Chrome Version : 6.0.427.0 dev
URLs (if applicable) : https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
     Safari 4: N/A
  Firefox 3.x: N/A
         IE 7: N/A
         IE 8: N/A

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Execute Chrome 6.0.427.0 dev on Mac OS
2. Open Gmail
3. Mac OS starts swap and Chrome becomes slow to response user input

What is the expected result?
Chrome should run smoothly without problems since free memory still have about 512 MB

What happens instead?
Mac OS starts swap and Chrome becomes slow to response user input.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.
I have a MacBook only has 2 GB ram, when I run Chrome on Mac OS, the free memories are about 512 MB. Then I open Gmail, the OS starts to swap, and Chrome become very slow.

By examining the memory usage of Chrome in task manager, I find each Chrome extension will take triple or quadruple memories than it on Windows.

Please check the attached screen shot for detail information.

I think someone mentioned that about:memory for mac does not show "shared" memory as it does for Windows. It is possible Mac apps are unable to query that statistic or (less likely) the OS does not support it. Someone on the Chrome team would know for sure.

The former would cause the increased figures you see to be an illusion, while the latter would make it a real problem. It's possible you could figure it out by keeping an eye on free real and virtual memory while starting/stopping extensions and seeing if the change matches the total memory the extension uses or if it's less less.

I use Activity Monitor to examine the Chrome memory usage on Mac OS X 10.6.3, and then use Process Explorer to do it again on Windows. The result is the same.

And I really got OS swap when I use Chrome for Mac to open Gmail only with 512 MB free system RAM.

Could you post screenshots of about:memory in both those cases? That would be extremely helpful.

Thanks :)
