Introduction

Welcome! Below are questions I've been asked more than once, or concepts I'd like to clarify.

Q&A

Can you add feature XYZ?

No problem! Just open a new issue and describe what you want done. I cannot guarantee I'll get it done, but I usually make an effort eventually.

If you're desperate to get a feature - bribe me! (Don't worry, it doesn't have to be money.)

When was feature XYZ added?

See the VersionHistory.

Why haven't you implemented feature XYZ yet?

I'm a family man, most of my time is spent at a full-time job and with my family. That means the only free time I have is usually in the wee AM's.

Is the Read It Later list stored on the computer?

It is not. The entire list is re-downloaded every time the user starts his browser. In the future, the list will be cached, and only the list of updates will be downloaded.

Where is the Read It Later list stored?

Well, the whole Read It Later service was created by Nate Weiner, and the Orbvious Interest extension is simply an clone of the Firefox extension he wrote. Therefore, just like the Firefox extension, this extension reads and saves the list on readitlaterlist.com's servers.

Why this extension has to know the "list of installed apps, extensions, and themes"?

That's the "management" permssion. The extension uses it to check its own version, and notify the user when a new version is installed.

Is there a way to remove a website from the list completely and not just added it to the archived list?

No, but only because that functionality isn't available to anyone but the owner of Read It Later, Nate Wiener. When I asked him when could I add that to my extension, he said he's working on it for V3 (version 3), but since it isn't synchronized yet, he doesn't want others to use it.

Issue #77  is exactly about this, and I promise I'll fix it as soon it becomes possible!

How long does it take to update my Read It Later list on their servers? I want it to sync with my mobile device!

That sounds like an easy question to answer, but the answer is a little more precise and nit-picky than you'd expect. So bear with me, OK?

In essence, as soon as you add a page to Orbvious Interest, it's already been saved to Read It Later's servers on readitlater.com

The next tricky part is when does the mobile device refresh from Read It Later servers. The creator of Read It Later, Nate Weiner, has built apps that avoid refreshing too much. This is to avoid straining the servers.

In other words, mobile apps usually won't refresh by themselves. I'd recommend manually refreshing your mobile app to force it to synchronize with the Read It Later servers. As soon as you do, you'll see the updated list.

Is there a way to mark a page to read later with just one click? Is there no other option but clicking the icon and then clicking "Mark As Unread"?

Sadly, Google Chrome extensions cannot create icons in two places, which is exactly what I would like to do - have one Browser Action icon with a popup, and another Page Action icon in the URL bar.

The quick solution is to configure a shortcut key in the Orbvious Interest's options page, in the tab "Page Options". Then, in a single key-stroke, you'll add pages.

Otherwise, I'd recommend using one of the other Google Chrome extensions for Read It Later that provide single-click icons. I don't have a preference, so I cannot recommend one over any other. Try searching for "read it later" in the extension gallery: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/read%20it%20later

Issue #48 is about this, and you can star it to follow any updates.

Comment by teja...@gmail.com, Jul 10, 2011

Where is the RIL stored? I would prefer if it was stored in Google services, rather than a 3rd party website.

@arigoldx: I'm sorry - I have no way of contacting you to reply (I can't seem to find your Google user profile). Please open an issue at http://code.google.com/p/chromeril/issues/entry so we can get to the bottom of this, OK?
