What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. I followed the iClarified instructions on how to install Boxee on my Apple
TV (Mac) Found
here: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=3080
I followed this, although when it came to downloading the dmg file I had to
choose this one:
2Z695-5660-029.dmg as it was the only one that worked.
2. It all installed fine
3. I plugged my usb into my apple tv and all seemed fine, the script ran etc.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expected to see a menu with XBMC/Boxee - updater and follow the rest of the
iClarified
instructions. Although nothing appeared. Instead my regular menus appeared
with an added
one that says:
SOFTWARE MENU
3rd Party Plugins
Manage Built in
Scripts
Restart Finder
Settings

None of these menus work, if you click on them, nothing

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
iMac OSX 10.6.2

Please provide any additional information below.
I only bought the apple tv a week ago.

Thank you for your help, although I am having trouble with the ssh section.
When I open up my terminal and
put in the information it will not allow me to type the password. No typing
appears.

This is what I am trying to do:

Open the Terminal window and type :

ssh frontrow@(my address)

the password is: frontrow

I cant type the password, my mac will not let me do it. How can I overcome
this?

1. Update yfour AppleTV to 3.01
2. Build a Patchstick using the atvusb-creator and the latest firmware (google:
download atv 3.01 dmg)
3. Reboot AppleTV with attached PatchStick and wait for success message
4. ssh to your apple tv (terminal: ssh frontrow@appletv.local ; password:
frontrow)
5. use cyberduck (or similar sftp tool) to copy the .run file from
http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/SoftwareMenu to your home directory
6. change owner rights to 755
7. execute .run file from terminal (terminal: SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run) and
follow the
output on terminal
8. to install XMBC / Boxee Launcher repeat the steps 5-7 with this file:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/858897/XBMC/Launcher-3.2.beta3-debug.run

Done

Hi. Sorry to keep beating this same horse, but I have the same
inaccessible "software menu" issue after successfully updating the ATV w/
patchstick. I am running Vista on the PC and 3.0.1 on the ATV. Not familiar
with
ssh. I don't know where to input frontrow password deal. Thanks for any help
on
this.

That's because you will need to enter the password frontrow to run an elevated
command. Use a different SSH program. I recommend Putty for a good Windows
console
program. See more on the SSH Guide here http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-
creator/wiki/atvWindowsGuide

I have copied both .run files (softwareMenu and launcher-1.2.3) to the apple tv
through ssh but I can't install/execute them in the Termialn window, or through
cyberduck/coda. I get the errors in the Terminal window:

-bash: softwareMenu-1.0b1.run: command not found

or

when I type "exec" befor the file name:

-bash: exec: softwareMenu-1.0b1.run: not found

Can someone please help me install/execute them! All help is apriciated!

I figured it out! I missed that you have to put a "/" in front of the .run file
in
the Terminal window.

For all others like me; I spent a lot of time with logging on to the ATV
because I
thought I couldn’t type the password because it was not showing. Slow as I am
it took
a while to realize that it was being typed in even dough it does not show in the
Terminal window.

Glad you got it working.

Showing the password, even when masked is a security risk, as it could reveal
the
length of the password.
