THIS SUCKS! I also updated my galaxy s3 recently to the latest ICS version and Android File Transfer stopped working. Tried setting my phone to camera mode, plugging and unplugging and still no response... GOOGLE... FIX IT!

#7 st...@rkbb.co.uk
Same problem. I'll watch the comments for a while and if any dev's need more detailed information let me know.
Possibly relevant: I do have 'Easy Phone Sync' and that connects fine. I'm not sure if I had that before or after the 4.0.4 update (the phone is new, just getting used to it).

Interim solution: airdroid app (thanks for the tip nablesla....)

Come on, Google, this problem has been going on at least since June. Time to fix it, don't you think?

It should be an easy fix, most likely a matter of recompiling the app against the latest version of the libmtp libraries. Alas, Android File Transfer is closed source, and nobody except Google people can do it...

Same problem here with Galaxy S3. Android File Transfer will not even recognize the GS3. I'm running Mountain Lion. Please fix this Google! Apple would never let this fly on the iPhone. Get our backs Google and we'll be loyal. Be buggy and we'll move on.
Sep 6, 2012
#22 ldave...@gmail.com
As regards smartphones, I'm afraid we're stuck between Apple (iOS) and Google (Android). Other OSes don't matter. And Apple is a pain. We've nowhere else to go.

As a former (jailbroken) iPhone owner having recently bought a Galaxy S3, I enjoy the relative freedom (although there are things I could do on my iPhone that are not possible on my S3), but I'm appalled by the general lack of stability of the platform (lots of minor bugs/glitches in the built-in apps), which mar the experience of using this otherwise wonderful phone...

The passivity of Google regarding Android File Transfer is just another symptom of the problem. We can't move on and they know it.

Some dapptrace(1m) output for both the daemon and the UI. Note the call going out for MTP with id 0x6860.

dapptrace.out
90.2 KB   View   Download
Sep 10, 2012
#44 ldave...@gmail.com
0x6860 is the USB Product ID for the Galaxy S3 and similar Samsung phones in MTP mode (for PTP mode, the Product ID is 0x6863). Android File Transfer seems to use an old version of the open-source libmtp library, which doesn't know about this value.

http://libmtp.sourceforge.net/

In my experience, the S3 under Android 4.0.3 would work (but, strangely, only in PTP mode, not MTP).But with the 4.0.4 update, transfer stopped working altogether.

Now, if only Google moved their fat, robotic **sses, downloaded the latest stable release of libmtp and recompiled AFT against it, we would all be happy campers by now. But apparently it's too much to ask... :-(
Sep 10, 2012
#45 ldave...@gmail.com
PS: another point in favour of Free Software: if Google released the source code, the problem would be solved in a matter of hours...
Sep 10, 2012
#46 jonathan...@gmail.com
PTP causes the phone to get recognised as an import source by iPhoto with 4.0.2 (Granted, no disks show up), but MTP has no effect. It does appear that this version of MTP has no idea about 0x6860 as a valid id.

Be nice if AFT was OpenSource at least and we could just recompile our own. And I notice you already said that too :)

#47 julie.pa...@gmail.com
Okay, this may not be the solution for EVERYone but it DID work for me. I have a samsung stratosphere, so this might only work for that device. I was getting a crash upon even clicking on the USB settings, so seemed something in my settings was corrupt, too. All kinds of fun after that update!

I was reading up on if there was a way to get the previous version before the upgrade & someone was talking about clearing data from some applications. I cleared the data in my settings & since then, I can now connect like the old days. The only thing I notice that changes is I lose my wallpaper settings & today I cannot change it from the factory default. I also need to clear the settings data after my phone restarts, so while not ideal, it works. It is working with any old cord, so does not need to be OEM.

This advice given at your own risk, I am not entirely sure all what is stored in the settings data.

so: Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All (in top menu) > (scroll forever to find) Settings > Clear Data > OK

Interesting comment in the header file here:

 367   /*
 368 * This entry (device 0x6860) seems to be used on a *lot* of Samsung
 369 * Android (gingerbread, 2.3) phones. It is *not* the Android MTP stack
 370 * but an internal Samsung stack.
 371    *
 372    * Popular devices: Galaxy S2 and S3.
 373    *
 374 * - It seems that some PTP commands are broken.
 375 * - Devices seem to have a connection timeout, the session must be
 376 * open in about 3 seconds since the device is plugged in, after
 377 * that time it will not respond. Thus GUI programs work fine.

I downloaded a free trial of wordershare mobile go for android pro for mac and it worked!!! i can manage my contacts, pics, music, videos, etc. its pretty easy to setup and use, plus it has pdf user guide. The big downside of all is that its only a 14 day free trial, if i wanna buy it id have to spit put $40 :(... PC version is free :S.

Anyway, thats a solution that worked for me. I have a samsung galaxy s3 (latest ics update) and a macbook pro running Lion.

Oh, and the phone has to be in PTP mode for the sync up to work.

Hope it works for you guys too!

Just bought a brand new Samsung Galaxy Nexus (unlocked) running 4.1.1 trying to connect to a MB pro mid 2010 running 10.7.4 I got the same problem that every time I launched Android File Transfer, the application would not respond. It made no difference if I had the phone connected or not - I just had to keep forcing a close of the application. After reading some stuff online I thought I would try switching from MTP to PTP on the phone while connected. I did it a few times and opened the application a couple of times and lo and behold, it suddenly popped up the file structure of the phone so I could copy music at last. Now that I managed that, it opens automatically each time I connect with MTP active. I wish I could explain what is going exactly but it worked and continues to do so. I also closed as many background processes as possible before this and ejected the DVD that was int he drive. It might work for you if you are as stubborn as me.

Looks like the only working solution (working occasionally, that is :( ), is Samsung Kies.

According to Samsung's customer support here in France (I called them last month), Kies is the *only* supported option, period. So, I expect no help from Samsung regarding Android File Transfer....

Got an S3 three days ago, after having used android devices with my Mac for years. This issue is totally unacceptable, I know there are wifi alternatives but I want an USB transfer. Kies does not work on Lion: Samsung's fault, Android file transfer does not work: Google's fault. Will wait one month until Samsung/Google/whoever fix this and I then drop Android and switch to anything else but for sure not Android/Samsung. They probably don't care, but my TV and DVD players will also not be a Samsung anymore. Such an expensive device, it's a shame!

I agree ldave...lackluster answer, Paul. This has become a critical issue --> Switched to Android from iphone after 4 years. Bought GS3s for their video/photo capabilities, for use in our workflow, specifically for the ANDROID unencumbered file transfer feature. Except, Google File Transfer doesn't play nice with our macpros. So I report the issue in July, figuring this is, perhaps, one of the biggest market differentiators for Google in the smartphone sector -- they'll address this pretty quickly. Two months later??? Google, this is NOT all good! After filling up the internal and the 32GB card 12 times, we're left with unacceptable options: 1) Kies transfers followed by export. Not acceptable. The app is glitchy, has missed files and the two-step process costs me money in production time. 2) Kies Air followed by export. Ditto + slllllooooooower, and often doesn't work. 3) microsd reader. Sure, we can get our files off of external quickly, but I don't want my crew disassembling the phones daily -- have you seen the cracked backs? Then we still have to use Kies to sync, deal with the internal, and maintain file/phone backup... 4) Third-party software. Geez, I wanted the assurance of a GOOGLE product; that would seamlessly integrate with our Google products workflow. If you can't fix it, buy somebody who can...you can afford it. Bottom line -- those of us who bought these phones made you the market leader. You're still precariously on the far edge of the chasm, and only addressing your customers needs will keep you there, and I'm sure Seth Godin would agree. Vic -- take charge, please. Mashable...you listening?

Hey everybody complaining about this, and demanding that google fix it; I think they already did. My co-worker has Jellybean 4.1 on his unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus, and this bug is not in evidence. I'm guessing you are mostly Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners, like me, and are running 4.0.4. You should be bugging Verizon to roll out 4.1, not bugging Google to fix 4.0.4. (Or just download the 4.1.1 ROM and write it yourself.)

Sep 19, 2012
#90 ldave...@gmail.com
Hi mor..., if it's confirmed, this is great news :-)

Of course, we would have loved to hear it from Google themselves, because they're giving the distinct impression they're not listening.

Anyway, as Samsung is expected to start deploying Jelly Bean on the S3 next month, I should know very soon if my woes are over or not.

Nah, I have an unlocked galaxy nexus running 4.1.1, and last I checked this was still a problem. Haven't tried to bluetooth anything since the middle of last week, though, so if the problem has indeed been resolved since then, I will be super happy. Emailing ebooks to my kindle account instead of bluetoothing them over is really stupid, and it's even stupider that I could transfer whatever the hell file I wanted to my mytouch 4G, but when I upgraded phones I got a usability & compatibility downgrade.

Currently, a few things remain unclear to me:

1a- Is it a Samsung-related or a Google-related problem? The S3 seems to have a non-standard, Samsung USB stack (cf. http://libmtp.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=libmtp/libmtp;a=blob;f=src/music-players.h;hb=HEAD)

1b- and: Will Jelly Bean solve the problem on the S3?

2- Did Google even take the time to recompile Android File Transfer against the newest version of the libmtp library? I'm asking because a hex dump of the file:

/Applications/Android\ File\ Transfer.app/Contents/MacOS/libmtp.dylib

shows that all recent Samsung ids found in the latest music-players.h are missing...

All I know it that neither Samsung ("Use Kies") nor Google seem to care...

VZW, Galaxy Nexus 4.1, Android 4.0.4, MacOS 10.8.1.

When I connect the phone via USB, the file structure of the phone pops up, but attempting to drag files into finder starts to work and then inevitably hangs forever until the phone is disconnected.

I would really like Android File Transfer to be fixed to be functional.

I spoke to samsung about this problem with android file transfer not working,,, Yes guess what, they just pass the book to google to sort out, To keep all there new customers happy, they should be in touch with google instantly to sort out this problem, but no just wash your hands as they have already made millions with the s3. This is the problem with these large companies never fight for there customers. Unfortunately is this what we have to put up with?

However, simply recompiling the libs is not enough to get Android File transfer going as it seems AFT (google) has introduced the following calls

_LIBMTP_Get_Device_Timeout
_LIBMTP_Set_Device_Timeout
_LIBMTP_Set_Load_Cache_On_Demand

Which are not there in the stock library. If we could have a patch for these functions against the standard current libmtp upstream library source, it may work.

There was a discussion between Google and the libmtp developers and it seems a different subset of additional functionality was decided upon, but somehow these (alternative) functions are in the google supplied libmtp libraries within the AFT package.

Google.. Can you just give us a new spin of the AFT against the latest libmtp and let us test it please.

Same damn problem here. There is no way to set the phone for camera or mass storage, no USB settings option in Settings menu, phone is now pretty much useless as a camera or music player since nothing can be transferred on or off. To me, this voids my contract with Sprint. This absolutely must be fixed immediately. Can we mount a class action suit against Google?

Sep 23, 2012
#109 jonathan...@gmail.com
Ok, Some headway made tonight, I implemented stubs for the missing functions from the google code in the stock libmtp-1.1.4 source. Took my best guess at the following:

    LIBMTP_Get_Device_Timeout
    LIBMTP_Set_Device_Timeout
    LIBMTP_Set_Load_Cache_On_Demand

int LIBMTP_Get_Device_Timeout(LIBMTP_mtpdevice_t *device){
        return (7);
}
void LIBMTP_Set_Device_Timeout(LIBMTP_mtpdevice_t *device, uint32_t value){
        return;
}
LIBMTP_mtpdevice_t *LIBMTP_Set_Load_Cache_On_Demand(LIBMTP_mtpdevice_t *device, uint32_t value){
        return device;
}

After compiling and installing the new libmtp.dylib files into /usr/local/lib I then removed the copies (there are two) in the AFT Package so that it would pick up the ones in /usr/local/lib. Plugged in the phone, started Android File Transfer and was greeted a few seconds later with the gui (see screenshot attached). I can create (and after creating - i can delete) files/folders and the phone registers the sync, the files are visible on the phone - but the listing of files/folders on the phone doesn't currently show.

I'm getting further each time, at least I can now get new files/folders to the phone...

My sister works at Google and I sent the link of the issue to the engineers. They gave me feedback that unfortunately there's nothing Google can do and that the problem is in some sort of incompatibility between Samsung Galaxy S3 and 4.0.4 (sorry, I don't understand the technical details) which can only be fixed by Samsung. He advised us to pressure Samsung to fix it because Google already looked into the issue and it's out of their reach to fix it. Any suggestions?
Sep 24, 2012
#111 ldave...@gmail.com
With all due respect, no kudos to Google's engineers :-/

jonathan...@gmail.com (comments #107 and #109) is at least doing something and making some progress, instead of sitting idly and putting the blame on Samsung.

Google would be well-advised to get in touch with him and offer him all the support they can (provided he needs it, and not the other way round...)
Sep 24, 2012
#112 nevernol...@gmail.com
My phone is a Galaxy S2 (Sprint), and it clearly isn't an issue with Samsung, since it worked perfectly well before the upgrade.

I guess the best solution would be to have USB Mass Storage (UMS) support on Galaxy S3. This solution works on every single operating system, unlike this MTP/PTP crap...
Sep 24, 2012
#114 nevernol...@gmail.com
I would be happy to have the MTP/PTP option restored. It involves a moment of confusion and frustration the first time it's set up, but works very smoothly after that, and allows the phone to remain functional while connected to the computer.
Sep 24, 2012
#115 ldave...@gmail.com
@pierre.e, Google has valid technical reasons for removing UMS support. Pity they chose a system implemented only on Microsoft OSes as a replacement, though...

#116 shoob...@gmail.com
> Pity they chose a system implemented only on Microsoft OSes

Google is apparently taking a "screw the customer" page from Apple. MTP and PTP are superior protocols, but functionally not useful to a large percentage of the population. Many computers (even the many, many old Windows in use, sometimes in force due to corporate update cycles) do not have support for this.

A better option would be to include and push for their use (default on, explain, etc) but also include USB Mass Storage as an option.

I also fail to believe that this is entirely Samsung's fault. Even if a unique bug, Google certainly has relationships with their vendors (and Samsung has made Nexus devices, so they have a special relationship). And, the GS3 is the largest selling device on the planet. How can it not be in Google's interest to make it the best possible device, and bug Samsung, every operator, etc. to make it better?
Sep 24, 2012
#117 Batmen...@gmail.com
Agree agree agree with 116. USB mass storage is so USEFUL; why on earth wouldn't you want it at least as an option? And all of us G SIII owners with Macs are currently feeling the burn, and the GS III is the FLAGSHIP of both Samsung and Android generally. Really, really bad move there.

Yes, I see advantages to MTP, but a protocol with such spotty support cannot be counted on as the only method available.

#121 jonathan...@gmail.com
So, not much progress today. I've changed the additional functions slightly and now have a better startup response. Today I am at the point whereby I can plug in the S3 and the background AFT process spots it:

  -> LIBMTP_Detect_Raw_Devices(0xBFFFE71C, 0xBFFFE718, 0xBFFFE708)
    -> get_mtp_usb_device_list(0xBFFFE6C8, 0x3, 0x60)
      -> init_usb(0x520840, 0x9147708E, 0xFDED151)
      <- init_usb = 70
  ...
  ...
  <- LIBMTP_Detect_Raw_Devices = 1373

And starts the AFT Gui automatically.

However, I still have the blank (no files, no folders) list in both 'Phone' and 'Card' tabs. I can currently:

    Create Folders
    Destroy Created Folders ( I can't see the other existing - ie not created through AFT - folders to destroy them)
    Copy Files into created folders. Copy Folders, contents and subfolder contents etc.

To the point of the blank lists/windows, I can trace the gui's calls through libusb and libmtp and I seem to see the data coming back from the phone via LIBMTP_Get_Storage() -> ptp_getstorageinfo() to the point where we return, without errors, the linked list of file/folders from the phone source (card or internal). (See attached dapptrace output).

Tracing the GUI reveals some info, I can see it trying to traverse a vector seemingly full of the folder/file info, but it never gets drawn to screen. I'm continuing to muck about but I'm not sure how much further I will get, without Googles src i'm pretty much at a dead end. I'll update with anymore headway. At least I can now copy files onto my phone, I can then move them into the right place using a filebrowser on the handset itself. Not perfect, but its better than its been.

FWIW, I can totally understand that this hasn't yet been fixed, this bug report has only 94 stars (at the time of writing) whilst the bugs in this category being worked top around 8500 stars, so we are still a small subset of users reporting this issue.

If we were paying for support I would expect more of a response from Google. From my findings so far, it's still hard to say whether this is google's issue, or samsungs, since samsung deliver the ROM it's difficult to say what they have changed from stock - the MTP stack may be one of the components that Samsung changed (remember windows and 3rd party battles to be the dominant bluetooth stack on your system...).

That said, the info points to the MTP stack on the phone (whom so ever created it) being compliant with libmtp from my findings. I was able to stat all aspects of the phone as I would expect using the command line mtp-* utilities I have compiled. Since that suggests the phone is ok, and since my further findings with the latest libmtp source suggest that the problem does rest with Google. Either through them having an outdated libmtp distribution bundled with their AFT package. Or through them making a change with regard to MTP in android 4.0.2 and later.

More people running into this issue and starring this bug report should heighten it's visibility. I'm not too optimistic that 4.1 fixes this since comment 29 suggests otherwise. Anyone wishing to test this theory out can root their S3 and install latest & greatest but personally I'm not willing to do that.

For me, I'm not too bothered about this, I have a number of workarounds, but when I noticed it didn't work I felt the urge to investigate. Finding the cause/solution is far more interesting than being able to copy files via usb :)

#122, It's worth pointing out that no application that is supposed to connect via USB works any more. Not just AFT. Even Kies can't do it for me nor can SyncMate. I'm amazed if google had purposefully broken libtmp compatibility in a minor upgrade. I think there's a little buggling in there somewhere :)

 jonathan...@gmail.com my 2 cents, just in case it helps (or create more confusion :-). I came across XNJB that allows transferring music over USB using MTP http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/index.html . At a first glance, it looked a bit outdated (last version released in October 2011). I have installed it, connected the S3 and I was able to connect and transfer a file to the device without any problem (device set to MTP).

I have downloaded the source code and it uses libmtp 1.1.0; not sure why it works since the S3 is not listed in music-players.h.
Sep 25, 2012
#125 ldave...@gmail.com
Just tried XNJB (which I had tried a few weeks ago already): on OS X 10.7 Lion, it will usually crash right on startup. And when it doesn't, it doesn't see any phone connected (MTP or PTP mode).

Regarding Kies, this pathetic piece of software is not even sure it is up-to-date or not (gives two contradictory indications in two different places in the software). It seems to connect to the SIII today (I succeeded not ONCE, but TWICE hurray!), but the upgrade program crashes just after downloading the new version.

I DON'T want to buy an iPhone 5, but maybe it's the easiest way after all?
Sep 25, 2012
#126 ldave...@gmail.com
@jonathan...,

you're right to point out that this issue totals "only" 94 stars. I had a look at the top issues, and I find the results a bit puzzling, to say the least. Looks like most top-starred issues are either outdated (already solved) of fairly futile, eg:

"EAP-SIM Authentication Method for WLAN Hotspots" (issue 9329, 8360 stars). This method exists in my SIII. So, why is the issue still open? It should be closed by now.

"Allow removal of not installed apps from "All" tab in Google Play Store." ( issue 28964 , fourth most starred). Come on guys, 4547 stars for that??

Google's sloppy management of the issues here is obscuring arguably more important issues. Stupid, stupid, stupid....

Galaxy S3, Android 4.0.4 + OS X Mountain Lion on a 2012 MBP and a 2009 iMac = Android File Transfer can not detect the phone.
Sep 25, 2012
#128 nickmitc...@googlemail.com
Hey, I have been reading above as I have the same problem between my new (european version) Galaxy S3 and MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.5.

Using the XNJB GUI, I can view the files that are on the internal memory of the phone, but I cannot edit or add to them in any way.

I have a 16Gb Kingston MicroSD card, which was not read at all by the XNJB and like the internal memory, is not detected or read by the MBP when I connect it via the phone by USB.

What I can do, which I haven't see above is simply add things to the MicroSD card when I take it out of the phone and connect to the laptop through a different medium (another phone or adapter). I add things to the card and then when the card is inserted into the phone it reads everything as one would expect.
I know this isn't a massive help, but it offers the same outcome as Jonathan (kind of) #121 - without having to do anything technical at all... You just need some sort file browser on your phone.

This is a ridiculous flaw to have between the two biggest technology giants of our time. If you buy a MBP and Galaxy S3, you spend well over 2000 €, $ or whatever currency... you expect them to do the most basic of tasks!

Regarding Kies, it looks like I've been luckier this afternoon :-)

After manually downloading and upgrading the app (now: 1.3.0.12093_4), not only did I manage to connect to the Mac and backup my phone, but I also came across a magical button labelled "Internal Memory". This button may have existed in previous versions, but I had never noticed it.

Clicking on it brought a pop-up window similar to that of AFT, which let me transfer all types of files (not just music, photos and videos) both ways at USB speed!

If Kies continues to work for me like it did this afternoon, I think I'll be satisfied and stop waiting for AFT to be fixed :-)

Device is detected by both DropBox agent and Apple's Image Capture app (in Image Capture you can setup any other application to popup on device connection, and that works) but not in Android File Transfer

I have found a log file here:

~/Library/Logs/MTPViewer/MTPAgent.log

where, every time the device is connected two errors are written:
Code:

ERROR TID[accb8a28](10-10 12:41:0) MTPFactory::GetConnectedDeviceIDs: No devices found
ERROR TID[accb8a28](10-10 12:41:0) MTPFactory::GetConnectedDeviceIDs: No devices found

If Android File Tranfer and the Android File Tranfer Agent are NOT running then NO message is written to the log
If only the Agent is running the message is written once only. If both are running it is written twice.

So the agent detects that the device is connected, there is probably some problem in the agent that fails to get the device ID (whatever that is) and prints an error to the log file, passes back the error to the main Android File Tranfer app that echoes the same error again.

This is not a samsung issue, this is purely google. As many have stated, AFT works with older versions of OSX. Samsung would have you use Kies, which is a piece of shit.

Would give anything to revert from the MTP and be able to simply mount my phone as a drive. Those were the good old days.

SGS III & Mac OSX 10.6.8

AFT & Mac OSX do not recognise phone when attached via USB

Solution: use Kies (latest firmware).

Having not used Kies in the past thinking it was pants, was forced to find a solution to get files across to my GS3. Didn't fancy using the wifi approach given how many files and folder i had to move across. My phone was already connected via USB cable and i fired-up Kies. If you haven't used it in a while you will need to upgrade to latest version which means disconnecting your phone.

- Once updated, rebooted, connect your phone and start Kies.
- in the top left corner Kies should show you that it is connecting to your phone/device.
- Once connected it will the basic information about your device in the viewing pane to the right.
- The Internal Memory and external memory should be split and shown.
- to the right of each memory is a shaded blue circle with a folder inside it.
- if you click the on that it will bring up all the folders currently in each memory.
- Any files/folders you want transferred to your device can now be simply dragged and dropped.
- Transfer rate is a very respectable speed (took 7mins to transfer 7gb of audio files).

and there you have it problem solved (well it worked for me).

Bottom Line: Kies can and will do the job competently try it you may be surprised (as i was).

Godo Luck.

Alright, this whole deal can be fixed by installing Cyanogenmod10, which is basicaly 4.1.1. most of you should be tech savy enough to accomplish this task. KulCha is correct. I have Kies (2.0.0.12095_7) I did as suggested and clicked on the blue circles with the file folder icon in them. Viola! I had tried Kies previously but was unaware of the file directory option by clicking on blue circles.

With the message still on the screen, I disconnected the Nexus from the lead, switched from PTP to MTP on the device, and reconnected it. Hi guys--I received a jelly bean update for my unlocked Galaxy S3 which now shows the phone to be running 4.1.1 version of android. My S3 now works with the Android File Transfer which had previously stopped working some months ago on my Mac computer running Mountain Lion. When I connect the phone via usb to my mac my phone shows in the drop down menu that it is connected. I tick the MTP box (media device) and the Android Transfer application opens on my mac computer to allow me to add files etc. It seems the Jelly Bean update has cured the transfer to mac problems. Hi again. The Android file transfer has certainly started working for me and the only thing that changed was the recent Jelly Bean update. I don't know if you have used file transfer before but you may know that the first time you connect your phone to the computer you have to start the Android Transfer app manually. The app should then open itself the next time your phone is connected. If this does not work can I suggest using a "usb to go" cable to transfer music - photos and videos etc to your phone from a usb stick. I have been using mine for a few months now. Just make sure the cable you order is compatable with the s3 .once the cable is connected you can move files to and from the the stick and your phone. When connected the phone opens up the contents of your usb stick. Just hold your finger on the file you want to move and a window opens up with some options. Press on move and go to the folder you want to send your file to and press on done or move in the top right hand corner of the screen. Hope this helps getting files from your mac onto your phone or phone to mac. Remember -- dont just pull the cable from the phone when finished transferring files. Pull down the notifications bar and tap on the usb icon- a few seconds later the phone will show the stick has been safely removed from the phones software.

After "Updating" my phone, as you all know... I was only able to use about 80% of my phone's functions. It is slower now, AND... my two biggest issues are: 1. Not being able to use PdaNetMac (which is the fastest and most non-invasive IP. Even faster than connecting my Bluetooth to my iMac.), 2. I used to be able to charge my phone continuously, even when computer was in "sleep mode". The USB/Outlet heads were revamped, in order to make our lives easier. Not to have to plug/unplug our phones all day, from each charger. I/We all have friends and families that are looking to get new phones for Christmas, and usually I recommend DROID. But, lately with all the "Updates", which are downgrades... I don't know anymore. Google, please help us get our FIXED UPDATE back. I appreciated using my computer as my charger, while organizing phone files. Hope Google is listening... GOOD LUCK, TO ALL OF YOU!!!

Finally figured it out.
In my situation, I bought my Samsung from Costco.
Tried to connect it to iMac running OSX Mountain Lion.
Using ATP, it kept coming up as device not found (or whatever).
Came up the same way on an identical IMac that didn't have Mountain Lion installed.
The culprit was THE CABLE. The phone came from Costco with a package that included an extra cord.
As soon as I switched to the USB cable that shipped with the phone, all the problems immediately disappeared.
BTW - the symptoms were exactly the same with a Motorla Atrix HD, and my Samsung cable worked fine with that phone as well.
Moral of the story for me is that cheap cables may seem fine because they are charging your phone, but all cables are not created equal.

For me, AFT won't work with Kies installed. Uninstalling Kies from the Mac (using the uninistall program in the Kies .dmg) fixed this. Re-installing Kies breaks it again.

Will experiment to see if just removing the 'Kies Agent' from Login Items is enough.

Plea to developers: Please stop silently installing these agents! I can cope with not running two sync apps at the same time, but not if they all try to install competing 'agents'!

Nov 24, 2012
#222 Daniel.P...@googlemail.com
Just checked again - removing the agent isn't good enough.

Apart from that it's pretty clear:

Uninstall Kies: AFT starts working again.

Had the same problems as most people above. Android File Transfer would not work on my MacBook Air running 10.8.2. I had the latest version of Kies installed and tried pretty much everything to get both apps working. In the end I came across Comment 214 on this thread.

I tried to install new drivers under the Kies Tools menu but this did not work. I then uninstalled Kies completely and Android File Transfer worked straight away.

Previously I had removed the Kies agents from the Login items but this had no effect. It seems a complete uninstall does the trick though. This is strange because I would imagine that the Android File Transfer app would have nothing in common with Kies.

Does anyone out there know what kind of hold Kies takes over the system in order to break Android File Transfer?

Working at last! (OSX 10.6.8, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Jelly Bean)

I came back to try everything again after the Jelly Bean upgrade. At first, the USB connection with AFT failed as before (no device found) but then I noticed something in comment #228 about *uninstalling*. I've never uninstalled anything on a Mac before - normally I just delete the program, but this time, actually uninstalling made a difference. (Simply deleting the Kies program did not make a difference.)

Here's what I did.

1. To uninstall Kies, you need the original installation package. I downloaded it again from samsung.com/kies. Open the disk image and the uninstaller is in there.

2. AFT was already installed so I didn't need to change that

3. Android device set to USB as Media device (MTP)

4. Connect the USB cable. The first time I did this, the AFT GUI opened (like Finder) but with empty folders.

4. Disconnect USB cable and then connect it again. This time, AFT gave me a message like "If your device is locked, unplug the USB cable, enter the device password and then connect the USB cable again."

Hey preso! This time the AFT folder lists were populated with my files and folders and I could copy on and off the device or SD card.

As much as I love AirDroid, the speed of the cable connection is great for moving large files.

Just wanted to point out to anyone that might have EasyTether installed on your mac that the USB drivers prevent AFT from finding your phone. I imagine there are other programs on the mac that "hijack" the connection to the phone when connected via USB. In situations other than EasyTether, I don't know the exact procedure but it's probably similar to unloading the driver for EasyTether. Listed below is the command to run to unload the driver for EasyTether which will then allow AFT to see the device:

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/EasyTetherUSBEthernet.kext

Hopefully that helps some people

This worked for me...Samsung Galaxy Nexus with 4.0.4...Mac OSX Lion.
Settings > Storage > Click three dots down at bottom right for menu > Click USB Computer Connection > Set to MTP.
Go to android.com/filetransfer, download AFT, save it to Applications and you're in.
For camera photos and videos, go to DCIM folder, then Camera folder, drag and drop using Finder and whatever program you use. I used iPhoto.

If a Samsung error is causing issues with Galaxy S3's, it wreaks of being runoff from their lawsuit with Apple. If so, it's completely stupid, and might bring people to think more about going Windows 8 for their computer/tablet/phone.

Hi, just HAD the same problem, not anymore.

Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet
MAC: OSX 10.6.8
Kies uninstalled

The solutions is SIMPLE: you should uncheck the box USB debugging on your Tablet:
Setting > Developers options > USB debuggig
(you will have to unplug the Note from the Mac).

After that when you connect the Note with the MAC, AFT starts normally and you can transfer the files without any problems.

Had same terrible problems with my new Note 2 and now that there is no USB mass storage option here is how I fixed it (better than a cable and using the non working Android File Transfer for Mac or Kies which is aweful and also didnt work:

I can fix this - Had same problem with Mac OS X, all samsung products have the same problem - tablets and phones, anything with Android system.

I was getting the error 10 as well, and as a developer of Android apps I was getting crazy. Reinstalled Kies, hoping for the driver update, no help, used MTP, could not connect, use camera couldn't connect. EASY EASY SOLUTION! And it's more awesome than when I used to have Mass Device support under USB (Because this option locks out the apps from using the storage card when it is controlled by the PC or Mac's USB).

Run FileZilla in Mac (or any free FTP software), run SwiftFTP on the Android. Swift FTP is a ftp server which runs on your phone. It can be started and stopped. Under Wi-Fi, I was able to move files up and down, right to the root of the phone. Rooted or unrooted, no problem (obviously you get one level lower if you are rooted.).... Look for the card under /storage/sdcard0, and look for the external card in /storage/extSdcard01 so easy and so elegant. The cool thing is that you actually see the apps grabbing on to the files! As I'm downloading 20 gig of music to my external card, I see the Music app populating it. And as previously stated better than a cable because you aren't locking out the storage cards from the device.

Do yourself a favor. Get Kies. I've been battling with android file failure for too long. Click the folder icon and drag and drop until you bleed out your ears. Go get it now. I'll wait here.

OS X 10.8.2, connecting to Nexus 7 with AFT worked fine, but plugging Galaxy Tab GT-P7300 reflashed to Android 4.0.1 would give me the dreaded "Could not connect" message.

Uninstalling Kies did the trick for me. Now AFT connects to both devices smoothly. Thanks for the suggestion!

BTW another app that could interfere is Easy Tether.

I finally got my Galaxy Tab 2 to connect by uninstalling Kies from my Mac (OS 10.8) and tablet. Then I reinstalled Kies from the Samsung Web site; see link below. Just for kicks I turned on Kies on my Galaxy S2 phone at the same time. The tablet was connected to the computer via USB. Both were using wi-fi. It may help you to run two devices through Kies simultaneously.

I have had this problem on my iMac 27" 2011-early i5 10.6.8 and my Samsung Galaxy S3 MetroPCS.
Read and do this and that delete this, clear that
FINALLY got it with using App Zapper to uninstall the ATF (latest one) and the Kies to uninstall Kies (twice).
Now reinstalled ATF and bam!, up it pops Phone/Card, all folders and it is under MTP not camera.
I read something about USB stack problem (Samsung not Google) or something to that affect.
Who cares? I mean if Kies (latest one) will connect on the phone (MTP) then why can't ATF?
Oh, when I got Kies (before I uninstalled it) I did REinstall drivers.
So maybe that helps but for right now it works as MTP.
Of course I have not restart my iMac, so it may not work after a restart/shutdown.
This is a problem that GOOGLE should fix because SAMSUNG is the leader in Android phone sales.
And they all are based of UNIX (Apple/Android/Linux)....so why is this such a problem to fix?

do not panic. if your "android file transfer" wrote could not connect to device. Simply remove the installation file via KIES. Dmg. And once again connect the usb.

Attention. Before you connect the usb you should be on "usb debugging". go to preference>advanced settings>Usb debugging (on)

Hi,

I tried the same steps in comment #231 for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Andrdoid 4.0.4) and it works ! Hallelujah !!

I initially just deleted Kies, but you need to uninstall it for Android File Transfer to work. Kies is simply useless, I installed it, updated it and never worked.

Can anyone at Google please open source the "Android File Transfer" app for MacOsX ? That should be at no cost for you Google, and the community would be able to improve it (and, finally, port it to Linux).

Thanks
