About AnkiDroid

AnkiDroid is the free, open source version of Anki for Android.

Like Anki, AnkiDroid is a program which makes remembering things easy. Because it is a lot more efficient than traditional study methods, you can either greatly decrease your time spent studying, or greatly increase the amount you learn.

Anyone who needs to remember things in their daily life can benefit from Anki and AnkiDroid. For example:

  • learning a language
  • studying for medical and law exams
  • memorizing people's names and faces
  • brushing up on geography
  • mastering long poems
  • even practicing guitar chords!

And now, on the go!

Features

  • Same Spaced Repetition algorithm as Anki.
  • Use your Anki decks, moving them first to an SD card.
  • Sample deck for countries/capitals.
  • Reads cards that are either plain text, HTML-based, sounds.
  • Card editor.
  • Directly opens last time's deck.
  • Timer from the start of a card to the time you answer.
  • "Whiteboard" toggle that allows you to draw on top of the card.
  • Preferences dialog, including the option to hide the whiteboard and timer.
  • Suspend a card
  • Understands font sizes and colors

I installed Anki Droid on my Motorola Android phone. A blue light flashes in the corner of my phone when I go into sleep mode -- no other app does this, and I can't find a tool in the preferences to turn it off. Ideas?

Comment by PenniPa...@gmail.com, Apr 16, 2011

This is really fantastic! Thanks so much for you work. It really helps me as a student. Could you look into building some tablet/honeycomb support? I'd really appreciate it.

Hi, I have downloaded Ankidroid yesterday on HTC Wildfire. I managed to download three decks and I have received an error message and forced quit the application. I am not able to view or download shared decks. Please could you help. Also is there a limit of decks I can download and how much of my internet allowance the application uses?

Thanks

Comment by project member fle...@gmail.com, May 20, 2011

annju: For these type of questions, the mailing list is the best place to get an answer. http://groups.google.com/group/anki-android

There is no limit in AnkiDroid? to the number of decks you can download. The about of internet allowance used by AnkiDroid? depends on the number of size of decks you decide to download and sync.

Can I study a deck "HANDS FREE"? I like to review my decks while exercising (sweaty hands, etc, so i don't want to TOUCH my screen). Just in review mode, random display, question for x seconds, answer for y seconds).

Thanks

Comment by mikemorr.com, Sep 3, 2011

Hi Fred,

AnkiDroid has a setting to automatically display the answer after showing the question for x seconds (under Preferences/Other), but it currently won't display the next question automatically; you still have to answer Again, Good, Easy, etc. It's an interesting idea, though. Since you wouldn't be giving each card a difficulty score, I think it would have to be part of a "learn mode" or "free study mode" as described in http://code.google.com/p/ankidroid/issues/detail?id=732

The software won't function on my Nexus S because it doesn't have external storage. However, there's no reason why I shouldn't just be able to use internal storage for my decks...

Hi, I'm using Anki for a Koine Greek class. I got the deck into the software successfully but the Greek font doesn't appear correctly on the phone app. My phone is Galaxy Ace. How can I get the phone app to show all the Greek letters?

I have an excel sheet with nearly a thousand words and their corresponding definitions that I want to enter into AnkiDroid? Is there a faster way to do this than copying and pasting?

Comment by booze...@gmail.com, Oct 6, 2011

@ timothy, even i have the same problem.i have excel file with words , if you find a way please let me know !

Comment by project member NorbertNagold@gmail.com, Oct 6, 2011

@timothy, booze: this is very easy: save your table as csv, use ";" as separator. Install anki (http://ankisrs.net), create a new deck, import your csv-file. Copy your deck to your sd-card or use the syncing feature.

Cheer!

Norbert

I have a Samsung Galaxy S (Samsung Epic). When I was preparing to download the AnkiDroid? app I noticed that the requirements said "Modify or Delete SD Card contents."

Can someone please help.....Will this download delete all of my information already on my SD card?

(my sd card has 1gig of FREE space left even with all of my documents saved on it)

Thanks!

Hi there, just downloaded ankidroid - can we use pictures and/or video in our cards? I didn't see a way to add these to a card - thanks!

Comment by bumba...@gmail.com, Oct 18, 2011

Can you use anki in the reverse mode like: first it shows you the pinyin and than the meaning and the characters? so you should recognise the (voice possibly) and write the characters....a dictation mode.

Thank you all !

This app has been fantastic for learning Korean. I was looking for a flashcard app and I was thinking about all the things it should have, AnkiDroid? has all of it! Thanks so much!

Comment by vassili....@gmail.com, Dec 5, 2011

Is it possible to make the color of cards black and of fonts white?

Comment by larryw1...@gmail.com, Dec 29, 2011

Vassili said:

After selecting a deck in AnkiDroid?, touch the "NightMode?" checkbox in the lower left corner to reverse the card colors (black background and white characters)

Comment by larryw1...@gmail.com, Dec 29, 2011

Will AnkiDroid? ever support Japanese furigana (small hiragana characters over the associated kanji) like desktop Anki currently does?

Comment by rene.sch...@gmail.com, Jan 15, 2012

I really like the app.

Feature request: When the phone is in "silent mode" and "text to speech" is enabled in Ankidroid, NO sound should be played.

Comment by zso...@gmail.com, Jan 21, 2012

use ankidroid on my transformer prime, it prompted me to download a beta version so i did, however once i was in a deck i couldn't get back out of it, had to delete app and reinstall

thank you for all your hard work!!

Comment by roysam.s...@gmail.com, Feb 5, 2012

Feature request: Please add feature to import cards from text files / csv files present on the phone storage, rather than having to import cards only through the ".anki" format. This adds a lot more flexibility to the app. I've noticed that the app, "iFlashCards" has this option, and I find it invaluable.

Thanks for the great app. It's got so many features already!

Comment by roysam.s...@gmail.com, Feb 5, 2012

Feature request: Please allow editing of cards and deletion of cards within a deck, on the phone itself. This is a very important feature in my opinion.

Comment by roysam.s...@gmail.com, Feb 5, 2012

Feature request: Please allow exporting of cards in text format, csv or Tab separated text file.

Comment by alexchan...@gmail.com, Mar 7, 2012

Will Ankidroid offer colour for flashcards? The flashcards I formatted on the desktop version do not show up with colours on Ankidroid.

Comment by russellm...@gmail.com, May 4, 2012

Using my Samsung Nexus, when I download an online deck from my account, the app crashes.

Comment by william....@gmail.com, May 4, 2012

The download bug in 4.0 is rendering this application useless for me. It crashes every time I try to download a personal deck.

Comment by ngohaanh...@gmail.com, May 8, 2012

I installed it to my android arco 2.3, but i can't connect it to internet although other apps have no problem with internet connection

Comment by metal...@gmail.com, May 26 (2 days ago)

It would be nice if we can sync to our custom online repository instead of using AnkiOnline?.
