Chrome Version : all URLs (if applicable) : see below What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. visit: http://lerdorf.com/404_short.php, which is non-standard 404, but short, so it brings up the nav suggestions. vs http://lerdorf.com/404_long.php which is longer and does. It seems if someone goes to the trouble to show the non-default 404, we should respect and render it, even if it is short.

This is a real PITA, I just wasted 5 minutes trying to figure out what was going on here locally. You know it is a real annoying bug when the PHP guy is calling it out. I was returning a custom 404 with one line "Maybe you're looking for <link>" as part of a development catchall with Catalyst MVC. I found this and I started investigating my http-server.

It should be noted for a short term workaround you can turn off the pretty chrome default 404 through "Config -> Options -> Under the Hood -> Show suggestions for Navigation Errors"

How do we determine if it's a default 404 or a custom 404? The 512 byte check is just a heuristic that tries to do that. Also, we're just matching IE here, so even if we were able to tell what's a default 404 or a custom 404, your custom error page wouldn't show up for a majority of users.

What IE does has no effect on what should be done. Any content, default or not, is created for the intention of being used. Ignoring that you don't know IF my content is default: who are you to say your default content is better than mine? Ultimately, it comes down to introducing confusion -- chrome doesn't even indicate that it is hiding content...

This is my #1 complaint with Chrome web development. It doesn't help that the "This link appears to be broken" page looks EXACTLY THE SAME no matter what the error is -- DNS? 404? Doesn't matter. It's especially frustrating when I'm continually trying to train users to tell me what the actual error message was, not just "It's broken." So not only is this frustrating local development, it's making it impossible to get feedback from users. How about, "Chrome shouldn't show a 404 navigation suggestion"? Or at the very least, put it in a bar at the top of the page, like your "Would you like to translate this page?" suggestion.
