If you give us the ability to save to SD card, widgets should also work from there. Otherwise, the feature is kind of useless isn't it? Please fix! Thank you.

This is a huge problem, we just enabled moving our app to the SD card and now all our users are complaining that they can't access the widgets, and of course they think it's our bug.
I can't understand why you consider this a medium priority problem, this is a major issue for any app that has widgets, which is quite a few. Please elevate the priority and fix ASAP.

As Google promotes 'widgets' and SD app-operation as two of Android's big differentiators, the inability for them to work together undercuts your marketing pitch...doesn't it?
ti...@googlemail.com <ti...@googlemail.com> #8
I agree this is a major issue. As amazing as my Desire is, it contains very small internal memory. Too many issues like this and I have to start picking and chosing between which apps I keep installed which seems crazy when I have a 16gb SD card sat there!
ju...@gmail.com <ju...@gmail.com> #9
It's problems likE this that make me think twice about how good android is, this is simply pathetic.I spend way too much time resolving issues like this because google can't be bothered to properly test it's software.as much as I love my desire I way prefer the slick interface aple has to offer.
ci...@gmail.com <ci...@gmail.com> #10
This is big issue, just as all the memory problems of Android OS, we have a big market with thousand of apps and I've bought so many but if my phone it can't afford and I have to delete some of the bought ones 'cause there's no space left in the phone.
I have an almost brand new htc desire with froyo 16gb of microsd and when I try to install something new the phone always said to me there is no memory on the phone.
The mixzing people finally gave us the move2sd option but the widget doesn't work if the app is moved on external memory.
Some other "fruit-phones" hasn't memory problems but if you google folks have in mind do attach its predominance you must a better way to handle memory in your os!
Obviously since I have no space on the phone I don't buy apps on the market anymore!
Sorry for my bad English but I hope that the concepts are clear...

Dear Google, Please fix the problem with widgets disappearing after moving apps to the sdcard. For example, I am unable to use my music widget otherwise, and it makes no sense to keep such a large app as music on my phone's memory. Indeed so few apps allow moving to sdcard, some of which I'm sure is due to the lack of proper widget support, that I am doubting whether I should bother to get a bigger card than the 16GB I already use.

I just now tested this on an AVD version 2.3 (Gingerbread) and can confirm this is still an issue. Any app with a widget shouldn't allow moving to the SD card until this issue is resolved. The users will come thinking it's your fault, not google's. Anybody here know if google has an official stance?
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #35
No comment by Google at all. We are pursuing that course in our app, not enabling moving to SD card until this is fixed, letting our users know that it's Google's responsibility, and pointing them to this issue so they can star it. Hard to understand why it wasn't fixed in 2.3, it seems like a high user impact, and clearly very pervasive.
ze...@gmail.com <ze...@gmail.com> #36
The problem with this is that users will relentlessly downvote applications and leave negative comments when moving to SD card isn't an option. Even a popup when moving to SD card that says "this will disable your widgets" would be a step in the right direction, though allowing widgets from SD card would be ideal--especially given the limited internal memory available to applications on pretty much all devices.
ub...@gmail.com <ub...@gmail.com> #37
I asked reddit and they delivered this:
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/install-location.html#ShouldNot
"App Widgets - Your App Widget will be removed from the home screen. When external storage is remounted, your App Widget will not be available for the user to select until the system resets the home application (usually not until a system reboot). [..] If your application uses any of the features listed above, you should not allow your application to install on external storage"
Considering google documented this - I'm guessing they'll never fix it. Though I still don't agree with google's excuse for this behavior.

Yet another fatal flaw on Android. I won't be recommending android phones until this as well is fixed. How hard is it to refresh the widget list from apps on an sd card? Get to it!
cr...@gmail.com <cr...@gmail.com> #39
I've also experienced this issue with several applications and just now sourced the issue. As long as android phones are predominately SD-card oriented for storage (with small built in memory) this is a killer for users. It is hard enough as it is to keep enough space on the device to fill my SD card even partially with applications. And now I know when I do have them on the SD card, their functionality is impacted not just in performance but also features, through no fault of the developers.
This is my second issue with android, after the text messaging bug. I like android, and hate to bring it bad press, but it seems that is the only way to start getting action on these issues. You also need to make sure these updates can be pushed to devices not running stock android (sense, blur, etc.)

tr...@gmail.com <tr...@gmail.com> #40
Fully agree with the comments above. I've recently moved to an Android phone, and am impressed with the available apps. Having widgets on screen makes things more accessible, but also nicer. They give the OS the 'bling' that it needs to be taken seriously. Having now discovered that there is currently no work around to get widgets working for apps that are moved to the SD card does take a lot of the shine off the OS. I have plenty of storage on SD [as everyone does], but have to install apps to phone memory if I want to use widgets - not good given the extremely limited memory on phone. I would like to see this issue escalated - I'm happy with all other aspects of my Android phone.
ci...@gmail.com <ci...@gmail.com> #41
The solution is, as always, a custom rom. With the official stuff we have only problems. I've bought many apps on the market and on my "sense" phone there no space to have on it! The move2sd is a great swindle 'cause it move a few bytes on the huge (almost useless) microsd. BTW Android on many phones is quite a mess with a ridiculous amount of "phone memory".

I currently have three android phones and due to the surmounting issues with bugs like this I will absolutely not be recommending any android based phones to anyone. It was great at first but over time has proven to be unstable and under supported. Google should seriously take into consideration that we the users are what keeps their company in business. This is yet another huge slap in the face to everyone who depends on their devices on a daily basis. I will be moving to a different os after this. Thanks Google, you have once again proven that when a company becomes to large it completely forgets abouts the driving force behind that growth. The users.

I believe the problem lies with the internal memory not communicating with the external memory within the OS And not being able to update changes live
As far as what I read this problem is not addressed in 2.3 or 3.0
As far as I know google doesn't even know that the problem even exists and trying to contact someone for support is almost nearly impossible. They rather have U contact your phone manufacture rather than them. Android really needs to communicate with the Developers a whole lot better.
The only sites I found is Open Handset Alliance or evenandroid.com but still there's no one to contact, but at least this site seems to be a good start

I am utterly dumbfounded that google consider this a 'medium priority issue'.
Moving apps2SD is a crucial step in utilizing the tiny amount of internal storage space (provided with most smartphones) as best we can. If this 'medium priority issue' was resolved I would have an extra 62MB internal storage space to use as opposed to having to choose which app I need to drop from the phone. Clearly from reading the above, I am far from alone on this issue so a long overdue fix would be greatly appreciated.

Second most of the comments here. This should be one of the highest priority issues - not because I need it fixed but because, as someone else pointed out, two of the biggest differentiators between Android and the fruity company's offering are widgets and the ability to manage external storage. If these clash with each other and no fix is proposed, that's a huge hole in Android's credibility.

This is "slow but useful" vs. "slick but useless".
If you seriously consider what has been reported here as a FEATURE, then I want my money back, I simply did NOT choose to PURCHASE something like this.
Really, it sucks that bad. I have never in my sane mind expect that in today's modern years I'd get a seemingly smarter phone yet don't really have the choice to install the application I have PURCHASED onto an SD card which I have also PURCHASED.
This is NOT supposed to be a DUMBphone.
What's the use of this PLATFORM and even the MARKET, when we as CONSUMERS can't even install just a handful of essential applications that renders useless because of this widget-related DEFECT.
DO THE MATHS. How could the market thrive if application installations work this way?

Has google even acknowledged this seems like a rather big problem considering both the move 2 sd and widgets are so heavily touted features I mean google brags how great widgets are and how they increase functionality especially for big complex programs then touted how great it was to be able to move apps to your sd card because now you have all the space you need to install big feature rich apps...
They fail to tell you that the giant feature rich apps that have widgets and the most functionality and as such would gain the most from move to sd are the very apps that can't use the function!!
I understand why they don't make it readily known because heck I would have gone iphone if I would have known as it makes the very best apps basicly pointless if I wanted to have to click an icon to use a program's common features I could have just gone apple!
Rather google tricked me by hiding it! Letting me think I was going to get some amazing functionality just to get me stuck with their phone OS. Now I have to choose which couple apps I want since I don't have no room for then all.
I swear what really bothers me is the way they are ignoring the issue either they don't test their software at all which is possible since every damn thing sends rop be called a beta, their testers are incompitant or they ready just don't give a crap about the users "my guess " after all they are google they can do what they want and people use what google tells them to right. They are stealing the worst parts of old microsoft and making them their own.
We know they ain't going to fix it since its still a pressure in 2.3 heck soon I berr they start calling this sort of thing a feature!
Not sure what I expected really I know they do zilch when it comes to costumer service on all their products tt finding a phone number if you have an issue as a merchant with google checkout .
Sorry for the rant!

i did that "directly install apps on sdcard" thing with sdk. So when i first install an app no problem works with widgets on sd card (So they can work with widgets on sd card) but when i plug it to my computer via usb. Widgets gone. rebooting doesnt work.
They just need a hot widget refresher thing somehow cuz widgets can work on sd in first install until you do something with ur sd card :(

comeon this is the only real issue I have with android. makes a lot of apps practically useless!
di...@googlemail.com <di...@googlemail.com> #127
I thought this would have been fixed in Gingerbread as I am using a Nexus One with Android 2.3.3 (Build GRI40) and the bug still exists. I have plenty of storage on my SD card and many apps can be run from the card but their widgets no longer work so I have to keep them in the phone memory which therefore limits the number of apps I can have installed. Some memory hoggers such as Adobe Flash, Twitter and K9 can't be moved to the card so this is a really annoying bug that should have been fixed ages ago.

As I am a developer and also a user I completely agree with MEDIUM priority for this task - the high priority tasks are the blocking ones - where You cannot use Your Android OS or device 'cos of some Android bug.
This is not a bug, I consider this as half-baked feature (You can save some of app install data on the external storage, but maybe forgotten You won't be able to use it's widgets then).
I understand all of You that want this task to be fixed and also wish this task to be resolved but You should understand that high-priority tasks should be solved first...
If You are developers or company selling Android apps think of developing less-memory-consumpting apps so users won't need to move app data to SD cards or think of disabling the ability to move app data to SD card while this task isn't fixed.
I believe that Android OS developers are doing their best for us - Android consumers - to be happy and satisfied.
HAWK.

App developers please note: I have had to stop buying Android apps because my phone is out of internal memory. I cannot move any more apps to SD and have to move some back to work around Android bugs like this. Since Google pays so little attention to users, perhaps you devs can put a bit of pressure on. Otherwise, you will be dependent entirely on new users for growth, and that is not a good strategy for any company.

It's just like Google to act this way and ignore a huge issue like this. As with anything Google there is no direct support and instead just threads and threads of people having to beg to attempt to get a bug fixed. Can't wait to switch to the iPhone because if u don't have an iPhone you don't have an iPhone.
qd...@gmail.com <qd...@gmail.com> #288
Obviously, the issues with Android systems are disadvantageous. Common when you live in an Occident culture where nearly anything can be named "medium", majority or minority. With minimal to no care to resolve pertinent issues like move to SD card function with home screen widget capability, it's beguiles genuine customers into thinking such Companies are just as genuine, generous, and in servitude for the people especially when there are corporations intentionally making viruses for computer and biological systems! If this problem can be "solved" by Google instead of labeling it a medium prot which in other terms mean low dump files, then it will get the benefits it deserves. However, in the artificial world created around us, nothing will be perfect but there's an enormity of information being suppress from the public and problems like this are like throwing darts. It doesn't take a genuis to overstand this Android/Google issues along with trillions of others in this world needs to be resolved....but if profit is always put before people than we all can expect little to no solutions. HTC EVO 4G - A being not a robot for push button controls.

What I find surprising, is the ignorance commonly
revealed by people who try to put faith, trust, and
wisdom into the mindset of any corporation.

Not being able to access widgets from the SD card defeats the purpose of having this storage.
Dare I say it but this is where the iPhone has it superiority over Android so I strongly suggest you fix the situation quickly or people will move to other platforms that give them everything they want in a modern smart phone.

What a cock up, first you are limited to how many apps you can have by your phone's internal memory (remembering you need to keep a reasonable amount free as working memory to stop the android system crashing), then you put in a half arsed fix where the apps don't work properly.
Seems to me your putting all your efforts into the tablet fixes for android and neglecting your current (and much larger) user base.
Whose going to buy an android tablet after bad experiences with their phone?

Latest chapter in this saga: The Google+ app is updated to support video hangouts. Excellent! But, after updating the app (which has grown significantly) I'm getting the low memory warning again. Google+ can now be moved to the SD Card which addressed the memory problem but now the Google+ Widget is gone.
I doubt this problem is being ignored by Google. Clearly, its hindering one of their showcased products in Google+. I suspect that Google+ can be moved to the SD Card now because of the size increase. They must've made a decision to sacrifice the widget to allow video hangouts and SD Card relocation.
I don't think this issue a matter of Google not recognizing it. Its more likely a genuine technical hurdle with no particularly simple solution. With that said, it would do wonders for Google's credibility to just disclose what the issue is and why they haven't addressed it yet. Remaining silent won't make it go away and the longer they choose to not address it, the more their credibility erodes with both the users and developers.

solution: 1. move mixzing or any other app to sd card. 2. restart the phone. 3. remove widget belonging the app that you moved to sd card from home/user screen if there. 4. open home/user screen again. 5. open all applications screen. 6. choose the app that you want to see on home/user screen. 7. tap it and keep tapped until home/use screen opens. 8. drop it there. 9. done! jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #456
You know i came here from that app mixzing sane as everyone . I didn't bother to read the comments until I reached the bottom of the page... It said 1and a half years waiting for this issue to be resolved. I spent 2hours on the phone with t-mobile tech support yesterday with the same issue and same results. Are we as customers supposed to just accept the shortcomings of the companies we do business with? I think not! No way in he'll I'm going to continue to give my hard earned money to some huge company where your just a number with dollar signs.I'd even venture to guess there hasn't even been an effort to fix it. Why should they? In 3 to 6 mo.s this electronic item will probably be obselete. .. So what now?what can we do to get some action from these type of businesses? So now important going to go rant about it on my website. Just some food for thought folks.

If seems google doesn't care. Google is just like every other company out. They started with great ideals and cared about what they were doing and listened to people's input but now it's run by greedy thoughtless CEO that only care about they're bottom line. It's pretty sad. But maybe if enough people show an interest in this issue they'll do something because they think it could affect they're profits. I do hope they fix this issue. I don't know if this is easy or hard thing to fix, but either way it's just stupid to have the OS set up like this. The whole idea with android is that you can load all kinds of programs on it, but where the hell did they think we were going to store all of them. The fact that they created a system that they knew programs stored externaly would be limited is idiotic. And then after a year of people complaining about it they still haven't done anything is beyond ridiculous. Although I'd be willing to bet that there's plent of programers at Google that would be more then happy to find a fix but they don't get the chance because the people who control the money don't think it's cost effective. Of course it's possible I could be wrong. Either way I hope some day soon someone will fix the problem.

I thought it was my issue but i can see a lot of us are bitten by this very bug.
Being a developer, i wanted to ship my application with widgets bundled in but now i think its better to wait.
Wait a second, even if they fix this issue, will everybody from 2.1 receive OTA? What about people using Samsung and HTC and Motorola then? They got to modify this OTA to suit their customizations..practically, cant see this happening. Good to ship widgets separately or just drop the idea of developing them.

ml...@gmail.com <ml...@gmail.com> #654
So I only get 145 MB on my phone. Average application size for me is about 10 MB, but unfortunately there's already about 100 MB of pre-programmed junk on my phone that I cannot remove. An SD card is required to download anything more than 4 apps, and then come to find out after I buy an 8 GB memory card with plenty of room for apps and such, as soon as I move them over, no widget and more than half of them don't work correctly. What is the point in having an android phone if you can't use any of the apps the way they were intended? I see now why so many people are switching to iphones. Looks like if you want software that works, that's probably your best bet. Better than wasting money on an expensive phone that doesn't work, even after you update it.

Come on Google. I use this app religiously! I want to save my music and videos to my SD card so if something goes awry... and with technology it's all but guaranteed... After all these years, hasn't anyone figured out a way to make widgets work after moving the app to SD card? Why can't anyone come up with an answer? It's so frustrating when you have so little space on your device, you buy a memory card, & then can't use it. No dudes, we're all Widget buddies now!
But seriously, this issue is why I'm so obsessed with keeping the file size of my apps low. Because the Xperia Play only has 512 MB of internal flash, and it's a real pain in the ass having to manage. But if they aren't going to fix it on Android 2.3/Gingerbread, it's pointless to fix it now since Android doesn't even use SD cards anymore (which is stupid of them)

You're receiving this email because you are subscribed to updates on Google IssueTracker
br...@gmail.com <br...@gmail.com> #737
Yes. Yes, you did subscribe to this. This bug tracker does not randomly crawl e-mail addresses from the internet with the sole purpose of annoying people. At some point, you subscribed to/starred this issue, meaning you will receive all future updates to this bug report via e-mail until you unsubscribe from it.
There's no use flaming at people for "being annoying" or "spamming you". This is not some sneaky opt-out system. You *chose* to receive these e-mails.
Either way, it now looks like this issue has become "intended behaviour"? I find that slightly weird, but it could be that the way Android manages apps on external storage has changed to somehow make this less of an issue?

Yes, you did. This is an automated system, and as such it does not have the
imagination nor sense of humour to come up with adding your e-mail address
onto its list as a joke.

To all
the idiots
demanding
to be
unsubscribed:
When you CLICKED the STAR at the top of the issue tracker page, you were SUBSCRIBING to receive UPDATES on the issue. If you don't want to be subscribed anymore, UNSUBSCRIBE YOURSELF by CLICKING THE STAR to change it from YELLOW TO WHITE. It literally takes ONE SECOND, vs all the time you're WASTING with the CYCLE OF SPAM YOU'RE CREATING. If that doesn't work for some reason, CONTACT GOOGLE instead of BOTHERING EVERYONE ELSE.
When you REPEATEDLY make STUPID comments like "ME TOO" or "UNSUBSCRIBE ME" or "STOP SPAMMING ME," YOU are the ones SPAMMING everyone else.
If people grow a BRAIN and use the system AS INTENDED, minimal update emails will be sent to those that have SUBSCRIBED.
If you really aren't SMART ENOUGH to figure this out, and can't take the 60 SECONDS it would take to do a GOOGLE SEARCH about it to EDUCATE YOURSELF, then maybe you shouldn't be using Android and should switch to an IPHONE.
I'm seriously starting to think many of these comments are just TROLLS due to the sudden sharp increase in them not only for this issue but for others as well. Also, because I TRULY HOPE people aren't actually this DENSE that they STILL DON'T GET IT after NUMEROUS comments attempting to explain it.
I tried to make this comment AS VISIBLE as I could since apparently the other DOZEN OR SO telling you this were MISSED.

Thank you for posting your reply.
Google has posted a response stating that this will not be fixed since it is an intended behavior. For those of you that don't understand how this works follow the advice and unclick the star to the left of the title.
Although this has been amusing for the past couple of months, I will be taking my own advice and unsubscribing.
If you really don't understand how this works, just do yourself a favor and get an iPhone.

Thank you for that. Would that there was a way to move the widgets back to internal memory without moving the entire application back to internal memory.

1) Install any apps that has home screen widget (ex: smooth calendar)
2) move it to sdcard via 'manage application'
3) back to home screen, long press then touch to select 'widget'
4) see that the widget from the app installed on sdcard has gone.

==> Widgets list from application installed in sdcard not show up in the

- What you think the correct behavior should be.
