What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Update ATV with 3.0 Software

Does the Patchstick still work?

Comment 1 by mhall156, Oct 29, 2009
Upgraded to 3.0 this afternoon. It wiped out my patchstick menus. I reran the patchstick and it only loaded the
software menu but none of the menu items are accessible. I connected via SSH and all the files are there, just
not accessible.
Comment 2 by jerry.withers, Oct 29, 2009
Seems we will have to wait for a patchstick update. The Menu system has totally changed, so it does not surprise
me that nothing works.
Comment 3 by Sam.Nazarko, Oct 29, 2009
Hello,

I monitor the Apple TV update site myself so that I am aware when an update is out
and I can update the patchstick immediately. I have emailed Scott to inform him and
I will look into it.

If someone would like to try, please go ahead. With the Windows version you will
have to download the 3.0 version, not the 2.4 version, then select Choose DMG and
point the dialogue to the 3.0 image. This should work - but I am unsure of
application compatibility.

Comment 4 by jerry.withers, Oct 29, 2009
I am using a MAC with Snow Leopard here, what should i do to try?
Comment 5 by Sam.Nazarko, Oct 29, 2009
Interface has changed, but not by much. We've got a couple of font changes and some
new graphics, underlying core is still the same, so hopefully programs will be
affected minimally.

Jerry.Withers I don't recommend you do this, but as the core is the same, you would
just download the 3.0 image, and select it from Choose DMG.

Sorry for the long delay between replies.
Comment 6 by Sam.Nazarko, Oct 29, 2009
Sorry, I was a little vague wasn't I.

Download this image http://mesu.apple.com/data/OS/061-6795.20091029.Vbgtr/2Z694-5789-
067.dmg and save it somewhere. Then press Choose DMG in atv-usb and create a
patchstick.

Tell us if it works -- if it does I'll update the Windows version tommorow.
Comment 7 by jerry.withers, Oct 29, 2009
The link does not work.

Comment 8 by Sam.Nazarko, Oct 29, 2009
Sorry it broke off:

Comment 9 by 4jesse, Oct 29, 2009
I created a patchstick and updated my v3. I now have a new menu, but none of the
options work/go anywhere.
Comment 10 by jerry.withers, Oct 29, 2009
I am heading to Singapore on Saturday and will be bringing my ATV with me, so I will hold off on updating it for
now.
Comment 11 by 4jesse, Oct 29, 2009
Any idea how I can downgrade?
Comment 12 by andy.f...@arfore.com, Oct 29, 2009
I also created a patchstick using the v3 dmg.

1) SSH works as it should
2) The Software Menu option shows up in between TV Shows and Music
3) None of the option on Software Menu function
4) XBMC and Boxee don't show up anywhere

When I type uname -a I get the following "Darwin AppleTV.local 8.8.2 Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.2: Mon Jan
29 18:57:29 PST 2007; root:xnu-792.94.18~1/RELEASE_I386 i386 i386"

In /Users/frontrow there is a directory called Updates that contains a version.xml file. I have attached a copy
of the file.
version.xml

Comment 13 by srey0123, Oct 29, 2009
The uname output @12 is identical to what comes up on my OS 2.4 machine, for what
it's worth.
Comment 14 by Sam.Nazarko, Oct 30, 2009
Hey,

OK clearly our patchstick process works, such as the installation of SSH, BinUtils
but third party software like Launcher and SoftwareMenu do not support the new
firmware.

Comment 15 by dy...@mcdermond.org, Oct 30, 2009
I believe that it is only the frappliances that do not work. The frappliance structure has changed as it did when
2.0 came out. I think that any any added frameworks or QT plugins should be fine (such as Perian).
Comment 16 by dy...@mcdermond.org, Oct 30, 2009
In fact I can confirm that Perian codecs continue to work after patching with SSH and binutils under a clean 3.0
install.
Comment 18 by adolfth, Oct 30, 2009
Has anyone tried ATVFiles plugin after the upgrade?
Comment 19 by steve.s.buechler, Oct 30, 2009
I'm still at version 2.4. If I perform a Factory Restore at any point will my
AppleTV automatically be updated to version 3.0 or will it restore back to my
original version 2.4?
Comment 20 by kourkoulakos, Oct 30, 2009
Similar question. I just did a factory restore of my atv and got me back to 1.1! How do i go to 2.4 so I can use the
current version of the patchstick? Step by step instructions would be greatly appreciated as I am not afraid to
admit that I am a No0b :-p

Many thanks and any help appreciated,

DK
Comment 21 by jerndl, Oct 30, 2009
I did a factory restore and it loaded 2.3.1. I guess it depends on what version your
unit was shipped with. I got my refurb unit directly from Apple about 10 days ago. I
don't remember wat rev it was when I first booted up, but I did do an upgrade to 2.4
before using the patchstick. FYI even though I am on 2.3.1 I used the patchstick I
had created for 2.4 and it seems to work OK so far. All I am using is XBMC and so
far so good.

Jay
Comment 22 by steve.s.buechler, Oct 30, 2009
Yes you are right. I know mine was 2.4 when I purchased it. After the restore it
was 2.4. Thanks.
Comment 23 by mcasaretto, Oct 30, 2009
Any idea as to when a new patchstick will be ready? Mine upgraded to 3.0.
Comment 24 by maycreekrsjana, Oct 30, 2009
I downloaded the new firmware, created a new patchstick, ran it on the Atv and when I
rebooted, i still seem to have the 2.4 firmware. How could this happen?
Comment 25 by kourkoulakos, Oct 31, 2009
is there anyway to upgrade from 1.1 to 2.4? If i do the automatic update it will take me to 3.0.

thanks,
Comment 26 by Sam.Nazarko, Oct 31, 2009
Why not upgrade to 3.0, patchstick with SSH, which does work, and downgrade your FW
by downloading 2.4. See more on awkwardtv wiki.
Comment 27 by gdeze...@hotmail.com, Oct 31, 2009
Sam,

What you just said is brilliant. I'm trying it now, will post an update after.
This could be a temp solution for the problem

Because you've got a new version of SSH on you've got a new RSA key. Your ssh client
has not received the updated keys, thus thinks something is suspicious. Nothing is
suspicious because you know that you have a new installation of SSH.

Thanks guys!! Managed to roll-back to 2.4 and patched 2.4 again so everything is
back. All Apps are working including boxee. Won't get FTP working, but not sure
what's the reason for that.

What i did :

1) Upgrade to 3.0
2) Patch 3.0 using 067.dmg and ATVUSB
3) Delete host file in user/.ssh
3) Downgrade to 0.29dmg (v2.4), with use of OSupdate.
http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/OSupdate
4) Patch 2.4 the usual way
5) Update all the software Boxee XMBC

Really happy guys!! Thanks for your help especially Sam that came up with the smart plan.

Comment 33 by paul.de.meersman, Oct 31, 2009
I managed to run XMBC under 3.0.
After running the patchstick (created with firmware 2.4), I also lost the menu options.

I then copied via SFTP the MAC (Intel) version of XMBC. Then I mounted the dmg file
via ssh, and copied the application to the correct folder.

Because the application was still not accessible via the AppleTV, I adapted the boot
process so that XCMB automatically starts when powering on the AppleTV.

Only downside is the XCMB was reacting very slow to my remote controls (default
AppleTV remote and iPhone with XBMC remote. Also the news banner in XBMC was
scrolling slow and with interrupts.

I will retry this, because I also adapted a url in a info.plst file for the loader,
and I think that's the reason that it was so slow, before XCMB was running, but i did
kept seeing the AppleTV instead of XCMB. But my iPhone was able to access the
application and start MP3 albums to play, whiteout any interrupts. after adapting the
info.plst, I saw the XCMB menu, but it was slow as hell.

Because I just want to be able to play my more then 2500 MP3 albums who are on my
NAS, I satisfied if XCMB is running in the background whiteout any menu-interface
from the XCMB.

If we're finding Launcher and everything difficult to get going I could whip up a
temporary solution. It would be Windows only but it would be a script that:

Here we go:
1) "patchstick" the 3.0 ATV
2) ssh into it and download Launcher-3.2.alpha1-debug.run
3) install Launcher chmod +x Launcher.. ; ./Launcher-3.2...
4) install XBMC with Launcher or just re-symlink your old install (ln -
s /Users/frontrow/Applications/XBMC.app /Applications/XBMC.app)

Basically automates what is described in the thread Davilla linked to.

I'll see. It's only worthwhile if an update is far away. I doubt it is - considering
with a working launcher and maybe soon a working Software Menu all that will need
updating is atv-xbmc.7z and atv-xbmc-ssh.7z.
Comment 36 by brad.stancel, Oct 31, 2009
Okay, here is EXACTLY what you need to do to get XBMC running under the new ATV 3.0
upgrade. Unfortunately, this does NOT get Boxee, ATVFiles or any of our other
beloved plugins and apps working yet but at least it gets XBMC back up and running
normally with no changes to your existing XBMC setup.

1) Create a USB/"Patchstick" if you do not already have one. If you do not know how
to do this then you may find instructions here (http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/)

2) Unplug your ATV and once unplugged insert the USB/"Patchstick" into the USB slot
of the ATV. Plug the ATV back in and let it go through its boot sequence.

3) Once finished then unplug the ATV once again and remove your USB/"Patchstick".
Plug the ATV back in and let it reboot.

4) Once rebooted you will notice that the "Software Menu" has been inserted between
the "TV Shows" and "Music" menus but none of its options currently work. That is
being worked on and should be back up and running soon.

5) Download "Launcher-3.2.alpha1-debug.run" from
(http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/858897/XBMC/Launcher-3.2.alpha1-debug.run) and store it
to your hard drive temporarily. This is the revised (alpha) Launcher with the kudos
going to MaestroDD.

6) SSH into your ATV via your preference (Terminal/Putty/Cyberduck/etc.) and copy the
Launcher-3.2.alpha1-debug.run file from your hard drive to the
/mnt/Scratch/Users/frontrow directory of your ATV. This should be the default
directory that comes up.

7) Now, open your Terminal or Console program and type (or copy and paste) the following:

chmod +x Launcher-3.2.alpha1-debug.run; ./Launcher-3.2.alpha1-debug.run

Then press Enter/Return

8) You should get the following message:

Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing Launcher 3.2.alpha1-debug......
This installer must be run as root.

Please enter your password below to authorize as root.
In most cases, this password is "frontrow".
Password:

9) Enter the password, which should be "frontrow" (without quotations) unless you
have changed it and you should see this message:

== Removing old XBMCLauncher.frappliance
== Extracting XBMCLauncher.frappliance
XBMCLauncher.frappliance successfully installed.

Finder must be restarted in order to complete the installation.

Would you like to do this now? (Y/n)

10) Type Y for yes and press Enter/Return. Your ATV should then reboot and the
"Launcher" menu now appears between the "Movies" menu and the "TV Shows" menu.

11) Next, scroll over to the new Launcher menu and click "Downloads". A menu will
come up and choose the option to reinstall XBMC 9.04.1. Reinstall XBMC using this
option.

12) Once that is finished you will be able to run XBMC once again and all of your
previous settings should still be there and intact.

Hope this helps.

Comment 38 by stephan.diederich, Nov 01, 2009
brad,
I don't see why you posted that howto. The description in davilla's thread was kept short for a reason.

@all others,
please feel free to test the new Launcher version and post your results in the thread davilla linked.

To answer the original question. Patchstick still works, SoftwareMenu is broken and the author vanished, so it
might never be updated. A new, compatible Launcher will be ready, once we hear it's working.
closing.

I know why my xbmc is/was so slow. I added in the /Library/LaunchAgents/ 2 scripts to
launch automatically my xbmc. For an unknown reason, xbmc is launched but does not
respond well to user inputs. It's like another process is running on the background,
and uses all system resources
Comment 40 by stephan.diederich, Nov 01, 2009
paul,

Launcher is exactly written to solve the problems you see:
1) bring XBMC/Boxee in front of Finder
2) grab button presses from Finder and pass them to XBMC/Boxee

So the behaviour you see it by design ;)

cheers,
stephan
Comment 41 by PORSCHE6459, Nov 01, 2009
I followed the instructions exactly like Brad said and I got XBMC to work but Boxee does does not.
I updated Boxee but I get an error that it can't find the software.

Comment 42 by stephan.diederich, Nov 01, 2009
PORSCHE6459,
Boxee's installer doesn't work yet (as the logs clearly state). We're working on a solution.
Comment 43 by arg3ntinit0, Nov 01, 2009
Thanks guys you're all doing a great job. I hope there is a solution to Boxee soon :)

http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/NitoTV_Take_2

NitoTV now supports 3.0 :)
Comment 48 by ptro...@verizon.net, Nov 03, 2009
Hmmm, my Apple TV seems to be updating automatically. After the 3.0 update, I did a
factory restore which took me back to 1.1. I then upgraded to 3.0 (again), applied
the patchstick with the 3.0 dmg, then downgraded the OS to 2.4 using OS Update. I
then applied patchstick again with the 2.4 dmg. At that point I figured I would be
good, but my Apple TV became unstable, and would either freeze, or give an error
screen and restart pretty frequently when navigating the menus.

Boxee would not respond to the remote, even after deleting the UI properties file as
I found in the Boxee forums. I was able to enter my account information, but after
that, no navigation. Then, I watched a regular show on AppleTV and when it was
over, AppleTV automatically restarted and I was back on 3.0. Doh!

I assume there is some way to turn off the automatic update, but I didn't see it
anywhere. I hope boxee is worth it! My main goal is to get Netflix going on my
webTV.

I followed the instructions exactly like Brad said and I got

Comment 51 by steve.s.buechler, Nov 04, 2009
I'm curious to get folks take on the solution offered by ATVFlash. It seems like it
offers very similar functionality to the ATVUSB solution and is already compatible
with AppletV 3.0. Any thoughts?
Comment 52 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 04, 2009
We do not discuss commercial patchstick solutions here. We believe that we offer a
superior solution, starting with the fact that our work is free and open source. It
also receives recognition from the XBMC and Boxee development community. I believe
the product you mentioned uses the Launcher project to run Boxee&XBMC. Launcher is
developed for free by stephan.diederich and is integrated into atv-usb. Why would
you pay for the very same Launcher?

Work has begun on Launcher 3.2 to enable XBMC support, and if they are still using
Launcher to run XBMC and Boxee, then no they are not 100% 3.0 compatible, they would
then be using the alpha and beta builds that are being made. Therefore they are only
3.0 compatible after atv-usb is as the Launcher they use has not been developed.

I've never used said product, so I can't comment on it's functionality and how good
it is, but me personally, I've never had a problem with the free patchstick provided
on this site, which is why I decided to help out with the Windows version. The
developers of Launcher are also affiliated with this patchstick project, where as
said product is a third party. I know which one will be better at providing support
with Launcher.

Both Mac and Windows versions install SSH and BinUtils on the Apple TV successfully
still. The usr/pwd is still frontrow, frontrow. Unfortunately SoftwareMenu is not
compatible and the developer is not active in the community, therefore it is not
coming back to any patchstick.
Comment 53 by shadowjakal73, Nov 05, 2009
I ran the update to 3.0 and was unable to use XBMC, boxee etc. I followed Brad's
instructions using the launcher by sdavilla. For those out there getting errors,It
took me twice to do it, but now my xbmc works great as it did before, so don't get
discouraged. Remember if you new to ssh'ing in EVERY thing has to be exact or it
won't work properly.
Comment 54 by jonesthecode, Nov 06, 2009
Ditto above. I ran my existing (atvusb-creator) patchstick on my 3.0 AppleTV.

I then followed the SSH instructions at
http://www.appletvhacks.net/2009/11/03/apple-tv-3-0-nitotv-xbmc-boxee-and-others-now-working/#more-532.

I'm only interested in Boxee (for iPlayer mostly) It works a treat. Menu is far
easier to use, boxee and XBMC more tightly integrated. Go do it, it's dead easy!
Comment 55 by steve.s.buechler, Nov 06, 2009
I keep reading that the 2.4 patchstick still works, but that you then have to take
additional steps to make everything work properly and remove the non-working features
(not good the computer challenged). Will there be an update posted that takes care
of all the extra steps automatically and removes the incompatible portions? The
latest post in the Downloads section is still from August and is labeled with 2.4.
Being less technical, this would really, really be appreciated.
Comment 56 by jerry.withers, Nov 06, 2009
Sadly, without Couchsurfer working there is no way I can update to OS3. I need
CouchSurfer to get past the 24 hour sign-in screen that the wireless network in the
hotel I am staying at has.

Otherwise I would need to use an additional access point and router to get past it.

Comment 58 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 06, 2009
@Steve.S.Buecheler.

I know I haven't updated the windows release since early September. On the 31st work
was already underway and the adjustments made. I am now simply waiting for Launcher
to go out of beta before I incorporate it and it will be done. SoftwareMenu will be
removed, and the interface will be revamped for versions above 3.x (I will just
issue a standard update with 3.0)

jerry.withers: I am sorry that you can't update to 3.0. You will have to talk to the
dev about that. We only make the patchstick - it is Apple's firmware update that has
caused these problems.

I hope that's cleared some things up.
Comment 59 by HiTekAlex, Nov 06, 2009
@Sam - will you also update the Mac version?
Comment 60 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 06, 2009
@HiTekAlex

I have nothing to do with the Mac version. It's Davilla's department. I am sure he
will update it as a major firmware update has come out (3.0). He had not updated the
Mac version since last November, about a year, and the Windows version was not being
updated either. There was perfectly good reason for this: The process did not change
at all, all that needed to be updated was the DMG used. Rather than spend time
updating the download links in the apps, he created a Choose DMG button (for Mac) so
that all versions worked with future versions. I have improved the Windows version
by giving it a UI, the same Choose DMG, updating download links etc... The time
Davilla saves he puts into XBMC.

And that is a general roadmap of where we're going with the whole thing.

However, since it's 3.0 and the current solutions do not offer compatible versions
of Launcher, it will be updated. This will only happen when Launcher 3.2 is
finalised. We will always do our best to support the latest versions.
Comment 61 by steve.s.buechler, Nov 06, 2009
Sam Nazarko-

Just to close the loop on this. Here is the response from their Customer Service:

"Yes, the current version of aTV Flash (4.0) is fully compatible with
the current 3.0 AppleTV software. The XBMC/Boxee Launcher application
is included."

Comment 62 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 06, 2009
Firstly, the issues page is for issues with this product, not another. Please keep
that in mind.

If they are claiming to have full support then good on them. I was under the
impression they bundled in a copy o'Launcher. If this is the case then they have
XBMC support only at the moment and are using beta software in their final releases.

To be honest, I couldn't care less about their progress, I am more concerned about
our product, the free alternative that's just as good as any other patchstick out
there.

:)

Think it's a memory issue?

Not sure. Try rebooting aTV or restoring it.
Comment 69 by paultroon, Nov 07, 2009
Have you got the 10.4.9 combo installer dmg & recovery.dmg files in your ~/Documents folder on your ATV
when you try to patch 3?

I ended up having to do a factory restore then patching with a fresh install on a usb. I tend to do this for every
update - gets rid of any cruft - but not everyone has the time or patience to do this each time.

If you are running 3.0.1 then you need to run these commands (from
http://www.appletvhacks.net/2009/11/03/apple-tv-3-0-nitotv-xbmc-boxee-and-others-now-working/#more-532):

I absolutely agree that this free and open source version is better but when can we
expect a 3.0 release that addresses the apple tv 3.0 update?
Comment 74 by steve.s.buechler, Nov 10, 2009
I also want a 3.0 Patchstick download too, but I think they are having some
technical difficulties with certain aspects of the PatchStick Update including some
developers who have left the project.
Comment 75 by sdavilla, Nov 10, 2009
Don't spread rumors, no developers have left the project. A new patchstick distro is pending and will get
released when it's done and not before.
Comment 76 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 10, 2009
steve.s.buechler. You are talking rubbish here. We've not lost any devs, infact we
gained one in August (me). The patchstick process is absolutely fine. It's the same
as before, we just need to update a couple of files. We haven't done that yet
because we are not out of beta with Launcher yet.

I am curious as to why you think we have project issues.
Comment 77 by jerry.withers, Nov 10, 2009
I remeber reading that the developer for Software Menu has left the community. Is
that not true?

With NitoTV working I can let Software Menu go, but I can not patch to 3.0 without
Couchsurfer or something similiar working.
Comment 78 by sdavilla, Nov 10, 2009
TomCool (Software Menu author) was seen recently on irc and was working on 3.x fixes.
Comment 79 by jerry.withers, Nov 10, 2009
Well that is great!

Now all I need is a CouchSurfer miracle and I am in the clear.
Comment 80 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 10, 2009
He was inactive for a while, but even so, SoftMenu dev does not work on the
patchstick. We just integrated his work.
Comment 81 by sonny.benshimon, Nov 11, 2009
can someone post a direct link to the 3.0.1 update from the apple site? I tried to use
the atv-win version to patch my 3.0 ATV today, but the link to the dmg file of FW 3.0
is no longer available.

Thanks.
Comment 82 by sonny.benshimon, Nov 11, 2009
Sorry everyone. Continued digging and found a direct link to the the 3.0.1 FW in the
AkwardTV wiki.

Here is a direct link to everyone else that may look for
it:http://mesu.apple.com/data/OS/061-7491.20091107.TVA31/2Z694-6004-003.dmg

And while I'm adding a comment, THANKS to the developers of this wonderful patchstick
solution!

Comment 83 by davidhildreth, Nov 13, 2009
Looks like Launcher 3.2 was released. Looking forward to a new patchstick.
Comment 84 by vimota, Nov 13, 2009
That's great! Having a patchstick for the 3.0 Apple tv is going to make things a lot
easier!

Just created a new patchstick based on the instructions / 3.0 image file:
http://mesu.apple.com/data/OS/061-7491.20091107.TVA31/2Z694-6004-003.dmg. the stick
created A-OK, but after uploading to the ATV, I see the software menu option,
complete sub menus: 3rd party plugs/manage built in scripts/Restart Finder &
Settings, but same as B4, none of the sub menus work.

Sorry, I forgot to complete the last post

& I don't see anything about Boxee or XBMC eventhough I saw XBMC loading during the
ATV flash.
Comment 87 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 14, 2009
It is necessary to update your Launcher installation.
Comment 88 by TheNyls, Nov 22, 2009
You can fix it by going to the Software Menu web link directly (http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/SoftwareMenu)
and manually installing his new program, which for some reason is not included in the patch stick. It will add a
bunch more options and all the menu items will start to work again. DONT DOWNLOAD THE ATV LOADER until
they fix it. I just crashed my ATV with it.
Comment 89 by billyxx, Nov 22, 2009
I made my first ever Patchstick last night, with the latest ATV.dmg, 3.0.1, and the Launcher update as
described here in other posts.
Everything went OK, Boxee, and XBMC installed no problem, except the Software menu>sub menus. None of
them worked.
Can someone please explain to a novice, how I manually install the program from
(http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/SoftwareMenu)?
I am running 10.6.2

Thanks
Comment 90 by jerry.withers, Nov 22, 2009
I updated Software Menu within using its own update option and not the menu has
disappeared. I tried using the script via SSH that the author suggests but still no
luck getting it back. BTW, this is still under 2.4 as I am not able to yet upgrade to
3.01.

Seems version 0.90 might be the last that works with 2.4.

Comment 91 by kee123, Nov 22, 2009
I cannot seem to get this to download on my USB. Have tried 2 different USB and reformatted using different
scenarios. Any advice as exactly how to make this on my USB?
Thanks,
Ken
Comment 92 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 22, 2009
SoftwareMenu is a third party tool therefore I can't help you with it much. However,
as the current version does not run on 3.0 it is impossible to update it because the
updater doesn't work properly.

You should delete your current SoftwareMenu and SSH in and install the latest
version which is confirmed to work.

Or you can wait for our patchstick to be updated.
Comment 93 by jerry.withers, Nov 23, 2009
I am using ATV OS 2.4 and can not get Software menu back. I was able to copy it via
SSH to the ATV, but I can not move it over to the System directory where it needs to
go.

I tried the "Sudo -s mount -uw" (or something along those lines, but can not get
write authorization to put it where it needs to go.
Comment 94 by zguerinoni, Nov 24, 2009
I can't seem to find the 3.0 dmg all the links go to apple with an unable to find link. Does anyone know where to
get the file from?
Comment 95 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 24, 2009
Apple periodically remove links to old firmwares, the latest firmware is all that
remains (aka 3.0.1).

Here's a link to latest fw for you: http://mesu.apple.com/data/OS/061-
7491.20091107.TVA31/2Z694-6004-003.dmg

Comment 96 by Sam.Nazarko, Nov 24, 2009
The link has broken off. Copy and paste it don't click it.
Comment 97 by muppetlabs.co.uk, Nov 24, 2009
I managed to download the 3.0.1 dmg from
http://mesu.apple.com/data/OS/061-7491.20091107.TVA31/2Z694-6004-003.dmg few minutes
ago.

I *think* the link to the latest version is contained in the
http://mesu.apple.com/version.xml file. It seems to be...
Comment 98 by zguerinoni, Nov 24, 2009
Thanks guys for help locating that. Last night every time I would get to the apple
website I would get a message saying the file could not be found. I appreciate the
help, now off to ssh into atv for the 1st time. Hopefully it is as easy as Boxee
makes it sound.

"please please please, i for some reason used patchstick.ca to patchstick my atv but
want to revert back to my atv-usb-creator."
The only way I got back from the same place was to revert to factory settings, and then upgrade to 3.0.1 and
then run atv-usb creator. Yes, it took a while. To revert to factory settings, hold the menu and down arrow keys
until the light on the unit turns orange. You will be asked to pick a language, and then a screen with three
choices, one of which is revert to factory settings (or something similar)
Comment 101 by Sam.Nazarko, Dec 03, 2009
Hey,

To clean up your aTV just go to Settings > Restore. Now your back to factory
settings.

Then use our patchstick software to get Launcher and SSH.
Comment 102 by timcrawf, Dec 04, 2009
Thanks, that is much easier then my instructions :-)

What is the status of getting Coach Surfer to work again in the next patch stick
release?
Comment 106 by Sam.Nazarko, Dec 13, 2009
Didn't you ask this before? Couch Surfer is third party software. It is not
affiliated with atv-usb in any way. It is an atvflash product and for general
information on it see:

http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Couch_Surfer

It will probably require an update to make it 3.0 compliant, however installing
NitoTV and loading it through that is always worth a shot. I say do it this way
because atvFlash are intentionally limiting in their distribution of Couch Surfer.
Comment 107 by jerry.withers, Dec 13, 2009
Yes, i did mention that because of the wireless network I have here, I need Couch
Surfer to access the Terms of Agreement page to access the net. Without it, I would
have to set up my own sub net and that is just too much.

I tried viu NitoTV, and that does no good. All NitoTV does is state that support for
AppleTV OS 3.x has been droppped.

Looks like I may have to bite the bullet and get ATV Flash.

Sadly, all I really need is USB support, NitoTV, Software menu and Couch Surfer. I
really never used Boxeee or XMBC

I did this:
sudo mount -uw /
cd /users/frontrow/
wget http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/858897/XBMC/Launcher-3.2.beta3-debug.run
chmod +x Launcher-3.2.beta3-debug.run
./Launcher-3.2.beta3-debug.run

and I get this error:
./Launcher-3.2.beta3-debug.run: line 1: Deprecated: command not found

Any help?
Thanks in advance.

But
Comment 109 by Sam.Nazarko, Dec 14, 2009
Run sudo -s
Comment 110 by sdavilla, Dec 14, 2009
That link (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/858897/XBMC/Launcher-3.2.beta3-debug.run) is expired, read what it
downloaded :)

Use http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/files/Launcher-3.2.1-debug.run

And everyone else, pay attention, this is about the tenth time I've had to correct this mistake.
Comment 111 by Sam.Nazarko, Dec 15, 2009
Hehe. So you are right Scott. I woke up at 7 and this was the first thing I replied
to in my bleary-eyed state. The 3.2 beta 3 was updated to 3.2.1 and taken as final.

Not only will you have to correct the link but also all references to it as they
will have the wrong filename. Quick find and replace - pretty lazy right :) has
allowed me to do this for you:

sudo mount -uw /
cd /users/frontrow/
wget http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/files/Launcher-3.2.1-debug.run
chmod +x Launcher-3.2.1-debug.run
./Launcher-3.2.1-debug.run

Just thought I'd add: Windows users won't have to wait long though the patchstick
project has been finished for about a week and I'm just looking over it aswell as
preparing some thorough documentation so that people are happy.
Comment 112 by nickstock, Dec 27, 2009

Comment 113 by Sam.Nazarko, Dec 27, 2009

Comment 114 by nickstock, Dec 27, 2009

excellent work! Cheers, Nick
Comment 115 by Sam.Nazarko, Dec 27, 2009
Hey,

Glad it worked for you. The latest Windows version of the patchstick creator will
install the latest Launcher bundle for you.
Comment 116 by Sq.Diddy, Dec 29, 2009
Firstly, I want to thank you guys for creating an excellent open source project with
fantastic tech support, i read issue 411 from start to finish....I just got an apple tv
and was going to return it because of the restrictions on it until i did some research
and saw i can put boxee on it (and streaming content from my comp) using this
patchstick.

I have a mac OSX 10.5.8 and a new atv with v 3.x on it...wanted to know when i can
download the fully new patchstick

thanks again for the project and the support
Comment 117 by Sam.Nazarko, Dec 29, 2009
Thanks for the thanks :)

The Mac version has not been updated yet, only the Windows version. You can however
get 3.x working with the Mac version.

What you would need to do is download the 3.0.1 firmware file (search for a link
they're plastered over this issues tracker) and then select it from the Choose DMG
feature of atvusb-creator.

You then update Launcher (the frappliance that lets you run Boxee and XBMC) with the
following commands in Terminal (via SSH)

sudo mount -uw /
cd /users/frontrow/
wget http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/files/Launcher-3.2.1-debug.run
chmod +x Launcher-3.2.1-debug.run
./Launcher-3.2.1-debug.run

Hope this helps you out :)
Comment 118 by BBender716, Dec 29, 2009
Ok, stupid question for a terminal n00b...

I patchsticked using the latest firmware dmg and need to update the launcher via
mac. So I attempted the terminal commands that Sam posted, but then I'm asked for
a password following:

"We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
    #2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility."

What is this password? It's not the same as my account password correct? I read
something about an admin password and a root password. What's the difference and
how do I set the one that I need to proceed with this command prompt? Thanks
ahead of time!
Comment 119 by Sam.Nazarko, Dec 29, 2009
The password is frontrow. The same one you logged in with. Run sudo -s before
running them commands and enter frontrow, that way the commands can then just run
without any UI interruption.

Assistance requested on actually booting up the ATV with the patchstick: what should
I see to verify that the patch actually worked? I have prepared the usb patchstick
using atvusb-creator (on a Mac, using the 2Z694-6004-003.dmg image). The ATV
recognizes the flash and boots it; at least I assume that is the case, because I
wind up witht the screen that offers 3 choices (restart, diags, restore to factory
defaults). I never see anything on the screen that suggests that ssh is being enabled.
What should I expect to see before power down the ATV? Thanks.
Comment 123 by Sam.Nazarko, Jan 05, 2010
Hey,

You should be seeing the penguin as soon as atvbootloader starts up followed by some
text as patchstick.sh is run. You will then see a message giving you your default
user/pass for SSH and telling you it worked.

If it worked -- you will know. It's not something that is hard to tell.

You are seeing the recovery screen because either you have held Menu and - or the
USB was not booted successfully (this screen doesn't show if the boot from USB is
successful). You should also have the extra menus (if you chose to install them)

I know I am late to the party, but I am trying to find the DMG for 2.3.1. Th Apple site seems to have wiped them
out and all the links are bad. Does anyone have the patchstick dmg for 2.3.1?
Comment 129 by Sam.Nazarko, Jan 10, 2010
I am a little concerned at giving you a direct link, however if you go to the
awkwardtv wiki and look for the article on AppleTV OS 2.3.1 you will find the
filename and MD5 checksum. Googling this filename should return a torrent or
something fairly quickly, and you can use the MD5 to check the file is valid.
Comment 130 by jcc.montana, Jan 14, 2010
I just got an Apple TV and am new to all this--I've got everything to work except when I click on Boxee from
the Launcher I get...

Error: Cannot launch XBMC/Boxee from path
applications/boxee.app/contents/macos/boxee

Thanks,

John

Comment 131 by jerry.withers, Jan 14, 2010
You need to actually download Boxee and XBMC via the DOWNLOAD menu math in Launcher
first. The patchstick only installs the files to enable the install.
Comment 132 by Sam.Nazarko, Jan 14, 2010
Spot on Jerry. It's up to the user to decide what media centers they wish to
download.
Comment 133 by PORSCHE6459, Jan 16, 2010
I've been having a lot of problems with 3.0.1. It looses the network constantly and weird things happen. I have it
streaming my media and photos and sometimes the photos are there and sometimes not.
Is there an easy way to downgrade to ver. 3.0.
I didn't have any problems with it.
Comment 134 by Sam.Nazarko, Jan 17, 2010
Have a look at downgrade with OsUpdate (http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/OSupdate) --
you will need to "acquire" the 3.0 image.
Comment 135 by ki...@mac.com, Feb 06 (3 days ago)
Got it working on ATV 3.0.1 (didn't see this posted with updates links)

1) “patchstick” the 3.0 ATV (You should just use your old patchstick you used previously on the ATV )

2) ssh into it the ATV and download 3.2 Launcher

Go to your ATV-Settings-Network and find your ATV IP address.
Type (in Terminal):
ssh frontrow@your ATV ip address
Type:
frontrow
Type:
yes

Type (in Terminal):
wget http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/files/Launcher-3.2.2-debug.run

3) Install the Launcher
Type:
chmod +x Launcher-3.2.2-debug.run

Type :
./Launcher-3.2.2-debug.run

Enter the appropriate password “frontrow“ and answer “Y” when it asks to restart the finder.

4) From your ATV Menu> Launcher > Downloads, install Boxee alpha 0.9.14.6992.

Note: Please do not select the Launcher 3.1

5) Launch Boxee from ATV Menu>Launcher>Downloads>Boxee .
