Reported by pixelman, Sep 06, 2008
Product Version : 0.2.149.28 (1777)
URLs (if applicable) :
Other browsers tested: Firefox 2, 3; IE6, 7, 8b2; Opera 9.x; Safari 3.1.2
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
     Safari 3: FAIL
    Firefox 3: OK
         IE 7: OK

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Select an area of a web page
2. Open the print dialog box
3.

What is the expected result?
Should be allowed to use "Selection" and print just what you have selected.

What happens instead?
"Selection" is grayed out; not available.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

Screenshots here: http://pixelman.webhop.org/chrome/browserprintselection.html

Maybe webkit related, since Safari has same problem as well?

This fix is an absolute necessity. Please make this a "1" priority for the sake of
printers everywhere.
Comment 5 by malenkov, Sep 16, 2008
The context menu on selected text does not contain menu item to open the print dialog
box (at least, in russian version). So you should use Ctrl-P shortcut or right-click
out of the selected text. Also preview is needed.
Comment 6 by progame, Oct 24, 2008
i agree, this is very important
Comment 7 by darren.kruse, Nov 11, 2008
vote 1. lack of this feature stopped my manager from using chromium 3 minutes after
I'd installed it. So much for faster, more secure browsing - print selection !
Comment 8 by maruelatchromium, Dec 16, 2008
This feature is more complex to implement than it seems. As a temporary work around,
you can always use copy (Ctrl-C), open Open Office Writer, paste (Ctrl-V) and print
(Ctrl-P) the snippet.

In my opinion, print selection is a standard application function and should be
incorporated into the browser ASAP. This is driving my mother in law crazy, which
makes me regret introducing this browser to her. No good deed goes unpunished. Happy
browsing.

print-management in google chrome: a real catastrophe. light-years behind the other
browsers, even ie!
Comment 15 by Visolio, Feb 01, 2009
This issue was opened five months ago. Does Google not understand how many more
people would be using Chrome if this issue was resolved. Google is a big company with
many developers and five months is a long time for an issue to be resolved. I have to
say other then this print issue, I do love Chrome!

Thanks Google!

Yes, using the print selection is important!!! Mozilla Firefox!!!
Comment 22 by joerg.schleicher, Mar 17, 2009
one thing to be done, til google fixed this: install this in your bookmarks bar: http://docs.google.com/MiscCommands?command=newdoc&redirectToDocument=true&hl=de
copy your print selection into a new document and print(only when logged in)... but
it has to be exactly the phrase, of course the same print-problem exists in docs!
Comment 23 by susanasbooks, Apr 08, 2009
This needs addressing. School/Unis are teaching students they can use this function.
They go to Chrome and can't. Personally I launch Firefox and get aggravated that I
have to do this.

Unable to print highlighted selection. This menu option goes black on pull down.
Works fine in MSFT Int Explorer.
Comment 26 by theodorejb, Apr 17, 2009
This issue is really important. I upgraded a friends computer awhile ago and
recommended that he try Chrome. He's been using it for awhile, but just today he called
me up wondering why he can't "print selection". I told him that Chrome can't do it, so
now he's left Chrome and gone back to IE. This needs to be fixed ASAP, or you'll end up
losing more customers.

Why has this still not been fixed? It's the only reason that a lot of people
(including myself) have not moved fully over to chrome from other browsers. It's such
a useful feature that should surely be easy to integrate (or at least take less than
5 months to implement)

Add support for printing selection only flag. This only adds the flag to the IPC and implements the Windows dialog interaction but does not enable this just yet.

Add Print Selection support to Chrome. This change is fairly involved since this means that the printing is done async instead of the fully synchronous mode the normal full page printing is.
This means we create an in memory copy of the selected text for printing.
This is the next step to move to fully async printing with print frame support.
This change also removes the print on demand functionality that was no longer used.

BUG=http://crbug.com/1682
TEST=The print dialog on Windows now contains an option to print selection only. Test that with various pages and various selections.

I don't mean to spam everybody, and I apologize if I am the only one with this problem,
but I figured this is the most applicable place to post... Anybody else having trouble
with print selection in Gmail and Hotmail? The print selection works if I go into the
"Print All" and select what I want to print. But if I do not, the option to "print
selection" is still grayed out.
(Note, this is after the update to 3.0.190.1)

@PishPoshBaby.com (and everyone else who may comment wondering about this)
Print selection is only available on the dev channel. the version is 3.0.190.1. If
you do not have that version, print selection will not be available. If you wish to
have that feature, change you version to the dev channel. Otherwise, I am sure it will
be released to the stable channel in time.
For more information, go to http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel

Comment 52 by fabios4rulez, Jun 24, 2009
I think this feature would be more useful if user could be allowed to print selection

When I started using Chrome, I liked it so much that I made it the default browser.
Then I ran into the issue that you can't print a selection. I couldn't believe that
Google would not think this was important to include. Judging by the length of time
this thread has existed, it still appears that Google doesn't think its important. I'll
tell you how important it is for me.... Firefox has now been set back to being my
default browser.

Hi, I'm using the latest Chrome beta for Windows (4.0.223.16), and when I attempt to
use the print selection radio button, no print job is submitted to my printer. No error
message is produced, and the command appears to be ignored. Sometimes, after this
failure, the print dialog box fails to appear after clicking Ctrl-P on the keyboard.
Print functionality (whole document, not selection) returns upon rebooting Chrome.

As I tweeted in October, Print Selection worked. But alas it no longer works after I
upgraded to version 4X. I love Google Chrome - it is fast and the interface is by far
the best browser design IMO. But without PRINT SELECTION, the time savings bank is
negative.
