|Issue 7529:||News and Weather App/Widget: Use actual location, instead of locale setting, for news|

It appears that the selection of news topics, and the sources and contents of articles themselves, are based solely on the locale selected in a device's settings. Given how few locales are available and how widely-spoken languages like English, French, and Spanish are, this seems wrong. For example, in the case of English, there are only two locale options: English (United Kingdom) and English (United States). In the absence of an English (Canada) option, I chose UK for the common spellings. As a result, I'm offered UK-focused news, which isn't of interest to me. If Canadian-focused news isn't available, I would be more interested in getting US news. The simple solution (from the user's perspective) would be to use the actual location of the device to decide what news to offer. This must be doable, since the location is already being used for the weather. Another solution would be to allow the user to choose which country he/she wants the news customized for, with the initial, default selection being determined from the locale or, preferably, location of the device. This would mean an extra setting, but it would also mean that a user could, for example, choose whether to receive local news or news from home while traveling. I filed this as a feature request because it certainly appears to be working as designed. However, in reality, I'd call it a design bug, as it renders the news portion of the News and Weather app useless for whole classes of users.

OH YES! I had the same issue. I chose UK for common spellings too and ended up getting a bunch of UK centric news stories. Google news allows selections for so many locales. Why can't this widget? If they can base it on the GPS location that'd be even better. But allowing the option of choosing countries that are available in Google News would be the minimum.

No thank-you. When I'm travelling with work, I do NOT want the local news - I want the news for my home, i.e. my locale, not my current location. No problem with this as an option, but please not as a default.

+1 vote from me to make this an option. I'm a Brit living in the USA, and I still spell things the UK way, however setting the locale to 'en-gb' gives me all the UK-centric news feeds, rather than the ones at home. Also, it would be nice if Google News feeds were synced with the news applet too.

Google news has so many country settings on the web. Why can't I be given the option to pick one of those? The way the widget is currently implemented is terrible.

I don't understand why choosing that I spell 'colour' as 'colour' I have to read news from the UK? Last I heard, Canada had it's own news.

Got the same problem here. I bought my phone in Quebec (Canada) and now that I'm back to France, I only have news from Canada. I tried installing a French .APK and it worked for a day or two and then switched back to Canada. Please let us choose which country we want to follow in the options.

This website is for developer issues with AOSP Android not Google apps such as News and Weather. Please report your issue to "Google mobile help forum" where there are dedicated forums for each Google mobile app - you are much more likely to get a response there.
