My bug was marked as a duplicate of this, so I want to add my request here, since it
is not present yet:
I'd like that special characters are skipped during the search (I don't know if
skipped is the ideal word, so I will make an example)
In my list there's a contact named: John "Arrow" Black
When I enter the word Black in the search, the contact is not displayed. If instead I
use "Black" it is displayed.

I have hundreds of customer contacts in my phone. I can't remember them all by name,
but if I want to call someone at say "Company X" I can't ! I have to remember the
contact's name. At the moment, this makes the contacts search ineffective for what I
need it for. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! Make it search any field. (even Zip code search
or city / suburb search)

I second the T9 dialing request.
I believe there are some 3rd party apps out there that will do this, But I think it's
pathetic to have to rely on a third party app to provide decent contact search on a
_phone_ developed by _google_. I mean come on - is that too much to expect?

I'm actually ready to sell my G1 dev phone with 1.5 loaded on it because the contact
search is so bad. My Palm TX has *much* better search and will find any text string
in any field of a contact record. It takes too many touches (each with a 1-3 second
pause) to even get to the point where I can enter the search text. On the TX it's two
presses: 1- phone list 2- search and then you enter the text string. On Android 1.5
it's 1- press phone button 2-contacts tab 3- menu button 4-search 5-tap in search
field to bring up keyboard 6- finally start entering search text. If I open or close
the keyboard, the app forces me back to step 2! and I have to repeat 3,4,5 all over
again. By the time I have done this 50 times in the day I'm ready to go back to a
"dumb phone" which is easier to use than this "smart phone"

this thread unfortunately started out on the wrong foot. We all hope for good things
and take a positive and helpful attitude. By playing around many of us figured out
just what the native search function would do, and have politely asked for
improvement. Google calls it "enhancement".
The search function is DEFECTIVE.
If you can, use your new android device for no more than 30 days, and if search
hasn't been REPAIRED, return your android and get a Palm, Windows, or Blackberry
device, or go back to your old device if it's still functional. There are other
defects in Android which are NOT being repaired, but you can BUY 3rd party
work-arounds. JUST SAY NO!

I'm Korean. I've been using Samsung phones for as long as I can remember before
switching to a N1. I'm usually not good with numbers so I tend to memorize the last
4 digits of a phone number. Samsung phones will pull up a list of partial matches as
you type in numbers via the dialpad. (Korean versions also let you search using just
the starting consonants of the names of your contacts but I digress) You can't do
this even in the dedicated search mode on the N1.
Like many people have pointed out, for a search oriented company, Contacts search
needs a LOT X 1000 of work. I can't believe how this could be less of a priority
than voice confirmation.

It is not an "enhancement" to be able to search contacts by company name. This is a
software defect that should be high on the list of priority fixes. Anyone using
their PDA phone for something other than social networking knows this. If I don't
receive notification of an imminent fix on this within my 30-day window, I will most
likely scrap the Droid and go move to a Blackberry or Palm phone.

We all need to get lots more people to star this topic AND REALLY RAISE HELL! (and
return their android toys if they still can) This is not a problem related to any
3rd party app, firmware, any phone manufacturer, any carrier, or anybody other than
Google. Even at this point, Google is the key party for Android's development and
application to phones and portable devices. Gmail, the calendar affiliated with the
users gmail account, and the contacts affiliated with the users gmail account are all
controlled by Google exclusively, as is the native "contacts" application integrated

Thank you, axeriano. That's the first piece of encouraging news I've seen on this
thread. It seems odd to me that it would still be the case that some fields are
searched and not others. Do you happen to know if it searches the _notes_ field?
Like others who have posted, I'm just looking for the same capabilities that my eight+
year old Tungsten C has. It searches all the data in the native apps, pretty quickly
too.

There are lots of new and cool features in the new Android 2.2. And the performance
is measurable better.
The phone feature however is disappointing. Google has hard programmed buttons for
launching the browser and phone app and the browser is working well. The phone app
however still miss T9 search functionality. The buttons appear with numbers and
letters, but you can not search into contacts, phone numbers or companies while you
are typing numbers or letters. You can use the search icon at the lower right to
launch search into your contacts, but you still can not search into phone numbers and
call log. Also, there is no specific way to view the call history of a certain
contact or to view call log for incoming, outgoing and missed calls separately.
That means, you still need another third party app to handle you calls.

the "search by notes in contacts" is a MUST!!!
HTC Sense on my stinkin'Fresh Desire phone surprised me how easily it could search a contact by any pattern of a name or address or phone# all under simple T9 dialer... but when it came to notes and companies - what a disappointment!!!
especially having that Gmail (that I use as my primary contatc repository lately) easily searches any fields and does it flawlessly...

I would like to point to an old product that answered almost all of the issues reported, and which has not been equaled in any phone product since: the contact search for Palm. All fields searched, with a dynamic filter as entry progresses, virtually instantaneous for large contact lists. This was accomplished on platforms with 10% of the horsepower of current hardware. Now that's software.

I came from a TREO 700P and went to a Palm Pre. Sad to say, the Pre does not have the ability to search all fields like the old palms. I have checked Android and Apple's iPhone. None of them do this. Apparently, the programmers of the phones are no longer required to use the phones in a practical business environment. VERY disappointing. I was hoping Android would save the day, but it looks like they all figure that if the iPhone doesn't have the feature, it's not needed. The only phones that still have this functionality are the Blackberry phones.

StarContact is a nice workaround effort, but Google being the biggest search entity on the planet.... Well, I had better search options on iPhone, so am disappointed.
The fix should include the option to do the voice call/search too, so please don't just fix a piece of the problem.
Also, I have seen conflicting reports as to whether 2.2 fixes this. If it does, and is now expected in August, I may be able to hold on, but business is business, and I need this basic capability.
Thanx for the efforts!

Eight years ago I had a Nokia which had the best contact search of any phone. As you start typing, it would display all contacts (in alpha order) that has the typed substring matched ANYWHERE in that contacts' fields--be it first name, last name, notes, phone number, email, company name, etc.
Since the samsung vibrant couldn't do this, it has a buggy contact search. This bug needs to be fixed in android. I hope google announces a patch for this. Having to download an app to workaround this bug is just that--a workaround; I should many in the software industry would object to that idea. It's like GM's Yukon giving only 10mpg, but it has a large trunk where you can carry a bicycle and use it often to improve your mileage. :)

This is weird. I enter doctors in my address book with Dr. in the firstname field so that I can find all doctors by searching on "Dr." - my NexusOne produces a random sampling of names that have "Dr" (no ".") in them, and excludes most of the doctors. I find it amazing that Google has not come up with a way to search all fields in the phone directory, especially company name, but I would also like to search the notes and addresses. An Android version of Google Desktop maybe? Another gripe I have is that it is impossible to read the street address if it is longer than can be displayed in the text field unless I open it in a Google map. This is really a bit silly, Google. I would like to have an option to have the contacts search work as the old nokias did: if I type "C", it only shows me the contacts that start with a C, not the ones that have a C (this second option requires me to type a lot of stuff to find a contact; I know lots of people here in Europe who preferred the old nokia style)
also, it would be nice to be able to add custom fields to any contact, with any name I want to use for that field on this contact

There is no question that searching contacts data (and, for that matter, all data on the phone) should be a basic functionality of any phone OS. I expected Android to excel at this... My Palm had better device search 10 years ago. Please fix!

Amen!
no...@gmail.com <no...@gmail.com> #173
The interesting thing here is that when creating a new text message and selecting a recipient the auto-search works just as requested by many of folks here. All that would be required is copying the functionality over to the dialer. Sadly, most of the Android devs have been moved to Google's "network snooping" division. Pay attention to your goddamn customers please.

Let me say: ANDROID SUCKS!!!!!!! I had a good ol' HTC Wizard with WM6.1 and after thinking and sharing the thought of changing the phone, a friend of mine recommended Android... So I bought an HTC Dream with CyanogenMod 2.2... I tested many applications and haven't found anything useful for me, and right now, I had to search for a contact, whom I remembered his street address only: "Lascano". After searching without success with the Contacts search function, and with the Google widget on the main desktop, I had to open Outlook on my desktop to look for the contact and find it.
After a Google search "android search for address in contacts", I found this thread. Come on!! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?!?!?
This is something MAJOR... can't understand from a company like Google, who gives so many good services...
I really like the Google Maps integration on Android, and it has a nice navigation system, but having to use a third party app to search for contacts properly is not convincing me.
I will most likely switch to an HTC Tilt 2, WM6.5. I know WM6.5 is about to die soon (and Windows Phone 7 will not run apps from 6.5 or below so it sucks), but I think it's still a great platform for both usability and productivity. And even that Google Maps hasn't good integration on Windows Mobile, it should be usable for my needs.
I will give it 15 days from now, and will monitor this thread just in case something pops out. If not: BYE BYE, Android!

Well, I need searching using dialpad. When I press "234" I want to see ALL contacts whose numbers contain "234" anywhere but also ALL contacts with strings "ADG", "ADH", "ADI" etc... This worked on Android 2.1 but does not work on higher versions. Searching using contacts is far less effective.

Amazing. My palm based devices had, what now seems ahead of its time, the abilty to search and show me all of the results from the entire device. All apps, native and installed.
I would get calendar, contact (the entire contact entry, notes, addresses, company, etc), third party appsd..they would all get searched. All matches would be shown.
It was awesome.
And I took it for granted that an Android based device would do the same, if not better.
Astounding that search on Android pales in comparison.
I hate when 'new' technology is a step backwards when it comes to features
Please, global search of android device.

It looks like this still hasn't been improved.
Also, the new UI has a different visual style and tends to use swipes/gestures instead of long-press + pop-up menu. Any of the 3rd party dialer/contacts apps are going to contrast greatly with the new UI, until developers start targeting API level 14 and making the style consistent.

If I'm right in my thinking, my Psion 3 had all-field search 20 years ago - so couldn't agree more with the posts above.
What IS the problem - surely it's not an OS issue, but just a matter of 'proper' coding?
And why the delay in getting it fixed? More of a Windows / Apple attitude - 'what do users know?' rather than the approach we'd expect from Google.
And why the lack of any acknowledgement / response from Google - what's the problem?!

This lack of functionality is beyond belief. I have WASTED so many hours trying to get this right. I thought I had found a workaround when I copied all my company data into the respective First Name fields. However, some of those contacts have somehow had their first name field automatically deleted. While the first name data is there, I can search and find using froyo with stock dialer. But eventually, the first name field gets deleted somehow and then the functionality is gone! Unbelievalbe! My only idea here is to always use the name of a person in the organization and then just correlate that particular business in your head with that particular name

In Android 4.0 the 'People' app and 'Dialer' app are separate now.
You CAN properly search every field (including Contact Group) from the People app, but not the Dialer app.
It seems that the real problem is that most people don't care for the separation of the two applications, and that the Contact/3rd menu in the dialer would function better as just a link to the People app, rather than continue as-is with its diminished functionality.

My DroidX has no 'people' app as of the latest Verizon (forced) update. There used to be two apps, but no longer! Also, as of this (gingerbread) release there is no way to delete contacts. You can delete them from the app (one at a time manually or with an app like Contact Remover), but they remain in memory forever. If you load external .vcf files often enough, you will fill all available memory and have to factory reset your phone.
It seems to me that Verizon points the finger at Motorola or Google and Google just thinks they're too big to listen. Shades of Apple. Too big to fail or Too big to listen?

Searching contacts via the "hardware search button" used to provide search results of names but after a recent update to Android 4.04
(Baseband version S:D710.10 S.FI27

I can no longer find names when searching with the hardware search button. Now I have to select:
Dialer | menu | all contacts | "search query"
Why is there a search button on the phone if it can't search the most important things in the phone?
For the love of god, QUIT REMOVING FEATURES IN UPDATES! If you can't make it work, don't release it. Everyone would rather wait until it works right. Have people forgotten that this is a PHONE and that the single most important thing that is does is to be able to organize contacts so I can actually contact them?
I don't care that it's been fixed in jellybean. I'm fucking irate that it used to work just fine, and then an update came along and provided no new noticeable features and completely knocked out the most basic level of the phone's interface. This is not an upgrade. An upgrade would ADD features, not remove them. And then there is no easy way to revert back after you realized google nuked your phone? Maybe Google wants to sell me a digital pocket contacts organizer? Get it together. At least try using your new update for a week or two and listen to the problems before releasing what is essentially malware.
