Issue 7976: Unneeded horizontal scrollbar in Gmail
22 people starred this issue and may be notified of changes. Back to list

Reported by idanan@chromium.org, Feb 23, 2009
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Goto Google Mail (mail.google.com/a/google.com)
2. Enable Right-Side-Chat Labs
3. Go back to Google Main

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

It should be possible to resize the window such that the
horizontal scrollbar goes away.

Please use labels and text to provide additional information.

There is always a horizontal scroll bar. Even when resizing the
window much wider, the scrollbar is always 'almost full'.

This problem does not occur in Seamonkey 1.1.14. This problem
does occur in older versions (release) of Chrome.

This may be a bug in Gmail.

Note this has nothing to do with gmail chat being on the right. I see it even without
that being the case.
Comment 6 by idanan@chromium.org, Jun 09, 2009
In may case moving chat to the left removes the horizontal scrollbar, so there is a
relation. It may have to do with other screen-related parameters.

Comment 7 by morda4u, Jul 07, 2009
I think moving the chat from right to left fixed it in the past, but today I was upgraded
to Chrome 3.0.191.3 on Mac and the scrollbar is still there no matter if the chat is left
or right.
In Safari 4.0.1 (5530.18) the scrollbar is there with right-side chat, but disappears when
moved to the left.
Comment 8 by idanan@chromium.org, Jul 07, 2009
As I went to Chrome 3.0.191.0 on XP, the problem went away for me. There is no longer a
horizontal scrollbar in Gmail on my system.

We just got a comment saying that the problem exists on the Mac build, so I'm not sure
what the dependencies are here. Does anyone still have this on Windows?
Comment 10 by morda4u, Jul 07, 2009
Actually, resizing the window manually (dragging bottom-right corner) makes it go
away, but it comes back after refreshing the page.

Comment 11 by randallagordon, Jul 12, 2009
I'm using 3.0.193.0 on WinXP x64 SP2, using right-side chat still results in a
horizontal scroll bar. Manual resize as per morda4u's suggestion doesn't make it
disappear. Does not occur in FF 3.0, FF 3.5 or Opera 10, but does in Safari 4.0.2
(530.19.1), so apparently it is a WebKit issue?
Comment 13 by edensoto, Jul 23, 2009
This is really annoying. Same as others, happens in Chrome and Safari 4, but not in
Firefox 3.5. Just bump the right side chat status menu over so its right justified with
the drop down button and that will solve the issue.
Comment 14 by morda4u, Jul 28, 2009
It works ok in 3.0.195.1 on Mac with left-side chat - no scrollbar. Not sure if it was
version-bump related or a change in Gmail. I had 3.0.195.1 for a couple of days but
noticed it only today. Still broken with right-side chat.
Comment 15 by michael.alec.treanor, Jul 28, 2009
I've always had chat on the left hand side, and this bug has been annoying myself too. I update the build daily.
I'm using a 13' macbook.
Comment 16 by michael.alec.treanor, Aug 12, 2009
The issue has been resolved, I can't reproduce on my macbook 13'. Thanks so much,
gmail loads a lot better.
Comment 17 by idanan@chromium.org, Aug 12, 2009
Yesterday's build still has it for my configuration unfortunately.
Comment 20 by michael.alec.treanor, Aug 12, 2009
attached is screenshot of this bug not reproducing on a macbook 13'.
the build of chromium is only a minute old.

I was too quick reporting it's gone. Currently I'm on 3.0.198.1 (Mac) and it's still there
(with Chat on the left). As always, resizing the window, manually or by clicking green +
button helps.

This seems to happen regardless of where chat is.
Summary: Permanent horizontal scrollbar in Gmail
Comment 30 by mark@chromium.org, Aug 23, 2009
The Right-side Chat problem is a separate issue that may actually be a bug in that
Gmail Labs feature. I've filed bug 20073 to track that. I'm sorry to repurpose this bug
from what it was initially filed to address, but there seems to have been some confusion
between the two causes of horizontal scrollbars appearing, and this bug seems to have
become more about the horizontal scrollbars not related to Right-side Chat.

build 24734)

Comment 34 by mark@chromium.org, Sep 01, 2009
It had to get backed out upstream because it caused a layout test regression on the Mac
(in DumpRenderTree only, not in Safari).

I'm still looking at that, but in the mean time, it looks like there was a Gmail-side fix for
this.
Comment 35 by dfoosh1, Sep 01, 2009
"Is this fixed?"

No, unfortunately I am still seeing the problem using Chromium build 25088 (Mac).
Comment 36 by mmentovai, Sep 01, 2009
I guess you're right. I don't see it any more on the Gmail account I usually use in
Chrome, but I do see it in others.

I had deprioritized this given comment 34 but I'll see if I can figure out what's wrong
with DumpRenderTree to get the fix back in upstream.

Thanks for fixing the issue...

Is this issue fixed for Windows?
Comment 42 by mark@chromium.org, Sep 04, 2009
The specific bug that caused horizontal scrollbars to appear in "ordinary" Gmail (no Labs
features or anything extra) is fixed on all platforms. That doesn't mean there aren't
other things that will cause an errant horizontal scrollbar to show up. For example,
enabling Right-side Chat in Gmail, a Labs feature, will add such a scrollbar in all
WebKit-based browsers.
Comment 43 by morda4u, Sep 11, 2009
Thanks for fixing it!
Comment 44 by asadovsky, Sep 11, 2009
Will the right-side chat horizontal scrollbar WebKit issue still be fixed?
Comment 46 by idanan@chromium.org, Sep 11, 2009
@44: It is still broken, at least as of yesterday. Actually Mark said so in #42.

@Mark: You closed this bug, so do we open a separate bug? The description is going to
be strangely familiar though...

Comment 47 by mark@chromium.org, Sep 11, 2009
Comment 44, please go to bug 20073.

Openstreetmap site has the Unneeded horizontal scrollbar.
Look: http://www.openstreetmap.org/index.html
I'm using Chrome 4.0.207.0. 64-bit on Debian Squeeze.

Comment 49 by mark@chromium.org, Sep 11, 2009
Comment 48, I don't see that on the Mac.

Not ever instance of an unwanted scrollbar is caused by the same bug. This bug is
specific to one instance of an unwanted horizontal scrollbar in Gmail, and as comments
44-47 indicate, it's not even the only such instance that occurs in Gmail. If you think
you have another bug, please file it separately. Feel free to refer back to this bug.

I'm using Chrome Beta 4.0.249.43 and right-side chat and i have the same problem. No
matter how much i resize my window, the horizontal bar is always there, even on
fullscreen
Comment 51 by mark@chromium.org, Dec 24, 2009
The extra scrollbars with right-side chat are bug 20073.
