----- Bug: ----- After failing the pattern too many times and click the button, it will tell you to login with your Google account to unlock it. However, it always returns 'Incorrect username/password.', even if this is (!00% certain) correct. This is quite annoying since I now got an unusable phone of 2 weeks old. ----- Tried fixes: ----- Rebooting Any type of combination (username, username@gmail, username@gmail.com, username@googlemail.com) Unlocking the 'google captcha' (https://www.google.com/accounts/UnlockCaptcha) Waiting a few minutes before 3G connects to the internet ----- Reproduce: ----- WARNING: THIS WILL LOCK YOU OUT OF YOUR PHONE FOREVER. 1) Draw the wrong pattern 5 times 2) Click the 'Unlock pattern' (or something along those lines) button. 3) Try unlocking

(Htc magic), Have had this phone is feb 09, since the other day have never had a major problem apart from the old freeze here and there. Which you get with most smart phones, so fair enough. I woke up to find that i have been locked out of my own phone its very annoying to find out that such a greatly designed phone has such a bug that lets it down overall, i have confirmed that i have the correct login/password as i have accesed my google account on my pc. To find out that i'm not the only person with this problem by researching for the last couple of days , this is a major problem that HTC support team should been on top of a long time and if this how they wish to treat their customers, i may have to leave vodafone and move to o2 to use the iphone which i have been against from the start. As i use this phone for a business it is fustrating that all my contacts, notes, address etc could be erased if i factory reset my phone but if this is the only soloution which other options are available to me ? I see a great number of people trying to help but all advance technical members of vodaphone and htc support team are no where to be found, and if they have posted something, they have just copied from other posts that have been there before hand. HTC SHOULD OFFER SOME TYPE OF REMORSE TO ALL US CUSTOMERS OR RELEASE A SOLUTION VERY.SOON.

I set a screen lock on my phone ages ago but did not like it so turned the feature off. Over the weekend I found out that I had been calling people by accident when the phone (Vodafone HTC Magic) was in my pocket so decided to reinstate the screen lock: 1. I ticked the 'use screenlock' option. 2. I selected the option to set a new pattern. 3. I couldn't change my pattern because I had to enter my old pattern which I could not remember. 4. I looked on the internet and found out there was an option to change the pattern once the phone is locked. I did not like the sound of this so decided to turn the pattern back off. 5. I unticked the 'use screenlock' option except I couldn't because I had to enter my pattern first (which I still could not remember). 6. So now I am worried because I can't let my phone go to sleep. So I desperately search the internet for a way to turn it off. 7. The only hope is that if you get the pattern wrong there is an option to use the Google account. Phew, I think. 8. I hit the red button twice to sleep and reawaken the phone. 9. I enter the pattern wrongly and get the option to enter my Google account. 10. The Google account does not work despite me being 100% sure I have the correct username and password. 11. I try just the username, I try username@googlemail.co.uk, username@googlemail.com, username@gmail.co.uk, username@gmail.com to no avail. 12. I try uppercase password, still no luck. 13. I turn to the internet and find I am one of many in the same situation. This is unbelievable especially as I had my Donut upgrade at the weekend. 14. I have tried the manic home bashing suggested above, I have tried Daly Thompson's Decathalon on the Home and Menu keys but nothing does anything. I have tried putting calls on hold, tried pulling the status bar down. Nothing works.

As a follow up to my previous post #68, I used #58 to reset the phone. This was actually a lot less painful than I was expecting as the contacts are synched with Google and the contents of the SD were not deleted. Even reinstalling apps was not too bad as the Downloads page in the Market is obviously synched too so it was just a case of installing everything I wanted from the list.

I completely refuse to factory reset my phone. Google, this is completely unacceptable. I freaking loved this phone (Mytouch 3G) to death until last night when this happened. There is unrecoverable information that I couldn't even begin to put a price on in my phone and I know others feel my pain. I'm going to wait this one out as long as I can (only being able to recieve calls and not a damn thing else). All the faith and trust I had in Android was shattered when I went online to find a solution and found there was none. (G1 users, I'm so jealous you have found a way to get around this). A software update obviously won't help out our situation since we wouldn't be able to update. There HAS to be a solution.

I DID IT! MYTOUCH USERS! OR HERO OR MAGIC OR WHATEVER ITS CALLED EVERYWHERE ELSE, I DID IT! thank the lord. the hyper repetitive pressing of the home screen method works! believe it! just do it until it works! heres exactly what I did: -press the password text field to bring up the keyboard. -long press the ?123 button and select android keyboard settings (or whatever it says) (not input method) (this won't bring up anything visible except for when the onscreen keyboard moves up from the bottom of the screen, you'll see the options for a second but this probably doesnt matter... i'm just telling you what i did.) -press the emergency dialer NOT when its at the bottom of the screen but after it moves up to the middle of the screen above the keyboard. -as your pressing the emergency dialer on screen, RAPIDLY press the home (house) button REPEATEDLY, literally as fast as you can. i kid you not, i tried doing it with the emergency dialer while it was at the bottom of the screen and when i tried it this way it worked the SECOND TIME. if it doesnt work, JUST KEEP TRYING. i promise you not only does it work, its your ONLY CHOICE.
,
Oct 31, 2009
lol it works just like he said with both hands, repeatedly press home and emergency dialer.

If your phone is rooted then install the Android SDK and do the following: > ./adb shell # sqlite3 data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db sqlite> update system set value=0 where name='lock_pattern_autolock'; sqlite> update system set value=0 where name='lockscreen.lockedoutpermanently'; sqlite> .exit # exit The above commands will connect to your settings-database and then disable the autolock as well as reset the permanent lock. Wow... this is some total backwards crap here. I had much higher expectations of Google than this. Of course, there are bugs - especially in an emerging platform such as Android. But, to have a rather CRITICAL bug like this come out and then do nothing about it except - Oh, it's fixed in the next release. And just out of curiosity - WHEN IS THAT RELEASE COMING OUT? That statement was made 4 months ago... Even apple has fixed their bugs in Snow Leopard in that amount of time... How many releases has Microsoft made in that amount of time? I don't even want to compare how quickly any other OPEN SOURCE company releases updates... If you're not going to fix it, then let the community... Cyanogen could have handled this crap ages ago... but, no - you had to send off a Cease and Desist. Get with it Google, this is straight bull $h!t...
,
Nov 10, 2009
I agree with Daniel, leaving a critical bug in, not providing any workarounds or compensation for those losing all their data. This is extremely pathetic and Google lost all the respect they earned from me.
,
Nov 10, 2009
last week was annoying for me. firstly, y lost all the data storaged on SD. yesterday, astrid app stopped working with aaaaaaall my tasks inside. now, this problem with the pattern. all this is happening since i had the first of a repetitive error: "Android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly" comment #71 works... but i really think i'm going hard resetting my phone (htc magic) i'm truly disappointed...
,
Nov 11, 2009
Same problem here with Samsung i5700 Spica, Android 1.5 It is interesting, that after wipe this problem does not appear again...
,
Nov 11, 2009
Agreed - Google please reopen this issue up. The priority needs to be critical, and the fix needs to be done for all Android OS's. I just got a Droid and am alarmed that this has not been fixed. I've tried doing the unlock using my google account thing and that's how I got to this page. This is bad bad bad especially as Google and Verizon and Motorola are trying to advertise the Droid as the iPhone killer. One or all three of the companies need to put some man-power on this issue and answer these concerns.
,
Nov 12, 2009
I agree with #79 (minyangmao). #32 is a band-aid solution and not a permanent fix. Please give users choice to use this magic pattern permanent lockout option or good old enter secret pin option. In #32 have you thought of a case, what if user is in an area where there is no Data plan (internet) available for my phone to connect to Google Servers? Very disappointing.
,
Nov 12, 2009
I agree with #80 (prateek.arora). The secret PIN option would be most welcome. I miss my iTouch because of this. We are all trained to remember 4 digit PINs, and it's quite easy to enter on the fly. The pattern lock is a cool thing at first, but ends up being unwieldy and impractical. I first did a very easy pattern lock pattern but my friend guessed what it was on the first try! I then did an incredibly hard pattern lock pattern that 1) I was afraid of forgetting and 2) could never enter accurately while I was walking places (e.g. trying to make a call, etc). The pattern lock just feels less secure than 4-digit PIN. Please bring it back as an option for locking my data. I feel very uncomfortable walking around with a phone full of sensitive data that is not secured in some way. Thank you.

Readers of this thread, please subscribe and comment on a new Issue Thread I created so that we can get Google's attention on this SAME issue that persists for the Motorola Droid without resolution. Make some noise! New Issue Thread: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4784

Motorola Droid user here who has encountered this problem. Apparently it carried over from Donut to Eclair. I only have one google account on the phone and a facebook using the same email and password. I haven't changed my password in years. I know for a fact that my username and password are correct. I can log in a million times online. I cannot login to my Droid after incorrect pattern attempts. It seems as though it doesn't even check to verify my password. It IMMEDIATELY says invalid username/password. I highly doubt it communicated with any kind of server at all. Please fix this as soon as possible. I consider this a deal breaker for the phone and am seriously considering bringing it back before my 30 days are up.

Still not fixed in 2.0?!? Well, I'm going back to Windows Mobile :)) By the way I've found another bug. It may help you when your phone gets locked out forever. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4698

Heeeelp, Just discovered this flaw on Android, i have activated unlock pattern and done mistakes and now i m stuck with this bulls.. email/passord screen. I am on HTC MAGIC SFR (French) Cupcake 1.6. Couldn't imagine that flaw wasn't solved since all previous releases and fixes. Google, you really don't make it here. I don't want to wipe all my settings, photos, notes,to solve this. Could someone found a real trick to pass that buggy email/password screen. I tried several times home/emegency but no luck, it unlocked one time i don't know how?? but even after disabling unlock pattern in parameters, i forgot and let the phone shut the screen and when i get back that crappy email/screen was still here. I tried also the sqlite trick from adb shell :), but apparently sqlite3 is no more present in the /system/bin folder on cupacke 1.6. someone on could tell me how?? Need help,
,
Nov 24, 2009
That is odd. I thought sqlite3 is always included. Maybe the paths are not set correctly. Did you try to search for it? You can also download the DB file from your device (with adb) and use a tool like this: http://sqlitebrowser.sourceforge.net/ to browse it. See http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html to learn how to copy files.

Finally figured out to bypass that annoying email/password screen, i think this could solve problem for many peoples who do not want to Hard reset their gphone : - Make a call to your gphone and respond. - Just after closing the call, push repeatedely on "Home" button and there you are, it works the ... but it's not the case, we have some other things to do. - First Go to settings and disable that buggy Unlock Pattern feature. - The problem is not yet solved, the buggy login/pass screen is still here hidden somewhere, and will go back if put your phone on sleep mode (disable screen autoshutdown to keep your phone awake) to take time with next tricks. - Go to the gmail website and reset your password with a new one. - After few seconds (you could also force a mail sync) Android will show you a small triangle on the top status bar to warn you that you have to re-enter the new password you have setup on gmail. After entering the new password sync with google will be ok. You can after that push the power to go back to that crappy email/password screen and enter your email and new password, but that time the authentication will be successful and your Android will be completely unlocked. Hope this helped a lot of users like me.... give me feedback if it worked... And sorry for my crappy English..

Comment # 93, mehdi24, THANK YOU SO MUCH I am currently using a rogers HTC Dream (G1) and i was playing with the pattern and it locked up. i clicked forgot password and had all that BS where it wouldnt work. Your method saved me lots of time... Kudos to u man! *******TRY COMMENT 93************

Nov 29, 2009
93 did it for me (HTC Hero from Sprint.) Called myself on another phone, used the other phone to hang up and machine gunned the home key. this worked FIRST TRY! keep in mind i spent about 6 hours trying every other method on here and likely anywhere out there. No physical kepboard to spam with. No way to 'flip open and closed' damn emergency dialer while spamming home does nothing after 45 min straight trying. THIS WORKS! After this my keyboard wasnt working for the resync with google from the notification bar. After you get to the home: If you havent already changed your password, go into the settings menu of you phone and turn off automatic screen shutdown! Then change your google password via internetz making sure your phone doenst go to sleep. after you recieve the notification up top saying that you need to resync, pull it down and do so. *IF YOUR KEYBOARD DOESNT WORK AT THIS STEP: simply go back to the home screne, hit menu- settings- Data Synchronization, and click on the google part, it will ask you to enter in a jumbled word, then ask for your new password, enter it. THEN after your new password is accepted, and google FINISHES syncing properly, hit the end key and enter in your account@gmail.com and password. VUALA! it will make you enter a new lock code, and will re-enable your lock code, DONT F*#@ up the pass again.

HTC Hero - Orange, bought four weeks ago and still contains a months old bug... None of the above solutions work. I can't get to the home screen. It seems all bugs are solved, because the "too many pattern attempts" screen (re)appears always on top no matter what I do. All bugs fixed BUT this one. I used a google apps when setting up the phone for first time. I can change the password in google apps and the sync problem notification appears, but can't enter new password because the screen locks when clicking on the notification item. I can't access my data. This is a DATA-LOSS bug. I got a new mobile with a MONTHS OLD DATA-LOSS BUG, wooo hooo!! -1000 for google

Comment 57 works really great. I just want to update that comment with some more information. 1. Login to Gmail account that you have setup on the phone using your computer and change your password. 2. Follow the steps as given in comment in 57 and get to the home screen. (It is very important that you click on the emergency button only when the virtual keyboard is visible i.e your Emergency Button should appear in the middle of the screen) 3. Once you get to your home screen, follow these steps 3.1> Gmail Auto Sync should be checked 3.2> Click on Security & Location in settings main screen 3.2> Uncheck require pattern 3.3> While you do the above steps, phone tries to sync with your gmail account and gives you a alert message on your notification bar.( Gmail sync failed, check your password ) 3.4> Click on the alert message and change your password to your latest password that you updated recently. 3.5> Click on Disconnect Call button on your phone (Red Button) 3.6> Click on menu 3.7> Enter your User Name and new Password This will unlock the phone....... :-) You need to have some patience while doing the first step till you get to the home screen. 3.4> 3.3>

THIS IS DISGRACEFUL!!!! JUST HAD MY HTC HERO A FEW DAYS AND MY WIFE LOCKED IT. I RESET MY GOOGLEMAIL PASSWORD AND IT STILL WON'T WORK. I AM PAYING A LOT OF MONEY FOR THIS PHONE AND IT IS LOCKED OUT. DO NOT BUY AN ANDROID PHONE!!!!!!!!
,

#54 worked for me.
,
Nov 30, 2009
#54 (eventually) worked!!!! But it timed-out and now its locked again!!! GRRRRRRRRR"!!!!!!!! 1. Click emergency call 2. Bring down the notification panel 3. Click on the sign-in error whilst frantically clicking the home button It worked only once I think the trick was to HOLD DOWN the sign-in error while frantically hitting the home button. Since my phone was fairly new, it was difficult to know where to find the notification panel (drag down from the top of the screen) and the sign-in error. Once you are in emergency call mode, you can drag the notification panel down from the top of the screen. then, the sign-in error is the last notification in the list. On my phone this was off the end of the screen because I had a few text etc notifications. Suddenly I found myself at my home screen and I could read my messages, and I reset my pattern and took the pattern protection off. I thought this would fix the problem BUT I WAS WRONG! The phone timed out again and now its locked and the fix doesn't work.
,
Nov 30, 2009
Right. Got in again. Here is what it took. I did the same thing again - as #103 above, but this time it took a lot of attempts and during the process the phone rebooted itself! But eventually I somehow got in by a combination of presing the home key rapidly and variously holding or pressing the sign-in error notification. The phone lag was running slowly during this time, so maybe what all these presses was doing was overloading a buffer or something. After I got into the homepage, I went into settings and did the following: # Go into your security settings and disable the unlock pattern. You can now bypass the lockout just by opening the keyboard. # Change the password on your account, which may be your Google Apps account if you have one. # In a few moments, your phone will fail to sync with email and prompt you for a password. Enter the new password. # You can now log in with the new password. Lock your screen, press menu to try unlocking it, and enter your new information. This should unlock your phone. Google guys - One problem might have been that I don't think I'd ever sync'd with googlemail before - I had set up the account when I got the phone and forgot about it. It's only when I went into settings and chose to sync with Google that it prompted me for the new password. Anyway, my opinion is that this situation is ATROCIOUS! NO WAY should people have to go through all this - and we are the lucky ones. The people reading this generally have a wee bit of nous and know how to use a computer. The general mass of folk will be totally bereft. Remember Google guys - "Do no evil". To not fix a bug like this is positively diabolic. I am very annoyed.

had this problem last night with my HTC hero from Sprint. Went into the store and there response was that I was gonna get an email and safest bet is that phone would need to be reset to factory settings. I tried a few of the things in here and two of them worked momentarily. I called sprint tech support this morning and got it resolved. No loss of anything. Reset my password and all is well again. Good luck.

I've just encountered this on my G1. Imagine my shock, surprise, and dismay to learn that this bug has been outstanding since June. Google, Android - everyone involved - this is embarrassing. What more proof positive could exist that this product has no business being in the market. Six months on a "critical" bug. Horseshit.
,
Dec 8, 2009
I AM NOT HAPPY AT ALL!!! This bug has been know since June! It's across multiple handsets and multiple versions of the OS at least 1.5, 1.6 & now 2.0! The Droid was released w/ too much hype to have such a critical bug. This really sucks. I did finally reset my phone since I can't afford not to get calls. Now I'm waiting for it to synch so I can see how much I've lost.

----FOR HTC HERO Pattern Unlock Bypass----- #93 reinforced by #97 works like a charm!!! Definitely follow the tips recommended by Bokkan once you've accessed the home screen otherwise you will return to being asked to sign in to your google account again (making you back at []1). Kudos to the forum tipsters - I wud rather spend a few minutes/hrs scoping out the threads than spending days re-entering data and lost apps.
,
Dec 9, 2009
I am astonished and outraged that this defect has not been fixed after six months. I have just had to do a hard reset (I cleared data from Google Apps in Manage Applications to force another login to Google from the Market app, but my phone was refusing to connect to the Google servers so that didnt work) After a hard reset I have lost apps, shortcuts, bookmarks, my SMS history.... This is a shameful performance from Google. Put down the Google Goggles, put down all the other toys in Android 2.1 etc and FIX THIS DEFECT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE!!!!11!! (As you can tell, I am rather annoyed about this)
,
Dec 9, 2009
David, trust me, everyone attached to this issue is bothered by it. However, acting like a child will only piss the developers off more and potentially cause further delays. Lets keep it respectful as much as is possible.
,
Dec 9, 2009
Wesley, Given that this bug has had a status of "CLOSED" since September 3rd, it does not seem to be the case that the powers that be are bothered by it. People purchasing expensive phones expect a polished, ready to use product. I did not purchase an Android phone to sit around a communal fire singing Kumbaya. I do not care about the needs, wants, or desires of the people who fix bugs, I just want a phone that doesn't require me to delete all my data every time it gets confused. It's becoming very clear that the standard of quality that I've come to expect from Google does not apply Android. What a disappointment. I agree with David. This performance is Shameful.

HTC hero sprint, locked out, password wasn't working. 1. Called my phone from phone 2 2. Answered on my phone 3. Hit end on phone 2 while hitting home on my phone as fast as possible 4. Once at home screen, went to settings and disabled screen lock 5. Went to data synchronization settings, then tried to change google account info to current, which kept failing "Could not establish a data connection with the server" or something to that effect. Make sure you aren't booted in safe mode. 6. If you get the same error i keep getting, i'm not really sure what to do here other than restore the phone to factory settings, which can be done through the settings. Sadly, you will lose all data on the phone, but at least it's functioning again. This is in no way the ideal solution to this problem.
,
Dec 13, 2009
I have the very same problem. I have tried everything suggested and cant get past the google account info screen on HTC hero. The stupid thing is that you need to have the screen unlock on becuase otherwise the phone accesses data or makes calls from your pocket. I was pretty confident it couldn't accidentally screen unlock on code from your pocket but it did that too, whilst sitting on a plane and now my phone is well and truly locked. There seems to be no hard reset button on the HTC hero either.

SORTED !!!!!!!!!!!! I had this prolem but just sorted it, did a factory reset (even that wasnt that easy, not quite sure how i did it, held buttons down while starting up, phone then has no data but log back into your excisting google mail account and it all appears back on your phone (go into your market and go onto downloads, all your old apps appear here, just have to download them again. My phone is SORTED AGAIN,,,, THANK GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!

on the motorola droid phone you CANNOT simply uncheck the "require pattern" button because it makes you re enter the pattern to unlock it, and if you forgot it then what can you do?
,
Dec 14, 2009
I just wanted to say that the December Droid Update DID NOT FIX THIS ISSUE!!! It just happened to me today, luckily on try 19 I got the code right, or I would have had to hard reset. I can also say judging by the instantaneous response when I entered my google info, the phone did not go online to check.

HTC Hero, I just have this issue too this morning and I really frustrate by this bug. I try both new and old google account but it didn't work.!!

I guess no one goes through the complete thread before posting here. Recent comment contributors: This defect was prematurely closed by Google and #93 is not a fix but a band-aid bypass. You want Google to seriously look into this defect, it has been open again at http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4784 Please take out some time to "Star" that defect and post your opinion there. Thanks!

I have the Htc hero and i'm having the same issue.. i got the pattern wrong too many times and when i enter my gmail info it denies it instantly as if it doesn't even attempt to connect to the internet and verify it. someone called me and i cannot do anything from within the phone call to get to my home screen.

I have an HTC Hero running 1.5. This just happened to me today. I cannot believe that this STILL isn't fixed when the complaints are going back 6 months! I unbricked mine by going to google.com (not gmail) and changing my password then restarting the phone. After it restarted it eventually asked me for my new password to sync. I entered it then it prompted me to enter a new swipe code which I did and it has been working fine since. Thank GOD I looked around on here before I took the only action the idiots and Cellular South recommended & did a hard reset.

This just happened to me. I entered "null" as the password and was then prompted for a new pattern.

A friend of mine has just successfully used the null password trick (htc magic). It "solves" the issue but it means there is an extremely serious bug as a few failed logins and the null password is all it takes to gain access to the phone!

Just used the null trick myself. Ridiculous that such a simple null entry could bypass this security feature. (Ridiculous in the first place that my correct username and password wouldn't unlock my phone, also)
,
Dec 24, 2009
Hello, I can confirm, there is no security anymore in our android devices. What's the point in having such an unlock pattern system if it can be so easily passed through? I used the null password, and it unlocked perfectly! It sucks! Please Google, do react quickly...

@MissMoniqueMoore (#127), very nice find with that null trick. Thanks for sharing. But again guys, you are blowing your horns at the wrong place. This is a prematurely closed defect, please vent your anger about it here on the reopened one http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4784 Google will not listen on this closed defect. Please take some time and "Star" defect# 4784. Thanks!

At least I can now comfortably use the lock to keep this phone from dialing in my pocket, it will just run my battery down but not random dial.

I don't know what's worse, the fact that this huge bug still exists after 4 months or the fact that there are some many workarounds possible to get around this security feature.

I have an HTC Dream All I did was: 1. Call my phone 2. Press back (not end) 3. Go to settings (while the phone call is still going) 4. Turn off passcode lock (or whatever it's called) 5. End phone call. I will never use passcode lock again but this worked perfectly.

Jan 9, 2010
Hi , I've managed to lock my phone out too. Has any one successfully found a work around for a HTC Hero ( T-Mobile G2 in the UK). I've tried comment below to no avail :( I really didn't want to hard reset, I don’t see why I should have to, google/htc and the phone operators have a duty to find a work around and if they can’t then just let us know. Comment 126 – Changing the password at google.com ( not gmail) didn’t work for me. Comment 99 – spent hours trying to this unlock method but it didn’t work. Comment 132 - I've starred this one and am compiling a very angry email to google and htc due to the lack of support being recieved for this huge flaw. Why not give us the option of a PIN password and PUK code work around!!
,
Jan 9, 2010
Luckily I read up to the end of the thread, because the "null" password did the trick for me, while the press home tricks had not worked, so I suggest trying it. I'm going to star issue 4784 too, this is a serious bug.

I just had my Rogers 3 day old HTC Magic rebooted after trying dozens of time to sign
into Google after I got the screen pattern wrong. I tried with another rep. and his
remedy didn't work. I tried the methods on here and they didn't work. Here is what
a different Rogers told me today & it worked:
With the phone powered OFF:
1) Hold HOME button & START till the phone vibrates.
2) When the explanation mark shows up
hold HOME & START again
At that point some writing should show up on the screen - some in blue and some
in yellow
3) Using the tracball, slide your finger over it to select WIPE DATA.....
4) Click on this with the tracball
5) In yellow it will say wiping data.... etc for 3 or different functions. AT the
bottom of the list it will say "Complete" and in blue text "reboot...." will be
highlighted
6) Click on the reboot highlighted text with the tracball.
And it should be all OK! You will loose all your data but you will have a phone!

hello, this is the link that helped me http://pzportal.net/main/2009/12/andriod-os-patten- screen-lockout-bug/ it is the same as comm #28 On my htc magic I pressed back button while in call and then changed my google password. then i went to settings and selected synchronize now. I presented an error and i entered my password. Then (with my heart beating like hell) I locked my phone and it worked.
,
Jan 16, 2010
Fix it by holding Home+Red Button(power button) then you will see an exclamation mark in a form of a caution sign and an icon of a phone then you wait till the menue pops up the you choose to reset. I hope this helped:)

Jan 23, 2010
so, it seems that there is a different workaround for any model out there (dream, hero, droid). so read all these comments and i hope for you to finde your best workaround. i have a german htc hero (1.5) and comment #71 worked for me. *phew* basicly, with all these "hit the home button rapidly" you take advantage of your phones lagginess. so try to stress your phone (e.g. getting or ending a call is very stressfull) and irritate your phone with other commands. an other problem is that the password you have to enter on your phone is not checked online, it is saved on the phone so it is not neccesarily your recent gmail-password (look at the google comment in the beginning) i then had to reinforce a password sync and then the unlocking screen accepted the password. details in comment #71 for (german/european) htc hero (1.5)

#60 worked, I called my self with the home phone & machine gunned the home screen button for like 90 seconds & it worked. Never again will I do the screen pattern lock to keep my kids from messing with my phone. It's a new Android phone & at 1st I thought it was defective & then I thought to look into, could the kids lock me out of my phone. I can't believe this, I agree with everyone, there needs to be more info out there on this by Google. Buck
,
Jan 24, 2010
For the love of god, I should have read the part about the black triangle on top of the screen with the asterisk & not letting the phone go to sleep. I thought that after I reset my password on my Gmail & entered it on my phone, I was good. Well it didn't sync with the phone & now #60 won't work again. I thought I had the pattern turned off; however it must be in the software somewhere still as others have said. This is BS, you'd think Google would have a fix for this. The phone is a brick at this time. Should have bought an i-Phone.

Jan 27, 2010
My T-Mobile G2 Touch (HTC Hero) locked up and wouldn't respond to username and password. Worrying, and a bloody nuisance, but I didn't think I could the first person this had happened to, there must be a simple solution and Google was my friend. Unbelievable that it took till 23rd December, when MissMoniqueMoore posted the "null" password solution, for the issue to be resolved, 6 months after this thread was started. I feel sorry for everyone who didn't have the time to wait and had to wipe their phone and lose all their data. As "security" goes, this is hardly convincing. Anybody who's read this thread can get into a locked Hero. I'm surprised that nobody thought to verify that it was possible to unlock the phone in the way it was designed to be, and that nobody from Google was able to help here. I'm loving this phone. I'm still on the stock 1.5 firmware, and I'm expecting it to be even better when I upgrade. I hope there aren't any more nasty surprises waiting for me.
,
Jan 27, 2010
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! My 16 month old just locked up my Myphone and as I was reading all the comments was getting frustrated and angry that MY own username and password was NOT working! Thanks for the "null" information. It worked and I am now disabling my security pattern. It was a HUGE pain in the patoot to unlock this thing! Again, thanks!

Jan 29, 2010
I can confirm this on my stock Samsung Moment, firmware version 1.5. I can also confirm #48 works (http://blag.xkcd.com/2009/09/12/i-need-g1-tech-support/comment-page- 2/#comment-32560) near the bottom of the page. Good luck to those with issues

I have noticed that a lot of people lock them self's out of their samsung moment phones, including my self but i was able to get back into my phone without having to use my google username and pasword because for me it didn't work or with out having to go to sprint for a hard re-set. Here is how, Today i locked my self out of my phone after trying everything that everyone else claimed to do , which was useless for me, this is what i did to get back into my phone. 1) I called my phone from my fiances cellphone 2) without hanging up I began to slide the phone to use the keyboard over and over again , until the screen went to my home screen on the phone.( Very important when I did this my phone was charging on my laptop via USB, so the phone never had a chance to sleep, dont know if that helped) 3) still on the call, once the home screen came on, I made sure to bring up my menu, I went to settings and disabled the pattern screen lock.( Very important , do not hang up on the call keep it going until you have finished all the steps.) (note after you do this once the phone goes to sleep and you hit the red phone button to turn the phone on, the same screen asking for your google username and password will pop up, so try to keep the phone from sleeping.) 4) so what i did, i went online logged on to my gmail account and began saving all my contacts online. 5) once i backed up my contacts , i decided to factory data reset my phone. You will locate Factory Data reset by hitting your menu button>settings>SD card and phone storage> scrool down> Factory Data Reset. ( Note you will loose all your apps, but your music and pictures will still be saved on your phone, and once you log into your exsisting account all your contacts that you saved will be imported into your phone. Better to loose app than loosing everything all together.) 6) once i factory data reset my phone, the glich of the screen popping up asking for my gmail account info to unlock the phone was gone. I hope this is of some help to you guys that are having problems with your phone.

Guy's thanks it's 2 AM and finally after looking at all of solution one did really help me. I have a HTC HERO . On the username type you gmail username and on the password type null . This just happened to me. I entered "null" as the password and was then prompted for a new pattern. Thanks guys

Thanks so much!!! I was locked out as well and typed my username@gmail.com and entered in my password as "null" and was promted for a new pattern. THANK YOU!!

Feb 6, 2010
WOOOOOWWWW!!! I was finally able to get to the home screen by pressing repeatedly the home key while presing the emergency call button on the screen, but it was not before the 50th (at least) time I (desperately) tried it. Once there, went back to my PC, changed the gmail pw. Then shortly I got a sync error at the HTC and was prompted then to enter the new pw, entered the one I just defined in gmail, and synced the HTC. After turning of and on the phone, I got, as expected, back in the "exceeded pattern attempts" screen, but this time I entered my userid and the password I just changed and back again without loosing anything!!!! Mine was an HTC Magic with Krnl 2.6.29 and FW 1.6. Hope this helps someone. Thank you everyone!!!!

I have a Motorola Droid and locked myself out. Then, I found a post by another user (racer rae rae): http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=20885ba7c8378e4f&hl=en&fid=20885ba7c8378e4f00047f17b679a606 Due to the security flaw, I was able to set a new lock pattern and regain access to my phone without having to do a hard reset. Phew!

This issue has been ongoing since the first android device was released in the United States. I run into it several times a day working in Technical Care, I this issue really needs to be resolved and soon. This is the number one flaw in these devices, and there is no real explanation that has been given to us as to why this occurs.

Feb 9, 2010
Update of the password issue. I have the HTC HERO and had the same problem. But had the problem twice.the first time i had to put on the username@gmaill.com type and on the password type null . This just happened to me. I entered "null" as the password and was then prompted for a new pattern. But Then again i had the same problem .But i tried again with the null password. It didn't helped but then i tried my original username@gmail and password walla it really open again. so i guess the first time it's all about the null then the second time you will have to use your original password if you had gprs/3g or wifi connection after the first time that it was blocked.
,
Feb 10, 2010
Had the lock out issue. Children playing with my phone, this is what i did after many other attempts: Called from another phone, kept line open Slid down notifications from top of screen Opened missed calls list Chose a contact Went to menu Options Chose "send to contact" Then phone asked "what email address to send to" and gave me my information and I logged in from there. Removed lock code.

Feb 13, 2010
Omg! I couldnt believe it. I have the Htc Hero and after my boyfriend tried to get into my phone, it locked and had been locked all night because i couldnt figure out how to get in untill i came on here and i tried going to the emergency call screen, to the notifications bar, then pressed the sign in icon while beating the home key for about a minute or two repeatedly which finally brought me to my home screen and i went straight to changing my lock screen app and gmail account!
,
Feb 15, 2010
Samsung Galaxy Portal/Spica users - I just fixed the problem on my phone using a combination of previously suggested ideas. I clicked the 'Password' bar, and long- pressed the '?123' button onscreen, then i selected keyboard settings or options (whatever it says) nothing will appear. Then call the phone from another phone, and just before the phone starts to ring, an android keyboard settings screen should appear, answer the call, then press the back button to return to the settings, from there, hang up the call and it should return you to your home screen, go to settings and turn off the pattern lock, SORTED!
,
Feb 15, 2010
Edit:(got the order of tasks wrong) whilst still in the call, and on the android keyboard settings page, press the 'back' button again, to return to your menu, still in call, go into settings and turn off the pattern lock. I just redid this on purpose and it definetely works.

Comment 93 worked for me. Samsung Moment 1.5 with CL14 update installed. While I'm glad this worked, I am very concerned that I was locked out and that ANYONE could get around my lock code this way. I hope this is addressed when this phone is updated to 2.1.

Samsung moment screen lock fix After drawing wrong pattern then entering correct gmail id phone will still not unlock This may have been previously posted but here is exactly how I fixed mine 1 Open keyboard and call your phone from another phone. 2 End the call on other phone and press home button quickly. This will bring you to your home screen. 3 Disable security lock on phone. This will let you unlock your phone by opening keyboard, but sucks. 4 On your computer change your google password. This will cause a data sync error and ask you for new password. 5 Enter new password and press end button to lock the phone. 6 Enter

I too got the same problem on my HTC Hero after my friend decided he wanted to look at my phone. After multiple attempts at typing my email and password, which I knew to be correct, I decided to resort to the internet, and found this strand. I tried a few of the methods suggested but none of them worked. Eventually I stumbled across this link (https://www.google.com/accounts/UnlockCaptcha?) to Unlock the Google Captcha on your account. After doing that, I simply went back to my phone, and typed in just my username rather than the whole of my email address ('username'@gmail.com) with my account password, and the phone unlocked and prompted me to enter a new lock code. I understand that many people's problems are harder to unlock than mine, but before attempting something drastic, this only takes about a minute, and is worth a try. KB

so after about an hour of my HTC HERO being locked due to "too many attempts" i began to search for help. my gmail acct/pswd wouldnt work even though when i logged on to the computer it worked fine. after trying the "null" code IT DIDNT WORK. trying the "press the home button for a gazillion times" among many other "ways around the stupid deal" complications i decided to plug my usb in my phone and plug it in my laptop. i then sent myself an email to my gmail acct from another email acct. no more than 20 seconds later the email notification came to my phone i then clicked on notificiations. tapped on my email and BAM INSTANT WALLA!! it may not work for everyone but it worked for me thank GOODNESS. now i wont lose any info. hope this helps!

I hv tried the method explained by Bokkan #97 and it worked for my G1-dev phone with Android 1.6. I am really wondering if so many people are getting the same issue across all the android releases why Android guys are not working on it. This gives me more reasons to use ROM's available otherwise which gives a better supports at rooted ROMS forums.

using 'null' (which means to actually type in the word *null* as your password lets you reset the pattern. they must have slipped that in the last update....which allows me to get into ANY phone that uses android...security flaw much?

Power phone down Reboot screen: press and hold volume down, end key, and send key all at the same time. This will bring up the options for recovery, fast reboot, and clear storage. Press clear storage, will save pictures, videos, and songs. You will loose contacts, and apps. You will then need to setup your droid phone and sync with gmail. Hope this is helpfull.

Mar 8, 2010
I just got my Droid to unlock without having to do a hard reset. The first thing I did was a step thats not really necessary, but may come in handy. I called my phone. Upon doing that I was able to answer it. While the phone was in a call, I backed out of the screen and it took me to the home screen. I went to the menu screen and then went to Accounts & sync. I noticed that in addition to my normal Gmail account, I also had a gmail account of the same name, but with a Facebook icon next to it. Also, I had two youtube accounts in the listing. None of those accounts were synced to my phone, only the main Gmail account was, but I went ahead and typed in my Youtube username@youtube.com and the password for it and VOILA, it let me in. So try another account's credentials if you have more than one listed in the Accounts & sync section, even if those accounts aren't actually synced. Still try it, it worked for me. The only issue I had after that was that the sync was messed up for some reason. I don't know if it was a result of the lock out or if it was because I had turned on the wifi during a phone call while I was playing around with the settings. Either way, I fixed it with this link. http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py? answer=113869 I hope this helps.

Mar 13, 2010
I managed to repair this following #99 on HTC Hero, but I'm _extremely_ pissed with you Google. I'm starting to think that as long as a company makes more money they tend to become more and more out-of-touch with common sense. Just look at Microsoft for an example... Sadly Google isn't falling out of this rule either, and Apple is well ahead. Sad.
,
Mar 13, 2010
Type in you gmail address with the password null on Samsung Moment. It is very simple. If you have kids you need this.
,
Mar 15, 2010
null password worked. saved my butt. make sure you use the gmail account.
,
Mar 15, 2010
I can't believe this worked! HTC Hero. I was able to get into the Home screen by calling myself and while on call pressing the Home button repeatedly, then pressing the End Call button on the touch screen. I had to search around to find my Google account email that i setup initially. Once found, I followed #99. I'm so glad I found this thread. My dumb friend thought we could figure out the pattern. Needless to say he hasn't said a word for the last 5 hours.

what i did to unlock my phone was to call my phone with another phone then press the button back followed by disabling the security.... but after that even though i remove the security lock, the invalid google thing is still there after i re-set my new locks so, what i did was to did a hard reset to factory default

On my htc hero here is how I got my phone to unlock. I think it was this order. It happened really fast. :-) 1. changed my password on my gmail account. 2. made a call to my phone. 3. While on the call pulled down the top menu and hot the sign in/ authentic button. 4. A menu will pop up and ask you to put in your password to authenticate. (still on the call while doing this) I pulled up the keyboard by tapping in the password box or you can hit the menu key to get it to come up. Put in my new password and let it try to authenticate. (it cant because you are on the phone but let it try and give you the message that it is unable to authenticate) 5.After that end the call and go back to the screen that says enter you gmail username (your gmail email address) and password. Put in this information. It actual worked this time and it asked me to set a new unlock pattern. so I did the pattern twice and ended up at my home page. Only had to do this once. I did not get the multi tap on the home key fix to work for me. hope this helps people

Comment 211 - Rocknasta!! Thank you so much! I've been going crazy since yesterday, my daughter locked me out of my phone. Sprint only said they could do the master re-boot. I was scared to lose my contacts and photo's. This is the one that worked for me! However on earth you figured this out, I have no idea. But Thank you for posting this :)

Just happened on my Droid Eris. I'm not fully sure what I did but here's what I can remember. I got my dad's phone and called mine, answered it, and spammed the home button to no avail. I then pulled down the menu from the top of the screen and went to advanced task killer at which point i was asked for my password. I entered it and it accepted it, then allowed me to kill all apps. From there it suddenly jumped to my unlock pattern somehow, as if i had prompted it to create a new one, and i just entered my old one and confirmed it. I then went to settings and turned the unlock pattern off, just in case. i turned the screen off and back on, and the problem was solved. Hope this helps

THANKS PPL. I've spent ~3hrs on googling about this issue. Now I only regret that I've started to read this thread from top, not from the bottom ;) Entering "null" as password was the only thing that worked on Samsung Galaxy Spica (i5700) with Android 1.5 (2.6.27 Cupcake.XXILA). Other tricks like 'tapping home button' etc. did nothing. So thank You once more.

i'v purchased an android 1.5 phone. samsung spica i5700.the screen has got locked and i'm not able to unlock it by all the methods i'v mentioned below- 1. by resetting from test screen 2. by going thro safe mode 3. by pressing home key while booting 4. by trying to change settings while on a call. the turn off does ask for the previous pattern in order to deactivate this option. 5. by trying to do a master reset/ factory setting while on call. it asks for previos pattern for factory setting. 6. by going to gmail or you tube while on call. i had not configured it for net settings. it got locked in three hours of purchasing. when trying the g mail or you tube option it tries to go to the net but says that the sim or service provider are not permitting. 7. by continuously typing five patterns, it only locks for 30 seconds before permitting to carry on trying and does not go to gmail account. samsung service centre says that since the fone is new they have no details for rectifying quirks. please help me out.

Acer Liquid, Android 1.6 - Password changed - a lot of trys - triangel in right upper (Developer-relevant, I think...) I can answer what the curious triangle with the exclamation point stands for: A lot of users report this triangle, but not all. Eventually a lot of users won't see this triangle or didn't report this triangle. In some forums the people means, it stands for a non-hardware-failure, a wipe is the only way. But this triangle opened the dialog with the safety-code in a blurry type, waiting for correct typing. (I guess the correct spelling for sending the password for verification) If the safety-code was spelled correctly, the (new) password will be accepted immediately. But the safety-code didn't appear because: The 'incorrect username/password'-dialog stands before the safety-code-dialog. I suspect this dialog for a lot of problems here. It occours after some misspelled attemps, impartial of a 'new' or 'old' password. Oh yes: Didn't try 221. But 48 works for me partial fine.

Comment 93 by mehdi24 works great, no data lost off of the phone at all !!!!! I could kiss you if i knew where you are in the world Finally figured out to bypass that annoying email/password screen, i think this could solve problem for many peoples who do not want to Hard reset their gphone : - Make a call to your gphone and respond.

I cant believe this has been going on for so long and all these new phones are coming out with this problem. i have the xperia x10 and am locked out within a week! not found a solution despite reading through this. Sony offered to reset it if i send it to them and pay their fees! Dont even know how to reset this phone myself. Anyone any info please?
,
Apr 8, 2010
Hero I was locked out of my phone for a day and a half and did a lot of researching on how to get back in. I refused to go the hard reset route and the "null" thing didn't work for me. I honestly don't see how that would work being that "null" is not exclusive to being a password in general...hmmm. Anyway, after playing around with the phone, calling myself from another phone and texting myself once I realized I could access those, I figured it out. The key is that you must be on a wifi network in order to get the necessary web access that allows for your password to actually validate. 1. have someone (or log onto your carriers site) send you a text with any web address in it 2. call your cell from another phone and stay connected 3. pull down the menu and go to the text with the web address 4. click on the web addres 5. message should appear stating that you cannot connect and you have the option to go to settings or cancel. choose settings 6. go to wifi and choose a network that does not require you to validate on a webpage. for instance, using starbucks "free" network will not work. using your home wireless connection should. you will now notice that you are able to use the web. 7. pull down the menu shade and click on the sign in/authenticate button (i'm tired and can't remember what it actually says) 8. enter your password. it should now be able to authenticate since you now have the wifi connection 9. end the call and you will be thrown back to the standby screen. 10. reenter your username and password 11. you should be asked to recreate your lock code.... you win. rodjohn

This happened on my Verizon Droid; 2.1-update1 1. I enabled the unlock gesture 2. I used the gesture for several days 3. Then tested several bad gestures, 4. I was prompted for my google account to unlock (which worked) 5. A day later I changed the gesture (and also hid the path that is drawn) 6. Tried to unlock the phone, it did no work 7. I then tried to unlock with my google account, it did not work 8. I tried rebooting to no avail, finally I ended up doing a hard reset.

I have a droid, it's all of a week old, and I'm guessing the Android 2.1 release has disabled all the workarounds, because none of these are working for me. Also, I'm in this fix because the pattern unlock screen wouldn't accept my pattern. I know my pattern very well, but I've found that once or twice a day it's like the touchscreen intermittently stops sensing your finger, so the pattern you draw correctly is broken up into two or three incorrect patterns. In every other case I've been able to get it to work after the first few tries, but last night was different. You can believe I was carefully drawing the pattern the last 25 times I tried to get it to work.

A dutch HTC Hero user here.. fix number 93 worked great! - call your htc with your housephone and pick up the androidphone - smash the home button on your htc phone.. like as fast as you can! - hang up the connection with your house phone.. - you are now in the home screen.. - go to gmail and change your password (be aware to keep your htc hero busy like rubbing it like every 10 seconds) - a sync-error will pop up - give in your new password - click on the hang up button - you now can give in your emailadress and your password - this time it DOES work properly! So thnx to the community and FUCK YOU Google!! This is pure crap.. if this isn't fixed in the 2.1 update you guys are so not listening to the crowd!

I found the solution Well actually my little brother found it 1) call your mobile from another phone 2) receive the call 3) hold the call 4) the home menu will come 5) change your Google account password or get rid of the pattern lock This worked on my brother's galaxy portal I5700 or something It should work on other phones as well I spent about 2 hours doing the other techniques but they did not work so I hope this works for your phone.

Bloody hell, found the null password trick too! How pathetic can you get? Google, where you cant throw a gourmet bagel with out hitting a "brain the size of a planet" PhD allows this security hole (the size of the channel tunnel) to continue to exist! Unreal.

This worked for me. Locked my phone too, had someone call my phone then I answered the call. I pressed the home button while ending the call and it took me to my home screen. Then I just went to settings and sync my phone with gmail (I changed the password online first). Let your phone time out and hit the home button as if unlocking. Then just enter your gmail account and your NEW password and your set it will unlock. I typed all the passwords I could remember before I tryied this, so dont be worried about locking it for ever, lol.

"null" as the password worked for me on my HTC Evo. It's annoying because this is a big security risk in case anyone ever wants to hack my Hero. 1 year of this and they still can't fix this problem? Hyperannoying. Anybody could pick up my phone, break the pattern, use my e-mail address and "null" and get my info

I figured out a way to get past the screen lock "too many attempts" problem without doing a hard reset on my phone. I called my Phone (from my Skype account :) so I could get to the notifications pull down. (couldn't get to home screen or setting from the call) But, I could pull down my notifications. I had a "new email" notification so I clicked on it so that my gmail would open. I then opened an email that had a URL link in it and I clicked on the link. This then opened my browser, which tried to open the link but, it couldn't because, I was still on my Skype call. This prompted the browser to give me an error message that had a Settings button. I clicked on the settings button and was able to turn on my wi-fi and connect to my home network ( I couldn't get to any other settings). At this point I pulled down my notifications again and clicked on the sign in failure notification and this time my phone was able to authenticate my gmail password, through the wi-fi connection. FYI, I had to go to gmail and change my password as I'd forgotten it. If you don't remember your password you'll have to go through the gmail, I forgot my password/reset process. If you have email notifications turned off, I think you can send a URL link through with a text message but, I've never done that. Maybe someone else can chime in on how to do that. It's probably pretty simple. Lemme know if this works for you.

Apr 30, 2010
Hi! I've just tried this out of curiousity and found out that the bug does not exist any more on my phone (HTC Hero). I did lock my phone once and had to do a hard reset to get it back but now it seems to work just fine! I've locked it and put the wrong password in 5 times, then pressed forgot password button and unlocked it successfully with my gmail+pw. (I've changed the pw since it was locked the last time but it is the same gmail that didn't work back then) I've done this procedure three times now and it really do works. Also, the trick with "null" as password does NOT work for me. So, i guess i would say that my security works just fine! :) Can this be the result of an update from Google? Because I haven't, in my knowledge, updated my phone.. ever! Or is it possible that this works for me because i'm not connected to the internet via WiFi but via my GPRS? otherwise, I have no idea why this works for me. Best of luck!

Comment 26: I got as far as: "clicked on the sign in failure notification and this time my phone was able to authenticate my gmail password, through the wi-fi connection" but didn't have the sign in failure notification? How do I get that and how do you authenticate your gmail account. I went to google and signed in but that then what?

I just read the bottom threads to see what was working for people and missed or no one said to actually type 'null' as the password. To me null means leave blank. So those that are still stuck, enter your gmail email address and type null as the password. That worked for me.

Phone: Motorola Droid OS: Android 2.1 Tried a few ideas on here with no luck yet. This is ridiculous that this has not been resolved in almost an entire year. Here's the solution to unlock without losing your data: Type you gmail username and in the password field type "null". You will then be prompted to enter a new pattern and your phone will be unlocked. I just did this on my HTC, worked perfectly. But this is retarded that it has to come to this making my password unusable and then not even necessary.

I fixed this by starting the phone as normal. Then when the screen appears that wants you to type the google username and password you call your phone. This works and lets you press HOME to get to your menu. From the menu you just disable the patternlock.

It is absolutely ridiculous that this issue hasn't been fixed! I got locked out of my phone today and it if wasn't for the messages on this forum I would have been screwed! Orange the network provider were useless don't even phone them. They only gave me an HTC phone number which was never picked up! Use the following solution from Mikel.Wiseman's post! You’re a star mate! and your right what’s the point in this security feature if you can get around it! Not that I'm ever going to use it again! --- Comment 283 by Mikel.Wiseman, May 15 (2 days ago) Here's the solution to unlock without losing your data: Type you gmail username and in the password field type "null". May 22, 2010
I've had this issue on both my wife's eris and my droid. On her eris, I was able to work around it using the hack when getting a call. My droid apparently had that patched out. I'm fairly surprised that the hack to fix it was removed, but the bug itself was ignored entirely. But I suppose 9 months is a fairly short window for an issue that only bricks phones. It's not like they catch on fire, right? Much as I love my droid, this is making me cautious about recommending them to anyone that has children under the age of 6. Which is just about everyone I know....

I have a HTC Hero. I have tried everything except hard reset which I do not want to do, but I think I will have no choice. I have loads of music, apps, contacts, photos, messages and games which I have been building up for months, and tomorrow I will have to lose it all to the f....g reset!!! Shame on you Google moth.....ers. You have not given us any direction and you have been pretty quiet and letting the community do all the work. Are you guys for real. You haven't a clue how frustrating it is to spend two full day on this shit and not get anywhere. Those of us writing in is only a small minority I'm sure. Fucking wake up Google and give us a hand.

It seemss the solution suggested in this thread (null as password) does not work / is not a security breach: Issue 8499 was denied just now.

Hello other frustrated people, I certainly agree that this is a major malfunction on the android phones. I have an HTC hero from Sprint. I purchased the phone and had it flashed for Cricket. I was never able to "sync" my phone with my gmail account, since I had it flashed. I always saw the "sync error" icon appear in my top bar, but never cared. I am not able to download apps without being synced, but can do pretty much anything else. I loved my new phone, until I pocket locked it. I can't sign in without the gmail account registered to the original owner of the phone. Now i am locked out of my HTC Hero with no chance of getting synced. Rubbish technology!!!!! I am def gonna get an IPHONE next. I have never encountered a manufacturer that just IGNORES claims and problems from their consumers. This would never happen with the Apple IPhone Thanks again Google. You have lost my business FOREVER. I am even switching my homepage to YAHOO. Please everyone who reads this do the same. Google technicians MUST provide answers if they want to keep there reputation and customer base. FU Google

Still FU Google, But I have found a solution that should work for everyone. This was discovered by users, with NO HELP FROM Google support. here is the link to a thread that should solve your problem. Good luck people. Don't give up just yet! http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=5b3e13649f9a0bde&hl=en

Hi all i had the excat same problem my little bro entered the wrong visual pattern to many times and i had to type in my google account. but A) i coudnlt actually remeber it, as i use hotmail and B)all variations of what i could remember of the e- mail and password. ( should have written it down. The only option i could find to get my phone working again was to reboot and wipe my phone. WARNING: you will lose all contacts messages internet cahces etc. and will restore factory settings procede with caution To reboot and wipe the phone bascily: Turn off the power to the phone Hold the Home key and Power key at the same time until it turns on wait for a warning triangle and a ! to come up, then press the home key and power key at the same time again a reboot screen should come up scroll town using the trackball and press wipe Once wiped, press reboot and the phone will get rid of everything and return it to the factory settings (yes, im afraid you lose all messages, emails, internet cache etc. unless they are backed up elsewhere) PLZ do not post comments and hold me responsible for you losing any data i posted a warning telling you what would happen. I just encountered the same problem that everyone else has had on this page (I have the HTC Hero by Sprint), buddy of mine was messin around on my phone while i wasn't there, too many attempts and got the email/password prompt, which led to automatic denial/invalid username or password. I've tried every suggestion on here and none of them worked for me, was up til 6:30 this morning trying to figure it out. I did remember though, off the android market I downloaded a program called "myLookout" it backs up all your contacts, photos, and apps you have stored on your phone. I was worried as I hadn't gotten my photos backed up, but then thought they're all saved on the micro-sd card, so as I had a majority of my phone backed up, I removed the card and did a reset on my phone to factory settings. This morning I restored my data, reinserted my card, and I have everything. Just gotta get it all set up the way I had it before but not too worried about that, just happy to have all the important stuff. So if there's anyone else that you know or you yourself have an android phone, I strongly suggest to download this one app, even if its the only app you ever download, it is WELL worth it.

GOT IT TO WORK WITHOUT RESETTTTTING!!!!! I have a htc hero by the way I called myself, answered, hit home and then menu and then home and then menu etc... then i hung up the phone and straight away pressed home... takes u 2 home, then i turned off all the security settings - screen lock crap.... changed my google password online.... disabled and then enabled sync.... it asked for new password... then i got one final screen prompt from the screen lock crap, so i entered my mail address @googlemail.com and the new password and works FINE

Any solution that do not involve hard reset fails for me on my htc magic (android 1.6) excepted this one : WITHOUT RESETTING : type your username without the @domain.tld and type password 'null' without quote to unlock. example : gmail user : toto@gmail.com would enter toto and null google apps user toto@mycompanydomain.com would enter : toto null it works for me on my htc magic. Lost my Droid @ Sam's Club and some kid found it luckily but, he tried to unlock it and when I got it back I ran into this unlock issue. Searched here and on motorola's forum with no luck on a solution. When I went to AndroidForums.com one guy had a solution that was unique to all of the rest and didn't require a hard reset or loss of data. See copy and paste below! It worked on my Motorola Droid 2.1 without a hitch, so f*&king glad I didn't call VZW's tech support or go through some of the challenges you all faced!!!! Good luck to those of you still suffering!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For me it was the last account that I added to android. When I setup my phone I added my primary account first and my secondary accounts next. The one that unlocks the phone is the last account that I entered. Example If you added the accounts in this order to droid: 1@gmail.com 2@gmail.com 3@gmail.com You would have to unlock droid with 3@gmail.com chris ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BTW!! I used my 2nd gmail entry (only had 2 accounts setup) to access "choose a new pattern" screen. 2ndgmail (name only no @gmail.com) password

While turning on the cell hold down the home button till Android system recovery appears on d screen 2. Wipe out everything by selecting wipe... Then do the partition thing...Then flash update image...and then reboot system! After doing all this...the cell gets hanged on the green my touch screen!!! I cant get through it!! kids just locked me out about an hour ago, and I couldn't get in. I tried for a half hour with old password combinations... I never use gmail so I figured it was my fault, but it sounds like other have the same issue even though they knew their password. Anyway I reset my gmail password online and was able to get into through the PC but but still no luck with the phone. I then found this website tried all the suggestions to no avail and nearly gave up.... Then, after another half hour, I tried again with the same password I tried fifty times before and this time it asked me to set a new pattern. I suspect it just took that long for the password change to propogate to all the servers. Hope this helps. (moto droid)

I have tried with the solution given by mansonthomas (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3006#c304) and surprisingly it worked! It seems to be a hug bug and compromises the mobile security. I hope it will be fixed soon!

Frusting but finally in. Used comment 127 - thanks very much Miss Monique Moore. Enter registered Googlemail address without the 'gmail.com' or 'googlemail.com' at the end and type 'null' in the password field and thankfully got in. Was then prompted to enter another pattern. Pain in the rear but not that pattern is coming off!

I have tried absolutely everything. (I have Moto Droid) (not totally sure what version im running) .... I am able to log into the gmail online fine. (even tried previous passwords used) 1. Pressing home/Emergency dialer option Constantly didnt take i briefly see the homescreen but it fades back to the pattern attempts option tried for 30 min cant get to it AT ALL. 2. Tried combinations with Email, and null as Password. 3. Tried adb shell via USB (cant execute any commands because i cant get into su mode unless anyone knows a way to root without LOSING ANY DATA) 4. Tried the calling method in many different flavors but it didnt work not sure if google knew of ways to get back into the home screen and it was fixed on the 2.1 update. I have all the Acct info im able to log in its just sad because my brother died and this was his phone and i want to see his last texts and stuff before he went. 5. Tried searching the WIFI mode but it wont work it at all. 6. ive been searching and searching for a few days and i need to get the data not sure though if Verizon can do something over the air. 7. My next guess or best is trying to do a update.zip that WONT lose any data but will enable me to go back into the Email screen or Even the Pattern lock (which i also know) .... Tried Seaching for like a GOOGLE fix like update.zip to make it actually work how it should. BUT NOT LOSE any data at all. but im not sure if this has the 2.01 or if its 2.1 im sure it might be 2.1 because any methods of ways ppl got in i couldnt plus i read they pushed a OTA update back in March. Thanks.... google please have a update.zip bug fix for just this so i can apply it without losing anything or if you have one posed my email is Ritztech@gmail.com thanks

I have a Motorola Droid running Android 2.1. A friend of mine took my phone and after many failed pattern attempts, arrived at this screen. I tried both of my Google accounts (my Gmail and my university Google Apps), and neither worked. I tried both with the @gmail.com and without it. I ended up needing to return to the Verizon Store, where they did a hard reset of my phone. They did not know about any of the supposed solutions in this thread. This needs to be fixed ASAP.

I second that the comment " *** T H I S W O R K S!!!! *** On the screen that you should be entering your login account and password, 1/ enter your email "xxx@gmail.com" as normal 2/ enter the word "null" as the password BOOM! i have my phone back!! " Works, it did for me!

How can google ignore an issue like this for over a year? Moto Droid, 2.1, no solution on this forum works for it. Null, open-close frantically and pressing home, nothing works. I'm very disappointed in the Android team right now. I will probably have to hard-reset my phone.

A Solution!!! HTC DREAM G1 running v1.6 Used Solution #93 and it worked. I got some access first by using #26. That meant I could access my phone but needed to open teh physical keyboard EVERY time as the "too many attempts" page keeps coming up until the keyboard is open - and this was not a workable solution. After #26 I tried #93. It only worked after I made sur ethe phone did not go back to screen sleep (disabled that in MENU> SETTINGS > Sounds & Dispay > SCreen timeout > Select "never"). then changed Gmail password and synced the phone, the triangle notifictaion icon came up, new password went in and the phone worked again ... even asked for a pattern lock again. I then changed my gmail password back to the original, resynced the phone and all remains good.... ponycar95@gmail.com

And after around an hour on worries, I finally found a solution to unlock after your phone rejects your password.
Just write your email address, and type "null" in Password field, without quotes ("")
And phone will unlock...
Works on my HTC G2 Touch...
And no doubt, it's such a Bug, and this solution is a proof that how vulnerable this locking system is...

FIX for HTC Desire owners!!! 1) Be at a WIFI connetion your phone knows and can connect by itself 2) Call the phone from another phone and leave the line open 3) Press home from the call and enter your code now, it worked for me! This forces the authentication to go through WIFI instead of the mobil internet and solved the issue for me on my Desire, that had been locked for 50 hours, horrible ! Non of the above mentioned workarounds worked for me. This forum post lead me to the fix http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f7/definitive-unlock-pattern-defeat-31771/

This is a disgrace to android. I had the phone for four days before my brother did this and locked me out. Email and password doesn't work, nothing works. It doesn't even work when I do it while in call. After entering my username (without "gmail.com"), my phone hangs at "Checking" I guess this is one step ahead of where it was rejecting everything immediately. I tried null and my password and it hangs on both. HTC Evo 4G - Android 2.1 - Not Rooted

Did a quick check of what works on Android 2.1 [update 1]/HTC EVO 4g, and sadly only #311 seems to work, which requires you to already have more than one gmail account set up on your phone before you are locked out. I'm trying to see if changing the password on my primary account gets me farther then the "invalid username/password" screen, but no luck yet after waiting for an hour after changing the password. None of the username combinations, nor NULL as the password worked for me. #93 did not work for me as hitting any of the home or back button in call took me to the lock pattern again. anybody else on a different version of android/phone have a list of what works and what does not=> for a problem that has persisted over multiple versions of android, it might help people with the same problem get it fixed faster if we had a list of what worked on what system after what update etc... --I was able to get back into my phone originally through a loophole involving the app "quick settings." Before I was locked out, I luckily had the quick menu of the app set to launch from the notifications bar - Calling from another phone, I was able to bring down the notifications bar and open the quick menu for the app, letting me deselect the lock setting. When I got my phone unlocked I decided to test out the rest of the suggestions posted here[once I knew I could get my phone working again if things didn't work] as there still seem to be a lot of people having the problem, and having your phone bricked is not the most fun of experiences...

HTC Hero Android on Orange now usable (i wouldn't say completely fixed) using a combination of the above... I've spent about 36 hours on this (need sleep!!) and so my result is shared here and is repeatble :) * get to the screen where it ask for username and password * click in either field so that the keyboard appears * click "emergency calls" * from here slide down the notifications window * repeatedly click (machine gun stylee) the HOME button and single click the notification that is about being unable to log in * the home screen appears! If it does not, go back and start this process again. It seems to work every 3rd time for me so I hope it works for the next person. Then: (lifted in full from http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google%20Mobile/thread?tid=460c4539746cc2f0&hl=en ) IMPORTANT! Go to <Settings> -> <Security & location> -> Uncheck <Require pattern> so now no pattern is required :) Then Go to your <Settings> -> <Applications> -> <Manage applications> -> <Goggle Apps> Step 2) Hit the <Clear data> button!.. this clears the saved hash version of the password ... (meanwhile, create a new google account! this time, remember the password! ) Access Android Market from your phone This application will access your Google Account stored data and found out it is gone (since you clear it above). It will ask you to key in again! I am stuck here - it is telling me it can't reach the server and to try again later. I've tried many times and am wondering if anyone else got this far... but at least I can now get into my phone to use it and all other apps (connectbot, opera, tweeter, mail, etc) are working... just no Market ... thanks to all those above who contributed answers :) Sean

I had the same problem happen, and reading up on the issue I found someone suggesting to enter "null" as the password on the lock-out screen. This worked fine and allowed me to keep all of my data intact. Hope this works.
,
Aug 4, 2010
Had this exact issue on a brand new Samsung Captivate. Phone got locked out after too many incorrect patterns. No biggie, right? Did not accept google log-ins after dozens of attempts. Samsung informed me that the issue was with the Android system as a whole, and that the only solution was to flash the phone. Hard reset or wipe would not work. Unbelievable that this issue was closed, as it is still happening and could lead to bricking.
,
Aug 7, 2010
I am able to reproduce this issue on the Samsung Vibrant from T-Mobile. Put in the wrong unlock pattern 5 times attempt to unlock with known good Google credentials. error returns "Invalid username or password". @gmail.com is pre-populated. Attempted pulling the battery and reboot of the device. Same results. This needs to be fixed ASAP!
,
Aug 7, 2010
Note: Typing "null" on the Samsung Vibrant TMO variant returns the same error for me. I attempted with both my email address and "null" as the password and with the username field blank and "null" in the password field.

OK, I just had this problem and fixed it. I had to change my Gmail password (using webmail from my PC) back to my original password that was used to originally register the phone. Hi, I locked myself out of my Samsung Moment. Too many pattern attempts. My gmail password does not work. I don't care how many accounts I created and deleted. Sprint is no help - advised to bring the phone in for hard reset. NOT HAPPENING. Ran across the call cell from different phone (home if possible / hang up the home phone (quickly)/ while tapping the home screen button. ACCESS AT LAST. However, I cannot uncheck the "Require Pattern" in the security screen. Ok. I've been at this for 12+ hours. I went to the Droid Marketplace and found this application: "LockPattern OnOff" by CurveFish. Install the application and, per the application, choose a blank space on your home screen. Did this and got a big button. What!! It has an on/off switch!!! Success.... Testing this out, I turned off the phone and WTF the phone was locked again. Opened it up and there it is... ACCESS and more ACCESS. Try it. The "reset option" only reboots. The calling your cell phone works / add this option and there you go. I've been working on this since 12p yesterday. I am not a whiz kid so when I see something that works - - I broadcast!!! Good Luck!
,
Aug 29, 2010
Had the "Too many pattern attempts" issue but when putting the correct un and pw in it would just hang on "checking". Here is the fix: put in your google email for un and an incorrect password the FIRST time. The "checking" pop-up will appear and go away. Now put in the correct password.

I have found the reset combo for the Samsung Apollo (i5800 & i5801). Since I'm Dutch, my solution has been posted on Tweakers.net, with images about all the steps you have to take. With Google Translate you can see the story in your language but most important is the reset combo: volume up + home + power. You will see at first a normal boot-up screen, but after that the options, like factory reset. The story and step-by-step guide has been posted here: http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_message/34608693#34608693

Same problem on my Galaxy S with stock 2.1 firmware on Vodafone Romania. Not to mention that I've also got the 3 buttons issue on my Galaxy hence I cannot even hard reset it. I was running away from Windows Mobile and now I ended up with this.

Just bought a new Wildfire and have experience the same problem: Screen locked - too many pattern attemts, sign in with your google account. As the phone is brand new I hadn't even set up a google account yet but i have now set one up but i still cant fix the issue. Any suggestions please?

I'm sorry, but this is bullshit. I was playing around with the fancy lock and did not expect this sort of critical bug to pop out on me. I have a new Samsung Galaxy S and am now locked out permanently. The 'null' trick doesn't work, nor does the spamming home button trick. I've now wasted 400 pounds unless I can somehow get it replaced. This bug has been around for a year and it still hasn't been fixed. Get your act together Google. I've been a staunch Google supporter for years but this is inexcusable.

Great that they have closed this issues, as it is NOT solved.
,
Sep 25, 2010
Hello, I solved the problem.
(greatly by dumb luck, my greatest weapon, controled subcontiously, of corse ;D )
[DISCLAIMER]; This is based on (in my opinion), a combonation of effects from apps on the phone. Details will be listed below. I hope this helps with more than it's humor~
Key Apps and stimuli incudes and are needed (pre-instaled)
-Alarm Clock Plus app.
-GOTO app.
-USB hardware cable.
-computer to trigger USB responce factor.
The history of the phone "Motorola Droid", sent as replacement within seven monthes of the "ghost in the screen{gits} bug" (hardware issue), I bought the first when they came out, Phone is carried in left front pocket, at work(sun and sweaty, maybe a factor of the "gits bug?"), protective film over display(purchesed at Virision store), dust and sodium causeing keyboad sider bracket to be rough. a few days ago i realized that "gits bug" was back again.. *sigh*~
Current Operation Situation(Progressional); pattern look enabled; 7am today I downloaded "GoTo" from "Freeandroidware.com" smart comments anyone?
I liked it so kept it. Hot part of the day and I'm tring out that cool new, with the pantz, pattern dance, and "ello gov'ner." was all i could think of as my primal earge told me ther's bad jojo a'foot. (First thoughts were "This app, that i just downloaded, from a site like that, is now asking me, for my G-account/pw... Think I'm that stupid? haha"
As it turned out. I made a verry insoulting temp. Gmail acount with equaly insoulting password, for not even, a good hardy laugh.. bah!~ (hopeing I'd piss off some rookey)
After trying all different login name/pw arrangments I happened upon a replicable easter egg method. Read on~
At this time the screen would be hibernated but would resume display a second later with out any phisical interaction( multiple tests run on the spot) "gits bug"? "with the pants pattern dancers" put yo hands up, put yo hands up!! And thus I (seemingly) [thanks for the good humor comment 9], entered the pattern too many times induceing my pre-issue, your current. [DISCLAIMER]** -At this point all i could do was scrole the slider across for a teasey preview of my messages, missed calls, and new mail. But yet with such a lovely UI, at least my day wasn't complete shit.
My next attemp, still under the identity threat assumption, was to USB to my computer and try to force my way in. This added the trigger of the solution as it activates my "Alarm Clock Plus" app later in the sequence to unlock the phone. sequencual order follows as read below below)~
After realizing that I was too lazy to research and learn the Lynix op. system tonight and settled that for now i couldnt get in. Can't USB sync if the screen is locking you out lol. BTW it's the weekend after a brutal 9 hour day. So instead i swopped to researching through google about a possible quick fix. Finding none. This Jolly Forum merely intised me to post this here is all :)
With nothing to be found than a stale-mate with my phone i resorted to video games and everyone's favorite herbs. Soon followed by an idea to test the "Menu" sensore button on the droid while on the enlightened disply of my new 5 feature, bad-ass, "droid dose" phone. 7 features if you include the next screen option with it's "Sign In-Nazi" button.
Oh says I? a white box pops up with "settings" inside. Inside i found these options:
[GOTO Settings
[General
[ Enable GOTO [Checked]
[ Run GOTO Setup
[ Owners Name *
[ Play Unlock Sound [checked]
[ Disable home key [checked]
[ Disable Volume/Camera []
[ etc...
Now I'm assuming it's the GOTO apps fault. So I Disabled it. Missing a step from memory here, it's possible that this dosen't matter because the net step i took would be the progression point to the solution. As my best quess would have been, me setting the device down to resume the ever addicting zombie beating sessions in my favorite game. The screen would have timedout setting up for this happening of chance.
With the USB cable still connected to my phone sitting on my lap. I take my chances and power down for a restart. Now with my lovely GOTO app not running at start up. I find my phone at the Black Screen of Insanity. with no where else to go and now a shitty night.. no more previews of the messages I can't get to like on those dateing web sites that want you to pay :(
So my next reasoning was a possible reaction as mentioned before *pharagraph #6, and probable new interactions from the app "Alarm Clock Plus." Which untill now would direct me back to the Lockout screen I was thinking about having put on a T-shirt.. Profit there? no.
But now as mentioned in pharagraph #10 realted now to #6 and the USB cable suplying nothing more then a charge and the "Notion Bar" (newly view-able at the top with my "new mail" icon, 3G,[bars], battery, and time)
Now either unplugging or replaugging the USB cable. The Notificaton bar displays the "USB" icon. Leading to the triggering (time of day being night; recognized by "Alarm Clock Plus" thus bring me back into it's screen. Where as this was useless before, now the buttons at the 4 bottom were operating properly. By pressing the (On-Screen "Home" icon. Not the phisical button) I was taken Home ^_^
It seems that this only works around the problem and if the screen times out. I goes back to the Lock-out screen. But as I said before, this method can be done replicated as a working, temp, loop hole, past this issue.
There's a lot more to this I'm sure such as me providing a listing of apps, opperations, data, etc. I'll watch this forum and if need be. Can post additional info tho I feel it of no real importance.
Now that you(the reader) can possibly repeat what I have done. You should have an open indow into your phone and I would seggest your first steps through to be to your phone's settings. Where you can disable your pattern (should disable lock screen there too as it will possibly apper to pesture you if the method should be altered and still work as my tests have proven to me.
Best of luck to all of you and hope this gets around~
Be safe.

Restart the phone and the moment you see the emergency dialer when your phone is all slow and shitty tap emergency and home over and over until you get back in the main phone it told me I had no recent apps and went back into home screen instead of lock. Worked first try for me

Okay after playing around with the phone for a bit no one else's method of fixing it was working for me even changing settings.db, I figured out it was due to me having a facebook account added AFTER I added my google account, so it's literally trying to login to your facebook. I added a third account my other google and attempted to log in with that, worked and I set up a new unlock code

Samsung i9000 Galaxy S Too much attempts to introduce the correct pattern to unblock it. The problem: Dear: A few weeks ago I bought a Samsung i9000 S Galaxy, with the function "unlock pattern" working. A few days ago a co-worker playing with my phone, tried several times to unlock it by entering the wrong pattern, which occasions that the phone will block indefinitely. As an option to unlock it you need to enter valid user name and password associated with your phone's Gmail, it is there that begins my big headache. I tried entering my username and password which was associated with the phone but told me that the data was incorrect, I clarify that I have configured, enabled and operating a 3G data connection but I could not make it work. I read countless posts where indicated a number of possible solutions, from testing with password "null", try without the "@ gmail", try "@ googlemail.com", etc, but without success. I also tried typing the hidden codes of hard-reset, but do not work because it only allows emergency calls. Obviously I tried turning off the phone, start in recovery mode with all possible combinations of buttons and even tried to flash the rom connecting the phone via usb cable and try to start it in "download mode" but the combinations of buttons do not respond, the phone starts without stopping. You say I have had not enabled the "USB debugging mode". As indicated in this post http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3006 the problem that I cannot unlock the phone through my GMail account is due to a bug of the Android Operating System. I contacted the seller and told me he has a phone like mine with the same problem and have given no solution yet, I also got in touch with the support of Samsung, which I am still waiting for a response. Clearly this problem is due to an operating system failure, if you also added the keylock that comes from factory to enter in "recovery mode", "download mode", etc. It is a very complicated situation with the phone because I tried everything with no luck. The number of people affected with this problem is growing and still there is no solution from Samsung and Android. I thought the Galaxy was a phone i9000 S without problems, but clearly I was mistaken. After much fighting with the local Service Samsung in Uruguay, in the Call Center in Argentina and Spain, all we received were automatic responses to emails sent to Samsung with this reply "You should contact the local Service Center, the only solution left was to find a solution on my own. I would emphasize that Samsung service is very bad The solution: 1) I put my SIM card 2) I called from another phone and answered the call 2) Press the touch button that is on the left winged “home” button 3) There appears a menu with 3 options, "Contacts", "Notes" and "SIM services” 4) I selected "SIM services" and lower the drop-down menu at the top. 5) Press the home button (the square in the middle), I went to the main menu, Settings, Privacy and data factory reset. I lost all installed applications and some data but I got my phone back, hope you find it useful. Besides the problem of not being able to unlock the phone to my GMail account due to a bug in the operating system is also a security problem being able to access the menu while the phone is locked. Imagine this situation, if someone tried to steal the phone and try to access the critical information it contains, even though it has the pattern blocking enabled, using the solution provided you could access the contents of the phone even when it is locked for security, the thief could obtain critical information from the company that you work. Really unfortunate. http://www.samsunggalaxysforum.com/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to/samsung-galaxy-s-i9000-too-many-pattern-attempts/

How has this been closed? I have a Samsung Galaxy S which is now useless... i've not found any of the suggested fixes to work.
,
Oct 9, 2010
I was able to unlock mine after several hours. the solution is simple actually (on a Galaxy S) too: you need to have someone call you, then hit the back key (maybe several times I don't remember exactly), the home screen appears, then you can find elsewhere what to do. such a bug is really unacceptable.

Samsung Galaxy S - Orange UK I have tried the following fixes - "null" password - hold down the down volume, power button and home at start up (phone won't start, have to release the power button) - Hold down the up and down volume button and home, same as above Receive call and click sim services (goes back to log in screen - using my facebook login & password - using facebook password with gmail before the @ symbol - using my gmail account without the @gmail.com I spoke to samsung support for a hour and tehy said, user error, take it to service center. I have taken it to a service center and they explained that they could not re-flash the phone but would have to send it back to Samsung, and that will take 2 weeks and be out of warranty and would be chargeable. They also mentioned for the last 7 months since they have been offering Samsung support as an official service center this issue was recognised as within warranty for 5 months, and then Samsung changed it.

I don't understand that google would ignore such a bug for so long. I have tried all the tricks mentioned above, which appearently have been actively fixed by Google to prevent security problems, but they didn't have time to fix the actual bug. So ridiculous.

Comment No. 422 Maybe this worked for your phone but none of the methods above work for the galaxy s I bought last week from gitex. If this issue isn't resolved soon, I will have to issue a warning to all company staff and friends in my blog to avoid android at all costs since google/samsung is so careless to deal with such a small issue.

my galaxy android phone is less than 24 hours old. i was using it. then put it down 10 mins later it locked me out. it won't recognise my password. i hadn't set up the email account yet so that is not an option for me. my service provider (O2) is saying i can just get another one. that will make my third in 3 days as the clock auto update doesn't work either. the second one's auto clock does't work but i just decided to take off auto synch. thankfully i have found this forum and know that i am not going mad. off to get phone no 3!

I can't even hard reset my device (Galaxy S i9000 with android 2.1) Manually: - I tried holding the volume down and press/release power button - I tried holding the volume down and volume up and press/release power button - I tried holding the volume down and home button and press/release power button - I tried holding the volume down and home button and press/release power button - I tried holding the volume down and volume up and home button and press/release power button - I also tried all of the above while USB is plugd into my pc I installed the android SDK and tried using adb reboot recovery as suggested by a guy in youtube but it returns an error "device not found" and when I investigated someone said that you have to have USB debugging enabled on the phone but I can't access the phone to do this. I think this is the begining of the end for Google/Android The problem is that Google didn't even care to mark this issue "Critical" even though it is so far the worst bug I can think of. I have had an iphone for the last three years and I never faced a problem like this....never... and this stupid Android phone has only been with me for a couple of days.

Ok, I did it! I dont know if I could explain it, but here we go.. In a few words: 1.-reach the format menu (wipe & other options...), and select factory reset. reboot. 2.-in the screen where we have to put our google account, call yourself with another phone 3.-home button and go to settings, blabla, factory reset. and we got it. For reaching that format menu, I tried lots of things, but finally i reach there pressing and releasing power button, and then home, volume down, and power. Here you can move through options with volume up and down, and enter is home button. I went to google.com on my pc and started creating a new account so google calls me for activating the account (i hope this international calls to be free for me!) Answer and press home button, and go to settings, privacy, factory reset. The phone will reboot and our phone is fixed... Sorry about my English. Please try what Ive told and answer, Ill try to help you. Initially, I couldnt reach format menu, nor downloading menu... I couldnt reach an unlock home menu when i pressed home button during a call... good luck boys

I managed to sort on a Galaxy S, but not without a reset. I called my phone from another a few times, trying to get into memo or contacts on each call. After c. 5 trys I was let in to the memo/contacts, then kept going through the menus (left button) to try bring me further into the phone e.g. memo - type memo - send memo - via messaging then home (centre) button. This allowed me then to perform a factory reset in setting/privacy/reset.
,

This is the same problem on Samsung Captivate, which lead to me having to get a new phone after 4 weeks. It's the same issue, I forget my password, tried to get in with no luck, then tried using the Google account login and that doesn't work either. This is a major bug as it leads to carriers having to give new phones to customers every time because this is considered a defect. FroYo is way cool but come guys and knock this out already, it should be easy.

I've just tested this on my HTC desire after seeing this bug on engadget, i'm using stock HTC firmware and i've had no issues with this. I entered my pattern wrong 5 times then immediately hit the "forgotten pattern" button. The device asked for my google username and password user name was entered in full ( i.e. xxxxx@googlemail.com ) i then hit the sign in button and it asked for a new pattern. after i entered the new pattern i was retrned to the home screen. my device info: device: HTC desire ( A8181 ) android version: 2.2 BB version 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2 kernel version: 2.6.32.15 build no.: 2.10.405.2 I've also done this on a htc hero in the past, i had genuinely forgotten the pattern at the time and no issues were encountered at the time.

I had this issue during the second day after I had bought Samsung Galaxy S running Android 2.1, fortunately I had just configured the Google accounts and was able to reset the screen unlock pattern after I had forgotten about it. Came to know only just now that this is Bug!

Samsung galaxy s phone EPIC 4g. Did the phone call fro another phone thing. It worked. Then I managed to get into the phone while still on the call by pressing the menu button. Got a screen that said memo. got into it. saved a memo. Backed out. got to the home screen. went to settings. disabled the lock pattern. removed my facebook account. re entered a old gmail account while my new account was still active. powered down the phone, entered my email address and pass(of my main email) and voila, it worked.

Samsung Galaxy S (Fascinate) on Verizon. Andriod V 2.1-update1. My phone is rooted. Here is what I did to unlock my phone. I am not sure if all of it is necessary. 1. I changed my google password from my computer 2. I called my phone from another phone 3. Pressed the home button 4. Created a new memo 5. Under Settings, Accounts and Sync, deleted my facebook account 6. Under Settings, Location and Security, I disabled Require pattern 7. There was a red triangle icon in my notifications 8. The notification was that my password to google had changed 9. I entered my new password 10. While still on the call I got back to the screen to enter my gmail account and password to unlock the phone 11. I again entered my complete email account 12. I entered my new password The phone unlocked and asked for a new unlock pattern. Apparently it turned back on the Require pattern in Location and security. I entered the new pattern and all is well. Hope this helps.

I believe I FIGURED IT OUT, at least for myself. I was going through the same trouble as you all. Pattern failed 30 times and the only thing the GalaxyS would accept is a "Google Username or email" and a "Password". Finally, I recalled that I used Youtube on the phone but it using was an account seperate from GMAIL. When I put the Youtube credentials my phone unlocked!! What a relief. Once logged in, I reviewed Settings > Accounts and Sync and saw 4 accounts listed, two of which were from Google (my Gmail and my Youtube). It seems the phone placed my Youtube account as a primary (perhaps it uses whichever account was established most recently, couldn't tell you). I'm assuming if you have any other Google Services with separate credentials, the same may apply here. Good luck.

After struggling to try every option on here for hours, I finally figured out how to unlock my HTC Hero. I'm not sure it will work for everyone, but it's worth a shot when you've exhausted every other option without success. I went into my gmail address and changed the password first, so that I knew I was using the right one. After that, I went into my google settings on the computer and went to the tab "Accounts and Import." After you open that, go down to "Google Account Settings." From there, you will see "Multiple Sign In." Go to that page and change it to "On - Use multiple Google Accounts in the same web browser." Click the checkmark in all four boxes and then save. This will now allow you to sign in on your computer, AS WELL AS your phone. This is where my problem was. Once I was able to sign into both, it accepted my email and password on the first try on my phone. I was then able to access my phone again with the original pattern I had locked it with. From there, you're back at your main screen, without losing anything. I hope it helps.

I can log into my gmail from the computer, tried resetting password. I PISSED and I DONT WANT TO LOOSE MY NUMBERS and TXTS!!!! I Cant seem to find much info on a work around for the EVO, its always some other phone none of it works for me .... any help would be great......also when i try to unlock it with the gmail account and password it says "i have drawn an incorrect pattern 5 times and to wait 30 seconds to try again, but it doesnt let me have a pattern screen Im SCREWED I AM SUPER ANGRY THAT THIS BUG IS ALMOST 2 YEARS OLD AND STILL IT HASNT BEEN FIXED

I entered my security lock on my phone too many times and locked myself out. I know my sim and could still get into the phone but I couldn't get any further than the 'log in with your google acccount' page. I tried this several times and it just would not accept my details. I rebooted the phone about 20 times and eventually, I found that if you turn the phone off, take out the battery and then put it back together, you then need to press the 'home' button and the on button at the same time, then when it starts hold the volume button till it vibrates. You phone should start in 'Safe mode'. You need to be in rage of 3G and then it "should" allow you to log in using your correct Gmail details.

I work at a cellular repair center and I see this issue VERY OFTEN. I'd say that we have at least 2-3 Android devices come in a week that are having locked out issues. A few of these people are unsure of their information, but the majority do. We have been able to use "null" as the password with limited success. Some devices it unlocks, others are not so lucky. But we have performed a hard reset, then the customer turn around and enter their gmail address on the phone and it work! So, what I'd advise, if you're locked out, is try putting in your Gmail and typing "null". If that does not work, log into Gmail on your pc, make sure your contacts are backed up, and then search for a key combo to hard reset your phone. You will lose your SMS and other info on the phone. However, you will have a working phone once again!

On reg to (comment 465 by techkarr) I have tried everything you have mentioned and still no joy. Unfortunately it’s a bug that Google haven’t got around to fixing with the sounds of things. Even down to Android 2.3 which is still affected. I have just bought the new Motorola flip out and the only way to hard reset the phone is by using the phones menu system/options rather then key combinations etc. I called my network providers and they have never heard of the phone and couldn’t help but gave me the option to send it in for repair. I tried to explain that it’s impossible to get into the phone and there is no other option then to class it as a fault and a replacement. That’s if the guys have software that can bypass this, then good luck to them. I am shocked Google (one of the biggest known names out there) can allow this to be happening on new handsets as well as those that are already affected! I think this needs to be addressed with high priority as even those with up to date handset and using Android 2.3, are still being affected at a high rate. Get a grip Google, you will loose customers for this reason. Yes I agree, don’t allow your phone to be locked out, but like many above me, what if you have kids or friends in that matter who decide to mess with your phone not realising its going to brick it completely? I for one didn't realise it did and for the money I am paying, would have thought it was stupid proof, not dummy proof.

Just some key pointers for those that have this problem and others.... Sale of Goods Act, Faulty Goods. Relevant or Related Legislation: Sale of Goods Act 1979. Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. Sale and Supply of Goods Act 1994. The Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002. Key Facts: • Wherever goods are bought they must "conform to contract". This means they must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality (i.e. not inherently faulty at the time of sale). • Goods are of satisfactory quality if they reach the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking into account the price and any description. • Aspects of quality include fitness for purpose, freedom from minor defects, appearance and finish, durability and safety. • It is the seller, not the manufacturer, who is responsible if goods do not conform to contract. • If goods do not conform to contract at the time of sale, purchasers can request their money back "within a reasonable time". (This is not defined and will depend on circumstances) • For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement). • A purchaser who is a consumer, i.e. is not buying in the course of a business, can alternatively request a repair or replacement. • If repair and replacement are not possible or too costly, then the consumer can seek a partial refund, if they have had some benefit from the good, or a full refund if the fault/s have meant they have enjoyed no benefit • In general, the onus is on all purchasers to prove the goods did not conform to contract (e.g. was inherently faulty) and should have reasonably lasted until this point in time (i.e. perishable goods do not last for six years). • If a consumer chooses to request a repair or replacement, then for the first six months after purchase it will be for the retailer to prove the goods did conform to contract (e.g. were not inherently faulty) • After six months and until the end of the six years, it is for the consumer to prove the lack of conformity. Q1. What is an inherent fault? A fault present at the time of purchase. Examples are: • an error in design so that a product is manufactured incorrectly • an error in manufacturing where a faulty component was inserted. The "fault" may not become apparent immediately but it was there at the time of sale and so the product was not of satisfactory standard. Q8. Can I claim a refund on sale items? It depends on why you want to return them. The Sale of Goods Act still applies, but you are not entitled to a refund if you were told of the faults before purchase, or if the fault should have been obvious to you. Also, you are not entitled to a refund if you simply change your mind about liking the goods.

Hi.. Yesterday exactly same problem... On branded Samsung GT-I5500 no solution works. I paid about 50$ for flashing my device - my mobile operator offered me sales return, but it takes about month to solve that this way. Forget about 50$, this is nearly impossible - 3 years of developing android and no fix? some patch lost? or what the hell is going?

I was assured it would work in Ireland and am since left with a phone I cant use because it would let me log on to google or bypass this option. I have been in touch with the phone support people from the shop I bought it from and they send me an email tell me how to reset it but the same thing just came back on the screen. Just had the same problem with my htc hero. I realized that my wireless connection on the phone was off which is why i could not enter username and password. This is how i fixed it. 1. i went online using my computer and accessed my google account to determine what my actual gmail account username was. I reset my password thereby prompting an email. 2. i called my cellular from another phone, answered it and while the call was open pulled down my notifications window to access my email. I was able to click on the email from google with the link back to google. Once i pushed the link it notified me that i could not connect because the wireless on my phone was off. It allowed me to access that part of my menu to turn the wireless on. I ended the call and retried my gmail username and password and it worked. I was able to turn off the pattern lock completely.

Hi all,I have GTI9000M galaxy S.Probably I was too confident of unlocking my phone by using gmail account that I gave it to kid to play with. She played with the unlock pattern enough time to lock the phone. Then confident of my android,I put gmail user name and password to unlock and ah! I got "the invalid user name or password" message.Later found that this is a major bug. Now I am stuck with a locked phone.I am sure this phone is not trying to connect to my google account as the message is coming instantly in other wise too slow network.I have tried above methods only in vain.It is not even giving factory reset option on doing "volume down and power key press...". Can any one suggest any ways to get the phone back to working mode. Thanks

Hi. Well, I have a Brazilian version of Galaxy S (i9000b), bought last month (android 2.1) locked by too many pattern attempts and the bug in Google credentials validation. Nothing I found here or on the net worked for my case. Ok, I accepted the idea of loosing all my data. BUT I COULDN´T! Why? Well, my phone has another bug and the two together really LOCKED my phone! I just can´t do the three keys trick to get to the recovery or download mode! Also, of course, I can´t get to the phone to set the USB debugging mode! And now what? Any ideas? Does Google even respond to the post in this foruns? Good luck for all of us!

Got to say Google. One, this is taking way too long. If you can't deal with the "backlog of complaints" and finding a permanent fix then just contract the programming out to another company and you deal with the Admin Crap. Two, Fair enough all these fixes can help people like us with a genuine problem, but if the phone gets stolen and this is discovered then they have a working phone with ALL OUR DETAILS ON IT!!!! To Do list for Google programmers: 1. Contract the Programming work out. Nearly two years you've had this problem and you still haven't fixed it. Maybe someone else can, and lets face it... YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE!!! 2. Fix all the bugged forced entry fixes on this page. It compromises our Privacy, which as the producers of the progam, you can be sued for selling a product that is not fit for purpose (namely the security features built into the ANDROID OS). Sort it out or tell us that you can't.

I completed a software download on my HTC desire. After it completed by login screen was now a pattern where it previously had been a keyboard. As I only have a text password and no pattern set I am now locked out. My default google account, used when registering the phone, does not register. Probably two issues, but net result is same.

samsung galaxy s - vibrant. I managed to trick it by hitting "reject" as i called from another phone and pulling down the screen with wifi bluetooth gps and silent menu. From there I mounted the usb to my laptop and pulled all my files - pictures, etc. off of the phone. Then I performed the delete user from the phone, which gets rid of the screen block, but also gets rid of all your aps, settings, customizations, etc. Grumble. Definitely a grumble, this bug.

This problem just occurred to me. I have an Evo 4G. None of the things below worked: - Changed Gmail password - Tried to access using 3G, my Wifi was on so I had to turn my router off to try - A bunch of different combinations The real cause of the problem is that I am using Google 2-Step Authorization. After I disabled that (via Gmail account settings from a computer) the login worked fine. I guess I could have tried using a new generated application-specific password, but I just disabled and enabled the 2-step process.

Atlast i managed to find the solution to unlock the phone which is locked by wrong pattern attempts for more than 5times.
It seems there is a bug with android unlock the screen with your google account.Even if we give correct credentials it is saying invalid username or password , i found that this is basically due to my phone having multiple account sync(facebook, twitter and gmail). If we have only one account sync(gmail) then unlocking based on gmail account is working fine.
Follow the below steps to unlock:
1.If u r unable to unlock with ur gmail account ,that means that ur mobile is having multiple account sync.
2.If ur mobile is having any of the apps that shows ur battery usage statistics ur job will b easy , in my case iam having "SuperBox" app. If u dont have this app just go to market.android.com , sign in with ur gmail account and install the app on ur mobile.
3.Now just make ur mobile battery go-down , at this time b4 ur mobile goes switched off(as ur battery have no charging) the" SuperBox" app will display a pop-up of battery usage , click on battery usage button.
4.Now press home button.. , it displays ur home screen , go to settings -> Accounts&Sync -> Remove all the accounts except ur gmail.
5.Now ur having one account with sync.. , go to unlock with ur google account screen , and provide ur gmail id and passwd , it will gets unlocked.
This process worked for me.. , and hope it works for u also..

I was battling this problem for a while today on my Samsung Spica i5700 .. None of the key combination worked and Samsung advised to send the phone in for repair (with cost) However, I realized a workaround: after inputting sim-code the phone connects to mobile network (at least mine did) meaning it can accept calls.. So I called my phone and was able to answer, then it was only a matter of going into the security menu and disable the lock screen. Hope this helps!

Disable Google account's 2-step verification works to resolve this issue in my case. If 2-step verification is enabled, the Android device is using the 16 alphabets password which was generated under "Authorizing applications & sites", instead of using the actual password for the Google account itself. That's explains why my correct password for my Google account cannot be used to unlock my Android phone. To resolve this issue, I temporary disabled 2-step verification for my Google account. Then, I'm able to use my actual password to unlock the device.

This is unimaginable !! I have been using my Nexus One for a year and a half without complaints provocating Android to all and I walk to office today with the phone in my pocket and take it out to see that its asking for my username / password ... I've tried all above (null, home-while-calling-is-on, back+home, everything..) I just cant get to removing this problem... The worrying part is, this is an issue that came up in 2009 !! People are still complaining ! Why ? Why isn't this resolved as yet ? Sad :( I don't want to lose my data :(

Does anyone know any solutions for Samsung Galaxy ace because i have tried all of the above and nothnig is working!!!

I ended up doing a hard reset, which didnt turn out to be that bad i was expecting to lose everything including contacts and apps but i did not lose any contacts, not sure why. I can see why it is the last resort though...
,
Oct 22, 2011
Yep...here it is 2011 and the issue still hasn't been resolved. I managed to log into my Google account via computer, change the password to something much easier to type than my original password, saved it, waited a few minutes, and rebooted my phone hoping that it would sync the new password. Still can't get into my phone with any of the techniques listed. NO OTHER PHONE OS I know of does this. Not Crackberry, not iOS, not Windblows. Only Android has NO reliable recovery method other than a hard reset. This should be treated as a CRITICAL bug

I used the null passwoerd, instead of your usual password just type in, null, it works instantly! was about to go to a technician, who was going to charge me!was overjoyed at the null password becoz I had tried al the above tircks and they failed.

Like mentioned above: If entering your google credentials, although you are definitely using the right username and password, won't work, then probably you have activated 2-step verification Log into your google account from another device, turn it off and voila: it works, your phone is unlocked!

Galaxy S (i9000) running Android 2.2. I have, as many other people in here, tried everything. I disabled the 2-step-verification for my Google account, and tried the following combinations. google-username@gmail.com+password google-username@gmail.com+null google-username@googlemail.com+password google-username@googlemail.com+null google-username+password google-username+null youtube-username+password youtube-username+null None of them worked. I have also received a call, and by that tried to access the settings menu by playing with various combinations of clicking the home and back button. Same goes for when entering the password or username, where I have tried out various combinations of clicking the home and back button, but without luck. Any suggestions? A reset seems as the only way out, but I would loose a lot of valuable information, hence, I would preferably avoid that!

I used the one I had originally and I am back in business!!

ok so mine was r00t3d, still too many attempts while in pocket, ffs, So ginger br34k, it, then use adb shell, check xda for that info. then run this, then reboot phone, and it’ll work again, worked for me. most credit to poster #74, torus...@gmail.com, Nov 5, 2009 who credits http: 500, lol : http://www.naschenweng.info/2009/09/17/android-too-many-pattern-attempts-phone-is-locked I did not factory reset etc, before this. REBOOT PHONE AFTER LAST COMMAND install enough sdk stuff to get adb run adb shell then – this command on one line is sqlite3 and which database. /data/data/com.webkey/files/sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db – – separate lines update system set value=0 where name=’lock_pattern_autolock’; update secure set value=0 where name=’lock_pattern_autolock’; update system set value=0 where name=’lockscreen.lockedoutpermanently’; update secure set value=0 where name=’lockscreen.lockedoutpermanently’; update system set value=0 where name=’lockscreen.lockoutattemptdeadline’; update secure set value=0 where name=’lockscreen.lockoutattemptdeadline’; .exit; then rebooted. no dots, just droid, wh4t th4t m33ns I dunn0. m1l4g3 w1ll v4ry

GOT IT!!! No tricks, no pressing buttons.... log into your google account on your computer. Go to account settings - then you need to set up 2 step verification and go to Authorized access (Connected apps, sites, and services). Make sure your phone # is the one in the account, and when you generate a new app-specific password you put it in where you would THINK your normal Google password would go...and voila!!!! You can reset your pattern!!! Took me an hour to figure out but it worked.

I´ve got the ultimate solution for a samsung galaxy s2! log into your googlemail. go to the settings and make the 2 step verification. after that you have to create an applification specific password. i´ve written googlemail :). now you´ve got to put this new specific password into your phone! thats it! no reset and no pushing 5 times a second the home button... the phone is a samsung galaxy s2 i9100 and my wifi was on. here a video how to do this steps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMabEyrtPRg&t=2m13s

Just had this happen on my Droid Bionic after my 3 year old daughter got ahold of it. Luckily @561 fixed it for me, even though on the accounts management page it says: "No need to memorize this password. You should need to enter it only once. Spaces don't matter." Save the "one-time" password you generated for your phone, you will need it (unless you don't mind revoking it and generating a new one).

Wanted to document a successful work-around for my circumstances: Motorola Droid 2 (Star Wars edition). Turned on the pattern code lock, got into the Too Many Unlock Attempts state mentioned above. This is absolutely a critical issue as without a work around you end up with a bricked phone incapable of anything other than 911 calls. Attempted solutions: Attempted nearly every exploit to attempt to return to home page - spamming the home or back buttons would return to the Too Many Unlock Attempts page or rarely return to the swipe to unlock page which would lead directly back to the Too Many Unlock Attempts page. Null password, alternate logins - did not work, led to the same Too Many Unlock Attempts (TMUA) page Workaround - What finally worked for me, as far as I can tell, was some combination of changing the gmail password and/or removing the two-factor authorization. The kicker is after making the password change it took 6(!) hours for the password change to actually "take". 1-2 minutes after the password change, I observed an orange triangle with white exclamation mark (presumably a notification that phone authorization password has changed). Only after 6 hours passed did it actually do something different when I entered in Username and the New Password. When I did that, it showed the new pattern entry screen, allowed me to enter in a new pattern, and finally let me into the phone. For those experiencing this issue - you have my sympathy, and I recommend at least trying. This is a serious issue, and I hope this issue gets the attention it deserves.

I was just about to give up and do a hard reset, but then I found this on the web: Type: YOUR-USERNAME@googlemail.com. [Had to be googlemail for me, have no idea why!] Then For The Password Type: 'null' Without quotations.

I spent 2 hours trying everything here and none of them worked what so ever, then on another forum I found a solution simpler than all of these above. Simply enter your Google email address that is registered with your Android phone and enter null as the password. This worked after one attempt. LG Optimus.

I faced the same issue with my samsung galaxy android and I used a friends SIM with internet active on it. Typed in my gmail username and in the password option typed in the password (application specific) generated from my gmail account. and yayi! the phone accepted it and unlocked it. Great I didn't loose my precious data :) hope this works for everybody stuck with forever locked misery!

I got this to work on my HTC Tattoo: Enter your gmail username as normal myname@gmail.com etc then enter the word "null" in password (and not an empty null string!)

I'm using Samsung Galaxy S i9003. It is today that I encountered exactly the same situation.
Here is my solution (the 'null' password string and pressing the home button do not work out).
1. Make your phone have internet connection: -- This is VITAL step
Remember that we can not turn on the WIFI as the screen is being locked.
So, the only helpful way is to turn 3G on. (I registered to use 3G from my service provider before)
This can be done by pressing the power button. Choosing "Data network mode" -> 3G will be activated
check that you have the icon 3G displaying on the phone.
2. Enter the gmail account with correct password.
If you're using a 2-step password verification, then you need to revoke the old application-specific password
and generate a new one. After that, just enter the gmail account (including @gmail.com) and the correct password (or the new generated one).
=> Thanks to the internet connection, the phone can verify the correct account.
3. Bingo !!!
Note that this is a successful solution. I do NOT have to reset my phone. Hope this help.

does anyone know how to get into a samsung captivate glide phone with this same problem? My awful sister got me locked out and I have tried every password i would have possbile had and it wouldn't work so i tried changing my password but my phone is not connected to the internet so it doesn't recognize that. I took the sim card out, the battery out, i switched sim cards with someone else who knew their password for sure(because i changed it before we switched). i tried getting people to call me and putting them on hold, draggin the status bar. nothing worked!!! its been like this for three days now!!!
