Issue 19587: Chromium Fails to call adobe to open PDFs files
118 people starred this issue and may be notified of changes. Back to list

Reported by iepuroix, Aug 18, 2009
Chrome Version : 4.0.202.0 (23615)
OS + version : Arch Linux , 2.6.30
CPU architecture (32-bit / 64-bit): 32-bit
window manager : XFCE-4.6
URLs (if applicable) : any that contains filetype:pdf ( example
http://www.ada.gov/restribr.pdf )
Behavior in Firefox 3.x (if applicable): Firefox calls Adobe PDF reader
correctly
Behavior in Chrome for Windows (optional): Chrome for Windows calls Adobe
PDF reader correctly

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Click URLs that contain pdf files

What is the expected result?
- Chromium should call Adobe PDF Reader and open the PDF file either
externally or embedded in the browser.

What happens instead?
only black screen appears.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot
and backtrace if possible.

Note that chromium is started with --enable-plugins. about:plugins detects
adobe as plugin (see attached)
The following error message is returned on console whenever a pdf link is
clicked:

[4751:4751:74970511894:ERROR:/b/slave/chromium-rel-
linux/build/src/webkit/glue/plugins/webplugin_delegate_impl_gtk.cc(266)] Not

Note that in 4.0.203.0 (24088) it seems to have been fixed. However i'd like the option
of having choice whether the pdf should open embedded in browser or externally.

I'm seeing this in 24095 (with http://www.berr.gov.uk/files/file52658.pdf ) so if it
was fixed it's broken again now.

Eliminating the "plugins" label, preferring instead Area:Plugins.

I am also seeing this in 4.0.204.0 (Ubuntu build 24734) (native 64-bit) trying to use
the mozplugger plugin in Ubuntu 9.04. I was hoping this would work since totem
plugins are crashing right now.

Same in 4.0.205.0 (Ubuntu build 25032).

One thing that I noticed that the 'Adobe Reader 9.1' section appears twice in
'about:plugins'. Could it be a sign of trouble?

See attached.

If you have time, can you try:
- getting a build (see build.chromium.org, click continuous) later than r24961
- quit all instances of chrome and run it with --debug-plugin-loading
- paste all the output of that to this bug

the latest builds. Currently failing under build 25032.

if i remember correctly, in the browser
Comment 16 by jgstroud, Sep 08, 2009
I am having the same problem. I am running chromium 64bit, and acrobat is a 32bit
plugin running with ndiswrapper. I get the following errors with the plugin trying
to load the wrong libraries:

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "gail": /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libgail.so: wrong
ELF class: ELFCLASS64
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "atk-bridge": /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libatk-
bridge.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

I suspect the last time this worked may have been right before the 64bit builds. As
a side note, if it helps any, the plugin does work properly in Firefox.
Comment 17 by jgstroud, Sep 08, 2009
Correction: the plugin is running with "nspluginwrapper".
Comment 18 by evan@chromium.org, Sep 09, 2009
Wow, I can't even get my Firefox to load PDFs (also using nspluginwrapper).

Evan, there is a pdf extension for firefox that allows you to do all manner of things
once you have clicked on a pdf https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636

Also, might it be easier to call evince, the built in pdf viewer than try to do this
with the Adobe plugin?

PDF's wont open here either (4.0.223.11 (Official Build 29903)).

I used to work on older builds of Chrome. The tab that should display the PDF never
shows the pdf. There's no error shown. I've tried generating output with --debug-
plugin-loading, but I have no clue what that is supposed to do to help me understand
what is going wrong.
Comment 30 by rjd444, Oct 25, 2009
I was using Adobe Acrobat 5.0 as my PDF reader without issues. After upgrading my
reader to the Adobe Reader 9.2, I started having issues. Within the first couple
days of the Reader install I got a message something like "Adobe is not working
correctly with your browser, would you like to fix this issue?". I answered yes and
after a couple cycles of this, the message stopped appearing.

When I click on a hyperlink to a PDF, most open fine, but a few don't. When they
don't, the Chrome window either turns white and locks up (I have to close it) or
turns grey. In the latter case, the window is still usuable - for example I can
enter a new URL and go there. In the former case, I can't even get a cursor to
appear in the location box.

(1) I uninstalled Adobe Reader and updated my windows file associations to go back
to Acrobat. This does correct the problem.

(2) With reader still uninstalled, I uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome. This
has not fixed it either.

(3) If I right-click the hypertext link and download it, then open from the
download list at the bottom, Chrome correctly launches Acrobat in a separate
window and opens the file. The only problem is when I click on a hypertext link
in a window and I'm expecting the PDF to launch in the browser window.

-Bob

Comment 31 by rjd444, Oct 25, 2009
After reinstalled reader 9.2, I no longer see the hang-up issue. The window
contents either don't change or go to gray. In either case, the location box
changes to the URL I clicked on. Here is a PDF URL that is giving me trouble:

http://www.irlp.net/new-install/Ver3_Wiring.pdf

Chrome version 3.0.195.27
Adobe version 9.2.0

Comment 32 by manishjhanji, Oct 25, 2009
@rjd444 - The issue with Acrobat reader 9.2.0 is being tracked in bug#24883
Comment 33 by rjd444, Oct 25, 2009
OK. I have confirmed this is the same as bug 24883 . A issue search of "adobe reader"
does not return 24883 in its results.
Comment 34 by jonasdiemer, Oct 26, 2009
I am also unable to view any PDF with 4.0.225.0 (Ubuntu build 30028) and acroread
9.1.3. "Adobe Reader 9.1" appears twice in about:plugins here also (maybe due to
multiple symlinks to nppdf.so?).

Anything I can provide to debug this? Its really annoying that PDFs don't work when
clicked (I have to download them first). An external viewer would be enough for me,
embedding in browser is not required. Is there a way to enable an external pdf
viewer?

Interestingly, adobe flash works just fine...
Comment 35 by jpgar...@gmail.com, Nov 01, 2009
Although things have probably changed (I'm running final release 3.0.195.27) I've
seen this issue scattered all over the Chrome Support Boards and here in the Code
Discussions as well.

An immediate fix for external (that is non-embedded) viewing has been found for those
with Adobe Reader. One simply goes into Reader Edit->Preferences->Internet and un-
checks the "Display PDF in Web Browser." However, this fix does not seem to work to
for everyone, and obviously doesn't fix the underlying issue, which seems to either
be in the PDF Plug-In for Chrome (nppdf32.dll) or in Chrome itself.

Some people also have reported success just uninstalling and reinstalling whatever
version of Acrobat or Reader they were using, but this does not seem to fix the issue
for all users.

Finally, the last solution I've seen is copying the nppdf32.dll file out of the
Acrobat Install Director (it's located in the "Browser" folder) and into the Google
Chrome Plug In folder, which should be in your user's local app data folder.

Some people reporter greater success with the last technique *after* uninstalling the
PDF Plug In in Chrome itself, which they confirmed by checking about:plugins .

One thing that seems to stand out is that most users report no difficulty opening PDF
files in IE or Firefox, so the issue seems to be confined to Chrome.

Comment 51 by setack, Dec 15, 2009
Is there a plan to solve this in the near future? Although the "Docs PDF/PowerPoint
Viewer" chromium extension is a partial solution (really cool BTW), there are lots of
PDFs behind authentication mechanisms (scientific papers) which do not show in Google
Docs Viewer (and therefore, needs a working pdf plugin).

I do not see this as a top priority for developers so I am wondering if a have to
switch back to Firefox definitively or wait for a solution in the near future (if any).
Comment 52 by kevinleighton61, Dec 15, 2009
@setack - not sure if this helps but on Linux I use a non-Adobe PDF reader (Evince)
which works OK if Adobe Reader is uninstalled. Using this arrangement the PDF is
downloaded and Evince opens the PDF as an external application.
Comment 53 by setack, Dec 15, 2009
@kevin - Thanks for the advise, this is what I'm currently doing but I would like to
have pdfs embedded within the browser.

Following comment #8 by evan, I attach the ouput of Chromium 4.0.271.0 (r34540) from
build.chromium.org (continuous). I started chromium with the following command:

Hi all,

I also have the same problem with Chrome 4.0.266.0 running on Ubuntu 9.10 and with
Adobe Reader 9.2 installed.

When I try to open a PDF file only a grayed out screen appears... it is frustrating!
I often need to read scientific articles in PDF format and saving them everytime I
need to read one will cost me a lot of space (and patience!).

I think Google Chrome has a great potential to be the best browser ever but as of
right now there's a long road to get there yet.

There was the same problem without above patch as with adobe reader plugin.

@ tomasz, very nice!!! I tried it and it worked like a charm :-) I created a debian
source package for the CVS release of mozplugger with the patch you mention so people
do not have to compile it by themselves.

The deb package is accessible through the following PPA (only for karmic sorry):

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/setack/stuff/ubuntu karmic main

tomasz, thanks for pointing this workaround!

Comment 63 by peng.thinkblue, Jan 06, 2010
I've got the mozplugger from setack's PPA but I'm still ending up with a blank window
when I try to open a PDF. I've got Adobe Reader 9.2 10/06/2009 (I think from a
downloaded installer) and I'm attaching the output of about:plugins on Chromium
version 4.0.291.0 (Developer Build 35606) Ubuntu (with today's daily update).

For completeness of information I'm showing several versions of nppdf.so, and I have
no idea why I have so many instances of it.

I think the Adobe ship a 32bit plug-in so, I'm not 100% sure on this, it won't work on
a 64bit browser. Unless someone can confirm that it works without nspluginwrapper.
Comment 65 by garretwcox, Jan 06, 2010
mozplugger works.
It didn't at first though. The problem was that it was still using the adobe plugin.
When I looked at about:plugins I saw that the adobe plugin was actually listed
twice...once above mozplugger and once below.

Anyway, I determined that the first entry was referencing the file
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so
deleting this file made mozplugger the default pdf handler, and things worked great
from there.

btw, the second entry referenced /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/nppdf.so
I left this file intact (in the hopes firefox would use it, just in case I'm in
firefox at some point) but if your plugins load up in a different order from mine,
you might have to delete this file instead/as well.

summary:
echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/setack/stuff/ubuntu karmic main' >>
/etc/apt/sources.list
apt-get update
apt-get install mozplugger
rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so

Comment 66 by peng.thinkblue, Jan 07, 2010
How did you determine the path for your plugins? I know with Gecko-based browsers I
could change a setting in about:config but that page doesn't seem to work for WebKit
browsers.
