An introduction on how to translate browser-update.org

Browser-update.org can be translated using gettext tools.

The central template file is written in english and can be found here.

To translate the template in your language, you need to load it in a .po file editor, like Poedit or Gorm

After you've created the .po file for your language, just send it to one of the project owners.

The .po files for already started translations can be found here.

OK, but (pro forma) which language is the "leading" that defines the current content state? Greets, Carsten.

Comment by project member niic...@gmail.com, Apr 6, 2009

Carsten, it is english.

Comment by project member niic...@gmail.com, Apr 9, 2009

Was genau muss in der update.js übersetzt werden?

Comment by project member david.da...@gmail.com, Apr 9, 2009

Currently the "leading" language is some combination of english and german. It should be english, but the english version lags behind the german. After the gettext-branch has landed I hope we will be able to get this fixed by letting german lag behind (you must translate to german not from german).

update.js currently only supports german and english, this has to be fixed. Perhaps the gettext-branch helps here, too. (see ticket #25)

in update.js there needs to be a AJAX JSON call to something like 'http://browser-update.org/language.' + ll + '.json'.

The JSON structure could be something like this.

   {
      warning: 'my warning message',
      updatelink: 'http://browser-update.org/nl/update.html'
   }

No - translating is not easy at all. Tried to contact project lead with no success. Somehow found that browser-update.org is hosted on google, downloaded source, translated and now i got no ideas how to submit it. Any help?

Comment by arnis.la...@gmail.com, Sep 22, 2009

This project is dead. :/

Comment by project member joss...@gmx.de, Sep 22, 2009

No, its just slow at the moment. We are trying to find a new Translation-System.

Comment by i...@jugend-access.ch, Sep 29, 2009

No luck with the gettext system?

Comment by project member david.da...@gmail.com, Jan 4, 2010

The gettext-branch has landed, so translations should be easy now. See updated doc above.

I can suggest http://99translations.com/ it's free for open source projects and offers a nice web-based translation ui and gettext integration.
