Setting up the remote with XBMC Dharma and later
Featured
Updated Mar 20, 2011 by phree...@gmail.com

XBMC Configuration

  1. Start XBMC, navigate to SYSTEM and select Settings:

  2. Select Network:

  3. Navigate to Services and make sure the following options are enabled:
    • Allow control of XBMC via HTTP
    • Allow programs on this system to control XBMC
    • Allow programs on other systems to control XBMC

Also make sure to remember the port setting (here 8080). If any other program like uTorrent already sits on the same port, choose a different one!

Android Configuration

  1. Make sure your Android device is connected to your home network via Wi-Fi.
  2. Open up the app.

You'll be notified that the app doesn't know where to connect to. Click on Settings in order to get to the hosts setup page. You can also navigate to it later by pressing Menu -> Settings -> Manage XBMC Hosts.

  3. You'll see a blank page with a message how to add a new host.

  4. Press Menu on your Android device and select Add Host:

  5. You'll see a form where you can define how to connect to your XBMC box:

  6. Enter a name (since you can have multiple XBMC hosts stored for fast switching). Also enter the IP address or host name of your XBMC box. Make sure there are no spaces at the end, otherwise the remote will fail to connect. The other settings are for advanced usage and not important for now.

Also make sure the port setting is the same as the one you've entered previously in your XBMC setup.
  7. Select OK and go back to the main page. You should see all the library items popping up:

You can switch XBMC instances by tapping on the version box and selecting a different instance:

Problems

Please, first of all, read the FAQ, there are already answers for most of your questions. If you're having general connection problems, open up a browser on your desktop PC and type:

http://192.168.0.100:8080/xbmcCmds/xbmcHttp?command=GetSystemInfo(120;121)
With your IP/port settings of XBMC of course. If that works, use the browser on your Android device for the same URL to make sure it's not a network problem. If you see a version and a date that means XBMC is running and your network is set up correctly. In that case, post your problem to the forum or the Issue Tracker. If you're getting timeouts or other connection errors, please fix them first, since they are not related to the Android app.

Wow! It's totally awesome! :D Works PERFECTLY with my Samsung Galaxy S II and latest (to the day) XBMC Windows 7 install! Thank you so very much!!

Comment by davidcol...@gmail.com, Oct 8, 2011

Thank you so much for this! It works great with my little Samsung Prevail from Boost!

The "who is calling" function is covered by the pause, I wish I could move it so that it's not covered. Either way this is really nice.

Comment by B.Spring...@gmail.com, Oct 18, 2011

Really nice work guys... Absolutely amazed by how smooth it works (eventhough I have an extensive collection of... everything ^^ )

Cannot connect using username:password works without

Comment by andreas.sommer87, Mar 15, 2012

Using XBMC 10.1, setup works without problem, I can list movies etc. Playing a movie works, and the playback time is shown, but I can not pause/stop, no "button" in the remote control screen does anything. Ideas?

Comment by JohnDad...@gmail.com, Mar 18, 2012

It's me. It's always me with this stuff. Missing something here or there! While the pictures and step by step is nice, I guess I need help with Step #6. I create a name and enter that IP, 192.168.0.100 or .1 but,I do not connect. I'm also confused as to if I should enter port numbers and what number? Please help? Thanks!

Comment by Robin.Mu...@gmail.com, Mar 18, 2012

This worked perfectly. Took me 5 minutes to set up. I have a few minor suggestions. While playing a movie and perhaps while playing a song and you want to search to a specific time-index I suggest that when your finger is dragging the search bar it would be nice if the time your finger is at, so to speak, shows as time elapsed dynamically to make it easier to search. Also the message(sms) service would be nice if you could only show that you recieved a message and not what it contains as it might be personal and you might be watching a movie with a friend. Anyway. Just my two cents. Thanks for an awesome application and media-center.

Comment by Adag...@gmail.com, Mar 31, 2012

It wont work i get a 401 error but the port and ip are correct
