Introduction

Welcome to the iTunes-LAME project page!

How To Install

Download the ZIP file, and extract the application. Drag the iTunes-LAME application into your Applications folder (or anywhere else).

To integrate iTunes-LAME into the Scripts menu of iTunes, follow these steps:

  1. Control-click on the iTunes-LAME application, and select "Show Package Contents."
  2. Navigate to Contents, then Resources.
  3. Control-click on the "Import with LAME...scpt" file and select "Make Alias."
  4. Finally, drag the alias into your "Library/iTunes/Scripts" folder.

Future Plans

At the moment, the primary goal of this project is to restore the ID3 tagging functionality that was broken with the latest iTunes updates. This is nearly finished, and really just needs more testing. Please head on over to the Downloads section to grab the latest test release!

Going forward, we can use this Wiki to brainstorm ideas for new features that we might like to add. Head on over to FeatureBrainstorm and add your idea.

How do we join the mailing list for this project?

Comment by project member joelnord...@gmail.com, Oct 3, 2007

I don't think there is one set up yet... guess we'll need to create a Google group for it.

Comment by project member joelnord...@gmail.com, Oct 26, 2007

I've just created a group for this project if anyone wants to go over there for discussion...

I'd love to compile the latest version of LAME myself but I can't find hints on using the right flags, commands etc. under Leopard. Any suggestions for a MBP CoreDuo? model?

Thanks, Pat

how to install? i just follow the instruction how to instal, but i cannot, anyone can help?

Comment by southc...@gmail.com, Apr 25, 2008

@ibudtz: What happens when you follow the instructions at the top of this page? Did you follow every step? Before step 4, close iTunes if it's running. You might need to create a new folder called "Scripts" inside /Library/iTunes or ~/Library/iTunes. If you use /Library/iTunes, the script will be available inside iTunes to all users; if you use ~/Library/iTunes (the Library folder inside your user home folder), it will only be available to your user account (but others can install the script by following the same steps). Once the script is installed, open iTunes and look for the AppleScript? logo () on the menu bar.

Yeah, the script wasn't showing up for me. The aliasing method above takes care of it. It's a great help with getting sweet, sweet audio.

Any chance on a Windows port?

How do I compile on OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)?

Comment by Paul.Cas...@gmail.com, Nov 21, 2009

This is a fantastic tool and still works, yes, in Snow Leopard and iTunes 9.x. LAME v3.98 is also out there and includes many enhancements above v3.97. Try Googling for "itunes-lame 3.98". Many thanks to everyone for these hacks!

Comment by watso...@gmail.com, Feb 20, 2010

specifically for 3.98 interfacing look at post #30 on this thread: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=65534&st=25

Comment by watso...@gmail.com, Feb 20, 2010

i'm going to paste those instructions right here, in case the other post vanishes for some reason. visit the link above if you want instructions for compiling etc... i'll also add this link, which teaches you which encoding settings to put into the "encoding options" box in iTunes-LAME. (i use -V0 --no-hist -- this gives a great encoding and fixes the bug mentioned below)

iTunes-LAME with LAME 3.98 for users who don't want to compile the sources themselves

  1. Get iTumes-LAME 2.0.9 (34) here.
  2. Get LAME 3.98 compiled for Mac OS by hydrogenaudio member 'krmathis' here.
  3. Replace the LAME binary in the iTunes-LAME package (Right-Click on iTunes-LAME -> show package content -> Replace contents/Resources/lame)
  4. Create an Alias of "Import with LAME....scpt" (i.e. contents/Resources/Import with LAME....scpt) and move it to "/Library/iTunes/Scripts". Most likely you will have to create this folder.
  5. Done.

Problem: While importing the progress bar will jump wildly and the display of the remaining time is shifted and probably not readable at all.

Cause: LAME 3.98 displays a histogram of bitrates when encoding with VBR. The output of this histogram is not expected by iTunes-LAME.

Solution: Add ' --nohist' to the encoding options. This won't change the encoding but supresses the output of the histogram.

Tried it this morning... just wanted to say thanks, awesome tool. Where do we put feature requests ;-) (it would be nice if the re-encoded file preserved the original filename, without the "1" extension)

Does iTunes-Lame save any of its settings/preferences outside of its .app directory?

I'm asking because I'm running it from a different account than the one I originally installed it in, and it is trying to save the mp3s in the original account (which results in an error). Deleting iTunes-Lame from the Applications folder and reinstalling a newly downloaded version doesn't make a difference, so I figure it's getting the path to the desired destination folder from somewhere outside the .app directory.

Thanks for any help!

Comment by bradkno...@gmail.com, Oct 23, 2010

Found it! I had to delete the file:

~/Library/Preferences/com.blacktree.itunes-lame.plist
