Update 12.26.08:
AndroidChat is successfully running on Android version 1.0! After a few days of ironing out the errors preventing the apk from running on phones I'm pleased to announce that you can use AndroidChat on your G1! Please note that this is a development version of the application. It is not feature complete and certainly can have its fair share of bugs. Development is continuing on the application with new features and updates posted regularly. If you find any bugs while using AndroidChat, help us help you by filling out a bug report on our issues page. Thanks and enjoy! Any questions feel free to send an email!
AndroidChat is a free and open source application, and will remain so forever!
Update 12.23.08:
AndroidChat is in the process of being updated for Android version 1.0, this is the version that shipped with the T-Mobile G1. More updates and a beta apk will be posted here shortly.
Thanks!
AndroidChat is a location aware chat client (and server, but more on that later) for the Android Platform designed to compete in the Android Developers Challenge
More technically, the project consists of modifications to the inspircd irc daemon to support location-awareness services, and a client for Google's Android platform which supports location based channel matching.
Probably one of the first things you should do before actually running the client is read the manual. I intend to shift the manual into the wiki, but for now it's available as a download in PDF format.
While we didn't win round one of the ADC, we did pretty darn well! Here are our results:
AndroidChat
- Effective use: In the 25th to 50th percentile of all submitted applications
- Polish: In the top 25% of all submitted applications
- Indispensability: In the top 25% of all submitted applications
- Originality: In the 50th to 75th percentile of all submitted applications
Overall: In the 25th to 50th percentile of all submitted applications
We look forward to ADC-2!
