Build your own Pirate's Coffin

Welcome to the "How To Build Your Own Coffin" (for Quad transportation purposes!)

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb24.jpg http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb23.jpg

As I like to go to the flying field on my motorbike, to take the AP Quad with me I need to make a new APC (Ardu Pirate Coffin), the idea is to carry the Quad in a very safe way, in a BACKPACK COFFIN!.

I know you can design your Quad to have folding arms thus reducing it's size, but what I wanted to have is a Coffin that enables me to "take it out of the box and fly", no waisting time unfolding arms, mounting props, or whatever you did to reduce transportation size.

As there will be lots of spare room in the coffin, it will take the transmitter, batteries, props, and maybe even the charger!.

This coffin is designed to fit my Quad wich is pretty much built to standars:

Distance between motors 38cm

Center housing is a CD box

List of Materials

2 sheets of DM (wood) 4mm thick 500x320mm

3 sheets of blue foam 50mm thick 500x650mm

2 sheets of blue foam 20mm thick 500x650mm

2 wood strips 1m long x 10x20mm

1.5 sheet of black cardboard foam 3mm thick 1200x800mm (it is 3mm depron with cardboard on both sides)

2 turnigy transmitter belts or some kind of belt (for backpack mounting)

4 round screw bolts

4 small muskets

50mm width Fibre reinforced tape

50mm width Clear tape

Spray glue

All these components are only orientative, as you may not find the exact match at your location, feel free to use similar materials.

The inside of the coffin will be filled with the 3 layers of 50mm foam, and 2 20mm, cutting the necessary shapes in it to fit the Quad and the radio transmitter (and other items to come). http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/layers0.jpg http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/layers.jpg http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb00.jpg

Building

Stack the two wooden sheets, and cut the corners (You can also make your box square if you want it simplier, but as I don't like square corners...)

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb03.jpg

Join the two wooden sheets with stapples

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb04.jpg

Add wood strips reinforcements with some screws

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb05.jpg http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb06.jpg

At first I tried to cut the foam using a hot wire, but finally I used a standar cutter

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb08.jpg http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb09.jpg

Cut the three layers of foam with each shape, you cand download the files a the bottom of the page, you can use the wood shape, and just place it over the foam and cut.

Make room in the foam for the wood reinforcements

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb10.jpg

Check if it fits, and repeat previous step until it does

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb11.jpg

Now we use the assembled wood base to cut the cardboard foam to size, cut 2, you will need the other one for the cover

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb12.jpg

And we glue it to the wood using spray glue

Next step is to cut the 20cm hight laterals and place them using clear tape.

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb13.jpg http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb14.jpg

Once all sides are in place, we roll them with clear tape, plus a another strip of fibre tape for the upper edge

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb15.jpg

Next we tape the bottom part

Now we drill 5mm holes (or whatever the size of your screws is) and place the 4 round screw bolts in place

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb17.jpg http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb16.jpg

Foam Layer 1 in place

Foam Layer 2 in place

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb19.jpg

Foam Layer 3 in place

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb20.jpg

Quad in place, plus some refilling 20mm foam pieces

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb21.jpg

We also glue the other 20mm foam sheet to the cover cardboard, you can see on the left of the picture

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb22.jpg

link the transmitter belts with musket to the bolts

http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb23.jpg http://www.danisaez.com/ardupirates/cofin/aptb25.jpg

Add some logo or design to your liking to the cover cardboard and apply clear tape to it; and use 4 strips of velcro to fix the coffin cover and you're done.

Enjoy!! if you need anymore information or different formats, please ask!

Just tested the Coffin! going to the flying field (15km), you can go at 120kmh without any problem. Over 150kmh, the Coffin starts to wobble a bit, but not much.
