Setup Instructions

Note that this application requires Android 2.2 ("Froyo") or later.

  1. Download the Google Chrome to Phone Extension application to your Android device from http://code.google.com/p/chrometophone/downloads (make sure Settings->Applications->Unknown Sources is checked).
  2. Start the Google Chrome to Phone Extension application on the phone and follow the instructions.
  3. Choose the account to register with (this must match the account you sign in to with Google Chrome to Phone Extension on the desktop). Not that Google App accounts are not supported.

How do I get it to open a map link in maps? It has opened Google Maps in the browser on my phone instead.

Comment by timfletc...@gmail.com, May 23, 2010

Works perfectly for me in Canada on WIND mobile. This is very impressive!

Comment by photosof...@gmail.com, May 23, 2010

No, not working for me. I have the desktop and the phone "hooked up" (registered) to the same account but when I try to use the extension I get:

Error sending link: Error: Server Error

The server encountered an error and could not complete your request. If the problem persists, please report your problem and mention this error message and the query that caused it.

The link on "report" does nothing.

Comment by srikkant...@gmail.com, May 23, 2010

How do I send maps? I created direction in google maps desktop but when I click send it doesnt do anything.

Comment by jrm...@gmail.com, May 23, 2010

Similar to what @srikkanth.m said - finding directions in Google Maps in the chrome browser and then clicking the "Chrome to Phone" extension button sends the link to the phone, the Maps application loads on the phone, but it does not load the directions that were found.

Comment by trygv...@gmail.com, May 23, 2010

I made a simple javascript so it can be used in other browsers as well.

Here is instructions on how to use this in other browsers: http://t.pakten.org/android/chrome-to-phone-other-browsers.html

Comment by buchmoy...@gmail.com, May 23, 2010

This would be even cooler if it went in the other direction as well. Using the share option in the browser on the phone you could send webpages right to your computer that would open.

Comment by omarj...@gmail.com, May 23, 2010

awesome...very handy

Comment by ahdch...@gmail.com, May 24, 2010

trygveaa's javascript would not work for me in IE6, which I'm forced to use at work. I followed his instructions, but replaced the javascript in the bookmark with the following:

javascript:void(window.open('http://chrometophone.appspot.com/send?title='+encodeURIComponent(document.title)+'&url='+encodeURIComponent(document.location.href)));

This version opens up an unnecessary window, but it's all I could figure out for IE6. If anyone with a better handle of javascript than me can improve this, please post.

Comment by joshuavo...@gmail.com, May 24, 2010

very cool. almost as fun as watching squirrels fight.

Comment by jim...@google.com, May 24, 2010

Where are the troubleshooting tips? This totally doesn't work and I would like to work out why. I believe I have followed all the instructions but it does nothing. Browser extension installed, android app installed and running, device registered, matching google accounts. I click the chrometophone thing in my browser and I see a pop-up: "sending link to phone..." and the pop-up never goes away until I click on something else. And nothing happens on my phone. Advice?

Comment by hasanov....@gmail.com, May 24, 2010

is it supposed to work with Google Apps account? I keep getting "user unknown" when registering, and "server error" when trying to send link

Comment by syg...@gmail.com, May 24, 2010

On my home computer (with home wifi) this works flawlessly with Chrome/Froyo/N1. But at work, with my work computer's Chrome and my work network (wifi), the links look like they get sent (no errors) but don't appear on the phone.

Comment by yuyh...@gmail.com, May 24, 2010

come on add this app to the Market that only Froyo 2.2 (or higher) system can search for it so that we don't have to check back this page and set it to auto update.

Comment by Klaus.We...@gmail.com, May 24, 2010

The extension apparently sends the link shown in the browser's URL bar to the phone, so if you're on http://maps.google.com/ it will send you to the maps home view and won't send the current directions.

A workaround is to use the maps "Link" tool (top right above the map), copy the URL and paste it into a new browser window, then use the extension to send that. That's of course a bit clunky, but I'm assuming this will become better integrated.

Comment by chuday...@gmail.com, May 25, 2010

for maps, I believe you have to enable it from within android options from the app itself (checkbox)

Comment by ltn...@gmail.com, Jun 28, 2010

Works well on my HTC Desire with froyo installed. Would be nice if I could turn off the notification sound though -- I know I've got a new link, because I just sent it!

Comment by apfbruce@gmail.com, Jun 29, 2010

Does this mechanism mean that the phone maintains a TCP connection to a Google server? If so, how does it manage battery power? For example, push email (similar concept) kills your battery - TCP connection keeps the radio circuitry alive - possibly the biggest power drain component of the phone!)...

Comment by bill...@gmail.com, Jul 2, 2010

It worked fine in May and the beginning of June. When I went to use it towards the end of June, it didn't work until I updated both the app on the phone and the Chrome extension, to the newest version - released on June 10th/11th.

It works fine again.

How is it supposed to work? (Send text and phone numbers?)

Windows 7 pro 64 bit, Chrome 5.0.375.99, Froyo FRF91, N1

Comment by dag.rende, Jul 5, 2010

Awesome! send web link worked directly. To send map loc, I had to get the complete map URL by clicking the loc, more>Send and copying the url into browser. Then I could successfully use the C2P button. Some instructions on all this has to be added to this site. What I really like with this (in addition to a useful app) is the nice source code, for me to learn how to do things like this in my own apps.

Comment by dag.rende, Jul 5, 2010

I got send phone number working, I selected a phone number and clicked the C2P button. After a long while the phone call opened with the number on my phone. This app needs better user interface feed-back to be really usable. I tried selecting non phone no text, but that didn't get added to the clipboard on the phone - the phone number was still there when I tried. Sending phone number and text would be better using the right-click-menu on top of the text. Now after some minutes the text was received on my phone.

Comment by joann.br...@gmail.com, Jul 5, 2010

I get a Parse Error on my Droid Incredible. Doesn't matter if I download from device or from PC based browser. Any suggestions?

Comment by good.evi...@gmail.com, Jul 7, 2010

This would be a lot nicer if you didn't have to create an account to make it work. Why not have the option of sending it via bluetooth, so that all you have to do is pair your phone and PC?

Comment by bobisdan...@gmail.com, Jul 7, 2010

i get a parse error too on Droid

Comment by project member patrick....@gmail.com, Jul 13, 2010

ChromeToPhone? will only work with Android 2.2 as it relies on the C2DM framework that was introduced as part of 2.2, hence I doubt it will ever be backported to 2.1.

Comment by troy.h...@gmail.com, Jul 20, 2010

Would be nice to have the android part of the application open either the default android browser or some sort of viewer. Presently, when I send a phone number to the phone, the android notification bar application opens the phone. Likewise, the android notification bar app will launch the browser for a URL. However, when I have sent arbitrary text to the phone (which seems to require firefox BTW) the app running on the notification bar just clear the notification and tosses the sent text. I can't even read it all when the text sent is more than a short sentence.

HTC Evo w/ Froyo 2.2 works great for me, thank you for this App.

Is there a plan to add a push from Chrome Google Maps Directions to Google Navigation on the phone instead of static directions into Google Maps on the phone? Thanks.

Comment by robert.d...@gmail.com, Aug 3, 2010

If you need the Chrome extension, in your Chrome web browser go here: http://code.google.com/p/chrometophone/downloads/list and click on chrometophone-extension-v1.0.crx

Comment by iam...@gmail.com, Aug 3, 2010

Using Froyo 2.2 on a Motorola Droid... I installed and registered the Android app... I installed and registered the Chrome extension... both are registered to the same gmail account (normal gmail, not Google Apps)... anything I try to send says "Sent to Phone"... however, the phone does nothing. Nothing at all. Are there steps I can take to debug this?

Comment by iam...@gmail.com, Aug 3, 2010

So, I solved my own problem. It would seem that my phone's internal storage was running low. It had only 24.7 megabytes free (not the SD card, the internal storage). It seems the "low space" message appears at the 25 megabyte mark.

When the phone's internal storage is considered low, it will not receive messages via the Chrome to Phone extension. To make space, I deleted the Google Earth application (it takes up 25 megabytes). I'd love for the Google Earth application to be able to be installed on the SD card like some other apps, then I can install it again. In the meantime, this seems to be working just fine now. Thanks.

Comment by Dean.Hay...@gmail.com, Aug 4, 2010

Using Froyo on an HTC Desire; scanned the QR code and downloaded the .apk, and nothing seems to happen, no new icon anywhere. What next?

Couldn't get the extension to work in Chrome, however it worked in Firefox.

Changed the extension to work as a page_action rather than a browser action works fine now, however need to be running the dev channel of chrome to access the contextmenus API to allow sending selected text to the phone.

Comment by bettervideo@gmail.com, Aug 23, 2010

Works on Moto Droid running stock 2.2 -- sort of. The copied text is received by the phone and stored in its clipboard. But apparently the Android Web browser's address bar is not recognized as a text box. So no "paste" option shows up when you long press it. So technically, yes, I was able to send a URL to my phone. But now I can't use it to navigate anywhere. #fail

Comment by mark.br...@gmail.com, Aug 28, 2010

How do I change the app settings on the phone? I'd like to change it to notifications instead of opening automatically, and also change the default browser. But the app isn't showing up as an icon that I can open, and in settings>applications, I tried clearing defaults and that didn't change anything. I'm never offered any options to change default apps, etc. Also - while the chrome to phone icon works fine in chrome, highlighting and right clicking anything doesn't offer me the option to send it to the phone.

Hi,

I'm using Andriod 2.3.4 on my Google Nexus S. Though I'm able to locate and download chrometophone app on my PC's web browser (Google Chorme), I'm unable to locate this app on my phone's Android market.

Tried the following: 1. Scanned the QR code (http://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chrometophone) from the page that appears on the PC's web browser while signing in for the first time to browser's chrometophone. --> It says "The requested item could not be found." 2. Directed my phone's browser to below link (after ensuring that Settings->Applications->Unknown Sources is checked): http://code.google.com/p/chrometophone/downloads & http://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chrometophone ----> It says "404. That's an error. The requested URL /p/chrometophone/download was not found on this server. That's all we know." 3. Tried searching in the Android Market from my phone - This app does not appear on my phone's Android Market but appears on my web browser's (Google Chrome)Android Market.

I do not understand the following link says: "Note: Android 2.2 required. Chrome to Phone is powered by the Android Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) service, which requires Android 2.2 or later. Supports Chrome 6 and above." http://code.google.com/p/chrometophone/

I'm using Android 2.3.4 but still am unable to view this app (for download) on my Android phone.

Please help.

Thanks in advance. Pratyush.

This is really nice ! I was wondering if there is a project to also go the other way : send links or urls to Chrome from the mobile device. that would be very handy, as a transplatform tool, starting reading on desktop, then on mobile in the transports, and sending it back on device to finish reading at work (for example).
