Reported by JayPeeDa...@gmail.com, Dec 26, 2009
NOTE: This form is only for reporting user bugs in 2.0. For all other user
discussions please visit: http://groups.google.com/group/android-discuss

Please describe the problem in detail. Be sure to include:
- Steps to reproduce the problem.
1) Receive a text message
2) Pull down the task bar
3) Select the text
4) Respond to the text
from here, can use "back" to respond to other received messages.

- What happened.
Was using phone as described above, then used my "Messaging" shortcut to
check my previous conversations and all of them were gone and not recoverable.

- What you think the correct behavior should be.
All of my messages should not be deleted unless I have told the phone to do so.

I'm not the only one with this issues. Relevant links:

This is on Motorola DROID using 2.0.1 Android.

If you happen to have a development environment, please also run "adb
bugreport" and archive the output as it could help diagnose the problem.

SERIOUSLY. Losing 3000 messages just because the messaging app crashes. And not being able to retrieve them. How can this happen? How can this not be fixed 1 year after the bug report?
If you can't find the bug AT LEAST do something to automatically back the messages up instead of saying bah, come on, this is serious! This ain't '94, this kind of silly bugs should be FIXED, and we should not loose every important message one day just because our phones decide it!

If you are reading this then most likely you have had an issue with losing text messages, along with quite a few others. Just throwing your two cents in about why it isn't fixed wont help. Isolating why it is happening will. In order for them to figure out what is going wrong they need whats called a bug report.

IF YOU HAVE LOST YOUR MESSAGES DO NOT REPEAT ""DO NOT"" REBOOT YOUR PHONE.

If you do it stands a good chance that the debug data will be purged and you can not provide assistance in resolving this issue.

What you can do:
-Star the issue
-Provide the information about your phone
--carrier
--device
--software version
-Provide information about the lost messages incident
--debug file
--when
--what you were doing
--what apps you have installed(all of them)
--current app related settings

This data should you provide it will allow the bug to be diagnosed.

If you cant find the info use google or bing to find out how to get the info.

All I have to say beyond that is can you fix something you can't see?
They can't fix an issue they can't reproduce, providing this info will help them reproduce it and thus fix it.

Carrier : 3 in Melbourne, Australia
Device : HTC Desire HD
Android Version 2.2
Software number 1.32.861.5

I bought this phone less on the 25th of November 2010. This issue happened to me 1 week ago without me knowing. I was asleep and when i woke up, the whole messages were deleted. I have about 150+ messages, no multimedia messages at all. Certain messages contain important data such as account details and etc.

My Question.
If this issue has exist in android/HTC phone, WHY DIDN'T you guys NOTIFY US?
When we purchase a product, our mobile number, email address or home address is always provided, why didn't you guys notify us about this issue when our contact details has been provided, and 2nd, this is a MAJOR issue that can cause a lot of damages to us as a consumer. I have called HTC and having them to be ready to compensate me. If you guys has actually notified us about this issue, we may have find ways to back up the messages.

I am extremely disappointed with this issue and definitely i would like to see some compensation on my lost.

This happened to me about ten minutes ago.
Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S), AT&T, running 2.1

I opened my notifications bar to check a new text and when I clicked on the text, it led me to a blank new message. When I went back to Messaging, it said I had no new threads.

At the time, I had two conversations with ~1800 texts each, along with about 20 more with smaller amounts. I would understand if it was a memory problem, but it seems people here are experiencing the bug with much smaller text numbers.

The apps I currently have installed are Norton Security, Lookout Security, and Task Killer, among others. I have no texting apps aside from Messaging. I tried killing Messaging and restarting, and restarting my phone-- no results.

#860 raquelsm...@gmail.com
Droid Incredible, unrooted running Fro-yo. Task killer running but never had this problem before. I had a droid eris for about a year and never had this problem with it. Is it an issue with 2.2? Happened tonight for the second time since I got the phone in December. It only happens when I get a text and I'm about to unlock the phone to respond. Pleaseeeee fix!
Feb 2, 2011
#861 kaitlinf...@gmail.com
My phone has twice now deleted all of my texts. My total number of text messages in all conversations was definitely less than 1500 (my settings delete texts once a thread has reached 200) so I know its not a memory issue. I am using the stock Android messaging service. Both times that they were all deleted I was not doing anything on my phone, I picked it up to send a text and found all conversations gone. My texts should be there unless I have directly deleted them. I did a soft reset on my phone both times this has happened with no luck. The texts do not show up via the shortcut or the messaging widget. Also frequently when I am texting the screen will go up to the oldest message in the thread without my touching anything but the keyboard, I then have to scroll all the way back down to continue typing my message (very annoying when there are 200 messages in the thread). There seem to be hundreds of people with this issue which means thousands who just haven't posted in a thread. Considering messaging service is one of the main functions of a phone I feel this should be fixed.

Happened to my sister last night. I'm logging this comment because I have the same phone and I recommended it to her!

SMS Application wouldn't start, kept force closing.
The only solution I could find to fix this issue was to remove battery, which she did and re-started, after that all the messages were gone. She wasn't happy.

Phone: HTC Desire HD
Brand: Orange.

Just now, for the THIRD freaking time, all my smses were completely wiped clean too. The first time it happened, I was pissed drunk and I thought I must have deleted all my smses in my drunken state (which I would never do anyway). The second time it happened I was extremely sober. And then today for the third time it happened again. Plzzzzzzzz fix this!!!! Totally, I have lost around 5000+ sms already!

Unlike dangreen above who have lost precious data of such emotional value (and with whom I really sympathize) I may not have that many msges of such significant value and proportion, but they were very important to me nonetheless.

Third time here aswell. Been having a long txt conversation with a friend, was typing reply to last txt, pressed send and the box came up for half a second, and then dissapered but my txt didnt send pressed again, same problem, left txt messages last 20 txts dissapered. opened the conversatoin and it just stays stuck on loading. Tried to use smsbackup&restore and it found 0 txt messages. Restarted phone, and poof all gone. this is insane that it only happened a week and a half ago. first time i had this problem was when i updated to 2.2.1

This happened to me last night - all messages, including locked messages, deleted, seemingly out of nowhere. I am very unhappy about this. Why do I bother locking messages if the lock is rendered useless when my phone takes it upon itself to clean out all SMSes?

And the fact that ppl have been reporting this for over a year, really means that this is an issue. GET ON THE BALL GOOGLE, and STEP UP YOUR GAME or else the iphone really will start to steal your business, esp now that it's on verizon.

I have a Motorola Droid (first version) on the VZW network, btw

So is anything being done about this?

I thought it was a phone specific fault at first with my Desire Z, but now I see it's an Android issue.

This same thing has happened to me twice now. The first time I lost over a thousand messages, the second time I was able to recover most of them from a backup tool I installed after the first round of deletion. On both occasions the phone did not crash, I did not do anything out of the ordinary, just swiped to the message window and there it was, "No Messages".

I'm a fairly heavy sms user, which is why I got the Desire Z in the first place (physical keyboard), but if this isn't resolved I'd rather get a different device/OS that doesn't randomly delete my data.

On a separate note, my phone is currently being sent off to see why I can't get MMS to work on it either. On Optus in Australia. My old HTC Touch Pro can still send and recieve MMS messages, and, more importantly STILL HAS EVERY SINGLE SMS ON IT THAT I EVER SENT AND RECEIVED FROM THE FIRST DAY I GOT IT.

I'm slowly becoming less fond of this new phone/OS.

Has happened to several times now. I am running 2.2, it is just getting frustrating now. I have had to restore my text messages now about 10 times. Droid Incredible, I've had it since November. This morning was the first incident where every single one of my texts, locked or otherwise, were randomly deleted.

I guess I should just be thankful that Verizon recently picked up the iPhone... Based upon the piss-poor lack of response thus far, I doubt any fix for this is coming in the near future.
Feb 11, 2011
#890 tmerlin...@gmail.com
I have a Droid Incredible. This is the first time that I have experienced this. I was texting someone and received their last comment. I went back to messages, and all of my other messages were gone. My current conversation was still saved, but all other conversations were gone. I verified that my phone is set to not delete messages after a certain amount or size (the option is unchecked). I tried powering down the phone and turning it back on to see if the messages would come back, but they didn't. Prior to this happening, I did have one text message that wouldn't deliver. I don't know if that's related or coincidental. I was pretty excited (and am still excited) about moving from BlackBerry to my Droid, but I really don't want to deal with the possibility of losing SMS/MMS messages..

This is happening almost daily to me and I was holding and watching the phone during one incident. This is what happens:

-message notification dings rapidly about 4-7 times.
-service on my HTC Legend goes out for approximately 5 seconds (no signal, says no service)
-when service is restored after 5 seconds all messages are gone
-once I saw a notification which said "com.android.messaging has stopped unexpectedly"

From most of the posts above it appears the problem is an HTC device only issue

Has been happening to the girlfriends LG Shine Plus for the last couple of months. Telus doesn't know how to fix it and since its been more than '30' days they won't replace it. I'm a software developer and I know that NO software bug should be open for this long, especially one that deletes sms messages. There is no way Android will be taking over the business market anytime soon with unresolved issues like this.

Hi guys. I'm using Android 2.2.1 on Galaxy S and have yet to encunter this problem.
I had previously faced this problem on my HTC HD2 (yes you read it right, I installed froyo on it).
Call me paranoid but I learnt from my mistake and now make use of 3 methods to backup all my precious SMSes.

1) Backup to your GMAIL account: "SMS Backup +"
http://www.appbrain.com/app/sms-backup/com.zegoggles.smssync
It can be downloaded for FREE from Android Market.

2)Backup to 3rd party server: "m:IQ
http://www.appbrain.com/app/m:iq/com.dashwire.miq
This is available on Android Market for FREE and it's a free service provided by "miqlive.com".

3) Backup to SDCard: "SMS Backup & Restore"
http://www.appbrain.com/app/sms-backup-restore/com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
Another wonderfull available on the Android Market for FREE.

By using all these 3 abv mentioned method the problem of google's buggy message app is effectively nullified IMHO.
All above android applications are recommended by me on an "as is" basis and I take no responsibility whatsoever should your phone cause you brain damage or mysteriously vanish.
Please lok though them, read the reviews, comments and then decide for your selves.

Hope this helps =)

HTC Desire on Orange using Android 2.2

Had phone sat next to me this afternoon and when I went to check a message that had just arrived, all 1000+ messages I had on my phone were just gone with no warning. This is a ridiculous issue to have going on so long. Didn't realise my messages weren't backed up anywhere; thought they'd be tied in with my google account.

Looks like this issue was raised over a year ago and still no solution?! Why should I have to go to the effort of backing up all my messages when this simply SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING! So angry. How about someone fixes this MASSIVE FLAW in the android system.

Just happened to my HTC Incredible running 2.2 for the second time in two months. Verizon tech support won't even acknowledge that it's an issue, and instead tried to blame it on my SD card (messages are not even stored on the SD card). This is a rather serious issue and should be addressed. I've had to resort to Evernote to save important info in texts. Not acceptable.

Just thought I'd add my name to this ever growing list... all my messages just disappeared before my very eyes last night. It occurred as a new textcame in. I read it and replied, then when I went back to view all messages it was empty (save for the text and reply I'd just made).

I'm also running android 2.2.1 on the HTC Desire Z, which I've only had for about 3 weeks now. Still, you can accumulate a lot of messages in 3 weeks! Absolutely gutted. Also, when I go to the htcsense.com website, I can't reach any other tab, except for the 'dashboard'...

I think it is time that we take some action on this. Many of our executives are coming back to us with this issue as they are losing important information. I have also lost thousands of text messages 3 times now.

When Apple had a silly little issue with their iPhone 4, the whole world made a fuss about it and the issue they had was nothing compared to this.

I think it's time we hit the papers with this story and let the world know of the issues we are having and that Google isn't interested in fixing this. How about some legal action?

Using HTC Desire Z, happened to me twice that the messages will get deleted for no reason. First time, I was using the normal default messaging app and things just disappeared. Further to my previous comment, I was doing nothing on the phone, received a text whose sender was announced by SayMyName App went to open it but kept getting this force stop message and when I restarted all but two txts, coming from 3, had disappeared. I have had 4 HTC Incredibles, all for different reasons, but each one of them randomly deletes the entire text message collection. Very, very, VERY, frustrating. No phone I've ever owned deleted all texts without warning. As much as I like the Droid this one defect makes ANY other phone look good.

Also, if you happen to use a backup program to restore them after they are gone the phone ends up being Dog slow.

I'm commenting both for myself and my sister. She has an HTC Incredible with stock ROM and stock SMS app. I have a 1st gen Motorola Droid running Cyanogen 6 and Handcent. For each of us, our messages have disappeared multiple times. I have heard (I can't exactly remember where) that this behavior is caused by an error in the database which for some reason is not properly repaired. To allow the app to launch, the database is deleted and rebuilt. What and how should I log to provide the best feedback to developers?

I got my Samsung Galaxy S last August 13, 2010 so almost a year now and it is in the firmware version 2.1 so just imagine for almost a year it has been happening to me and I thought things will get better in time but no it will not and I do not want to recommend this phone to anyone.. Better get a blackberry or iphone.. EVERYDAY when someone will send me an SMS or I am in the middle of reading an SMS or I was about to open an SMS suddenly it will freeze and there will be a message that it stopped working FORCE CLOSE and when it comes back again all the messages will be gone even the ones that I am not yet even opening. It is not happening only in the Messaging happens to the samsung application, facebook, games - almost everything inside the phone. I found another forum telling me how to fix the problem and i will updated all of you about the outcome. BUT SERIOUSLY, on a phone that boasting as a competitor of other huge brands DO I NEED TO SPEND HOURS searching the internet to find solutions to the issues that should not even be there in the first place??? A very very pricey phone, and this is not what I was expecting for..

8,000 gone for me on an original DROID. My messaging app crashed and I opened them up and they were gone. There wasn't anything important in there, but it's still annoying knowing their all gone. It sounds like it's an SQLite problem and not an Android problem, but it still feel's like Google's responsibility to get a fix in place or move to a different SQL platform. It's good to see his has been upgraded to "High priority."

I'll be looking into a backup utility, but I'm pretty sure my next phone will be a Verizon iPhone now. The two OS'es are pretty close in my mind and since SMS is very important to me this is indeed enough of an issue for me to jump to a competitor.

Comment 1035 by cross.da...@gmail.com, Today (15 hours ago)

I have an HTC EVO running Android 2.2. I had recently added the StumbleUpon application. I noticed that my text message threads have disappeared. I sent a message to someone, and I'm unsure if doing this would have overwritten any database files for storing MMS and SMS. Are there file recovery options for the internal memory on the phone? From what I've read /data/data/ is suppose to have a subdirectory that holds the database file if you get root access to the device.

Edit: I replicated the steps JayDee described and didn't have an issue. When returning to the home screen and using the Messages shortcut, it takes me back to the currently active SMS thread. I have no issue with my messages deleting by doing this.

I cannot seem to generate a log file that records when the incident took place. It does not seem to go back far enough in recording. I have an application to record the log now in case of a future event.

Default messaging app did a force close a couple of weeks ago, all messages were gone. Since then, it happened three times. Had 526 messages. Today, a message was received but I wasn't even able to see it: while the notification light flashed and sound alert was heard, the message was just lost without even seeing the text or sender.

Since the first time this happened, I have SMS backup/restore running every 1 hour and it came to me that at 5AM all messages were there, at 6AM no messages were in the backup anymore. I woke up at 6:30AM and thus wasn't using my phone.

Rebooted the phone, now messages are coming in again, but I'm just waiting for it to happen again.

I have had this issue happen twice already and I haven't even had the phone for 14 days yet. I'm sorry google but how can you go through 3 different software versions without fixing this issue is beyond me. How about you fix major problems like this then worry about releasing future updates like gingerbread and ice cream in which this problem will probably still exist. I think Google ran out of gold star icons. Sprint tech support said they'd never heard of the problem but would gladly sell me stuff. I've had this happen twice, just decided to look into it. I'm disgusted that Google doesn't seem to be looking into this more and isn't really making it priority. If they were really working on it, I'm confident Google would have been able to fix this by now. I don't care if my phone is a bit slower or even has to mirror the SMS data, just please fix this issue!

Running 2.2 for a while on a completely unmodified (never jailbroken, limited apps installed. no third party text apps) US verizon HTC Incredible. Also checked my messaging settings. Happened once on 2.1 and once on 2.2. I click the messages button on my home screen and it'll take a little longer than usual to open up, and then it does and everything is gone.

I love my Android but I really miss the Blackberry messaging. Blackberry was much easier to search texts and never randomly deleted all my ****! Can't rely on texts for records anymore. This creates extra work and is a pain to deal with. Also, my girlfriend just started yelling at me "you made me get an android" when she heard me complaining that this happens.

Google please fix this so I can recommend Android to more people. Devs feel free to email me if you think there's a way I can help with the issue.

#1098 domdef...@gmail.com
Same issue for me. I received a text, read it. An hour or so later, went back to messages, it indicated a new message when looking at the list of contacts, but it could tell it was the one from before. I selected the contact, and nothing happened, spinning wait thingy. Tried other contacts, same think, it would not display anyone's messages, and always showed the spinning wait thing. I reset the phone, now all the messages are gone.

A few months ago I lost all text from one contact. Even before that, I had lost all messages from all users.

Definitely a repeating issue.

Wiped all my 1.5k messages overnight, hadn't backed them up since I thought this is a reliable phone, but now I had to install SMS Backup app, because I'm not sure anymore..

I hope this gets resolved and the messages are not actually deleted, but misplaced somewhere and can be restored, lots of useful ones that I needed, not to mention the sentimental value of some threads.

No crash errors, nothing.

Any ideas how/if there's a chance to get them back?

6. 7.55 (?) alarm for the second time and i see pin keyboard - realized, that phone app had crashed
7. I input pin and check - all messages gone..."

Happened to me today. HTC Desire HD, Android 2.2.1. Over slept as no alarm. Phone was off. Started phone and entered pins. Advised battery is low (was at around 50% on going to bed!). Put phone on charge. Text message arrived so went to read it. Noticed that all other SMS messages had gone. NOT IMPRESSED! SMS should sync up with Google contacts/emails. Add docs as well.....

This has just happened to me today.

No text notification in my case. I just consulted my HTC sms widget, I saw my messages during 1 second, and then all have disappeared.

I think SMS backup is not the solution. A phone OS pretending to compete the Steve's one should manage SMS on a reliable way...

Maybe in a few years we'll have a solution...

Just happened to me as well. I sent a message, got a reply, and when I went to reply, the Messaging app failed with the following message:

The application Messaging

has stopped unexpectedly.
Please try again.

There was a "Force Quit" button in the dialog box, so I clicked that to close it. I tried a couple more times, and after 3-4 tries, it crashed the entire phone (caused it to reboot). When it came back, all my messages were gone. There were a few thousand messages in all (mostly text, but maybe a half-dozen MMS).

Phone and SD card both had lots of free space (840MB and 24.2GB respectively), more than enough to store a few hundred kilobytes of text.

Just last night my droid deleted all of my text messages. When I went to bed they were there and when I woke up they were all gone. I had text messages in there that were extreamly important to my case in court and they were just gone. Luckly last week I downloaded the SMS to TXT program and was able to take all of those messages off of my phone and onto my computer. However, even though I still have the messages I need my phone should not be deleting my text messages. If the memory or something is getting low then a message needs to come up saying memory is low please delete messages. It seems that all of the crappy phones will hold an unlimited amount of text messages but the higher end should be way better because they can do more phones can't keep that many text messages and delets crap when it feels like it. So sorry I can not provide further details about what happened when my phone deleted the messages but I was sleeping and apparently my phone wasn't.

Apparently, everything is stored in a sqlite database, which can not be backed up independently (copied) as a whole without rooting the phone ( Issue 1106 ). File name: /data/data/com.android.providers/telephony/databases/mmssms.db

If the sqlite db is corrupted, it gets silently erased and recreated, empty. ( Issue 10127 ) (PS. This is absolutely ridiculous default behavior...)

Unfortunately, there are a lot of different ways sqlite db's can get corrupted, some of which have been addressed with newer versions but the problem still occurs other ways. ( Issue 8427 ) Yes, this includes using task manager/killers, but I did not have one installed. I believe it was because of an application crash, but at the time I did not believe what had happened was an unrecoverable emergency so did not stop using the phone to make sure I could get the logs later.

I lost of stuff I valued because I thought Android developers cared about my data, at least enough to move corrupted files somewhere that I could have a chance to recover the contents later... unfortunately, it doesn't appear they are going to do much about it. (Issue 7589)

With little hope of getting this fixed soon I have installed SMS Backup+ by Jan Berkel ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync ); it works its way through the sqlite db and copies the contents to my gmail account, then copies new items as they appear. It can also copy things back but *when* this happens again I will just search in gmail instead of on phone, which is now demoted from tool to toy.

Apologies in advance for the 1000+ emails this will cause, but I hope this helps get the fire lit under Android devs to get a fix out that's backwards-compatible for people with older phones in the same way they are all excited about adding some new features when they are losing hundreds of people's critical data on a daily basis.

This happened to me for the first time last night! Stock HTC Thunderbolt. Never happened with my Droid.

The messaging app did crash on me but the messages didn't disappear right away. The phone had rebooted itself several times in the last couple days as well. These are the first problems I have had with this phone in the month that I have owned it.

I did reboot the phone hoping the messages would reappear, so I don't think I can add any important info to help.

Thanks JSPR for the long post, that was very informative. I just had this happen to me (HTC Evo 4G, stock 2.2 OS) where I woke up this morning and all 2000 or so text messages on my phone had vanished. My guess is that Advanced Task Killer was the culprit... in the near future I'll make a point of rooting my phone (so I don't need the app killer) and also installing SMS Backup, but none of this should have been necessary.

I did notice some odd things happening yesterday, it was all to do with draft messages. On one of my message threads there was a draft message which i part deleted and then resaved as i was busy at work. I did this several times and then on the last time it went back to the original unedited draft.

My MyTouch 4G just ate all my messages... :( Has Google commented on this problem? Even acknowledged that it exists?

(I'm not sure exactly what happened, but it was something like this: I received a new message. I clicked on the Message icon on the main screen to bring up my messages. The message app opened, but no messages were displayed. It just sat there for a while, then said the Messages application has stopped working. I had to press 'force quit' (or something like that) to get it to end. I think this 'force quit' happened twice. The 3rd time I tried to open my messages, all but a handful were gone. Most of the ones that were left were very old messages.)

Hey Google,

(insert rambling complaint and a veiled threat to switch services, even though the developers can't tell a person on this "thread" from Adam).

More helpfully...

Had the error occur on HTC Thunderbolt: unning stock Froyo 2.2. Plenty of free memory (according to Running Services), roughly 400 messages dating back 1 month.

Easy enough to restore from SMS Backup so no harm done.

I have had customers of mine report this issue, and the only commonality I've seen is that either the messages count is high (300+) or the text threads are older (4 months+).

Hope this helps, Android!

Twice in two weeks, but before that at least once a month for the year I've had the Droid Incredible (original adopter, May 2010). Ran stock messaging for a few months, Handcent a few more, and then a paid version of ChompSMS. I do have SMS backup that I run every morning, so not all is lost, but as a busy working mom to a toddler that doesn't sleep, I often need to refer to texts from sitters to remember what time I need to be home for them. Frustrating to have to keep wasting my time repopulating my texts and losing a few every time!

Message count is quite high in that I don't delete often, but I've had this problem from nearly Day 1.

My wife's HTC Desire that I got her just lost 6 months of SMS history!! It is totally ridiculous that Google does not address this issue. How is it possible that this issue priority is not "critical" and has been known and documented for about a year and a half with no word from Google? Are we all fools for falling for Google's (Android) marketing? I think a law suit may be required. It is a basic function that we expect from all of our phones nowadays. Shame on you Google.

I lost all messages from my HTC Desire HD on Vodafone(IE). They are coming around tomorrow to pick up the phone and give me a refund. A shame. I loved the phone, but this is too big an issue to work around. I had actually backed up all my messages using SMS Backup + ( great app ). Lost about 3 days worth of messages. Downside was that the restore function would not work with the phone. It kept force closing it before the backup could complete. I cannot open or send text messages.

If there was some interaction/response from Google techs. I would have kept the phone and worked around. 1 year turnaround time on such a massive problem with no update/acknowledgement of a problem shows how much they value our custom. Just glad that I am still within my refund window.

I will not mention the apple product (as I am a flash developer). Will have to steer clear of 'smart' phones and go back to my dumb Nokia.

Seriously, Google, you must be kidding me? How can you just have a bug like this lying around for over a year, with over 1000 reports of people losing their text messages, not to mention all those out there that didn't take the effort to report their problem, and not doing anything about it?

#1145 marcin....@gmail.com
It happened to me a couple of times in recent days... :( Fortunately, messages were backed up, although I have lost some since the last backup. Bug report is pointless, I have already submitted two in last six MONTHS!

Today my Desire HD has been updated to Android 2.3.3 - will see if the Gingerbread handles messages correctly.

My suspision is, that the file with messages db (SQLite?) get corruped or is mishandled in any other way, and after the messaging app can't read it anymore it deletes it and creates a new one.

* Had composed a message and pressed Send

Yesterday all my text messages got deleted. I just got my HTC Desire Z after using a Nokia N97 for a year and a half. The Nokia was the most frustrating phone ever so I was really happy I finally got a new phone. Now I’m not so sure anymore… I see this has been a problem for a long time now. Pretty disappointing.

Some extra information:
I tried sending a text message but my phone wouldn’t. Then all of a sudden noticed all of my messages, except for a few from September 2010, were gone.
I’m on Android 2.2.1
The battery was very low.
I had tried to install an update for some time, but it wouldn’t because the battery was too low. It even wouldn’t update when I attached my phone to the battery charger…

I’m hoping this problem gets solved.

Imagine THIS!! My 15yr old daughter has been getting threatened, stalked & harassed daily by someone. Someone stupid enough to do it via text messaging! Anyways so we have a court date set & our attorney says with these texts as proof its a sure thing. Im not very tech savvy at all but did understand that I needed to lock all of those texts to avoid accidental deleting, im just now after the fact learning about backing up options, well anyways so we wait a few months for the court date & sure enough the night before court I check the phone & BAM everything GONE, of courses I couldn't sleep at all that night & tried everything possible that I could to recover them with no luck. Court the next morning was quite an embarrassed when the "so called" solid evidence we had just vanished into thin air!! I felt like filing a lawsuit against Google & everyone else because our case was dropped from an indefinite stalking, skipping past a restraining order & all the way down to a no contact order! Maybe I should have been collecting other evidence but in reality those 27 texts where ALL we needed. Thanks alot Motorola & Google! My contract is up in 2 months & I think I might just be switching over to a NON Android smartphone! Oh & also today my phone is sitting on my dresser while I sat 5 feet away doing my makeup when suddenly I hear loud noises & follow the sound & its my phone & it sounded like it was in a call that was on speaker phone very loudly yet it WASN'T in a call. I could clearly hear someone coughing talking & flipping through pages of a magazine & they clearly weren't aware that I was listening. I couldn't hang it up somehow & when I put my phone in sleep mode then back on it was over but call log shows NO incoming or outgoing call at all. Its as if our phones somehow mysteriously connected without even calling each other if u know what I mean. Btw my daughters phone is a Motorola Droid running 2.2 & my phone is the exact same. Oh & I never mentioned all the times my phone is randomly surfing the web & texting on its own! I actually have videos if it happening. It has actually many times randomly chosen one of my contacts & then typed things like "djsjsndhckcnxj" then sent it! Totally embarrassing when I get a reply message from them saying "what??" then seeing the jibberish that "I" texted them! These issues are just a small amount of the nonsense that has been going on on our Droids & it all seems to have started with the last 2 updates we got. We do absolutely love our phones though, its just a love/hate relationship with them. Its been going on maybe a year Now & thousands of others experience the same issues & to see that (to my knowledge) Google hasn't done anything to fix these problems is very concerning

#1174 Heather....@gmail.com
This issues should have LONG been fixed by now. I can't believe it's been going on this long and non of the people at google have yet figure out how to stop it?!

I'm using a Droid Thunderbolt with Froyo 2.1 installed currently. I use ChompSMS but my messages were deleted in my native text app as well. I had messages locked to no avail. Just seems pretty limited of Google not to have a fix for this problem already. I will be careful recommending this product going forward that's for sure as I work in the cellular industry and touch hundreds of accounts looking to move to smartphones. I shouldn't have to have a separate back up program just to ensure my messages aren't lost.

This has happened to me twice so far and the first time it also deleted a message that I had "locked". Along with this it will randomly delete contacts and randomly shut off. Love my phone, just not the bugs. I have checked the water mark on the back and it still shows no moisture damage, so that is not the issue.

This has happened to me on a regular basis since I got my phone back in September of 2010. It was approximately once a month for a while. Yesterday it happened again, and I had a backup app so I restored them all like I've been doing since the first time this problem happened, but today, AGAIN, they're all gone! Two times in two days! That is infuriating! It takes a while for the backup app to restore, if this is increasing in frequency I'm going to be on my last nerve...

It appears to happen during the night most of the time, so I'm unaware exactly what's triggering it or what the phone does at the moment they go away (spontaneous reboot and then all texts gone was something I read in another thread, and I think that happened to me once in the middle of the day, reboot out of nowhere and where I had just had text messages... no more).

This happened twice to my HTC Evo. The first time I talked to Sprint, and they were less than helpful. The second time was last night. I wasn't using the phone for a couple hours, and the next time I checked my messages, they were all gone. This is very frustrating, Google needs to fix this. Like a previous poster said, I bet its the sqlite database that is getting corrupted and wiping itself clean. Still, the geniuses at Google should fix it! From reading this thread it appears to be a defect in the Android platform itself, not the fault of any particular carrier or phone manufacturer.

I barely talk on the phone, using texts as my primary communication medium. I has very important information that I've now lost and that I cant figure how to get back. If google cant fix this problem then they had better put out an app that backs up text messages to sd in case it happens again or my next phone will not be an android phone.

I have had my Droid (1st Gen. Droid) since October 2010. It was fine for the first month or so, then at random it started deleting all text, even locked ones!! The problem has become more frequent lately too. Its doing it at least twice a week now. I'm using the app that came on the phone. I tried handcent but it did the same thing. I have done factory resets and not downloaded any other apps (tech Guy with service provider thought an app was the problem), but they still vanished!! The phone is not set up to delete any messages regardless of how many are in the phone. This is a major problem that should have been fixed years ago!! If I knew i was getting stuck with a piece of junk like this I would have bought an iPhone, and if its not fixed soon that's what ill do and I will never buy another Droid phone again!!! Same problem - Simply opened my SMS message inbox (HTC Desire running Android 2.3) and complete inbox was empty.
Also emailed HTC support about the error to find out what the status is. I appreciate this may be an android software error but HTC clearly have an interest in ensuring this is fixed.
Minor glitches / errors are expected in all software, but irretrievable loss of personal data on any system due to a software error is not a minor error as noted in this thread with the priority of high. However I am wondering why the initial error was raised in Dec 2009 and as yet we have no resolution.

#1205 rashmidu...@gmail.com
Happened to me today. I am using HTC droid Incredible.. till morning I could see all messages.. one thread has 999 messages...when the thread got its 1000th message, my inbox was automatically cleared with just one message in it (1000th message). I have ample space and i dont see any default or manual setting to delete messages. Even i dont see any setting to set max number of messages in inbox. This is clearly unacceptable. Back-up in not an option unless otherwise adviced. How many times and what all one should backup before going into infinite backup loop.

I hope android ppl are listening and its high time they should look into this.

Exactly the same here on HTC Desire Z with Android 2.2.1 (. A few times notifications not received, thought it was just me not hearing them or accidentally clearing them. All of my messaging/SMS conversations have been deleted on several occasions over the past few months. It always happens to be at the worst time too. In researching this issue I have been lead to understand that it is because I have too many messages saved. How can that be when I have a total of 16 gigs of storage between the phone and my SD card? I have all auto delete settings turned off.

I am seriously questioning if this was the better purchase over an iPhone.
Jul 5, 2011
#1217 anthony....@gmail.com
I have the Droid Incredible and am running the handcent app for my messages. My messages were completely wiped out today for no reason at all. I had important LEGAL information in text message that needed to be saved.I never thought I would have to do a random backup when the conversation wasn't even at it's max capacity. I am having a hard time believing that there is a maximum amount of texts that can be stored on the phone. If they keep auto deleting as they hit the max setting, why would this ever fill up the memory and force a purge to happen? Google better do something about this fast... I just lost a lot of information that was EXTREMELY important to me and my life. I for one know that as soon as I can switch phones, will be doing so to an iPhone... this is unheard of and quite frankly unacceptable.

I just had this happen to me on my pretty darn new Nexus S(1 week old). I probably had only 250-300 texts in total, and of course the auto-delete options for individual conversations was turned off. I lost all of my messages from everyone.

I'm running the newest Andriod version, 2.3.4 I believe (I checked for new updates yesterday, put it that way).

As for statistics, I had only about 1GB of my 16GB's used, and only about half of the RAM in use at the time according to the app manager(before the messages were deleted).

I was given no crash message or anything. The messenger app acted like it was just fine, just given a blank slate.

There are some interesting stack traces related to missing tables in the logs e.g.

sqlite returned: error code = 1, msg = no such table: contact_threads

and then issues running this SQL:

08-03 18:02:41.625 E/DatabaseUtils(1432)android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException: no such table: contact_threads: , while compiling: SELECT unread_count FROM contact_threads WHERE _id=26 AND htc_category= 0 AND (_id IN (SELECT contact_id FROM contacts WHERE thread_id IN (SELECT DISTINCT thread_id FROM pdu WHERE htc_category= 0 AND (msg_box != 3 AND (m_type = 128 OR m_type = 132 OR m_type = 130)) UNION SELECT DISTINCT thread_id FROM sms WHERE htc_category= 0 AND (type != 3)))) ORDER BY  date DESC

The same thing has just happened to me. I wasn't even aware that there was such a well-known bug until I Googled for it (how ironic!). For those others who have had the same occur to them: is the message data storage intact (just the indexes corrupted), or are basically all of the text messages purged irrecovably from the phone? (I kindof assume the google backup option (which I have ticked) is supposed to take care of backing up data like this, but I can't seem to find a way to restore the backup)

This has happened to me today for the first time, about a year after getting my HTC Desire - on t-mobile, running 2.2.

I am FURIOUS about this, lost pictures of my daughter that had been sent, etc. I do not understand why Google haven't done anything about this yet. Needless to say, I'll be switching to an iPhone when my contract ends (and I never thought I'd say that).

This happened to me last night - HTC Desire which I got the week it came out untied to any carrier. I've thankfully last exported my messages the end of July so didn't loose my entire message history but what is disturbing about this serious defect is the complete lack of warning and any sort of error report after.

The message app was the default one supplied and the "delete old messages" setting was unticked. I can't quite believe this issue has been so long standing.

Deleted once again. Maybe the 10th or 15th time by now. I have had my phone for a bit over a year. It's happened stock, from when I got my phone, to stock 2.2, rooted, unrooted, stock app, non stock app whatever. No version has changed it. With this, and the bug accidentally sending to the wrong person I don't plan on buying another Droid.

Moto Droid (yeah, the old one). I didn't even know this was an issue... until tonight. My txt msgs have been collecting for almost two years. Thought they were safe. Didn't know they weren't backed up. Refer back to them all the time for work. Tonight, poof! One "Force Close" on the standard messaging app, and everything gone. And *thought* I could search the web and find out how to get them all back, but all I have found is a massive graveyard of despair over lost messages. Knowing I am not alone (by a long shot) is something, but it is not much solace. Very disappointed to find out I was just living on borrowed time for so long. And as a software developer, just from a software standpoint, how could those messages not be STORED SOMEWHERE ON MY PHONE that I can RECOVER when something like this happens????????????? WTF??

I have a Droid incredible this is the second time it has randomly deleted all of my text messages including my LOCKED messages. This is very upsetting! I only have the standard texting program that came with the phone. And it is NOT set to delete any on its own. Had phone for about a year and a half. I use a virus protection app and it is not infected. Very very upset with this! How long will Droid know about this problem and not fix it? Running LG Shine Plus, stock android, stock messaging app (didn't see a need for any other just to text until now).
ZDbox and JuiceDefender were running at the same time. Not sure what all else was running.
I had been texting earlier, left my phone for about an hour. When I went to send a new text I got messages a few times saying there was an error and that I had to force close. When the messaging app finally opened everything was gone.
Am trying to restore my messages right now but wavesecure seems to be having trouble doing so....

I have had this issue occur 3 times. First time was in December 2010 — less than 30 days after buying the phone. No clue what happened. But Best Buy just replaced the phone right off. Second time I think was in March 2011. Again, no clue what happened. Third time was August 19, 2011. Again, I did nothing unusual and they suddenly disappeared. Verizon told me that the text messaging program was crashing because I had too many text messages. However, I only had a total of 1500 or so — whereas some people might do 1500+ a month and so have 10,000 or so. The only unusual thing that I noticed in the weeks before they deleted was that sometimes if I selected one conversation, the program would open a different conversation, which can be annoying. Promptly after the third time occurred, the phone did its own factory reset :-( and I lost a whole lot of stuff which is apparently not recoverable because the Droid Incredible's factory setting is to save photos to the phone memory instead of the SD card (which is where Verizon kept telling me the photos were already stored). Verizon has now given me a replacement.

WHY still use SMS when one can use jabber? [XMPP]

It is as many buttons to mash from start to send to communicate via SMS app or jabber app. Jabber runs atop already purchased internets.

SMS is a syphilitic, arcane technology. Let it die.

boo. lost all my messages last night. default settings all around.

I also noticed earlier in the day that when I went to do a google search on the phone, it was not finding anything. so i thought, hm, how about i just search for "car" and that too found nothing. so i forced shut the search app and restarted it and then was able to search.

then noticed later in the day some activity on my phone when i was not touching it. i'd be looking at my main screen, then it would slide right or left onto other screens and it would also move from icon to icon on the screens.

it all ended with the deletion of all my text messages. htc incredible.

I've had my HTC Desire for over a year and had no problems at all, until recently.

A few weeks ago, all my SMS got deleted, luckily I had a full ROM backup. Since then, within a day or so of restoring the backed up SMS, they are all gone again.

It even happens before I've had a chance to restore, so it does not appear to be caused by the number of SMS.

I'm using the HTC standard messaging app and I don't see any Force Close or other errors. The only way you know (apart from opening the SMS app after it happened) is if you're using the device when it's wiping, it becomes noticably sluggish as the SQLite database is getting purged.

This is seriously annoying and really does need fixing.

I have had an HTC Merge for a little over a month.

SMS messages disappear even before I can read them. It happened infrequently when I first had my phone, but now more messages are lost than able to be read.

Also, when I send messages, most fail now.

THIS IS HORRIBLE and it's a shame that it's been reported as an issue for over a year now with no fix.

This happened to me about a month ago. During the day, so phone not on charge or in use, just sitting on the table minding it's own business. I look at it and I see I have a text, I go to read it and realise that this is the only message in the list - everything else had gone.

Checked all my settings and nothing that would cause the phone to do this. I uninstalled any recent apps just in case. Then just over a week ago it happened again.

This is a really big problem - so why isn't Android finding a fix?

I've gone to Verizon so many times to see if they have anything for it - they keep telling me its different aps (no, its not). went to bed last night, had all my texts, went to re-read one this morning, they are all gone. this has happened numerous numerous times (at least a dozen) on my HTC Incredible. Happening on other droid phones as well? Another weird one that happened for the first time earlier this month was that I couldn't see any texts in "All Messages" but they would show up in "SMS/MMS" folder. still on froyo (2.2)

this is obviously not a new problem nor an isolated problem; android should really be looking into how to fix this. i'm going to download a backup ap but i shouldn't have to.

All of my messages got deleted last night! My phone reset and they were gone! I had many contacts and important messages...now all gone. What if I was in a court case using a text message as evidence? What if I only had a contact information from an important contact (company)? I wouldn't get hired? I would lose my case?

Could I press charges to google for not properly storing my messages, offering a default backup option or generally addressing a serious issue that has been going on for so long? This is completely unacceptable.

I haven't had this happen to me until yesterday. I've recently signed in HTC Sync with Facebook and I've noticed without my approval and I can't turn this feature off now, that HTC Sync Facebook is linking profile information with contacts, auto assigning pictures and all of that. This may be associated with the problem:

-I never had the problem of deleted messages before and NEVER assigned images to any contacts.

-Once images were assigned, having a large message chain with the 2 or more image thumbnails repeated (1000x) over and over it may overflow the memory in some way.

All of my messages got lost last night. Xperia X8 with the latest update 2.2.
The phone run out of battery and when i plugged it in the messaging application instantly crashed. After that receiving new messages i couldn't view them. If i wanted to delete them the application crashed again. Any other messages disappeared.

In addition, now every time that i turn off and turn on the phone the application doesn't crash but there is sound of me receiving a new message. The sound occurs when i turn off the phone and when i turn it on again.

Currently when i receive new messages i cant view them nor delete them.

I use only the default application for messaging.

I also tried doing a hard reset removing the battery while the phone was on but still old messages dont appear and new ones dont open.

Dataloss bugs must have TOP priority, if google does not understand this then the job has not been done. Android is still an unstable and unreliable product, and newer version are getting worse. Too much focus on UI polishing, very little in bug-fixing and key functionality, like undo support, and too much frequent battery drain problems. Not the way to go google... move up!

Brief Summary:
All texts unexpectedly deleted.
Steps to replicate:
Tap power button to take phone out of standby.
Enter unlock code (correctly, first time)
Open native messages app from home screen shortcut.
Last viewed thread opens
Use phones back button to go to conversations list.
What happened:
All texts (1000+) over 50+ conversations are missing.
Exited app and reopened. Texts still missing.
Switched phone off and back on. Opened native messaging app. All texts still missing.
No problems with messages sent or received since (approx 4 hours ago)
What I expected to happen instead:
Texts should not be deleted until I choose to delete them, either by deleting them individually, by deleting a whole conversation, or by having 'delete old messages' checked.
I don't have this setting checked, and never have. All messages have gone including new and locked messages.

Why is the status of this bug 'NeedsInfo'? Needs info usually means no action will be taken until info is obtained, so this is essentially parked indefinitely.
What info is required? I'll be happy to provide any further info as required.

Speaking as a software developer, irretrievable data loss bugs should, as marantz...@gmail.com pointed out, be highest priority.
I'm pretty disgusted that this thread has been open for approx 2 years and still no resolution. Google should go public about such a huge data loss bug. Because if they had, I would have chosen to take the battery life hit for an SMS backup utility. As it is, I'm seriously considering switching to a Windows phone. Up until now I've really been an advocate for Android phones since I got in on the first UK release of the G1, but sadly no longer...

HTC Desire here. Same issue, very annoying indeed. My first thought was this: "What bothers me most? i) the fact that all my message history is gone? or ii) the realization that I do not know how this happened? I concluded ii and went online to search for an answer & baffled beyond a quick recovery to find this thread. It resolved my main concern: Regardless of an absent (and long overdue response from supplier), I realize that I may have to ditch both the phone and the platform. Like so many have already concluded: This is a flaw entirely unacceptable. Perhaps I too will have to bite the monopoly apple? Or just revert to something less smart than a smartphone?

Just lost 2 years of messages overnight - texting just before bed, gone when I got up. No SMS Backup. Talked to Verizon - no chance of recovery. As if the sub-standard app market and lousy interface weren't enough, this will be the app that broke the Android back for me. Taking a bite of the apple this weekend.

I then sent her a text asking if she sent me a text as i never got it since my phone deleted them all and she said yeah and sent me the message again.

This just happened to me for the first time since I got my Droid (classic). Received a text, noticed it was the only one in the thread so I tapped back to the Messages screen to find ALL of my threads gone. Auto-delete is unchecked. Incredibly frustrating, and even more so to find out that this has been a known issue for over 2 years now.

This happened to me yesterday. As with all others here, my phone was sitting unused, in a quiet state, on the dining room table. I picked it up to just check for any new texts, emails, etc, and when I opened the Droid text screen, there were no messages. None. ALL Personal and ALL BUSINESS texts were gone. Every text that I had chosen to save from over the past two years.

This is one more reason why APPLE iPHONE will win, and Droid will continue to be the choice of only kids and other people who don't really care about reliability and security of their data.

It is also why I am tossing the piece of crap Google Droid when my 2 year contract is up next month. It is time to grow up and get an Apple.

GOODBYE DROID FOREVER. YOU SUCK AND YOUR PROGRAMMERS ARE LAZY.

Agreed with Mumbles and all of you here:

DROID is done. It was a nicee experiment, but it isn't a good solution if you need reliable and safe data.

This has happened twice to my HTC Droid Incredible. The failure of Google to address this bug, or even to acknowledge, warn of or apologize for its existence, is appalling. No one claims responsibility or supplies a solution. The end user, caught unaware, must find his own 3rd party solution after getting screwed the first time and diagnosing the issue himself with help from forums like this. When my phone contract comes up for renewal, I will be switching to an iPhone.

I could not find the thread for Android 2.2 sms bugs, so I am posting here.

I have a ZTE v821 with android 2.2
SMS messages and sms threads are bugged when I choose to delete them.
They do not disappear, keeping listed in my sms inbox, instead. The deleted messages become empty and date is modified to December 31, 1969.
Checked if messages are still occupying data space on phone or micro SD card, but still not sure. still, sms inbox is polluted with empty messages from 1969 !! not nice.

is there a solution ?

Hardware version: I500.04
Model number: SCH-I500
Firmware version: 2.3.5
Kernel version 2.6.35.7

I have my phone set to save upwards of 5k messages on each thread, a setting which I changed/set recently (around April 8th 2012).

I went to open a message earlier this evening and the phone auto-locked. When I unlocked it there were no text messages ("No Conversations" according to phone.) All locked texts were also removed. My phone is not set to auto-delete at the moment.

Normally I would end the post here, but I figured I should mention the following:

I have the "SMS Backup and Restore" app installed and I used it to try restoring my texts, since I had backed up on the 21st. It successfully restored them, and afterwards, my messaging app would not open. Pressing the icon would cause the messaging app to hang (screen goes black, but home/settings/back/search are still lit), and despite force closing, RAM clearing, advanced-task-killer ending, I was forced to pull the battery. I seemed to have no way to "undo" the restoration that caused the application to completely fail.

Fast forward a few hours that I had it off and on the charger, I powered it on and the texts from the 21st and beforehand are there, thanks to the backup app (which I have now supplemented with an auto-backup to Gmail every 30 minutes a la SMS Backup+). I appear to be able to send and receive, (or I "was" about 20 minutes ago, not sure since) but the touch screen stops working when trying to switch between threads. I have to task manager --> "end" messaging in order to look at another thread.

I was unable to really send or receive for a span of six hours or so, and had some messages I hadn't backed up which I truly wanted to save. My case isn't as serious as some people in this thread (e.g. losing evidence for a court case or important business information) but I still would have preferred not losing my messages and being unable to text. I realize Google does not control compatibility of their messaging application with backup apps, so perhaps the SMS Backup and Restore app didn't help, but I truly am at a loss of words at how inconvenient this experience was, and unstable Android has been as long as I've had this phone. I truly hope that since a few thousand customers have had this problem which has been occurring for two years that a long term solution can be prioritized.

Thank you for your concern.

This just happened to me! I lost all my SMS/MMS messages. I have NEVER had a phone delete all my messages unless I told it to. This is ridiculous. I've had this phone for about a year and this has never happened. I had about 800 text/photo messages on my phone.

I have an original Droid 1 running 2.2.1. Is there no way to get the messages back? I tried to reboot the phone but that didn't help. This is unbelievable and makes me want to get an iphone (or go back to my old phone).

wicked over two years on and nothing has been done! Just lost all my text messages this morning including the one telling me an address I'm suppose to be going to this afternoon.

Happens everyday. I use HTC Sensation XE with ICS (4.0.3). I would receive a message, and then reply (using Droid Notify) all looks OK. But when I check on my messages, from the stock messaging app, everything is gone. When I restart I would see all the messages, except for the last that I receive, and my reply. I have to restart my phone everyday, and with the ICS upgrade, a restart usually takes up to 3 to 5 minutes.

This just happen to me on HTC Desire with Froyo 2.2

Had the phone for 2 years without issue and have just come out of contract - might have to go to the dark side, rather than stick with Android.

Can't believe it's nearly 3 years since this was first reported and is still an issue in ICS (re: post 1351).

#1353 bigma...@gmail.com
I have lost ALL messages SEVERAL TIMES on my MyTouch 4G.

I have had it for almost 2 years (Oct 2012 contract is up and I'll be switching)

Extremely frustrating. At first I thought it was related to HandCent - which I downloaded and loved. Then one day, my phone threw a Force Close error for Android.Messages.something-or-other and when I clicked on the HandCent icon, all my conversations were gone. More importantly, all the pictures that were shared were just GONE.

I thought it might have been the App, so I removed and and have been using the stock message app for the MyTouch 4G which...as we all know is painfully bland when compared to HandCent or iPhone Messaging. That solved nothing for me and the issue continued - my messages (all of them) were randomly deleted.

Anyways - it just happened to me for the 8th time this morning. I have only a handful of apps installed, no antivirus or battery monitors or task killers or the like. My apps are:
Adobe Flash 11.1
ADW.Launcher (messages were deleted with and without this app installed)
Amazon MP3 (installed by default)
Amazon App Store (messages were deleted with and without this app)
B&N Nook
Baby ESP
BabyBump Pro
Barcode Scanner
CamScanner
Ichi (simple game)
KeyChord
Knots 3d
Pandora
Router Aqua
Skype:
T-Mobile Mall
Tabs Tools
Unolingo
White Noise Lite

I am at a loss for a few things. 1.) I cannot believe that there hasn't been more uproar over this issue. Randomly losing ALL TEXT MESSAGES is a huge bug.

1.) There has been no fix. I have friends on 3.0 and 4.0 that have experienced this same issue - all their messages get deleted. One thinks it happens when he takes it out of Airplane mode. The other has no idea and doesn't understand how it can be its own 'Activity' that some how just crashes itself.

I consider Text Messaging to be of equal importance to Calling. The MyTouch 4G and Android have left a very bad taste in my mouth because of the many conversations that I no longer have - through no fault (and choice) of my own. This even happened after I reset my phone completely and just used 0 apps (what's the point of a smartphone then?).

I never had an issue with text messages until I switched to my droid "Smart Phone." My previous "regular phone" kept messages for YEARS and was only limited by internal memory. Sadly, as I said, this has lead me to the decision to switch things up and ditch my unreliable droid. Hopefully, taking the time to post will help others.

Just happened on my Motorola Flipout (MotoMB511), one year old, running on Android 2.1 (no version update available for this phone..). Living in France, subscribed to VirginMobile.

I lost all my conversations. They were set on auto delete if exceeding 200 messages, so I probably had over 5000 messages, some of them containing very important info.
And that is only one of the many bugs that I've been encountering with this phone, this one was just too frustrating to remain unnotified. Please do something for your consumers, this kind of issues deeply affects and handicaps us all.

just happened to me too: i was replying to a text, the program crashed, and all messages are gone. this is unreal. if they are not able to fix this, they should at least:

2) integrate an automatic backup function to at least let you recover the messages that got deleted.
