Reported by rohandhr...@gmail.com, Jun 4, 2010
Chrome Version (from the about:version page): 5.0.375.55 (Official Build
47796)
Is this the most recent version: Yes, in the stable channel
OS + version: Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 8.04
CPU architecture (32-bit / 64-bit): 64-bit and 32-bit respectively
Window manager: KDE
URLs (if relevant): http://www.bbc.co.uk/hindi/ (for example)
Behavior in Linux Firefox: Works perfectly
Behavior in Windows Chrome (if you have access to it): Works perfectly

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Visit any web page which uses Indic fonts
2. Open the same page in Firefox

What is the expected result?
The Indic fonts should render correctly.

What happens instead?
They are rendered horribly bad.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot
and backtrace if possible.
I have tried this on both Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 8.04. The issue persists on
both distros. I have not installed any special fonts. On both distros, full
autohinting and sub-pixel rendering is enabled. I am attaching a screenshot
for reference.

This is the output taken on Ubuntu 8.04 with KDE as my window manger. Note that I am using Chromium nightly build 6.0.458.0 (51647), however the result is same on the Linux stable/beta channel too. The Firefox version is 3.6.6. On Chrome/Chromium, even the bold Hindi fonts are not appearing. Bold Hindi fonts work fine on Fedora as seen in my previous screenshot, but not on Ubuntu. Also, the problem of improper rendering still exists.

I looked around in the source code of the BBC webpage, and it tests for the "mangal" font. I installed the mangal.ttf from somewhere on the internet, and now the bold fonts are appearing fine, but otherwise the rendering is still messed up in Chrome/Chromium and proper in Firefox. The problem also seems much more intensified when Chrome(ium) is using Mangal.

On a side note, I would really prefer not having to use Mangal, since it's an hideously ugly font. Is there any specific reason why Firefox is able to show bold fonts properly, but Chrome(ium) isn't?

I am still seeing the issue. The problem seems to be limited to few characters called 'matra's. They seem to be shifted to the left when rendered. Example text from Wikipedia Hindi: देवनागरी में लिखने के
Also it looks like Bold text is not seeing issues.

This seems to be fixed in chrome dev (ver 12.0.742.5) (not sure about beta), you may try that

It does fix the specified issue in the dev version. However, it introduces a new one. Headlines are not readable anymore. They show as boxes now, so I don't know what link I am clicking on as I can't read it. See attached screenshots for details.

It works now after I manually installed Mangal.ttf font.

Due to the age of the issue, changing the priority to P3, however because it has at least 10 stars, marking it for review.

I suspect that this is fixed. OR, it's caused by bad fonts being installed (FreeSans.ttf?).

Tamil Text is not displayed properly in Google Chrome Version 36.0.1985.143. I am using it in Fedora 20 with Gnome Version 3.10.2.

This issue is happening with previous versions of chrome as well. In same computer, I have Mozilla Firefox installed by default and there is no issues in Firefox.

In chrome, the encoding is set to autodetect and it choses UTF-8. It happens on all webpages. To make to sure that the problem is not because of extensions, I tried in Incognito mode, but the problem still persists.

When I searched through google forum, many questions on same topic were posted, but they are closed without any resolution.

This issue happens only on Tamil as far as I have noticed. Languages like Malayalam and Telugu are displayed correctly.

I have attached the screenshot from Chrome and Firefox displaying the same page : ta.wikinews.org .

I couldn't upload the the screenshots, so the links are : chrome: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jayabharat/14993763792/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/jayabharat/14807525718/ firefox https://www.flickr.com/photos/jayabharat/14807437849/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/jayabharat/14971141436/

FYI, the same page displays properly with Chrome on Windows 8.1.
