v4 became my default browser on the strength of its quick (2-3 seconds)
initial load. v5 is not much better than Opera, even IE8 or Firefox.

Could be an extension thing. On my end, I just figured out that Sexy Undo Close Tab
was adding a couple seconds of HD activity before my homepage would load up. RSS Live
Links also adds a slight delay, but it's short enough to be worth my while.

Alternatively, maybe a large history/cache? I don't know if that affects startup time
( Issue 37027 mentions it), but if disabling extensions doesn't help, you could try
clearing those.

I'm getting the same, it was working fine before.

Here's a strace where you can see that clearly there's something stuck in a loop trying to read something that continuously fails.

I've noticed that the "new tab" is *very* slow, but when I set the home page to google.com the init time is very fast.

Also, in order to test this (without rebooting) I do this:
echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

try disabling extensions and try again. if this is still happening, re-open the bug.

Version 6 is now OK. AdBlock is only extension now. IDM update fixed multiple Tabs crash.
(Pity for Chrome's sake that IE9 is such an improvement - now a serious contender!)

I have been running without extensions. I still experience slow load when on the "new tab" page.
