Version 1.1.6

December 22, 2010

Version 1.1.6 is again a small, mostly bug-fix release. But, like the previous version, it does incorporate a few new user-requested features:

  • Addition of entry numbers to bottle labels and competition recipe forms.
  • Addition of a co-brewer field for each entry.
  • Paging of data lists (e.g., the list of entries or particpants).
  • Use of the ultra slick jQuery plug-in DataTables for sorting and filtering of lists (e.g., entries, particpants, winners, etc.).
  • Added the ability to assign judges and stewards to multiple locations.

Version 1.1.5

July 23, 2010

The full release of BCOE version 1.1.5 is now available.

This version is a small, mostly bug-fix release. But, like the previous version, it does incorporate a few new user-requested features:

  • Ability to enter more than one competition official, their positions, and their email addresses.
  • Use of a captcha-enabled contact form instead of mailto: links for all competition officials. A spam prevention measure.
  • Added a notes line for drop off locations. Use for adding any extra information such as the time of pick up, who to ask for at the location, etc.
  • Sponsors are now tiered by rank from 1 through 5. 1 is considered the highest tier for display purposes. Great for grouping sponsors by their donation level to the competition.
  • Two new entry form printouts, in addition to the BJCP-style recipe form: simple metric and simple U.S. Admins choose one of the three for their installation.

Version 1.1.4

June 16, 2010

Just in time for the 2010 National Hombrewers Conference, the full release of BCOE version 1.1.4 is now available.

This version is a small, bug-fix release. It does incorporate some great new user-requested features such as:

  • Ability to designate dates for registration begin and end. Automatically provides the availability of registration within a certain date range.
  • Ability to display BOS winners for mead and cider in addition to beer.
  • Streamilined printing of entry forms thanks to Gustav Foseid and the Tiny But Strong templating engine. Look for more use of this as development of BCOE moves forward.

Version 1.1.3

April 12, 2010

The full release of BCOE version 1.1.3 is now available. A big thanks to all the beta testers who helped to find and report bugs. 1.1.3 is a stronger release because of your invaluable help. Cheers!!

1.1.3 incorporates some great new user-requested features such as:

  • Ability to designate BJCP Styles accepted.
  • Ability to create a custom style.
  • Entry of multiple locations and judging dates.
  • Mapping and driving directions to judging locations.
  • Ability to assign styles, judges, and stewards to particular judging locations.
  • Ability for judges and stewards to indicate their 1st and 2nd preference for dates and locations when registering.
  • Ability to export judge, steward, and styles by location.
  • Ability for entry fees to be one price for the first entry and a second price for all following entries.

Version 1.1.2

January 27, 2010

Version 1.1.2 released. Addresses a few bug issues and adds:

  • The ability to display archived winners of previous contests.
  • The ability to place a cap on the entry fees accumulated by users (e.g., $5 per entry, $15 cap for unlimited entries).
  • Improved setup procedures.
  • A check so setup cannot be performed more than once.

Version 1.1.1

December 18, 2009

Version 1.1.1 is a bug fix and usability release. The focus was upon improved ease of use for Administrators, including additional export options, shortcut menus, etc.

Version 1.1 addresses various bugs in Version 1.0 and adds some nifty new features:

  • Users can designate the manner in which a grain is used, as per the AHA competition entry forms (e.g., Mash, Steep, etc.).
  • Display of custom competition logo.
  • Display of sponsors and their associated logos, websites, etc.
  • Export of promo materials
  • Ability to designate and export only paid entrants instead of exporting all and sorting it out later.
  • Mass update of paid entrants from a single screen (Admins only).
  • Ability for Admins to designate payment options: cash, check, or PayPal (or any combination thereof).
  • Ability for Admins to designate whether entrants paying via PayPal will cover the associated PayPal transaction fees.
  • Ability for Admins to flag entrants as "winners" in their respective categories for display after the competition is completed.
  • Display of winners after judging has concluded.

About

The Brew Competition Online Entry (BCOE) system is a online application to assist homebrew contest hosts (of the beer variety) to collect, store, and output participant and entry data.

This is an open-source application inspired by the online entry system employed by the American Homebrewers Association for their national competition.

One of the biggest challenges of organizing a beer/mead/cider homebrewing competition is knowing who has entered what and how many entries there are come contest day. BCOE provides an online interface to collect this information beforehand and output it to compliant software for use on contest day.

BCOE collects contest participant information including name, address, phone, and email address. It also collects and associates entries for each participant based upon 2008 BJCP styles. Participants can have the option to enter their recipes by hand or import them using BeerXML-compliant files.

Once the participant enters their brews, they can print the necessary documentation consisting of BJCP style entry forms and bottle labels in a standardized form.

Registered participants can:

  • Add/edit/delete as many of their own entries as they wish
  • Add entries using BeerXML-compliant files (which are outputted by Beer Smith, BrewBlogger, or other brewing software packages)
  • Edit their personal information
  • Change their password and/or reset their password if they've forgotten it
  • Pay for entries online (if the site Admin enables PayPal payment)
  • Print contest entry forms with pre-formatted information (participant name, style, brew name, ingredients, etc.)

Administrators can:

  • Add/edit/delete any entry or participant
  • Add/edit/delete their own entries
  • Output participant and entry information to interface with Homebrew Competition Coordination Program (HCCP) - a Windows-based competition tracking program - or CSV files
  • View available judges and stewards from the participant pool
  • View all entries and filter by style
  • Use the same installation competition after competition by archiving previous competition data with the Archive feature
Requires a web server with PHP 5 and MySQL 4 or 5.
