Issue 2305: SMS does not support delivery notification, incorrectly describes sent-to-network as this feature
166 people starred this issue and may be notified of changes. Back to list

Reported by briantist.uk, Mar 26, 2009
Steps to reproduce the problem

HOME->Messaging->MENU->Settings->SMS Settings->Delivery reports - set to on

Sending any SMS message displays an icon to display the message is "pending
to networks" and "delivered to network" but never displays the "delivered
to handset" (or "delivered upstream") SMS status.

[The GSM/3G network implements these messages by prefixing the SMS
destination telephone number with *0#]

Android should support SMS delivery notification requests, correctly
display delivery status AND allow the user to see the **delivery
datestamp** provided by the network.

Sample source code demonstrating the problem

n/a

What you think the correct behavior should be.

When enabled, the Messaging app should be able to request network delivery
messages correct, and should be able to display these status messages to
the user in the correct way.

NB: Using T-Mobile UK

Summary: [messaging] SMS does not support delivery notification, incorrectly describes sent-to-network as this feature
Comment 2 by extorian, Apr 14, 2009
Same here - using T-Mobile UK. Comparing directly to Nokia's functionality. It
displays either Delivered, Pending, or Failed. Delivered means the recipient's
handset has actually received the message. Pending means it's been received by the
SMSC, and Failed means it's failed (wrong number, expired, etc).
Comment 3 by tobybryans, May 07, 2009
It would be good if we could also have notifications when the delivery report comes
back rather than having to examine the report on each message. I understand some may
find this irritating so perhaps make it optional?
Comment 4 by npettexsabarot, May 27, 2009
Hello,
I strongly vote for this feature. That a major issue not having this. I switched from
Windows mobile to Android and I'm mising this. AS stated TobyBrans I would prefer a
notification just like a new SMS rather than a chnage in the status icon as the DN
can come later.

This feature has been on ALL digital phones since they launched the networks back in
the 1990s. Seems a bit of a backward step it being missing from the G1.

I already submited a fix. Now waiting for code review...

This is a basic phone function which really should have no problems operating. It
would be nice to see this fixed soon. I live in an area with poor reception and
depend on these reports to confirm whether an SMS has been delivered or not. I find
that I also get the false reporting mentioned in this topic on a regular basis.
Comment 8 by andrey.moscow, Jun 14, 2009
please add checkbox 'display delivery notification in status bar' and 'use/select
ringtone for delivery notifications' to menu 'messaging->settings'
Comment 9 by natreen, Jul 15, 2009
Same problem here with T-Mobile Germany. Msg gets status delivered even tho
recipients phone is turned off...
Comment 10 by oinvertedworld, Aug 09, 2009
i'm really looking forward to a fix release too
Comment 11 by chris.mcginn, Aug 14, 2009
This issue has been a major irritation for me. I've relied heavily on delivery
notifications on previous phones and its absence on the G1 is one of its few
negatives.
Comment 13 by Gorgi.GR, Aug 18, 2009
Same here, It is unacceptable that basic functionality like this is not supported in
supposedly cutting-edge tech smartphones...

Android NEEDS this functionality!
Comment 17 by emir.jakupovic, Sep 10, 2009
Yes i agree. Android should have this option. Its handy to know if recipient did indeed receive a message or not.
Please make this available in the upcoming release.
Comment 18 by lepianiste, Sep 23, 2009
Just adding my voice to support this feature in the nearest release. It's REALLY important
Comment 19 by marcode, Oct 07, 2009
if you guys find lack of delivery reports annoying, then im sure no-auto-resend of
failed SMS is fairly high on your list too:

pls star this if you would like SMS auto-resend to be a bit higher in googles to-do:

cheers.

identical to issue 1801
I hope it got fixed in Android 2.0 ?
Comment 21 by extorian, Oct 30, 2009
This is not quite the same issue as 1801. Issue 1801 is about the delivery report
status *icon* being incorrect, whereas bug 2305 is about the information itself being
misleading.

Essentially, 1801 is caused by 2305. This bug (2305) must be fixed first so that the
information is available to Android (for all we know Android might ignore the SMS
Received by recipient phone information). Then 1801 must be fixed so that the icon
uses this new information instead of the "Received by SMSC" information which is
misleading.

This bug (2305), however, correctly describes this behaviour. What Android means by
"Status: Received" is that the message has been received by the message centre (i.e.
the network) - this is misleading, pretty useless, and different from every other
phone I have ever used that supports delivery notifications.

i have the same issue on a new verizon moto droid. i have the option on the get
delivery notification, yet none comes. i'm on verizon in usa. the feature worked on
my verizon blackberry tour 9630, but only to other verizon users.
Comment 23 by shantogoswami, Nov 23, 2009
Agreed. Major disappointment. I moved over from a Blackberry on VZW's network, and
while I like certain features of the Android OS, it is not ready for prime time. If
I wanted to partake in a live beta test, I would've gone to Microsoft.

Or maybe I should just switch to Apple. Once it's on Verizon.
Comment 24 by deanparkr, Dec 04, 2009
I cant believe this hasnt been fixed yet??
Comment 25 by knightdavidjohn, Dec 06, 2009
Do people still have this problem? Delivery reports work perfectly when I've tested
them on my HTC Hero between a Vodafone and 3UK phone.
Comment 26 by halligf2, Dec 06, 2009
@knightdavidjohn
Have you checked whether you get a delivery report if the receiving phone is off?
Comment 27 by knightdavidjohn, Dec 06, 2009
@halligf2
The delivery report only states "received" when the receiving phone is switched on
and has received the message. "Pending" is displayed when the receiving phone is
switched off.
Comment 28 by halligf2, Dec 06, 2009
Are you using a messaging app from the market or is it the default android one?
Comment 29 by knightdavidjohn, Dec 06, 2009
@halligf2
Default messaging app. Have SMS Popup installed for notifications, but can't see that
would make a difference. Only tested between Vodafone (on the phone sending message)
and 3UK (on the phone receiving message).
Comment 30 by extorian, Dec 06, 2009
Just tested this again on T-Mobile UK using G1 running Android 1.6. Sending to an old
Nokia on a PAYG Tesco SIM I have as a spare. That phone is switched OFF.

A second or two after sending, the icon at the bottom right of the message thread
changed to an envelope with a green "i" in it. Long pressing it and clicking "View
report" shows "Status: Received", which is incorrect. The other phone is switched OFF
so it cannot have received the message.
Comment 31 by mike.schaub, Yesterday (20 hours ago)
Same here. Using a Motorola Milestone (w/ Android 2.0) on carrier Swisscom CH. Tried
to send a test message to another Swisscom Mobile, which was off at the time.
Delivery report says "delivered". Sure, to the SMSC, but not to the phone. NEEDS TO
BE FIXED! This is GSM basics, every other phone handles these reports correct!
