Hallo Dear Google!
Hallo Dear Android!

Hallo From Nexus One!

In our country (Georgia, Republic of), we have problem to use our Android
phones, because we haven't support of our Georgian Language on our phones.
Last I had Windows Mobile, but there wasn't the same problem.

My friends are Rooting the Android System and they can use Georgian Unicode
in there phones, but I don't want to crash my official system.

Please Help!

same problem here.
don't want to root (and potentially brick) my Hero.. but I have no other alternative -
too loyal to google to buy iPhone ;)

Is it that difficult to issue an official update/patch including new sys fonts??!

I'm an HTC Desire owner and confirm that there is no Georgian glyph even in Andoird 2.2. Please add support...

DeJaVu font project has excellent georgian glyph support since v. 2.28.
IMHO is enough to have georgian glyphs range from DejaVuSans.ttf and DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf.

Thank you for attention!

I've HTC Desire and everything is working fine except I get squares when visiting georgian sites.

Back in 2003 georgian layout and fonts were pushed to XFree86.
In 2010 it's shame that default unicode font does not include georgian glyphs.

Whom is this request assigned to?

Froyo 2.2, same dumb thing, cannot google make something till the end as it should be done?
Nov 5, 2010
#15 valgog
Come on, Google is a commercial corporation, they do not do anything for free. And I can imagine, that adding marginal fonts with possible user base less then 1000000 people is just uninteresting for them. I do not understand why Apple iOS has Georgian Fonts :)
Nov 5, 2010
#16 gio...@gmail.com
Bullshit, they're just have pretty dumb programmers and managers in some field.

It takes 2 minutes to include the fonts in the source, not more...
Nov 5, 2010
#17 gio...@gmail.com
Apple doesn't have standard architecture, they're working only on their way, that's why...
Nov 5, 2010
#18 valgog
What does not standard architecture (do not know, what do you call not standard in regards to iOS) has to do with the availability of resources for including marginal scripting system glyphs into their UNICODE font bundle.

It takes more then 2 minutes to make stylistically fitting glyphs for Georgian or Armenian scripts. Android fonts glyphs all have common style and somebody has to pay to the company, that is making a freeware (not free) fonts for Android, so that they make a correct font (see http://www.droidfonts.com/)...

Nothing is easy in big corporations, and they should have enough reason to push some new features into the product. I can imagine, that Georgian Glyphs are not of a priority... though it is really sad :(

Issue 12379 has been merged into this issue.
Nov 6, 2010
#20 gio...@gmail.com
Valgog, It will take to long for me to explain it to you, but you're wrong in all your three strings.

Need a 1 minute attention to include fonts.
Nov 6, 2010
#21 valgog
:) I tried my best to explain the difficulties. It is up to you to consider them or not :)

Adding a font is not a problem technically, creating the right font is an issue... not for you, but for a corporation with its legal departments and bureaucracy.

I would be first to enjoy the existence of Georgian Glyphs on Android.

Nov 6, 2010
#22 gio...@gmail.com
There are no difficulties! Creating right font is an issue??? There are ONLY FOUR persons who are creating Georgian Glyphs, all are personally known for me and some other users already posted here, there are STANDARD and LEGAL, GPL fonts like DejaVu, 100% compatible with Android if merged, if you don't like - tell me and I will ask to correct or recreate it, it will take a week, not more.

So, let's conclude:

1. There is nothing special to be done technically.
2. There is no problem with copyrights and law.
3. There is no problem with creating glyphs of any king.

Tell me where is the problem please. I just see that some guys in some "corporations" are doing just nothing, because nobody gives a ,,,, of Georgian Glyphs.

Yes, I am kinda confused and angry, shouldn't?

So, who is responsible person on this issue? Who can and must answer on the two simple questions as a volunteer, project manager, employee etc:
1. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING THERE?
2. WHY COMMUNITY AND OPENSOURCE PROJECT IS MANAGED THIS WAY?

Don't have a time? Tell us! We know how to write the code, how to test it, how to write glyphs. We are also working on IT development corporations, on the governments, on much critical projects and so on.

I respect and understand and use Google as search engine, but this doesn't tell me that Mobile OS development is going ok there. As I see we are unable to get results from very simple development issue - FONTS.
Nov 6, 2010
#23 valgog
That is what I wanted to say: nobody at Google cares about marginal features. They have other things to do... for example to claim, that their project is "open", not really opening and not allowing to contribute in reality.

Unfortunately I do not have any idea of how to esalate an issue in Android Project. Maybe it makes sense to write to the guys in Techcrunch, they seem to have an ability to escalate things at Google :)

Nov 6, 2010
#24 gio...@gmail.com
That's good - they're opening source and showing us how do they work, pretty interesting, but useless. It's like being heading doctor on the surgery with closed mouth and hands on the back.
Nov 7, 2010
#25 valgog
http://source.android.com/source/life-of-a-patch.html აი ბატონო :) Are you ready to contribute?
Nov 7, 2010
#26 gio...@gmail.com
Sure I'm ready, but let me remind: We cannot patch fonts, we can replace them :)
So, we need the guy who is responsible for fonts, we need an author of the default font.
Nov 8, 2010
#27 valgog
Ok, you do not have to change the file, you can probably add the file as it was done for Arabic, Hebrew or Thai. Have a look in http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/frameworks/base.git;a=tree;f=data/fonts

Fonts should be licensed under Apache 2 licensing model as you can see in Readme.txt file there.
Nov 8, 2010
#28 valgog
I suppose, if you friends -- the font designers -- contact Ascender (http://www.ascendercorp.com/custom/) one could probably push the Georgian version of the DroidFont in the correct style.
Nov 8, 2010
#29 gio...@gmail.com
Thank you for response

We have resources to push fonts to git tree with any required or preferred licensing, especially with OSS (Apache/GPL/MPL etc), so I just need to contact person who has git access or need to get it somehow...

So, you want to say that Ascender is responsible for pushing fonts into android git tree? Whom I need to talk there?
Nov 8, 2010
#30 valgog
No you submit the patch yourself following the instructions here http://source.android.com/source/life-of-a-patch.html

Ascender is responsible for all other DroidFont typeface files. So I can imagine, that Google would prefer to have a font, that "looks" like DroidFonts, that are created by Ascender and I suppose, you should not legally be allowed to create a font, that looks the same as DroidFont without getting permission for that from DroidFont creator (but from other hand they are Apache licensed, they should be allowing to contribute). I do not know, who should be contacted there, but I can imagine it is not a very big organization. So contacting them should not be a problem.

Jan 11, 2011
#42 herrl...@gmail.com
Dear Sir, Dear Madam

I'd like to discuss adding the georgian glyphs to the Droid* fonts and
also adding Georgian layout(s) to the android Input Service Provider

a) Fonts
At this moment we, georgians, need to root device and then patch the
Droid* fonts to have an ability to read georgian
on our devices. I've patched the Droid* fonts and added some georgian
glyphs to them. This patch also was accepted by CyanogenMOD ->
http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#change,383
Also those patched fonts work great on several devices.

b) IME
Georgian Alphabet have 33 caracters. Currently there are two popular
layouts. Georgian has no capitalization,
so no shift is needed on out layouts.
One uses 26 latin keys plus rest of 33 (7) are mapped on similar latin
letters. As Example
wie have 'sh'->შ, so this 'sh' ist mapped in layouts as double tap 's'
or long press on 's'.

1) My first work was base on LatinIME example.
PN:org.herrlado.android.kakeyboard on the market.
But this is very simple and do not have any other layouts.

2) Then I've provided georgian layout to the SmartKeyboard (pro).

3) And now I'm a co developer to the AnySoftKeyboard. I've implemented
there some georgian and non georgian
layouts. I've also crawled a very good word list for suggestions.
This layout could be found under
pn:org.herrlado.ask.languagepack.georgian

So we georgians would like to see our language in the android. At
this moment it seems to be to complicated
to make the georgian localization, but it has a low priority to us.
Currently we need

Prio a: Glyphs in the fonts, to read at least on the android without
rooting the device and loosing the waranty
Prio b: IME
Prio c: Localization to Locale ka

With regards,
Lado Kumsiashvili

Hi Lado, did you try to submit the patch via http://source.android.com/source/life-of-a-patch.html

I do not really think, that Google guys are bothering reading this thread.

George Machitidze is also working on the issue, did you coordinate with him? As far as I understood, he was trying to get in contact with Ascender on that issue.

With best regards,

Valentine Gogichashvili

Lado, I think there is no problem to ask Mr. BPG (dejavu author) to include his fonts under another license, we just need to check under which one should it fall, can you please ask while you're registered already?

I know that there is a patch that is waiting approval:

https://review.source.android.com/#change,23143

It would be super that time by time author of the patch (lado) updates this thread about the progress made.

Gio, if somebody is opening this issue for the first time, one has a possibility to either vote for the issue and get notifications, or leave a comment and, as I suppose, also kind of vote for the issue...

I am quite pessimistinc about the chances of getting georgian font on Android devices this or even next year. Even if it makes it into the pure Google Phones like Nexus and Nexus S, a huge delay of porting new systems to old HTC of Samsung devices makes it practically impossible to get the right update soon.

But what was done, was good, and we should hope, that it finally gets into HEAD of Android :) And maybe some super-puper new device with Android 3.1 or something will already have it...

Until then... will still see squares in my facebook app :)

hello everyone!
I'm also looking forward to the official update of Android, including Georgian Unicode, but I've found one temporary solution for seeing Georgian font in my HTC Desire HD Opera mini browsers (I paraphrase: it doesn't replace Georgian fonts for your Phone).
download Opera mini Browser for android and follow the instruction stipulated in the link below:

... and enjoy seeing Georgian fonts without rooting you device... :))

Please, tell us if we can at last count to having Georgian font on Android in near future. It would help a lot to so many people...

another question: I'm new to android (2.2) so I don't know if the problem with the fonts also applies to word documents (in the attachments feg) or that is easier to solve?

Jun 30, 2011
#139 temop...@gmail.com
No, the link is still there. The solution was like this:
(quote)
Android internet browser doesn’t support indic unicode fonts. But don’t panic Opera Mini browser supports unicode fonts through bitmap rendering.I always had difficulty viewing Nepali websites on my phone. Although I have upgraded my Galaxy S to Gingerbread. Still there seems no support for unicode fonts on Internet browser.

Here is how you can enable support for complex scripts on Opera Mini browser.

1) Type about:config on address bar of opera mini browser

2) On the configuration page scrolldown to the bottom where you can see “Use bitmap fonts for complex scripts”. Change the value from “No” to “Yes”

3) Save the configuration and you’re done.

The same rule applies to the Georgian fonts too...

hello everyone. So Opera Mini solves part of the problem where web content can be viewed in Georgian (without small boxes), but that's only for web content viewing using the Opera browser. Still no support for synced applications that use original browser and typing. Shame on Google/Android market for not caring to develop or work with the developers on this issue.
P.S. Opera mini works on HTC EVO 3D which rocks by the way.

Hey guys, I'm from Armenia, and we have a similar issue with the Armenian fonts. We tried to contact Google, but we got no help from them. However we found another solution. One of our mobile operators Orange Armenia contacted HTC asking them to add support for Armenian fonts and now after 2.3.3 update two of their models (Desire HD and Desire Z) officially support Armenian fonts. HTC has also promised that their new models would also support Armenian fonts. Of course we would like an Android support for all Android devices, but this is also a good start.

So I suggest that you ask your mobile operators to officially contact phone manufacturers to support Georgian fonts. I wish you good luck :)

Unfortunately even if georgian font changes are integrated into the trunk current phone owners will not get that update. I have HTC Desire with HTC Official update 2.3.3 (Gingerbread). Today my phone can read Georgian and write Georgian.
Just google revolutionary and how to use it. This will give you ability to replace
/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf with any font you like. I've used DejaVu-Sans from fonts.ge.

This will give you ability to read Georgian.

Then go the Android Market and search for Georgian Keyboard (Developer Lado Kumsiashvili). This will give you ability to write Georgian.

Problem solved.

How to replace this font if I even cannot find the system folder. and I'm sure I wont be able to replace the system font even if I find it because it will need root.

You can root android 2.3.3 as I did with HTC Desire.
If you are not an advanced user I would not recommend doing it because you can brick your phone easily.

BTW I'm watching this page as it reflects the current status of integration of Georgian fonts.

https://review.source.android.com/#/c/23143/

Today Conley Owens asked Lado Kumsiashvili to attach new patchset to this change.

https://review.source.android.com/#/c/20557/

It took him one month to respond. I guess when Lado relocates files to the original change we'll have one more OK from Android team.

Good news everyone :) Today I have looked up the Android-4.0 sources, and guest what I found there /home/vgogichashvili/src/android/frameworks/base/data/fonts:

/src/android/frameworks/base/data/fonts/fallback_fonts.xml
contains the following lines:
<family><fileset><file>DroidSansArmenian.ttf</file></fileset></family>
<family><fileset><file>DroidSansGeorgian.ttf</file></fileset></family>

And, among other new font files, there are two nice files there:
-rw-rw-r-- 25K 2011-12-03 17:47 DroidSansArmenian.ttf
-rw-rw-r-- 46K 2011-12-03 17:47 DroidSansGeorgian.ttf

So the fonts, that we are all have been waiting for, are finally there in the master branch of Android OS sources...

Now let's hope our phones will get the updates to the Ice Cream Sandwich soon enough.

აი რა წერია fallback_fonts.xml ფაილში:

Fallback Fonts

This file specifies the fonts, and the priority order, that will be searched for any
glyphs not handled by the default fonts specified in /system/etc/system_fonts.xml.
Each entry consists of a family tag and a list of files (file names) which support that
family. The fonts for each family are listed in the order of the styles that they
handle (the order is: regular, bold, italic, and bold-italic). The order in which the
families are listed in this file represents the order in which these fallback fonts
will be searched for glyphs that are not supported by the default system fonts (which are
    found in /system/etc/system_fonts.xml).

Note that there is not nameset for fallback fonts, unlike the fonts specified in
system_fonts.xml. The ability to support specific names in fallback fonts may be supported
in the future. For now, the lack of files entries here is an indicator to the system that
these are fallback fonts, instead of default named system fonts.

There is another optional file in /vendor/etc/fallback_fonts.xml. That file can be used to
provide references to other font families that should be used in addition to the default
fallback fonts. That file can also specify the order in which the fallback fonts should be
searched, to ensure that a vendor-provided font will be used before another fallback font
which happens to handle the same glyph.

I was fed up with waiting for it and just rooted my phone. Happy new year to all Android customers but shame on Google who could make a present to his customers but didn't do.

It is included. Poorly but included. So we can read georgian but no bold and not italic, etc. Also the Writing is supported by third party soft keyboards.

Newer versions of android have already implemented Georgian. Android keyboard comes with an option to write in Georgian and of course see the symbols.

I am trying to learn Georgian and it is annoying not being able to read in it on my phone. I am not good with technology and I don't know how to add this on my own.

I have already rooted my phone. I could not wait until google would deliver
Georgian fonts to the htc Desire HD and its old version of android. Now I
fully enjoy and control the content on my phone. :)
