alternative to Adobe's rather aged Flash Player.

Comment by vinto...@yahoo.fr, Nov 08, 2009

I could not believe it when I found this marvelous browser especially designed for Mac OS 9. EXACTLY what I needed. And the roadmap looks so dynamics: so many bugs, but so much energy to solve them! Ok, Classilla is a bit slow on my Powerbook 1400 with 48 Mg of ram, but anyway, I am used to it!

Keep up the good work!
