please add this feature. either an audiobook player or the mediaplayer being able to
memorize last position in an audiobook chapter and play from there. also following
filenames rather than ID tag. .mp4 support would be great, as most of my audiobooks
are in that format.
I am reading a LOT of audiobooks on my iPhone. not having a suitable audiobook
player on my HTC Hero is a pain and keeps me from giving the iPhone away.

We have released an audiobook player for the Android called Ambling BookPlayer.
There are three editions of the player with the Lite and Personal editions currently
available on the Android Market. The Pro edition is yet to be released. You can see
more details athttp://amblingbookplayer.com/ Because the android platform does not
support playing the m4b audio format all the people with m4b audiobooks are still NOT
able to play these audiobooks. Many people have been contacting me asking how they
can play their m4b audiobooks. Please make it a priority to add support for the m4b

Love to have as much audiobook support as possible. Preferably with a sleep timer

bookmarked MP3s would be great as well, but so would Audible format, or better yet
invent an open source alternative that doesn't suck, but allows people to buy
audiobooks in a reasonable format for a reasonable price.

Rename your m4b files to m4a and the default music player on Droid plays it with no
problems. Two minor issues, though: 1) Does not remember your place in the abook file
if you, say, go listen to an mp3 and them come back, and 2) Obviously no chapter support.

Let's use a little more discretion when labeling features vitally important. What may
be important to some is not necessarily vitally important to developers considering
overall feature/bug priority. Your opinion actually carries less weight when you make
exaggerated claims.

Sort the issues tab by stars. If you need to scroll to see this issue, well then I
think you get the idea. Take a second to read over some of the more well-written
enhancement requests and you'll notice that they aren't simply selfish whinings, but
instead contain real supporting details which build a case for developmental priority.
Obviously I care about this feature too, but let's keep it honest, shall we?

Yeah, actually, I see where you're coming from. But then again, I do see why people add comments too.
It's what they want, they bought the product, it's something we want added to it. We're consumers after
all. But I see what you mean, don't get me wrong. Not much says anything constructive apart from a
few companies/ developers who are making products that would benefit from this format. Anyway, this
is irrelevant and just taking up space on the page. I do agree with what you're saying. But, for example, I
just added my comment like someone would make a little note next their name on a petition. No harm
in it. Fair point nevertheless.

182Flying, that link you gave was very informative, and works on my G1 just as it
should. I copied over an audiobook (mp3 format) into a /podcasts directory, and the
music player picked it up in the podcasts playlist. I then played a file to around
halfway in, stopped it & exited the music player, and played a music file with a
different music app (Tunewiki). When I went back into the stock music player my
audio book was exactly where I left off. Thanks for the info!

Jayson, that's great news. Was anything a hassle? I'm assuming that with you being

recommend I go ahead and purchase the new droid then? Either way, glad it helped for
you.

Just rename your m4b audiobooks to use .m4a file extensions, and drop them in /podcasts. You won't be able to

Jayson & 182Flying...Placing an mp3 in the /podcasts folder on a Motorola Droid does
allow bookmarking to work as described, and it's pretty easy (m4b does not, and
didn't try m4a). My overall feedback on the Droid is very positive - if bookmarking
was the only thing holding you back...go ahead. For google or independent app
developers that may be following, although this is a partial solution, many of us
are actually looking for a more full-featured support of m4b format. For example, I
in have files that have sycnchronised text and audio - I'll need to keep the iTouch
until Android supports playing full m4b files. We are still looking for google or
an app developer with more know-how than I to implement full support for m4b.

I tried m4a and it didn't work. It was an m4b file that I simply renamed so I still
want to tinker with it some. I will convert an MP3 to an M4a, with no bookmarks. I
use a program called Audio book converter (great if you have an iPod and want to add
chapters to an MP3 audio book with Chaptermaster). Looks like my little system won't
work on the android. That's too bad.
Good news, you can use the beta version of audacity to convert the m4a file to an
MP3, assuming you have all the downloaded addons it takes to create an mp3 - Pretty
simple. If you want a walk through, I can give it, but it will take a few days to
figure out how my system is set up. I just set my dad up to do it and he is a audio
book maniac
oh, in case anyone missed it. You have to go on to the highest directory in your
micro sd card, create a folder named podcasts - all lower case and with the "s" (I
made that mistake). Put the audiobook mp3 in that folder. On your android (i have the
moto droid), go to your stock music app, hit playlists, then podcasts (it will show
up if there are mp3s in the podcasts folder) and play to your hearts content.
It stinks that I can't bookmark anything, but saving my spot is the next best thing.
Thank you

If you are looking for bookmarks check the Ambling BookPlayer which will
automatically track as many as 150 play history bookmarks in each audiobook (you can
configure how many you want tracked), and lets you use undo and redo buttons to jump
back to where you were, or you can view all the bookmarked locations, with the date
and time you were listening there, and jump directly to any one of the positions.
The bookmarks also track across audio files if your audiobook has more than one audio

necessarily going to have everything built in. but what it does mean is that people
have the ability to add to it, without actually being affiliated with those that

Astro player is good in that it will play m4b, which is a pleasant start. It has a good bookmark feature.
My problem is with it that you can't seek within the track. you press a later point on the play bar, but it
just starts. Again. But it is only in beta and says it only has 'partial' m4b support, so fair enough. Good
temporary solution at the moment :)

To listen to audiobooks, I use combination of audiobooks-to-podcast conversion script
http://skliarie.blogspot.com/2009/12/audiobook-as-podcast.html
and a CarCast podcast player
http://andappstore.com/AndroidApplications/apps/Car_Cast
CarCast allows to stop and resume in the middle of an mp3 file, which makes it ideal
for audiobooks. It also pauses the playback on incoming phone calls.

Yes an audio book player would be excellent. If doing so let's do this right and cover all the bases as far
as formats aswell. This copy write protection is fair enough but all these players need to support these
formats so what is purchased on itunes can be played on an andriod "mp4, m4b" and the like. It is great
the are protecting copywrite but if you can't play your digital purchase on all the device you own the
purchase is now a hassel to use and becomes somewhat proprietary to the brand of player you have at

AA support is what I really want. Seemingly it's on Audible's '2010 roadmap' - but I
want it NOW :)
Lack of it does seem a little bit strange with Amazon owning Audible and my Nexus
coming pre-loaded with the amazon music store app. Surely it's not that hard to add -
and if it had the 'air' component (to get the books) I'd be quite exceptionally happy.

I went from the iPhone to a Droid and was very upset with the lack of a good solution for audiobooks
(particularly being used to the iTunes iPhone way). I use audiobook converter fro Audible purchased content, and
sailing media sync to transfer it to my Droid. On the Droid I use Ambling book player.
This allows me to download from Audible and use the books exactly as I would on the iPhone except with my
Droid. I am perfectly happy with this and it is just as easy and elegant as it was with iTunes iPhone.

The issue isn't strictly the inability of Android to play audio book formats. There
are quite a few decent apps on Android market place that will allow you to do just
that.
I'm in no way saying that as there are apps I don't want the functionality in the
core player, merely that I'm happy to cough up a few dollars to somebody that's put
the work in as the Android dev team couldn't be bothered.
Actually that's a little unfair pinning it on the dev team. I work in software and I
suspect there's a finite dev budget that's allocated politically. e.g. default IMAP
client on my Nexus is absolute pish - but the gmail one is quite nice. Somebody
somewhere decided that budget should be allocated in that way. It's a pain, but I can
understand why. Fortunately due to the open source nature of a load of Android, the
developers of K9 addressed the shortcomings of the default IMAP app and once I'd
found it, I'm quite happy.
The issue is the DRM that's on 99% of legitimately obtained audio books. I pay for an
audible subscription that gives me 2 books a month in the .aa format.
On my ipod I can go to the website, select a book and it downloads and appears in
iTunes automatically. Then just need to sync my ipod and I have the book available
for my listening pleasure.
On my old WinMo phone, I could actually browse and select the book online and
download it and play it without even having to go near my PC (audible air and audible
player).
On Android I would currently have to:
Download the file to my PC.
Pay to use a bit of software to strip off the DRM and convert to say an unprotected
M4B.
Copy this to my phone.
Pay for an M4B player to them play this back (but as I said, this isn't really a
major issue).
My issue is with Audible making me jump through all these hoops to play stuff I've
bought (it's easier/cheaper to just pirate the book as an MP3 and convert to m4b with
a free util, than pay somebody for software to strip the DRM from the book I've paid
for so I can put it on my Nexus).
So just to re-iterate, my contribution to this thread is addressed to Audible. Why
they haven't bothered making proper Android apps is beyond me. I keep on getting questionnaires from them with 'Android' as an issue to select. Amazon bought Audible
a while back and Amazon have a deal with Google (hence the amazon music store being
present in the ROM of my phone).
Audible seem to be in some state of confusion/lack of political direction after their
purchase (judging by the odd emails of response various people have received from
their Android enquiries).
Android SDK is available to Audible. Audible is owned by Amazon. Amazon has given
Google money to get presence on the phone I bought. Could they all please
collectively get their arses in gear to actually make it all work together. I can't
for the life of me see why Google appears to be trying to make me pay somebody else
for an audiobook player - and Audible seems intent on driving me towards ripping
audiobooks from usenet. I'm just a poor little owner of a Nexus, who just wants to
legitimately buy audiobooks and stop having to carry around my f'in Ipod.

James while I agree with your sentiments re Google and Amazon/Audible the issue became how do we do this? I
addressed what I felt was an elegant and workable solution to the existing problem. Yes, Google and Audible are
sitting on their hands and need to get off their asses and code for Android for this issue, but I really don’t want
to wait for them, and spending a few dollars solves this problem (the American way) ;-(
I really don’t care what their reasons are for the delay (and yes, I get the same surveys from Audible, and have
the same 2 credit per month plan). As a software developer, like you I am not used to waiting for others and if
there is a solution already there, why bother.

@stevehy - I'll fess up to using Macsome's software to strip the DRM from my Audible.com books as you do,
but honestly, I'm not sure it's "legal" to do this. Isn't removing the DRM a violation of the DMCA? As long as
you're not sharing, who's going to know/prosecute; and in my opinion it's certainly "ethical" and "moral" to
strip DRM from stuff I've purchased so I can play it on any device I own, but I'm not sure it's legal in the
strictest term. I don't even think you could use the "making a backup copy" argument, since all you need to
do to backup theaudible.com files is copy the DRM'd file to another location. Heck, you don't even need to
back them up as long as Audible's still in business - just re-download any time.
That said, I'd recommend that we'll probably get more response from Audible than Google, and it couldn't
hurt to take the 2 minutes I just took to go to Audible's help center and sign up for "interested in" and "want
to beta test" Android compatible software.
Leo LaPorte, for those who don't listen to them, is pretty tight with Audible, and he's constantly saying that an
Audible client for his Nexus One has been promised as "imminent" from Audible to him. Keep our fingers
crossed.

DaveAultman using audiobook converter is legal as long as you don’t distribute the non DRM audiobook to
anyone other than the rights holder for that book. From Macsome:
Macsome AudiobookConverter works with iTunes and sound recording technology to convert audio books. So
it keeps the users on the legal side.
I agree that anyone interested should go to the Audible site and select help, then issue 36903751 and sign up for the
survey.
BTW, Leo Laporte keeps complaining that he can’t listen to Audible books on his Android device even though I
tweeted him this solution. I guess ‘kvetching’ is good for listenership. :-(

on "TWIT" claiming Audible would have a client out 2 weeks ago, ya, pfft! I have now

Thanks for the plug about saffire player! I am the developer behind it. Webarnesca is

I am just about finished with the Librivox integration. I have a little more testing

Once that is complete its a short jump for podcast support since that is really how

This is the only thing holding me up from a conversion from my iphone. I HAVE to
have audiobook format with m4b. I have a massive audiobook library and don't want to
lose all my formatting and LARGE single books. I don't like having hundreds of
individual audio files per book, so I need to see Android support large m4b files.
With the way Apple is going, I don't want to support them with my business as they
are becoming the Naz1's of the tech world it seems, very controlling to the point of
relegating the user that likes to tweak to the jailbreaking crowd, and making this
technically a breach of agreement.

the reaction of iPhone users when I demonstrate that just about everything they can do,
Android does too and then some. The audiobook thing is really letting it down.

Don't bother with Saffire....it does NOT play audiobooks (m4b) files. It loads them, and says it's playing them, but
there is no audio. Tried it with several audiobooks that I listen to all the time on my iPod. This is really lame....I
just don't understand why someone can't make a simple application for this.....

I use my Android device (Droid) for everything. It is my audio player, note taker, internet look up, navigation system, portable phone, game device and more.
What it isn't currently is my audio book player. This is really frustrating since many of the books I purchase from Amazon.com or some other online store are in M4b format. Since they are copyright media I cannot easily convert them to a format which the Android device can play.
Ambling BookPlayer seems like one of the better players for Android but it's a waste to get any player for my device if Google's OS won't support the m4b format.
I am really surprised Froyo does not support m4b. It would be a great help if Google could roll this small support feature into their next or up coming release.
I know everything is a priority and everyone has a top concern but with the book market becoming more and more popular since the iPad came out and the eInk devices are dropping in price... one market that Google could offer that they others currently lack is to support common audio book formats. It will provide a slight edge over the competitors since I will then be able to read or listen to a book of my choosing on my Android device.
You will also make loyal Google users and fans such as myself very happy and my life much more convenient.
Thanks and keep up the good work.

m4b is not a standard format, either is m4a. The former is used by Apple Inc. to identify copyright protected audio files and it needs other files to work together. If you need to play an unprotected m4b file, try change the suffix to .m4a or .mp4, at least my G1 already plays them.

I too would like you to support M4B. I've ripped my audio books to M4a format and then renamed them to m4b so that Itunes & IPODs will treat them as audio books. Although I can rename them back to m4a, I prefer not to if possible since I find ITunes to be a superior library management tool and because I like the way that they are handled by the player and because I don't want to have duplicate files - except for the extension.
I not sure what the difference is between protected and unprotected m4b files are, but I would like your eventual solution to work with either situation.

Really? "I guess I have to get an iphone because android can't play protected files?"
Instead of rejecting open software because it can't protect protected content, reject overprotected content because it can't be used in open environments.
Just add support for the m4b format and don't worry about the fact that some m4b files are encrypted and those won't work. Let them not-work while everything else does work. Let that legacy model die of malnutrition instead of feeding it.
Of course librivox can't compete with Audible.com for content, but
weread4you.com and amblingbooks.com and some others sell books that are playable in regular mp3 players. No drm. Reward their superior attitudes with success and their inventory will grow and we won't all be forced to put up with Audible.com "my way or the highway" any more.

In the digital age we live in, where everything has an RSS feed and podcast attached to it, not having built-in M4B bookmark reading support is a make it or break it feature. Nothing against Google's Android, but the music player is sort of what makes the iPhone an end-all portable media device. I really hope people are working on making the media player look, feel, and act much more user-friendly. I see a lot of room for improvement. And this is coming from a guy who has an iPhone, but wants out of the walled-garden that is Apple products. Save for the random text messages being sent to the wrong person, this issue and maybe video editing not being as feature rich as the iMovie app, I really want to get an Android device. But again, this is a make it or break it feature. I'm a podcast junkie. M4B's make podcasts fun. So why can't Android make M4B podcasts easy?
jo...@ashbyte.com <jo...@ashbyte.com> #257
I too would like to pull for the m4b format. Contrary to the opinions of some people who obviously haven't used it, e.g. bw.aljex, m4b has other features than triggering your offensive-practices alert. I don't know if it's actually encumbered, but the format allows for aggregating large numbers of tracks as "chapters" in a single file, with headers and section titles, even different cover-art for each chapter. It requires a player which can remember location, etc.
I too like to buy audiobooks, and the CDs which I have used typically has higher consistency than things like Audible. (I have no idea why). Regardless, I have lots of audiobooks which would be very tedious to extract from m4b. I don't have the DRM to deal with, just the format.
I do wonder why this is so complex of a problem, but I am not a developer. Can anyone HALP us?

I started using the Ambling BookPlayer Pro to play *.m4b files that I created myself from CDs. If you rename the files to *.m4a the Ambling Bookplayer Pro does a good enough job that I no longer use my ipod for audio books. Not an ideal solution, but it works pretty good.
mk...@gmail.com <mk...@gmail.com> #267

do...@gmail.com <do...@gmail.com> #268
Pleaseeeeee Google fix this.
I have spent literally about 12 hours trying to get this to work. I've tried Ambling and all sorts of other audio book player, podcast apps and regular audio file players. I tried this with both m4b and m4b files renamed as m4a and I've had absolutely no luck. The only app that kind of works is powerAmp. The problem with PowerAMP is that there's no easy way of navigating through a 2 hour long file with many chapters. The touch on the progress bar does roughly land you on chapters, but there is no granularity and if chapters are close together it's impossible to hit the one you want.
I love android but this has proved to be a huge annoyance for me, since now I need to manually convert each downloaded magazine, which ends up being very time consuming.

+1. Just my observation: Google would not be hurting developers by supporting this format. There are dozens of media players in the market; some better than others. They do their own features (bookmarking, sleep timer, etc.) but they ALL support ONLY whatever formats that Android supports. Does anyone know why this format was left out? Is it locked down by someone?

This is not a 'nice to have' it's a must have. My phone contract is up and I want to consolidate my music player and phone into one device. I can either go iPhone or Android, and if Android won't/can't support audiobooks (.m4b) then I won't/can't support Android. This issue has been open for nearly a year and a half, it certainly seems that it is not a priority and will not happen.

jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #308
I want m4b support, but this request thread goes back two years. So I don't imagine it's going to happen. It's safe to say, factually, "Users have been requesting M4B support on Android for years, and Android has not made it a priority. If you have M4B files and want to play them, you should buy an Apple product, where M4B support is native." Correct?

I recommend the Akimbo Audiobook Player. I've been looking for a player with these features for years.
sa...@gmail.com <sa...@gmail.com> #317
What really pains me is this: most m4b are indeed just m4a files that could be played out of the box if there was an easy way to add .m4b to the list of media extensions and many problems would be solved.
Then in step two add a decoder for the bookmark and coverart stuff (it is an mp4 file after all).So even if the file reader omits the extras and presents the single chapter subfiles as one continuous track (seekable to use bookmarking in the player as is currently done with mp3) that would make 99% of audiobook friends happy.
Don't care about DRM and encryption, that is easily removed if necessary, the additional metadata however cannout be stored in an mp3 file and is quite useful in any capable non android player.
I recommend Saffire as a workaround, at least it has some support for m4b.
Conclusion:
- MP3 is NO replacement for M4B
- DRM is not needed
- M4B support without DRM is.
+1

m4b support is important for Android to compete with the iOS. It is much better for listening to audiobooks. With new devices aiming to support various media and entertainment needs - this is an important one, where Android is lacking.
Thanks for adding it.

Please support m4b on android, if this happens before x-mas, I'll tend to buy and android based phone instead of an iPhone!
sw...@gmail.com <sw...@gmail.com> #321
I just switched to Android and apparently it was a big mistake, because now I have to log around my iPhone to listen to m4b podcasts/audiobooks. The fact that Android doesn't support them is not even as ridiculous as the fact that there are precisely zero Android apps that support speed adjustments on m4b/m4a playback. Getting full support for m4a/m4b playback (even if it's for non-DRM versions only) should be a top priority. Meanwhile, I'm returning my GSII and going back to an iPhone. If history is any guide, this thread has at least another couple of years of life ahead of it...

I have have, however, tried the amblingbookplayer and it seems to work all right but it seems to stop every 15 minutes or so after a sound has been heard (it seems unrelated to any arriving emails or sms). When I start it it works all right for the next 15 minutes or so. Have any of you had the same problems?

I have an android Samsung Galaxy, and I use the app "Smart Audiobook Player" it did take some searching around and a whole lot of trying the different programs but it plays m4b's well (all my books are that, so can't say anything about other formats), and uses the embedded chapters with no problem. It's FREE! And it's got a widget so you're not constantly futzing with the phone. I'm quite pleased with it. I can even create a directory of books (think "Harry Potter") and load them and have it play continuously or jump from book to book within the series with the rew and fwd icons. File placement is manual though. It remembers where you stopped off (unless you pull the battery).
But there definitely needs to be more support for the m4b on many *no to apple*
fronts!

suiting given that the phone is typically with us all day and during long periods of inactivity, we
should have an option to encourage ourselves to educate ourselves (audiobooks) rather than killing
time with games.
