I have the same problem on my Evo 4g running 2.2. I think this is should be a bugfix and not an enhancement. What possible reason would there be to have the external speaker make noise while the phone is connected to a headset? This is an embarrassing bug that needs to be addressed soon.
Also, it doesn't just happen while music is playing. Notifications will always play through the external speaker. The only way to stop notifications through the external speaker is to set the to silent or vibrate which stops ALL notification sounds including ones through the headphones.
Please fix.

This happens with my Samsung Vibrant, except I hear default notifications and the incoming call ringtone on *both* the headphones and the phone's speaker.
Recently, SMS notifications have started to ONLY come from the speaker and not the headphones, though last week they were coming from both.
I don't get it.

My problem is a bit different although I imagine the solution can be the same. Right now my Nexus One only rings at half volume (the phone) when I have my headphones in. I would like to be able to make it ring at full volume w/ headphones because I frequently leave my headphones in when put my phone in my pocket. At half volume I may not hear it, especially in the wimter with extra clothes, etc.
I guess a menu in settings would solve it.

I have a different issue: On my HTC Desire HD (2.2) these notifications are going either via speaker or via headphones, while i want both. li...@gmail.com <li...@gmail.com> #20
This is a major issue.
st...@gmail.com <st...@gmail.com> #21
Not entirely the same as the issue reported here but on a similar note: On my Samsung Galaxy S the notification sound plays on both my headphones as well as the external speaker. I can think of situations where this is desirable: For instance when you've removed the headphones from your ears: you may still want to be notified of incoming messages.
But I highly doubt that this is so common that this should be the default behaviour. 99% of the time when I get a notification with my earphones plugged in, I'm sitting in a train, perhaps even in a silent compartment, listening to music. The last thing I want is to annoy everyone else in the train whenever I get a Google Talk message.
In short I feel this is either a bug that needs fixing or a feature that needs an on/off switch, perhaps with it's default set to off... I've not found any settings relevant to this issue.

HTC Desire Z with Froyo 2.2.1 is also defective in the way it handles sounds through the speaker, when the headphones are plugged in. Any ring or notification is heard through both the speaker and the headphones.

If an option is implemented the default should not be the current behavior.
Most people expect no sound from the speakers when headphones are plugged in. This is how other phones work. This is how home stereos work. This is how Android should work.

That's correct. CyanogenMod has had this defaulted to off since at least 7.0, if not earlier. You can force notifications to play through the speaker under Settings > CyanogenMod settings > Sound. The fact that stock Android doesn't have this is frustrating at best.

Not only is this still present on Galaxy Nexus / Android 4, but Google managed to make a total mess of how these volumes are handled.
The following was tested with the bundled Music app: When notifications need to generate a sound while the headphones are on and music plays, the following occurs: the music sound, not playback, is suppressed and the notification sound is produced both in headphones and in the phone's main speaker. The notification sound no longer takes into account the volume setting for Notifications/Ringtones, instead it is produced at the volume level configured with the Music volume setting.
PROBLEM: Everyone around you is ANNOYED by the notification sound produced out of the phone's speaker. If someone fires out at you a couple of lines on GTalk while you listen to music, you have to quickly fiddle with the phone's volume settings to avoid the death-wishing looks everyone around will aim at you. Even if you set the volume level for notifications very low - to avoid annoying people and rely on detecting a notification by listening for gaps in music playback - it doesn't matter because that volume is NO LONGER taken into account for notifications when the headphones are on.
To screw up matters royally, in apps that are not coded around this FUGLY behavior, so not in Google Music but in something like PowerAMP, a little bit of sound comes out of the phone's speaker, from the music playing at that moment. This comes chaotically, just before or after the notification sound is produced. If you thought a "CLINK!" is annoying to those around you, then wait until this is decorated with a little bit of death metal or whatever you're listening while the notification is produced.

Bump, frustrated Galaxy Nexus users here.
I work in a cube farm. So, I usually have headphones connected to the phone so as not to disturb my cube-mates. I got a phone call today, and to my surprise the ringer plays through the external speaker even when headphones are connected. In fact, so do notifications and alarms.
My original droid would route ALL sound through the headphones when they are connected, which is what I expected the Galaxy Nexus to do also. I really need ALL audio to route through the headphones when they are connected. I opened a ticket with Verizon, but I have not heard anything back. HELP!!

Apparently, after a call to Samsung, this may bean intended "feature" of Droid products. Making sure you can still be aware of notifications and alarms in case you are not wearing your headphones.

Same issue here on a Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100), Gingerbread 2.3.6, UK, Unbranded. Most annoying thing is, on my handset, email, sms/mms (and other messaging apps) notifications don't even play through the headphones at all when I'm listening to music, even if I haven't got it set to silent/vibrate mode!
Coming up to 2 years now (since 1st post) and still no fix???
Is it really un-acceptable to ask for a common feature/setting that other mobile phones (from the last decade) already have as standard?? Kinda reminds me of the 1st iPhone not having the mms funcionality! At least now, Apple has pretty much got all the standard 'mobile phone' features sorted out.
So to me, I'm afraid this goes down very much so as a school-boy error! Unlike the 'Antenna-gate' issue on the iPhone 4, this isn't a hardware problem so should be fixable.
C'mon Google (or Samsung or whoever), considering that you're direactly trying to compete with the big 'A', you should really know better..

Agreed with above with above about adding a profile. This should be basic. Who would ever want their notifications to play on their headset and their device (effectively 2 notifications).
I do not have much confidence this will ever be corrected. As this "enhancement" does not look to be assigned and open for 2+ years. Just because there are only 141 people at present that starred this. That doesn't mean more do not want this. This thread took hours of digging to find. Please fix this.

Is anyone aware of a way to escalate this issue, or somehow get it to the attention of the appropriate people at Google? As many have stated, this seems like such a simple problem to fix (if you're willing to root your phone, it's one line of code). I think part of the problem is that there are multiple issues open for the same or related problems. I just did a quick search and saw at least three others (numbers 16667, 4334, and 2534). Clearly this is something people would like to see resolved.

I'd suggest using CyanogenMod v9 on the Galaxy Nexus, but sadly, it has the same issue. Someone earlier in the thread said they contact Samsung about this and that Samsung said this was "intended" behavior, and a followup said that Cyanogen had options for which notifications played over the speaker, but I see no such settings in CM9.
no...@gmail.com <no...@gmail.com> #95
Mu solution, sadly, was to create a ringtone with a few seconds of silence, then a short "beep" and a few more seconds of silence. This way when listening with headphones, the music/podcast/whatever pauses, I get a bit blank and a beep. I know what that means, but the short audible beep from the speaker doesn't bother anyone.
Not ideal, and REALLY wish it would be fixed more gracefully, but is seems google doesn't really give a rats ass.

According to this thread, it's been almost 2 and a half years (possibly longer), and still this problem persists... I love Android to bits, but it's because of little things like these that the quality will always be lower than Apple's... and it pains me to say this, because I reeeaaalllyyy don't like iOs one bit...

If you know this to be true, can you please point us to what that one line of code would be? I'm fine with setting up a build environment and patching code, but I don't want to re-invent the wheel learning how to make this one change if someone already knows how.

Anyone know if there is a setting to disable this in AOKP? (considering there is one in CM9)
I flashed AOKP ICS and now when I'm playing music in the library on headphones and I get a text message, it plays the music and notification out of the SPEAKERS. This is like the troll-iest bug/feature ever.
But yeah, I figure if CM9 lets you prevent this stupid thing from happening...does AOKP? Can't find any options...
On Galaxy s2 i777 AOKP with siyah kernel.

New android user having this problem as well...surprised there's no third party app for a two year old problem. Not the first time I have wished for coding knowledge.
cr...@gmail.com <cr...@gmail.com> #108
Why is this still an issue? Headphones are in, but calls and alerts are still playing through external speaker, which is terrible in a work setting. Google should have had this issue resolved a long time ago. A 3rd party could make some money off of resolving this with an app. Simply nonsense

Imagine my surprise to get my first Android phone (Galaxy SIII) after some trepidation and learn that this incredibly annoying issue was reported TWO YEARS AND SIX MONTHS AGO and still hasn't been resolved. I'm not new to Android, but I thought I was overlooking something in the settings and that was why I am also having this problem. My new S3 has this issue, but my Droid X from Moto worked "properly" by pushing all sounds to connected headphones. How odd is it that Motorola actually did something truly user friendly?
es...@gmail.com <es...@gmail.com> #118
Yes this also worked correctly on my Droid X. I just upgraded to the S3 and this is my only complaint so far. Please correct this asap.. i shouldn't have to switch to a different profile. I dont want to mute it because I want to hear it. Thanks
cr...@gmail.com <cr...@gmail.com> #119
Same issue on samsung s2 ics. I ended up muting notification sound. Means I miss incoming sms txts messages all the time. Not a great solution. Can't find an app that does a sound profile change when plugging in headphones either..
me...@gmail.com <me...@gmail.com> #120
This issue may seem like a small little insignificant detail to google, but for an everyday heavy phone user this is extremely irritating. I have swtiched from an iPhone to an S3 and to be quite honest i am regretting it, largely due to this issue. Its just silly that the sound is not automatically rerouted to the headphones once they are plugged in. Surly this is basic common sense? I work in a shared office, it is inappropriate to have text notifications or worse call ringtones going off when actually i have my headphones in listening to music.
This needs sorting out and fast.
Very very occasionally i will actually have the notification sounds come through the headphones, but the next text along its back to coming out of the main speaker.
I am considering going back to the shop to complain, and even possibly reverting back to apple. Who i had zero issues with any features on their items.
If google with samsung really wants to compete fully and efficiently with its rival, it needs to really think carefully about its OS ensuring glitches like this dont occur and it consistently runs as smooth if not better than iOS.

Same issue on Samsung Galaxy S3. ALL sounds, all music, everything plays on external speaker when headphones plugged in. Then I was listening to music on my headphones while my hubby was home and he told me it was playing on the speaker too. Definitely not ok!!

Yup, Galaxy S3 same sound problem.
Feel pretty dumb when your at work listening to music and next thing you know a loud as hell notification goes off for everyone around my cube to hear. Sadly the apple fan boys got this one right and don't have this dumb issue when they flip the button on their phone things actually mute/vibrate as they should.

PS. I also use this app to make my phone automatically go silent at job! You can make it learn places you go and make actions you decide, like switching profiles! My preferred app since 2011!

Agreed. Google, there should be a way to change this feature. I now have a Moto G4 Play and I have the SAME issue on it that I had on my HTC Inspire and my Galaxy S3 before now.
And those apps mentioned above don't fix it, they only put everything but media into silent mode. I still want to hear the notifications in my headphones. I just shouldn't have to be looked at by other people when I get a call or a text and I'm in a place that is supposed to be quiet.

I never had this issue on any prior Samsung Android devices. I got an S20+ in September 2020, no issues. And then about two weeks ago, this issue started happening. I didn't change my headphones or any other BT devices. This happens with plug-in headphones and with BT headphones. This DOES NOT happen (yet) when connected to my car via BT.
I can't think of any settings I might have changed by accident.

Description
external speakers instead of the headphones.
If on headphones, all notifications should follow the same user determined settings, tru the
earpiece on a comfortable, not so loud notification.
In other words, if I get a SMS I would like to hear the same notification I chose for SMSs to be sent
to the earpiece, not to the phone speaker.
Fade out and back in would be a plus, as an elegant solution/support for media.
