Reported by jbq@google.com, Sep 20, 2009
This issue is a generic issue to track the list of known bluetooth issues
between Android 1.5 and car systems.

In the following list, the first column indicates which issue/comment a
partical car was originally reported at. The second column indicates
whether this case is a regression in 1.5 (i.e. a car that used to work with
1.1 but failed with 1.5). The third column is the actual car model.

If you have a car that is not on this list, please leave a comment so that
we can try to get the list to be as precise and comprehensive as possible.

I don't know if it is just the same problem as Vauxhall Zafira w/ CD70, but I have a
Opel Vectra 2006 w/ CD70 and connection seems to work fine first but disconnects
after some seconds. I worked out that the problem does not exist just after a factory
reset. Then, the connection is working until I do the very first google contact sync
- even with an empty contact list (see
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2582#c82).
Comment 24 by carlosadsuara, Sep 21, 2009
I don't know if this information will provide any help to the developer but I have
changed the file /etc/bluez/audio.conf in order to include the option "Master=False"
on the android device.
In this way the connection and sincronization is always done correctly, otherwise the
car doesn't mute the radio.
Despite of this change I can NOT hear the phone through the car speakers.
My car is a Peugeot 407 from 2007 (already on the list) and the phone is a HTC Magic
(Vodafone)
Comment 25 by prscott1, Sep 21, 2009
I can provide a logcat of what happens if developer wishes. I have the 2005 BMW X3
(and a 2006 BMW X5) - the phone pairs and connects with the cars, but as soon as
the "phonebook loading" which is initiated by the car starts, it kills the gprs
radio/process on the phone and then kills phone process (both actions seen in the
logcat) - then bluetooth disconnects. It will cycle like this a few times and then
updates the secure table found in
the '/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db' with a value
= '0' for my car device.
Comment 32 by jbq@google.com, Sep 21, 2009
One aspect that we found to be important was the country where you bought the car -
some car manufacturers use different suppliers for their radio systems in different
countries, and we've seen some situations where bugs only appear when communicating
with the EU versions of a car, but not with the US versions that we could get our
hands on.

Also, somewhat obviously, any specific options you might have in the car related to
the audio system (navigation, in-dash CD changer, video system) might also be
relevant, so details about those would also help us build a precise list of what
specific cars have issues.

Thanks for your patience and cooperation.

The 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe mentioned in 2647#16 was purchased in the US with the
Technology Package, that is: factory installed in-dash navigation system, Bose stereo
system and Bluetooth. I do not know how this compares to non-tech package Altimas.

bluetooth handsfree from factory. It has also got a plugin adapter for a mobile phone
between the two front seats.

My Ford Focus, which I bought in April this year (new), came with a Blaupunkt
TravelPilot FX (5" display version) multi-media centre installed. The only problem I
could find is that the names of the contacts do not show up. Calling and being called
is possible.

My Peugeot 308 is a 2007 UK model, with factory stereo and BT unit. Only used a 1.5 handset (HTC
Magic) which has never worked with the handsfree kit.
Comment 52 by mmau...@googlemail.com, Sep 22, 2009
Toyota Yaris Sol S 2009, bought in Germany: the built-in handsfree can only receive
contacts via OPP (Object Push Profile) Ver. 1.1, according to the car manual.

UK version of Sony MEX-BT2700, Problems are much reduced when WiFi is disabled. 98%
of the time audio wont connect if WiFi is enabled. Is almost flawless without WiFi on.

Comment 56 by virtualmage, Sep 27, 2009
Until google start to take the problem seriously i doubt it...here a quick fix,but
you need to be able to pair once properly, soon its connected click on the new profile
the phone just created and go under option then deactivate media. It will only work if
you manage to connect once,at least the hand free work that way.Second solution ,root
your phone, void you warranty, and start wondering why some kids in their basement have
better knowledge about android then the developer ....
Comment 57 by contact.cutler, Sep 28, 2009
Mercedes C320 (2007 onwards) with inbuilt Bluetooth.

Never had a phone this car doesn't work perfectly with - till now!

Hero running latest official HTC 1.5 rom (Sept 09), will only route audio if I make a
call. If I receive a call, the audio stays on the handset.

This is a major frustration.

After this frustration add lack of OBEX SIM Access and File Transfer...
Comment 59 by John...@SKY.com, Oct 02, 2009
I am having this problem in my 06 BMW 535D and would really like a solution to this.

Is this resolved in 1.6?

The phone pairs with the car but will not connect at all. This is a major issue for
me and many other people by the looks of searching on google, ironically....

Comment 60 by circuitjt, Oct 03, 2009
Disappointed today, got the 1.6 update (DRC83) and the G1 still doesn't work with
2007 US market Nissan Altima and 350Z. Deleted and re-paired. Can initiate and
answer calls but all audio is still through the handset...
Comment 75 by drestivo, Oct 05, 2009
Infiniti 2007 G35X w/built-in Bluetooth
T-Mobile G1 with 1.6 OTA installed

Bluetooth STILL BROKEN after installing 1.6 OTA update.!

Not impressed with the development team after this. This WAS A WORKING FEATURE BEFORE
they rolled out 1.5! And they didn't fix it in 1.6!! Cripes, come on android team.

Development team: simple question: are you fixing this or not? I think we deserve an
answer after 1.6 failed to deliver.

Comment 76 by John...@SKY.com, Oct 05, 2009
My car is a UK spec BMW 535D Touring M Sport with Professional SatNav and my HTC
Hero will pair with the car no problem but never connects, just tells me that an
error has occured.

My previous phone Sony Ericsson K750i worked fine as does my wifes Samsung mobile,
so the fault definately lies with the Android phone. Like many many others, I need
this fixed ASAP.
Comment 77 by maymoon1987, Oct 05, 2009
respond to #56,

i dont have warranty on my phone can you solve this issue by rooting the phone?
Comment 78 by AndrewRChick, Oct 05, 2009
FYI:

I emailed Mazda about the lack of audio via bluetooth (in the 2010 Mazda 3). This
was there response:

"Thank you for contacting us in regards to your HandsFree system and the Streaming
Audio feature.

Unfortunately, although your vehicle supports the Streaming Audio feature, the HTC G1
does not. At this time we have not been made aware of any changes to the software of
the phone that would make this feature compatible. Likewise, there are no software or
firmware upgrades available for the HandsFree system. We apologize for any
inconvenience.

The HandsFreeLink system utilizes both the A2DP and AVRCP profiles to play music
through the audio speakers and control the music through the radio buttons. If a
phone does not function well for both of these Bluetooth profiles or has poor audio
quality, it will not be approved for the Streaming Audio feature

I have a 2008 BMW M3 Saloon (E90)
Bluetooth connectivity works fine except I never see CLI when I receive calls.
Address book is fine
Audio is fantastic, great clarity both for me as well as those I'm talking to.
I'm using a vanilla HTC Hero bought on UK launch (so running 1.5/Cupcake)

I JUST UPDATED TO 1.6!!! AND ON MY AFTER MARKET STEREO I WAS ABLE TO PAIR AND HEAR
THE CALL!!!!!
Comment 82 by combinedeffort.com, Oct 06, 2009
#81. Yeah, but you still have to shout to make yourself heard ;)
Comment 83 by John...@SKY.com, Oct 07, 2009
I have updated my phone build (UK HTC HERO unlocked) to the 2.73.405.5 from the HTC
website and it is now working fine with my car, BMW 535D Touring M-Sport 2006.

The address book has synced across and I have been able to make a call using the
extended voice controls in car.

The car has Logic 7 if this is of any use?

The phone had the stock build 1.something on it so was somewhat out of date. I am
still running Android Firmware version 1.5 on the handset.

Comment 86 by microants77, Oct 08, 2009
Able to pair, but never able to connect after pairing... Seems to disable the car's
bluetooth, cause when I click on the phone key on steering wheel, nothing happens
(i.e. no beep that you normally get).
Comment 87 by pcting, Oct 08, 2009
I own a HTC Dream / Android Dev 1 Phone. In general, pairing with my 2010 Prius
system as a phone works great, except for a few things:

- Contacts won't transfer over to the car's phonebook.
- Pairing my Dev1 in phone and mediaplayer mode simultaneously stops working after
the initial pairing. Once you disconnect, you will no longer be able to reconnect
again until you start over by unpairing the device on both the phone and the Prius.

I'm running JF1.5.1 firmware.
Comment 88 by kaufmann.scott, Oct 08, 2009
I have 2008 Infiniti G37. Using TMobile MyTouch. I got the software update 2 days ago
and installed it. I paired the phone and it's still having the same issue as before. It
pairs, but when you make the call it sounds like the person on the other end is under
water, and they can't hear you at all.
Comment 89 by sc1scotty, Oct 08, 2009
I've been told by Team Android the bluetooth issue can not be duplicated with
vehicles they have tested. I've tried my G1 on two G model Infiniti's with the same
result on both. No audio passed unless the BT connection is made after the phone
call is initiated.

As anyone see proper communication success with doing a "work around" a
Nissan/Infiniti paired to a 1.5 or 1.6 phone?
Comment 90 by theanswriz42, Oct 08, 2009
sc1scotty - I'm not in the IRC channel at the moment but I'd find it incredibly
unlikely they can't duplicate the problem (or they simply haven't tried). Afterall,
it'd be a bit asinine to suggest that the 119 tickets referenced in this one aren't
legit.

Once again, I'll extend an open invitation that if anyone from the Android team would
like to come to one of the offices here in Atlanta to test, I'll let them do so on my
BMW 335i.

Comment 91 by kaufmann.scott, Oct 08, 2009
I went to the TMobile store, and brought the girl out to my car to see if the phone
would pair correctly on my phone, then on their store demo. Both had the same issue
that you can't correctly hear the person on the other end, and they can't hear you at
all. I then demonstrated that the car worked fine by using my Samsung behold to make a
bluetooth call. So it definitely does not work with the Infiniti g37's, at least for
model year 2008. And that is after the 1.6 update.
Comment 92 by sc1scotty, Oct 08, 2009
Here is my most recent email and reply:

Me....

More than 3 months have passed since the 1.5 push killed the functionality of BT
operations listed in issue 3960.
>
> No indication from team Android has been given to the customers that indicate this
is fixable. When I did receive a response, it was negative. "We can not duplicate
the problem"... That's not a reasonable answer considering the long list of people
and vehicles noted. Reading between the lines might lead one to believe. "If we
don't look, we won't see a problem".
>
> Update 1.6 obviously did not address the issue. So does the customer keep hold our
breath waiting for a fix that my never come, or that team Android considerers the
issue too small to warrant man hours?
>
> The hackers seem to have found a solution. I would love to get a REPLY from team
Android with some honest/truthful information before considering my options. Hold
out for a fix, Root the phone, switch to another device. In this case, no news is
not good news.

Thanks for the feedback :)

We've really seen quite a few situations where someone would report an issue with a
specific model, where we'd find a Google employee in Mountain View with a car that'd
fit that exact description, and where things would work fine here. This has been the
case with both BMW and Nissan/Infiniti models. Obviously we can't do that with
Peugeot/Citroen cars since they're not sold in the US.

I have no visibility over the current technical status of this issue.
I really don't. So far the "hacker" solution I've read about seemed like a band-aid
more than a fix. I'd love to see actual fixes coming from the Open-Source community,
but so far it doesn't seem like anybody has had both the conditions to reproduce
this issue and the skills and willingness to debug it.
Comment 93 by sc1scotty, Oct 08, 2009
Called Google. You can not speak to anyone regarding Android.

I've emailed HTC with my concerns.

I'm going to call T-Mobile and ask for a replacement device (blackberry or other)
and/or script cancellation.
Comment 94 by John...@SKY.com, Oct 08, 2009
Guys, what build number are you running on your HTC Hero/G2 devices?

I have got a uk spec unlocked HTC Hero that I have owned for a month, the stock
build was 1.something and the latest version on the HTC Website is 2.73.

I flashed the phone which did not change the Android version, but upgraded the build
number and now my phone pairs and connects with the car. Might not be the same for
network locked phones, but I thought it worth mentioning.

Car is BMW 535D Touring M Sport with Pro SatNav and Logic 7 2006 UK Spec.
Comment 95 by microants77, Oct 08, 2009
From the About Phone Screen:

Model Number: T-Mobile myTouch 3G
Firmware Version: 1.6
Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17U_2.22.19.26I
Kernel Version:2.6.29-00479-g3c7df37 andriod-build@apa26 #19
Build Number: DRC92

BTW, what the heck is Baseband?

Comment 96 by John...@SKY.com, Oct 08, 2009
As mentioned I do not know if this is any use but my versions are:

Model number: HTC Hero
Firmware Version: 1.5
Baseband Version: 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18
Kernel Version: 2.6.27-8dd6deee HTC-Kernal@and18-2 )
Build Number: 2.73.405.5 146733 CL#61267 release-keys
Software Version: 1.0.0.A6288

This setup works with my BMW 535D after being flashed to the above build number from
a 1.something build number. Before it would pair but nevever connect, now it
connects and have transferred over the address book and let me send and receive
calls over BT, including using extended voice commands.

@Google, it might be worth you posting which versions you are using so people can
see if there are any descrepancies between your phones which work with their car
model and their own handsets that don't work with the same make/mode vehicle.
Comment 97 by sc1scotty, Oct 08, 2009
John... Your kernel is HTC created.
Mine... Android in the States.
Build and version same as Microants above.

John, Also.. You never mention if your device did not work with your
car BT prior to the flash?

T-Mo is calling me back this afternoon to talk about switching my device to a BB.
Comment 98 by John...@SKY.com, Oct 08, 2009
@sc1scotty, before the flash upgrade my device would only pair but never connect
with the car.

My phone is running Android 1.5 which is was running before the flash so for me
changing the Build number fixed the issue using the same version of the Android OS,
1.5, which ties in with google saying that they have been unable to reproduce this
using their handsets.

Do you have a T-Mobile G2 Touch? In other words a phone that requires a T-Mobile
custom ROM, with their branding etc? In which case it may something in the service
providers implmentation that that preventing it from working.

Does anyone with an unlocked handset have this issue or is it primarily an issue
with locked handsets?

still no connections in 2007 nissan sentra with G1. phone will pair correctly but the audio
still does not route through the car speakers. cmon guys this cant be that difficult to fix. I
really dont want to have to switch to an iphone. I really want to believe in android.

I will be uploading a video demonstrating how this DOES NOT WORK!!. maybe its time to
hack the phone and let some genius fix it
Comment 100 by sc1scotty, Oct 08, 2009
John, I have a G1 via T-mobile. I am now running 1.6 as of the push within this past
week. Nothing changed with the issue and symptoms when the phone went from 1.5 to
1.6.

Phone and car connect and operate as expected with the exception of the lack of audio
transfer to/from the phone to the car. If a call comes in the car recognizes it,
turns down the stereo and info on the cars display. I can except the call on the
steering wheel then I have to pick the phone up and talk and listen.

On the rare occasion get into the car while already involved in a phone conversation,
turn the car on, allow the car and phone to sync. The audio is flawlessly passed from
phone to car "as advertised". So bluetooth pairing during an active call is the only
way to transfer the send/receive audio to car BT.

G1, or MyTouch (G2) have the same symptoms due to running the same Android OS. Two
phones and G model (35/37) Infiniti's produced the same results.

i have used the method on Comment 47 by rosscartlidge, and it worked on my htc magic.
changed audio.conf like this
[General]
Enable=
Disable=Headset,Gateway,Source,Control,Sink

Phone is HTC magic Vodafone UK
Car is BMW 520d 2006 uk model

My phone is rooted, no custom rom added. Just rooted to be able to change the file.
EVRYTHING works, pairs, connects, can answer call from steering wheel, end call, use
the onboard screen to see my contacts, call a numbers from them, see my last calls etc.
Before rooting i had problems as mentioned before,I answer the call and cannot hear
anything from car speakers, although is paired and connected and also pressing the
button on the steering wheel did not end the call. Also dropped/lost the bluetooth
connection.

I wonder why google doesn't release a program with authorization to change the
audio.conf file, so people having problems can try the method i have mentioned
without getting into the hassle of root.

Comment 107 by harisdotdot, Oct 10, 2009
your phone must be rooted
there is a file in /etc/bluez/audio.conf
copy that to your pc.Change the lines
from
-----------------------------
Enable=Source,Control,Sink
Disable=Headset,Gateway
-----------------------------

to
-----------------------------
Enable=
Disable=Headset,Gateway,Source,Control,Sink
-------------------------------------------

save it.
copy the changed file back to /etc/bluez/

Thats it.
There is a tool to help you pull and push files (carefull)from
http://code.google.com/p/adb-file-explorer/
If you have root, click the button on top right that says [Remount]
Hover over each button to see what it does. I also have the sdk from google
installed.

The address book problem of not sending the contacts names to the Ford Mondeo system

phone loses the connection after a short while (approx. 15-20 seconds), then it
connects again automatically after a few seconds and loses the connection again. So
if a call comes in while the phone is connected, i can use the car-system to speak,
but if the call comes in while the phone's not connected, the automatic connection
does not work any more. Maybe this input can help the developers.

I have a 2010 Mazda CX9 with the Bose Nav system and the bluetooth works fine with making and
receiving calls. The caller sounds great and they say they can hear me just fine. The bluetooth audio
connects and even though it cannot pick up track info (I may have tagged my mp3s incorrectly) it can
still pause, play, skip songs fine in the music player. The big proble is that no sound comes out the
speakers. The phone shows it is connected via bluetooth audio when changing volume and the settings
show its paired and connected to both phone and media. I tested youtube vids and still no sound.

I have a Moto Cliq with 1.5
- addtl prob, it doesn't connect automatically when in range but not a big hassle.

I also tested on my G1 with Cyan 4.2.2
- connects automatically when in range just fine

I haven't tested other file types or other media players yet (will test this later). I also haven't tested any
of the mentioned coding changes (which I can but won't help on my wifes phone which is more
important anyway but I don't plan to hack hers.... yet ;)

I haven't read thoroughly on everyone's suggestions yet but just wanted to throw this out there. I keep
thinking its a stupid hidden setting but I keep running into brick walls and I've stumped the dealer
dudes on this one.

Thanks all and if 2.0 fixes this, I can wait and will be totally stoked!

See issues 1181, 1414, and 3063. Glad to see this is a critical issue here. The
main problem in Android 2.0 and Droid is that the handfree green button long press
does not initiate the voice search. This problem exists on the phone as well as when
connected via bluetooth. The green button on the handsfree system works just like it
does on the phone itself. The problem appears to be with the phone software not
having a green button long press event.

2004 Acura TL and Android 2.0/Motorola Droid: Audio quality is almost unusable at the
non-Droid end of the call.
Lots of micro-dropouts occur throughout the call, making it incredibly difficult for
people I call to understand me. In addition, I have had frequent Hands-Free Link
drops down to the handset without any (or, rarely with) audible notification.
Sometimes, the call will return back up to the HFL system, but not always.

I have also had the exact same problems with my Jawbone II headset.

I have tested the audio quality problem myself a number of times by resetting the
Droid, and then initiating a call to my home or work voicemail. The audio quality has
always been terrible with every test call.

Motorola DROID. 2010 Acura TL with Navi. DROID and TL pair OK for phone use.
However, Bluetooth Audio pairs, but does not work. When I hit play on the DROIDS
media player to play a song, it seems to play, but no sound from the car stereo.
(although the car stereo properly indicates BT Audio selected and volume is way
up). If I adjust the volume on the DROID, the screen indicates 'bluetooth audio
volume' so that DROID does think it is paired. Upon further observation of the
media player controls, the song is actually in somewhat of a 'fast forward' mode
around 3x normal speed. If I hit the pause button on the Acura stereo, the DROID
media player pauses. If I hit the resume button on the Acura Radio, the DROID media
player resumes at the same 3x speed with no sound. I have tried various
combinations of pause/resume/fast forward/play on both the DROID and Acura without
any success.

I've got an HTC Hero running 1.5. My car is a 2008 BMW 335i (Canadian).

My hero pairs no problems and the phone contact list shows up perfectly. There are
only two issues I've got.

1) When I get an incoming call, the display simply shows **********, not the name or
phone number of the incoming call (worked fine w/Motorola Razr). Outbound works fine.

2) Once in a blue moon: I disable the bluetooth via widget. Next time I get a call,
the phone is convinced I'm still on bluetooth. There is no audio in the handset, and
hitting volume up/down shows that it is adjusting bluetooth volume. The BT is
certainly disabled, no icon displayed at the top. Only solution to power cycle the phone.

MULTIPLE issues with my Droid (still 2.0) and a 2005 BMW X5. Phone paired with X5
fine, but never has loaded, or even asked to load, my phonebook. The phone will not
automatically connect - sometimes it will if I do it manually, but yesterday it
stopped connecting at all. When it did connect, the caller's voice would go in and
out, with a rolling static-y buzz that was almost rhythmic coming through the
speaker. I was constantly having to ask them to repeat what they said. Add to all of
this the lack of voice dialing, and the phone is virtually USELESS as a hands-free
device. This is a HUGE deal - beyond convenience, it is a LEGAL and SAFETY problem.

I just cannot believe this phone won't work any better than this...

OK: got my Droid 2.0.1 update - it DID allow me to load my phonebook into my 2005
BMW X5, BUT THE PHONE STILL DOES NOT CONNECT unless I ask it to manually, and then
only connects one out of every 2 or 3 requests. And now the Bluetooth connection is
not clear - there are times when neither end can hear the other. Completely
unacceptable, this is too important to be asuch a virtually non-functioning feature.
STILL.

And, off-topic, I'll second that the new unlock is a huge step backward. Before, it
was a one-handed operation: I'm right-handed, and I could easily swipe using my
thumb on the hand holding the phone. Now it's pretty much a 2-handed operation. Who
thought this was important, much less an improvement, much much less even necessary
or desired???

Nice move, guys!

instead of bluetooth. Don't let me down android.

Just upgraded from 1.5 to 1.6, and the bluetooth is still not working with my 2007
BMW Z4. It worked with 1.1, but now I only get audio, no mic.

My Samsung Moment 1.6 will show paired but not connected with my 2009 Acura TL Tech Package. I
can manually connect it each time I get in the car, but it only works about 5-10 times before the car's
bluetooth address appears on the phone rather than HandsfreeLink. Once the address appears, I can
no longer manually connect the phone and need to restart it to be able to manually connect it again.

Won't auto connect between samsung moment and 2009 Acura TL Tech package. Requires manual
connection each time I get in the car.
