I reproduce this on my crappy windows laptop. The test conversation had 25 messages,
and I had to click "expand all" to see this bug. I had to scroll all the way up and
down a few times to see it, happens about every other time, and the pauses are about a
half second long.

Possible dupe of issue 104 , although the symptom there was consistently slow scrolling
rather than periodic pauses. Because of that difference I'm not duping these.

I won't have time to get around to this, and the jank task force is all booked up for
the next while so I can't find someone to assign this to. Taking myself off as owner
so that if anyone has free time, they can take this on.

I'm noticing an XHR handler periodically taking a long period of time (~2seconds on my
somewhat crappy windows laptop), which definitely causes a notable hiccup in scrolling.
Looking at the JS code that is running this could be an issue with the gmail JS code or
some of our DOM bindings.

I've identified what I believe to be the root cause, turns out it doesn't have anything to do with
scrolling. A bit of javascript that runs periodically on gmail is triggering this:

https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30988

and freezing up the UI thread for 500-2500ms (depending on how many nodes are live in the DOM,
etc). Since the UI thread is locked it is unable to respond to repaint the screen and so scrolling appears
to freeze up. I've marked the bug 'UPSTREAM' because of the WebKit bug, I will also follow up with the
appropriate folks at GMail.

It is possible that there are other periodic tasks that cause the UI to lock up in gmail, but after some
observation it seems like this one is very common relative to anything else that might be going on.

The WebKit bug will definitely not be resolved in the Mstone-4 timescale, but since
there's a valid workaround for web applications I do not think it's a huge deal.
Marking as Mstone-X.

What problem (be _very_ specific) still exists on your box?

almost same as the original report:
1. open a long conversation in gmail
2. grab the scrollbar and start pulling it down
3. notice that scrolling very lag, especially when a sender name float at right bottom.
btw, scrolling on google reader is very lag too, but all these are very smooth on my windows system, same box.

I've slow gmail all the time when on mail list in my Inbox. On Ubuntu and FreeBSD in version 6.x.
Can't see this problem on Mac.
7.0.517.44 (Official Build 64615)
Maybe it's fixed in 7.x?
