For me the one and decisive issue for Google Chrome is that it doesn't run
on Windows 2000. Would it be too hard to change that?
http://compn.wordpress.com/2008/09/02/google-chrome-does-not-work-on-windows-2000/
suggests not, but I assume that's just an outsider's speculation. So, what
are the chances?

not expected to be supported
maybe an 'unoffical' release

but i still use win2000 on an old laptop so would also like to see this
hoping enough other people register their interest

yes i'd love to get chrome working on my win2k box.
firefox/safari both run well on it.
Comment 4 by Walt.Robinson, Sep 03, 2008

Another vote for Win2k support if it's possible. We still have Win2k as the desktop
OS on all machines here at work.

I'm running OS-X at home (I've got WinXP, and Linux, as a VM in Paralles, and
downloaded Chrome on there, but I won't be doing most of my surfing with Parallels,
so until the Mac OSX, and hopefully a Win2k version are released, I won't be able to
really give it a shot a becoming my primary browser).

I'm very excited about the new features, keep up the good work.
Comment 5 by brad.johanson, Sep 03, 2008
I'd also like Windows 2k support. Two of the four machines I use regularly still run
on Windows 2k. It is a great and solid OS and I haven't seen any need to upgrade.
Pretty much all other apps I need run fine on it (Firefox, Office, Netbeans, Visual
Studio, etc.).
Comment 6 by martinr...@yahoo.com, Sep 03, 2008
I my company there are 15 W2K PCs. We need Chrome runnng on it!!!
Comment 7 by asherlevy, Sep 05, 2008
Aye, add my vote for win2k support (SP4).
I use it not only on an old <1000Mhz system with little memory, but also on a new
system installed this week. It's lean and mean, without the XP/Vista bloat, and still
runs current software, including CAD!
Comment 8 by brosaz, Sep 06, 2008
Same here, I've got old computer, that need a ligthweigth web-browser, and full web
capability. thanks for the effort

possible workaround: install win2k sp4 update 1

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B54730CF-8850-4531-B52B-
BF28B324C662&displaylang=en

can anyone verify it works ?
Comment 10 by raffaele.castagno, Sep 10, 2008
I've tried it yesterday. It allows Chrome to be installed, but it still crashes when
you run it, and I can't tell why.

Dr.Watson says it's unable to connect the application, because the process is already
terminated, and I really don't know how to figure out what's happening.

Can anyone provide a working solution, or some tips on how to track the problem?
Comment 11 by roytam, Sep 10, 2008
I guess it will only happens in debug builds. I'm checking out the sources and I'll
build a release build after checkout is finished.

in reply to comment 9, it donesn't work for chromium builds.

want-want-want win2000 support.
Comment 13 by sfrahm1, Sep 15, 2008
There is and evidently will be no "support" per-se. Things went
so far as to have a discussion about it closed on me with no
polite notice. There is however, a workaround. Proceed at your
own risk, as I said there is no official "support."

I followed the instructions on this NSFW Chinese page translated
from Japanese (just keep your right browser margin closed down
tightly) and am currently running Chrome now to write this here
message on my own Win2K box.
http://pcsofts.cn/special/google-chrome-on-windows-20002k.html

I ran the chrome2k.reg file, the Chrome Installer, then unchrome.reg,
I get the one warning squawk on entry, no other problems at all yet.
(yes, I backed up my registry before I did this silly thing and am
running NOD32 AV etc.)

I suppose this is one of those kind of deals like if you dare to say
that vitamin C, zinc and echinacea will "cure" most colds, go to jail,
don't pass go, don't collect Windows $2000. You know sorta like a
monopoly. If Google says that they "support" it, they will probably
get sued by an 800 pound gorrilla with lotsa pretty smart lawyers
on the payroll.

"News from NSpeaks
Yes, I have finally managed to decode the japanese language finally. And not only
managed to decode it, but I will provide you with an easier way and less files to
work with. And will also tell you on how to sort a common error with that type of
Installation on Windows 2000.

For those who are wondering, where this japanese language concept came in
here’s the link.
Actually Google Chrome was made only for Windows XP and
Vista. Installer won’t even run on Windows 2000. But a japanese guy founded (sic)
a method to make it work on Windows 2000 too. But since the page was in
japanese and even google translator provided not much help, not much people
could make it work on Windows 2000. I tried not only learning his method but
also came up with a simpler method too.

So here is my method to make Chrome work on Windows 2000.

*Download Chrome Offline Installer directly from here.

(No more user string changes or use of registry hack to make IE in
2000 work as IEXP.exe)

*Make sure you have the following patch in 2000 Installed: Update
Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 (KB891861)
BF28B324C662&displaylang=en
or http://tinyurl.com/2au5tz)}]

If not download and install now because if you
don’t have this patch you will see the following error: the procedure entry point
heapsetinformation could not be located in the dynamic link library kernel32.dll

*Download the chrome2k.zip file from here. "

[{(Please See Attached, it looks safe to me. I used it, but I can make no
promises about it not turning you computer into a steaming hunk of slag.
I am NOT a programmer, use at your own risk, yadda yadda, don't sue me,
lotsa luck if you try. Ed.)}]

"I changed the chrome2k.zip file since I don’t need to use bat file and removed
entry of IEXP.exe from reg file too.

*Run the chrome2k.reg file and accept the changes in registry. Run the
installer now. And voila, Chrome now runs in Windows 2000. (If it does not,
read at the end of post for possible fix.)

*To uninstall Chrome run the offical uninstaller from Add Remove Programs
and then run unchrome.reg file.

Please report if the above method does not work. Or a fix still needed for
above method. Hope my method works for everybody.
Update to the method: As reported in comments, people were facing
problems. I have updated the zip file 2 days back. Pls redownload and
then run. Also some have reported that even with updated reg file, it didn’t
work. So try this. After running chrome2k.reg, run the installer and then
run unchrome.reg file and now run Chrome Browser. It is working even
though it shows some silly warnings. But it runs this way.
Share and Enjoy:"

I've tried it and it works. The "updated" method proved successful in the end: run
chrome2k.reg, then the installer (which will eventually crash), then unchrome.reg, and
then the browser.

Every time you start it, there is a message: "Google Chrome does not support Windows
2000. Some features may not work." However, as far as I can tell, web browsing is fully
functional, and the only thing that does not work correctly is Options menu: buttons
don't look right and combo boxes are partially rendered and virtually unusable. This
should be easily fixable, though.

Please make it work...
Nova.
Comment 18 by raffaele.castagno, Oct 08, 2008
I've got it working too.
I've tried also with chromium snapshots, with no luck. Don't know if the procedure
have to be adapted for newer releases, or if new incompatibilities have been
introduced.
Anyway, I'm enjoying Chrome a lot. There are some glitches, but the overall
experience is great! Can't wait to use it on linux!

Chrome 0.2.149.30 is awesome on Windows 2000, but the new 0.3 release just crashes.
Can we get a fix? We want Win2K support!
Comment 20 by jon@chromium.org, Nov 11, 2008
Taking these to triage.

Sorry, Windows 2000 is not a supported OS. In addition to supporting Windows XP and
Vista we are working hard on supporting Linux and Mac OS X.

Be careful using older versions that may not include support for automated updates.
You are likely to miss security patches and that would be a shame. Be careful.

heh, telling people that use an 8 year old operating system to be careful about
chromium not updating..... irony.

guess we'll have to wait for a fork that supports win2k. or building the linux port
in mingw/msys might work.

thanks for the official answer.
Comment 23 by Sebastian.Lisken, Nov 12, 2008
Hang on - as we Win2K users know, the OS is still receiving security updates, and
according to Wikipedia, this is set to continue until July 2010. I'll probably stay
on until then and then move to Linux. And I was almost going to respond to the
"official" answer to point that out, until I decided that updates to Chrome were
probably what Jon's message was referring to. :-)

You can download it at "http://stadt-bremerhaven.de/2008/09/03/portable-chrome-
021510/" This site is mostly in dutch, there translator links to several languages on
the right side.. Upon every startup, a dialogue box says " Google Chrome does not
support Windows 2000. Some features may not work." Other than thjat, it seems to work
fine.
