I am attaching another screenshot of the Locale Setting.
sa...@gmail.com <sa...@gmail.com> #3
I noticed the same issue with the emulator. i also checked the /system/fonts dir and there is no sign of hindi fonts.
na...@gmail.com <na...@gmail.com> #4
@sasidublin, agreed. Not only do they not have a font they don't have any shaper that can handle Hindi in Android 2.3. So that's bad. Someone taking care of i18n should really check his notes. Just putting localized strings for languages like Hindi would not work as some form of shaper is still needed to render them. So the issues are:
1) Missing Shaper for Hindi. Just supporting locale without a shaper is meaningless.
2) Missing Font for Hindi.
However the Platform Highlights says thus:
New Platform Technologies
Core libraries:
Expanded I18N support (full worldwide encodings, more locales)
Locales
The system image included in the downloadable SDK platform provides a variety of built-in locales. In some cases, region-specific strings are available for the locales. In other cases, a default version of the language is used. The languages that are available in the Android 2.3 system image are listed below (with language_country/region locale descriptor).

Just square boxes in Browser. For Hindi font does not exist at all, and even if we added our own font, rendering will still be broken. Will try to add font and upload a test here.
pr...@gmail.com <pr...@gmail.com> #7
Yup @nasamissions is correct. That is exactly wat I see on my emulator. Using emulator's browser I went to my Hindi blog and I still see the pestiferous square boxes on the web pages. Same result for Google's Hindi news website. Come on Google!! Really?
Anyways people, make sure that in addition to writing your comments here, please remember to click on the "Star" button on top-left corner of this defect page to push this defect up in queue.
@ravi please do share if anything works out.

Finished testing by putting mangal.ttf as DroidSansFallback.ttf into /system/fonts/
As expected re-ordering and halant/half-forms is not working. But if Google can put in Arabic font even though it does not work, I think it would be great if they would also put in a Hindi font even if it does not work.

It's mind numbing to see many news site claiming Hindi to be supported just based on the release notes from Android. So far no news sites has claimed otherwise, I think this bug begs to be publicized to gain more attention. Anyone that can help, please?

Good work on testing the SDK. It is disappointing that Hindi is being neglected by i18n team of Android again and again. Does anyone know a lead/developer inside the mighty Google who can help us get this issue some more love.

I have been on crusade (for lack of a better word) to ask Android team members that I could identify on twitter or otherwise for ETA on Hindi support. Till now I have been a single man's team. I have written to TSeng when he used to work for Google, now he is at Facebook. Had gotten a generic reply from him in past. I have written to Romain Guy and Nikesh Arora (Head of Google Sales). Haven't received any replies from them. I agree with you, if we want this to work we have to coordinate and collectively put pressure on Android team through blogs and news media or any other medium. For God sakes its embarrassing, look at Enhancement #5597 demanding Arabic support, it has 5628 stars and 5018 comments in less than one year. And our Enhancement has been around for 2 years with just 134 stars and 92 comments. Then we wonder why us Indians get short-change again and again. This is not just about getting Hindi support. Its Devnagri (big umbrella) and with it will come support for other Indian languages of different charset too. I hope the fence sitters will shed their "my language first" chauvinism and unite to get Google to stop ignoring us.

Pratulkkalia,
That is good news for me. I would see if I can download the source of Samsung Galaxy 3. I have also read a similar feedback from another person for Galaxy 5 (I5801)Android 2.1 Eclair. It also supports Hindi perfectly out of the box. This means it's time to get that ROM modded for another devices. Can you confirm if they have a keyboard as well?
Back some months I emaild HTC India about Hindi and they told me 'regional' languages were not supported on HTC. If Sumsung supports it kudos to them, and we should let our Indian audience know that this korean company values our country a lot more than HTC. Samsung like you have mentioned obviously is using a non Google technology to achieve this. Will report more after running the galaxy 5 image.

Android phones costing less than 5000 INR? Already, the phones costing 12K INR (like the Samsung Galaxy 3) are amazingly slow and underpowered. Phones that cheap will have such useless hardware that the entire Android experience will be destroyed. I played around with a Micromax Android phone worth 8000 INR recently and it took me 5 seconds to open the dialer or the Contacts app.
IMO, I hope that never happens. People will buy cheap Android phones and expect the same level of awesomeness as they see on higher end ones. That's disappointing. Maybe we need a stripped down light weight version of Android for those phones :-)

Hi,
I'm a Sri Lankan Sinhalese & an Android app developer. In my opinion we can't wait until Android officailly supports our Indic scripts. Therefore I developed the SETT Browser, a mobile web browser for Android which can render & display Sinhala & Tamil unicode web text.
SETT Browser:http://code.google.com/p/sett-browser/
This is an open-source app & I developed this only for Sinhala & Tamil Indic scripts since I've no language knowledge about the other Indic scripts such as Hindi. But if anyone of you can help me, I'm ready to extend the language support of the SETT Browser to support Hindi as well.
You can contact me via mail: dhanikaperera[at]gmail[dot]com

Dhani is right. We should not wait. Google has *not* said Indic will be supported in 3.0, they just said 3.0 will include harfbuzz which are two entirely different things. As for me I prefer to put the support into the OS rather than write an app that supports it. We can do what was done for Arabic. As we lack a place to meet and share what we have I will update our progress on Burmese (Myanmar) shaping here. Currently we have written a shaper similar to Better Arabic Reshaper and have hooked it to dratText() in Canvas.java. Canvas.java is in:
/frameworks/base/graphics/java/android/graphics
That is for the framework. Webkit has to be done separately. Also we have not been told if Harfbuzz-ng will be back ported to 2.3 (not that it matters, since Harfbuzz-ng doesn't support indic anyway). Once I am done with Burmese, I can work on Hindi and Punjabi.

I think it is better to start a group for this. What you are saying is true. Even android 2.4 does support complex text existing users can not use it without an OS update. In case like x10 that won't happen. So I also think it is better to start a group to discuss what we have found and work as a team.

If you know how to use adb, here is how you replace the font (dont forget to take backup of existing font - mentioned below):
----> to copy into phone/device
adb remount
adb push DroidSansFallback.ttf /system/fonts/
before doing this, it's better you take backup of existing font in the system folder which you can do by issuing pull instead of push as following:
----> to copy from phone/device (backup)
adb pull /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf

Android is not Hindi enabled. The link you gave just shows that a particular variant of Sony Ericsson phone can display Hindi correctly. We already know that, and we know that the Samsung Galaxy 5 and Galaxy 3 phones sold in India can display Hindi fonts. We want Official support, not vendor fragmentations.
@avinash
I am afraid it is not the ttf file, but the Firmware. You will need the correct firmware that can display Hindi. I don't know where that is available.

Yes, many languages like Hindi, Arabic, Tamil aren't available officially
from Android, despite of being in the list of supported languages.
Some devices like Samsung Galaxy 3 has hindi as a language, its 2.2 update
supports Arabic too.
But this is something we can't rely on.
Consider your hindi application running on the devices that don't support
hindi!

It's extremely unfortunate and disgusting that Android has ignored Hindi compatibility for Gingerbread 2.3.3 .... how can they be ignorant about the fact that every Sixth person in the world is an Indian and directly being affeceted by the Indic language portability in the morden mobiles or electronic gadgets! After long wait of at least seven months, I purchaged a Samsung Galaxy S2 on 5th June 2011. Its a Gingerbread OS 2.3.3 phone. But I got shocked to know that it doesn't have Devnagri compatibility. I tag it a slap on the face of Indians specially those Hindustanies who are working with Google or Android or even Samsung! Shame-Shame!
Indian languages are not in the list but there are many others are there which is hardly a language of few million people! Clearly a pathetic approach has been adopted against 121 billion people!
Only remady to this issue would be the IMMEDIATE upgradation of the OS 2.3.3...!

Android at the heart is Linux. But it is striped down Linux. Hence the packages that Linux has for rendering Hindi and other complex scripts is not present in Android. They can include Pango, which on Linux is being phased out in favor of Harfbuzz. But Pango is too heavy for a Mobile OS. Hence they want to include Harfbuzz (and has done so on Honeycomb). But Harfbuzz is still for from being complete, partly because the person maintaining Harfbuzz was working for RedHat. He is now working for Google (more than a year already). Google now more or less 'owns' the technology that renders complex scripts, they were just sitting on it doing nothing. Doing nothing as Symbian and Meego were still a threat which could benefit from the work of HarfBuzz. Hence Google just was not pushing Harfbuzz enough in fear that Nokia which also uses Harfbuzz will gain from it! The Ironies of the Open Source world. But this factor should not longer be a threat as Nokia has abandoned Symbian. So we can be sure that we will see something soon. But if you are on Gingerbread, just forget it. It will never come as minor updates just don't work that way. Even if it did, your Handset Vendor will not bake a new firmware for every minor update from Google.

hindi fonts:- thanks to opera for his solution in opera mini, only in operaq mini hindi fonts are properly rendered. Go to opera:config last option, tick yes to complex scripts and then shows hindi fonts properly.

if i want to search योग or ताजमहल in Hindi, how i can do it.
And when android is Unicode based system why Hindi rendering is not there.

"All the mobile phone mfrs in India do not offer Indian languages on their handsets. While the 'cheaper' phones can deliver Indic input & reading, why the so-called 'smart phones' should not?
Every internet forum is filled with these complaints, but the phone mfrs refuse to take notice.
I think its time TRAI steps in & tell all the phone makers wanting to do business in India to offer Indic scripts on all their phones or simply get out!
Its time India stands for herself."

If u really want ro get this moving try contributing to the android project. If ur a developer help on some of the bugs or if ur not u can help by testing neq releases. Else just shut ur mouth.

Not sure if TRAI has any control to dictate manufacturing requirements but that doesn't mean it cannot. Its a good idea. I'll write a general complaint to TRAI and Ministry of Communications & Information Technology.
@Ramkumar1985
Whoa... demanding someone to be nice and shut up is very nice of you. Kaunteya or for that matter everyone has Free Speech. Its not your prerogative to tell him what to do. We are all here for our love for Hindi language and we are all free to do whatever we deem fit, legally, to get what we want. Please be civil.
Secondly, you are ignorant if you think Android OS is free. Have you heard of patent royalty fees? If not, search the term.
Thirdly, similar thread on Arabic language had over 5000 votes within couple of months of its creation in 2010 and Arabic language support was added by next release. That's the power of "demanding". Compared to original defect on Hindi that was created way back in 2008 and was prematurely closed by Android team. And the issue is still lingering on.
Take it easy.

If google didnt want anyone to demand, they wont add that feature in the
system. Even people raising their voice here in the group is doing
something. Lot of them not doing anything and if some people are here,
discouraging others is not the right thing to do.
I have also written to TRAI and they can certainly put minimum requirements
in place for devices to be sold in India irrespective of where it is
manufactured.

please please star this issue. There have been similar issues in the past too related to Indic fonts. I don't know why Google can support Indian script on their websites but Android system cannot support Indic fonts and scripts. This seems a very easy problem to solve for the android team. I hope they do listen to the request of all the concerned voters here related to this issue. I hope atleast one Google correspondent replies to this post officially. Otherwise it is cruel to keep discussing this issue without any support or word from the authorities governing android. Urge your fellow Indians to vote for this issue and Star it. I renamed DroidSansHindi.ttf as DroidSansFallback.ttf & replaced the actual fall back font on system/fonts. That gave me a mangal like devanagari font. OK, but not so goodlooking. But that took away Chinese text to square boxes. I'm in China & need the Chinese text also on mobile.
So I replaced the new fall back font with Arial Unicode MS renamed as DroidSansFallback.ttf (22 mb!). This gave me a beautiful authentic devanagari font & also display of Chinese characters. Working fine on my HTC Desire HD / A9191. Only 2 problems displaying Hindi.
1. half characters rendered as full with broken leg (i dunno how to say this in English) ie: प्रमोद is seen as प्रमोद. समस्या as समस्या.
But this rendering ability has to be introduced from whom? Android or HTC?
Could anybody pls suggest any s/ware which can do this?

This is an open fact that HINDI is spoken by largest number of people on this earth after Chinese. Is Android not aware of this fact. It is strange that in today's most competitive market Android is not desirous of tapping the HINDI market. If Android keeps on ignoring HINDI any more people will start boycotting android. There are alternatives available to Android. So take it as a warning.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is out. So whats the verdict? Has anyone tested if SDK or emulator supports Devnagri (Hindi, etc.) or do we still see those dreaded boxes ☐?
@dhan...@bhasha.lk, Oct 13
Next time when you post on a serious complaint thread to unceremoniously plug your app, make sure you at least fix the considerable amount of grammatical mistakes in your Hindi writings, especially the incorrect use of full stop '.' instead of poorn-viraam '।'. Such ignorance of language will definitely repulse allot of us Hindi lovers and will not gain you any customers. Anyways, good luck with your browser. "jo hindi mein achhi tarah se renders। koi font sthapit karne ki jarurat hai।" Seriously?!

More exciting is this bit from Android API http://developer.android.com/reference/android/text/Layout.html#isRtlCharAt(int)
This can help in building a a rendering engine (much like SETT) to all OEMs (Samsung, HTC, LG, etc) or Google themselves or us developers.

Sad news may be not. depends on way you look at it. I tried to create an avd on android SDK 4.0 (w/ and w/o google api 14) and result is disappointing. I dont see any boxes but i don't see any test. Changed font encoding to UTF-8 also. Still no test. I think hindi fonts might be missing. Will try to test and post back after pushing fonts into avd.

Re comment 73 - Pango works fine on Linux phones - all complex scripts render properly on my Nokia N900. I can see no good reason why Google crippled Android this way.
Complex script support really needs to be in the OS itself - not just in a browser or special applications - or added on to some phones by some manufacturers.
Here is an example of Tibetan on Android 4.0 - the top line shows how the text *should* look. The bottom line shows how it actually renders with a Unicode compatible Tibetan script font installed. STILL NOT WORKING.

The Govt. of India should immediately make it a mandatory and *requirement* that all phones imported into India, or assembled/ manufactured in India should be able to properly display text in all the regional languages of India.
If there was a law like this we would see proper complex script support in phones almost overnight. It is not that it is difficult to do.

Why should a phone be called as 'smartphone' when it can't do a basic task? I have symbian s60v3 base Nokia E63 and it renders devanagari in an absolutely perfect way. Android may be smart, but not Google India nor companies selling smartphones in Indian Market. Open OS and such restrictions? I am fortunate that I found this before buying an Android. Guys, please mention your phone if it supports devanagari with proper rendering so that people will be educated about smartphones with devanagari support.

United we stand!

This is not a duplicate of issue 36909639 at all. This is not about re-ordering (there that would be tangential subset of this bug). This is also very specific about Gingerbread, because according to the release notes of Gingerbread Hindi is supported as an Input Language. This was explicitly mentioned, however the Gingerbread platform has no Hindi font, but has UI in the Input Language to change Locale to Hindi.
Issue 36909639 need not be fixed for this bug to be resolved. It can be resolved by issuing an errata for Gingerbread release notes, or it can be resolved by adding a DroidHindi.ttf font to Gingerbread. This bug should stand as it is as long as the release notes are not corrected or DroidHindi.ttf added. If DroidHindi.ttf is added, than we can open another bug report about Re-ordering. It is pointless to talk about re-ordering when there are not fonts in the AVD (since this bug is about the AVD).

I can't read Nepali text in my galaxy ace phone. it is a shame because all other members of my family can in their cheap phones. It is really embarrassing. And google aspires to be and flaunts android as the most popular mobile os. You still have a long way to go google. You simply can't reach there by disregarding indic font rendering and the feelings of 20% of the world population.

I am writing this text in English, so that Google can read it and understand it clearly. We Indians do love our language and would like to see the same in Andriod via any kind of update, I do see inclusion of languages like Arabic, Chinease etc. in my HTC Wildfire S, but I feel it's quite disgusting that we have to go through the workarounds to get "Hindi", what's the use of your home page in hindi, if we can't see it on our phone, Apple supports it to the "T" why Google is so insencitive to this matter its quite hurting.

1. Install Opera mini web browser. Here
is android market link.
2. Enter “opera:config” in address bar.
3. Go to end of page displayed. There would be an option “Use bitmap fonts for complex scripts”, change its value to “Yes”
That’s it. You should be able to view the hindi, marathi, tamil, telugu etc languages in android now.
Enjoy.
Note: In step 2 make sure you delete the “www.” before entering opera:config. Also, you must be connected to net for changing these parameters.
Edit: If you have couple of minutes, please go to:http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1618
and just post a simple comment, “We want Hindi font support by default in android”. There were 5000 comments for Arabic language support and it was included in gingerbread.

I've confirmed that complex script rendering works on latest Android - and not just in the web browser
Many more Indic scripts now appear to be supported and render without a problem on Nexus running Android JellyBean. Hindi should no longer be a problem so long as your device has tis version.device
(There even seems to be rendering support for some scripts, such as Tibetan, for which there are no font or keyboard layouts included yet.)
