88 people starred this issue and may be notified of changes. Back to list

Reported by eug.s...@gmail.com, Jul 15, 2012
Chrome Version : 21.0.1180.41 (Official Build 146467) beta-m
OS Version : Windows
Type of computer : Acer 4820TG-7805
Network info : Wired, Belkin F5D8236-4 v2 (01)

Please specify Area-* of the system to which this bug/feature applies.
Flash videos

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Set up dual monitors with different resolutions
2. Play a flash video (such as Youtube) on the browser on the secondary monitor
3. Press full-screen button

What is the expected output?
The full screen video should play on the secondary monitor at the monitor's resolution

What do you see instead?
The full screen video plays on the primary monitor using the secondary monitor's resolution.

How frequently does this problem reproduce? (Always, sometimes, hard to
reproduce?)
Always.

What is the impact to the user, and is there a workaround? If so, what is
it?
The workaround is not to watch Flash videos full screen, or to use a different browser (Firefox works fine).

Please provide any additional information below.

I tried 22.0.1208.0 (Official Build 146771) canary. It worked correctly (on the correct monitor, with correct resolution).
Haven't got a chance to try beta yet.

Do you see the same problem on canary?

Works for me also (on Windows 7).

What version of Windows?

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

And yes, I did try it on Canary and had the same problem.

So this is happening on both my desktop and laptop running the same version of Chrome. I don't have access to my laptop at the moment, but my desktop has an ATI Radeon HD5870, running ATI Catalyst version 12.6.

I don't have any special display-related software running that I can think of. Again, this is only happening with Chrome, other browsers work fine.

On about:plugins or chrome://plugins you need to click the "+ Details" to show the individual files under each entry.

Look for:

Name:	Shockwave Flash
Description:	Shockwave Flash 11.3 r31
Version:	11.3.31.222
Location:	[Your_User_Directory]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\21.0.1180.57\PepperFlash\pepflashplayer.dll

And you should be able to disable this individual entry.

I have a similar issue. My fullscreen player is appearing on the correct player, but when I click on another monitor it kills the fullscreen. This is true for all flash players. Happening since the last update. I couldn't find a more relevant bug.
Aug 1, 2012
#28 ad...@wescook.ca
Yes, I have two monitors. The larger one is 1920x1200, the smaller is 1440x900. Orientation is landscape on both.

My video card is the cleverly named "N460GTX Hawk Talon Attack".

In the past the behavior was that as long as the videos were playing, I could click on the other monitor and not disrupt it. Though if the video were paused, it would kill fullscreen. This is definitely the case on Youtube, but I cannot be as certain of the behavior on other sites.

Let me know if you need any more information. But please don't write my full address here, I'd rather not have bots scrape it. Thanks.

I'm also having the same issues full screening flash.
Up until yesterday I was able to play bbc olympics (iplayer) ony second monitor full screen and continue working on my first monitor without taking the second monitor out of full screen.
Now when I full screen on second monitor it puts it on first screen at the second monitors resolution.
Tried the fix from post #10 but now goes out of full screen when I work in the first screen.

Pls fix, it's driving me mad!!

It doesn't look like anyone has mentioned it yet, so I'll throw this out there: It's not just Flash that has this problem, YouTube's HTML5 player cannot be properly fullscreened on a secondary monitor either. It seems to be a bug with fullscreening applications in general within Chrome.

#42 andyhost...@gmail.com
I just solved this problem for my setup: new HD5450 out HDMI to TV. There's a plugin MaximizeFlash which recognizes any flash video. I also tried running IE Tab Classic, which, I'm guessing, emulates IE. I open the webpage and click the little "e" in the URL bar, and then it works. Comment 10 worked as well... just sharing other options that work.

139465 has been incorrectly merged with this issue. 139465 has nothing to do with the video being played on the wrong monitor but rather a separate issue where the video loses fullscreen if the monitor with the fullscreen video loses focus.
Aug 3, 2012
#51 jakub.wa...@j4w.cz
Fullscreen windows pops out on the correct monitor, but the fullscreen mode is canceled after click anywhere on different monitor.

Disabling pep player and restarting chrome seems that fixed it.
Aug 3, 2012
#52 viettrun...@chromium.org
@50: Thanks, you're right and I unmerged. This bug is about fullscreen not *displaying* on the correct monitor (which, as far as we can tell, only happens with particular video cards/drivers).

Issue 140366 (and issue 139465 ... etc.?) are about leaving fullscreen when you click on a different monitor.
Aug 3, 2012
#54 viettrun...@chromium.org
@53: That's  issue 140366 . (See my explanation in @52.)

@41: That's good to know; I'm guessing that means this affects other fullscreen modes in Chrome as well.

I was finally able to reproduce this problem (fullscreen appearing on the wrong monitor)... and realized that it doesn't repro on Chrome Canary, but only on Chrome 21 (Beta or Stable).

If some of the people affected could try out Chrome Canary and see if that's also the case for you, I'd appreciate it.

@60: That screenshot does not appear to be using Flash fullscreen. You've probably been opted into an HTML5 video experiment on YouTube (which will only apply to certain videos).

@everyone else:
- Canary should "fix" it for those using video cards with non-hybrid/switchable ATI (now AMD) GPUs. We understand what triggers the issue, and will be investigating further.
- Those with hybrid/switchable ATI/AMD GPUs (nearly all laptops, I guess) should still be affected by the bug on Canary.
- I'm curious about those with non-ATI/AMD GPUs: Is the bug you're experiencing really this one -- getting fullscreen on the wrong monitor (possibly at the wrong size, if your screens have different resolutions)? Or maybe you're running XP? (I'll talk to our GPU guys some more to understand what other factors could trigger this bug.)

We're working to get a fix ASAP, but of course we don't want to trigger other potential issues by rushing out a partial fix prematurely. Thanks for bearing with us!
Aug 4, 2012
#65 richardj...@gmail.com
I restarted my chrome today due to an update and since then I have been having this problem, I don't know if this new update is this "Canary" or not. But if it is then the problem does indeed still exist.
Aug 4, 2012
#66 grg...@gmail.com
Canary is the new name for beta version or something, so its not what you got probably.
My got updated to '21.0.1180.60 m' day or two ago, and that problem appeared.

For me this temporary fix worked: go to chrome://plugins/ expand detailed view, and disable 'Shockwave Flash 11.3 r31'. It should use the r30 version then I guess.

The only bug remains is that fullscreen turns off if you click anywhere on the other screen. (Usually when video sound is muted or video paused). Seems like recently fixed in flash version that used in IE.
Aug 4, 2012
#67 richardj...@gmail.com
I use multiple things at once, so I need it to stay full screen whilst I do other things... so I'm temporarily using Firefox instead. But if other chrome users I know have this problem I can explain now.

+jbauman, since he's other GPU guy

@65: Chrome Canary: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/chromesxs/
(You can run it side-by-side with other versions of Chrome. Canary is basically an alpha version that's updated daily. It's not meant for regular usage, and may be horribly broken on any given day.)

Notes to self (and other Chromium engineers): --disable-image-transport-surface (IIRC) will trigger this on Canary, at least with an ATI/AMD card. I'll have to try it on a dual-monitor Nvidia set-up to see if it also happens there.

It looks like it only happens with Flash, not with HTML5 fullscreen. Why would that be?
Aug 4, 2012
#71 Oppfinna...@gmail.com
Happens here with 21.0.1180.60 on W7x64pro.
AMD Radeon HD 4290

Please don't roll out broken updates...
Aug 4, 2012
#72 brettw@chromium.org
jbauman: Flash uses a different fullscreen codepath than the "regular" fullscreen (we hope to unify this in the next quarter).
Aug 4, 2012
#73 bruce.a....@gmail.com

I'm experiencing the same issue as comment #66. When using the Pepper version of Flash clicking outside the fullscreen Flash window results in full window mode being canceled. This is counter to the NPAPI multi display behavior intentionally introduced by Adobe in Flash 11 where with NPAPI Flash the Flash window remains fullscreen while you interact with windows on another screen.

@81 , try and set the laptop as predefined monitor
Aug 5, 2012
#83 dougiebr...@gmail.com
@82 I believe I have. It's the main display (google gives me no instructions for 'predefined monitor').

The OP seems to have been edited to reference a different error (video playing the incorrect resolution).

Just to be clear on my issue. The fullscreen playback works correctly on the secondary monitor (correct resolution etc) right up until the point that I try to click anything on the primary monitor. It then kicks it out of fullscreen back to web.

For those of you seeing this issue, please can you check canary. We have what we think is a fix on our Canary version (a bleeding edge testing version of Chrome) and want to verify if this fixes the issue for you.If you're experiencing it, can you install Chrome Canary (which is on version 22.0.1228.0 right now) and let us know if it resolves this problem for you?

You can install Chrome Canary by going to https://tools.google.com/dlpage/chromesxs/. It runs side-by-side with your existing Chrome version, so you do NOT need to uninstall Chrome first. Please also make sure that you have NOT changed your plugin settings to not use PPAPI.

Note: After verifying this fix for us, we also don't advise continuing to use Chrome Canary in place of your regular web browsing unless you're comfortable with instability and unpredictable behavior (it is meant for developers and early adopters).

Latest Canary fixes issue for me - full screen stays on the correct monitor while my beta install reproduces the bug every time.

Side note... taking focus away from the full screen video takes the video out of full screen. For instance, it is impossible to have a YouTube video playing full screen on monitor #2 and do something else on monitor #1. Is this normal?

#94 mtit...@gmail.com
Same as cnan...@gmail.com, latest canary can do fullscreen on the right monitor, but it will got out of full screen just by taking focus to other screen

so there is no point on having fullscreen if its like this.

#95 mtit...@gmail.com
ps: because for installing canary, I enable pepper again in chrome stable.

Now there is no problem anymore even with the pepper enabled (can do fullscreen on second monitor on the right monitor, and still fullscreen when lose focus)

weird?

Downloaded and tried latest canary side-by-side. Issue resolved.

But I don't get the same problem others are having with it coming out of full-screen when I click in a different monitor, seems to work fine for me.

@94, yes that's another bug we also have a fix for that, just not in this canary yet :) hopefully both will be working tomorrow and we can confirm and take the fixes back to beta and stable, too. working diligently to resolve. thank you all so much for testing!

What was the fix? (I think you put the wrong link.)
Aug 6, 2012
#104 g...@google.com
This doesn't fix the issue completely. Steps to reproduce problems

1) Setup 2 monitors of different resolutions (or set them each monitor to different resolution control panel)
2) Open Chrome to http://www.ted.com/talks/daphne_koller_what_we_re_learning_from_online_education.html an d play video
3) Move window to 2nd monitor
4) Pick Fullscreen (it's correctly on 2nd monitor)
5) Exit fullscreen (press esc)
6) Move window to 1st monitor
7) Press fullscreen. Video is wrong size (see screenshot)
8) Press ESC to exit fullscreen
9) Move window back to 2nd monitor
10) Press fullscreen. Video is wrong aspect (see screenshot)

getting better but still issues. The aspect issue from comment #104 is still there.
Repeat from step 3 a couple more times and you'll eventually get the case where the flash pops out the wrong size and behind the window it popped out of

A temporary fix for Windows 7 is to use the Win+Shift+Arrow Keys to move your fullscreen window. For a more permanent solution, you can disable the Flash Plugin/parts of it. For more information: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!starred/chrome/qdBApWR6xPc%5B1-25%5D

I hope I helped someone, I realize this might have been posted before I just wanted to make sure it's not buried in dxdiag copypasta.

I had a similar problem with full-screen. Any time I would click on the 'other' monitor the full screen monitor would leave full screen like you had pressed the esc key. The update from 1160 to 1180 fixed that for me. I did not have the offending .dll in my plug-ins. I have a nvidia dual card, win7-32 and the error did not appear in an alternate browser.
so, chromium project - thanx for the update.

@114: This bug is about fullscreen appearing on the wrong monitor. Please file a separate bug about the aspect ratio problem, so it can be tracked properly. Thanks.

@115, @116: That's  issue 140366 .

All: I'm closing this bug to further comments, since there's too much confusion. Please file a separate bug (and include version numbers) if you're still having issues with fullscreen mode (with the current version of Chrome). Thanks.
