Supported Hardware

Wireless Tether for Root Users needs netfilter-support compiled into the kernel. This means that the Linux kernel on your device needs to have the features (CONFIG_NETFILTER and CONFIG_IP_NF_IPTABLES) enabled. If you have an ADP G1, please read ADP15KernelUpdate, otherwise you will need to find a firmware/kernel with these features. The developers of Wireless Tether are unable to help with other types of devices (but donations of hardware/etc would help ;).

Device Android Version Firmware Supported Kernel Comment
Android DevPhone 1 Android 1.5 Official HTC ADP1.5 Yes Kernel-Update (netfilter-support)
HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1 Android 1.5 Custom Firmware Yes Netfilter-support is included in most custom kernels/firmwares
HTC Magic (Google branded / 32B-Boards) Android 1.5 Custom Firmware Yes Netfilter-support is included in most custom kernels/firmwares
HTC Magic (32A-Boards) Android 1.5 Custom Firmware Yes Netfilter-support will be included in most custom kernels/firmwares ;-) HTC has not published kernel-sources (netfilter support - re-compile of kernel not possible) [1] Kernel-patch is NOW available which allows to build a bootable custom kernel. [6] This patch does not come from HTC - it's the result of great community-work. Thanks to TigerTael, rayman84, Radix999, setenza01, gboddina, Maxisma (all @ XDA) and zinx (@ Freenode).
HTC Hero Android 1.5 ? Yes (see comment) ? WEP-Encryption not working.
Samsung Galaxy I7500 Android 1.5 ? Yes Netfilter-support is included in some custom kernels/firmwares Samsung has not published kernel-sources (netfilter support - re-compile of kernel not possible) [3] [4] Samsung has published the kernel-sources in the meantime. [5] Question is now if it's possible to bring the wifi-interface into ad-hoc or infrastructure mode. Any help appreciated. Samsung Galaxy I7500 is NOW supported. Thanks to drakaz and modaco.

Comment by steve.au...@gmail.com, Jan 18, 2010

Hi , just bought a HTC magic. Can this support latest HTC magic phone though my firmware ver is 1.5.

Comment by music4da...@gmail.com, Jan 19, 2010

Another vote for the Motorola Cliq. If you need me to extract something from the phone, let me know. I don't have it rooted, but would be willing to do so if it would help the development of this project.

Comment by off...@gmail.com, Jan 21, 2010

I successfully tether my notebook via bluetooth with this program (version 2.0pre1) installed on my rooted motorola milestone (android 2.0). Wifi does not seem to work for me, but didn't try a lot :) http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wireless_tether_2_0_pre1-eclair.apk

Comment by rodec...@gmail.com, Jan 24, 2010

@offspr can you explain what you did to get it working?

I have a rooted milestone with android 2.0. I installed wireless_tether_2_0_pre1-eclair.apk, and configured it to bluetooth mode. Is there anything else I need to do? Right now rfcomm on my laptop gives a "Connection refused" when I try to connect to the phone.

Comment by timothy%...@gtempaccount.com, Mar 18, 2010

I don't have access to create a bug report, so I've included it here: Which device (manufacturer, type)? HTC Eris with Verizon Which firmware is installed? eris_0_2.zip What version of wireless tether are you using? 2.0-pre8 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Launch android-wifi-tether 2. Press to start tethering 3. Message pops up: "Tethering started with errors! Please check 'show log'." 4. Log contains: "Loading wlan.ko module... done Configuring WiFi? interface... done Activating WiFi? interface... failed Enabling NAT rules... done Enabling IP forwarding... done Tethering now running... done"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Expected: Activating WiFi? interface... done I saw instead: Activating WiFi? interface... failed

Please provide any additional information below. Let me know if you need to know anything else and thanks for a great app!

Comment by timothy%...@gtempaccount.com, Mar 18, 2010

This now works on the HTC Droid Eris. To fix the issue I mentioned above, the following needs to be done: adb shell $ su #and authorize the su on your phone # ln -s /system/xbin/ifconfig /system/bin/ifconfig

Comment by cassio.hui, Mar 25, 2010

just wondering, which version should i install for milestone 2.1?

thank you very much!

Comment by wlars...@gmail.com, Mar 30, 2010

Got it to work Perfectly on my HTC Droid Eris. I followed the steps provided in this guide http://www.thefuzz4.net/home/AndroidPhones/Eris/HowToRootYourHTCEris/ErisRootRoms.aspx and used Firmware verison Eris 0_5_4.zip it worked out of the box.

Be sure to follow the guide completely, spent like 2 hours trying to figure it out you must do all 4 parts of the guide or it won't work.

Comment by tangode...@gmail.com, Apr 7, 2010

Can HTC Desire (Android 2.1) be used with the Nexus One version of this software? It uses a HTC UI and I have no idea if I brick my phone or not if I try to install this.

Comment by bake...@gmail.com, Apr 25, 2010

Will there be support for the HTC Incredible?

Comment by tracy.mi...@gmail.com, Apr 30, 2010

Version 2.0.1 confirmed working on rooted HTC Droid Eris running custom 2.1 ROM. No special fixes or modifications were necessary. If you have problems and there are no errors in the log, try setting your web browser to use your provider's proxy server. (i.e. on Cricket Wireless I had to set it to use wap.mycricket.com port 8080).

Comment by meng...@gmail.com, Jun 3, 2010

I know there isn't a published root hack for HTC Incredible (Android 2.1), so I'm sure that being a requirement first is there planned testing for this device and this app?

Comment by ctmorri...@me.com, Jun 4, 2010

I just tested on a Sprint HTC Hero with Fresh 2.1 ROM and it seems to work just fine for my MacBook? Pro running Snow Leopard. Thanks!

Comment by ben.bech...@gmail.com, Jun 7, 2010

Comment by todd.lan...@gmail.com, Jun 12, 2010

Hoping that now with the Incredible rooted we'll get support for it soon. This is my top app for the G1 can't wait to use it again on the Incredible.

Comment by tmacfan4...@gmail.com, Jun 13, 2010

The Incredible works with Evo firmware. Here's a tutorial from XDA-Devs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700436.

Comment by samuel.b...@gmail.com, Jun 15, 2010

T-Mobile's MyTouch? 3G Slide was just rooted today -- it would be awesome if support was expanded to include this handset. I just tested with stable and experimental builds and neither worked.

Comment by robr...@gmail.com, Jun 17, 2010

That is a tragedy. Was just considering a MyTouch? for exactly this purpose.

Comment by b1ga...@gmail.com, Aug 20, 2010

It does works on my magic 32b, cyanogen 6.0 rc3; however once it is started, it cannot be stopped (it is stopped, and then it starts again).

Comment by gmar...@gmail.com, Aug 23, 2010

Galaxy S/Captivate and 2_0_5-pre8 worked for ad-hoc pc->phone wifi tethering but... not with phone->Ap wifi enabled at the same time. also lot's of weird results trying bluetooth (two big enable icons appear)... and none owrk... BUT!! most disturbing is now I have no phone->AP wifi... will not connect.

Comment by gmar...@gmail.com, Aug 23, 2010

nevermind... it looks like an AP issue (ithink)... but I was able to connect to it before... and after 2_0_5-pre8 can no longer... but I can to other APs

Comment by strayduc...@gmail.com, Aug 30, 2010

Version 2.0.2 (found in android market) is solid on Sprint HTC Hero running stock (rooted via Universal Androot) Android 2.1 (software number 2.27.651.6). Seems to always broadcast network as AndroidTether?? regardless of your settings but I don't consider that a serious problem.

have not tested WEP as access control via MAC address looks tastier...

Comment by johnyja...@gmail.com, Sep 8, 2010

Hi, I use for weeks the "wireless_tether_2_0-pre10-Spica_0_2.apk" version and it works very good. No ideas for the next versions. tx PS Sometimes but very rarely the spica reboot during the tethering sessions

Comment by maschdr...@gmail.com, Sep 10, 2010

Using wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9.apk on an HTC Hero GSM, rooted, Froyd Villain 1.5 ( Froyo 2.2) works perfect with my Macbook (10.6.4)

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this great piece of Opensource Software.

P.S. Probably state in the FAQ device table that 2.x ROMs probably work fine (depending on the ROM / Kernel) for Hero

Comment by dip...@gmail.com, Sep 10, 2010

wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9.apk works great on Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate) running Android 2.1-update1 (2.6.29) - with and without encryption.

Comment by hissme...@gmail.com, Sep 11, 2010

@ diphen...did the wireless tether install prompt you with a suspicious hardware notice from your anvi-virus? I got one and I got nervous and uninstalled the program. Thoughts?

Comment by Chau.Di...@gmail.com, Sep 14, 2010

Verizon's HTC Droid Eris: WEP Encryption is not working! :( I checked the box for "Enable WiFi?-Encryption." Then I left the "Encryption setup method" as it is on "Auto." Although, I have tried the other 2 options as well, iwconfig & wpa_supplicant - all three of which I have no idea what it means or how it works. Then I setup a P"assphrase" with 13-digits as it says. I changed the SSID name (not that it matters to this issue.) And I left all the other settings as they were by default. I can still see and use my Android tethered wifi network unsecured - without having to enter the passphrase code! Yikes!

2-0-5-pre11 works great on rooted Samsung Captivate with stock AT&T rom. Was able to tether both windows and Linux computers without any problems. Just wake the phone up when the computer is trying to connect.

Comment by paogoo...@pcpao.org, Nov 2, 2010

works great on samsung captivate (rooted, stock ATT rom). Not sure if this is possible, but it would be awesome if the wifi network showed up as an access point instead of a computer-to-computer network...some hardware with wifi capability (printers, ds's) won't connect to computer-to-computer networks.

Comment by Brad...@gmail.com, Mar 4, 2011

I was having no luck using the wifi tether, but once I switched to bluetooth (PAN) I have had no problem whatsoever. I'm using an Atrix 4G. I'd love to be able to use wifi, but for whatever reason, my laptop won't connect even though it sees the ad-hoc network.

Comment by shi...@elite-systems.org, Mar 5, 2011

2.0.7 wifi tether works but bluetooth pan doesn't work at all for Samsung captivate. It may be a limitation of the bluetooth stack though. Froyo 2.2 Stock Rooted.

version 2.07 Droid, FroYo? 2.2.2, Build FRG83G Connected to router Wifi, cell tower out of range, on press 'start tethering' dumps router WIFI connection. Droid then cycles for Wi-Fi: Scanning, Obtaining, Disconnect. Wireless pc can tether in this state, but of course 'no internet'. On press 'stop tethering' can go to Droid Wi-Fi settings and reconnect to router, continue browsing, no tether. Shouldn't I be able to have both?

Hello gang love your work! I just got an LG revolution on Verizon, stock image, rooted with OneClick?? 1.9.5. can load up WifiTether?? and lesser versions. it will run, start up, and show itself to my laptop, etc, but connections error out. I am able to get a ugly hack of EasyTether?? 0.9.3 working, and I can report with the 4g I can talk AND be online via the laptop. It's also sick fast. But, EasyTether?? needs a USB connection, and my battery slowly drains to zilch even while tethered (it's not a great battery to begin with, I have got to get the 3000mAh battery).

I'd love to use it again - maybe there's a fix I missed.... would love a reply

Comment by itsav...@gmail.com, Jul 12, 2011

@TMin I too have LG Revolution, rooted. I've been looking for a way to use WiFi?-Tethering, but no luck so far. I have been using PDANet successfully over USB, similar to how you've been using EasyTether?. The problem with the battery going dead is because a computer USB port only provides 0.5 amps of power, not enough to power the phone on 4G and charge it at the same time, that's why the stock charger is 1.0 amps. Replacing the battery with a larger one may buy you more time online, but eventually it will discharge too.

I have installed the Bumblebee 2.4 ROM on my LG and that is what I have tested this APP with. for the VM users be sure to change your User Agent string in your web browser of choice, to the UA string used by the Android browser. That way you don't draw attention to yourself by violating the VM Terms Of Service.

Galaxy Tab working as Galaxy S with Rooted Gingerbread using patched kernel from humberos (http://www.humberos.com.br/). WPA CCMP support via softap master mode, not tested with netd (Will do this latter).

I need Galaxy Nexus support, too, but I would encourage everyone to donate so that the developer knows his efforts are rewarded. I donated. Did you?

Comment by dlbanger...@gmail.com, Feb 2, 2012

BDLIGHT: What exactly did you download for your Samsung Galaxy Prevail? I am not sure what I am supposed to be searching for in the android market. I searched on the version number alone hoping this would bring up whatever it is I am supposed to download, no luck.

Thanks.

Comment by olivier....@gmail.com, Mar 17, 2012

I'd like to connect a Galaxy Tab (3.1) thru Xperia X10 (2.1). The problem is adhoc /infrastructure wifi setting (shame on Android). After searching I found this tether who looked good but I get stopped by netfilter-support !

I would make a donation if it worked.

Comment by olivier....@gmail.com, Mar 17, 2012

I found a solution by takling the problem on the other side ! Check this video to get adhoc wifi on the Galaxy Tab : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itGz_0fB6jc

Comment by marty...@gmail.com, Mar 29, 2012

I'm using the Samsung Infuse and wifi tether works great.

Comment by gxg3...@yahoo.com, Apr 30, 2012

3.1 Beta14 worked with Verizon Droid Charge (Samsung SCH-I510) running stock Android 2.3.6, configurating as Samsung Droid Charge, Softap for Samsung (master), Enable Wifi-encryption, Hide SSID. Only some options won't take effect unless restarting the phone. I had sumbitted a new issue.

Love Hide SSID feature, and this feature let me to donate. Keep up the execellent work !!!
