Setup Howto for HTC Desire, HTC Incredible, HTC Aria, HTC Wildfire

(These extra setup-steps are not required if you have Android 2.2 (FroYo) installed.) A rooted handset is mandatory.

The "HTC Desire", "HTC Droid Incredible" and "HTC Aria" need some extra setup-steps to make "Wireless Tether for Root Users" work.

(First you need to root your device. Please use google-search to find a guide/tutorial).

1) Download a HTC Evo 4g system-dump (use google search - I bet you will find one)

2) Extract a file named fw_bcm4329_ap.bin (located in /system/etc/firmware)

3) Mount your sdcard

4) Create a directory named "android.tether" (without quotes)

5) Open this directory and copy/move fw_bcm4329_ap.bin into it.

6) Rename fw_bcm4329_ap.bin to fw_bcm4329.bin

7) Install the latest versions of "wireless tether"

Update

Depending on which device you have and firmware-version you need the latest experimental release of the app:

Experimental

My notes:

Droid Incredible Rooted via unrEVOked mount SD card create directory android.tether copy fw_bcm4329.bin

2.0.2 was not working, could see the SSID, but never contacted a DHCP server

Installed 2.0.5, good to go.

@all: This is NOT a discussion board! If you think there is something wrong with the app open a new issue here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/entry

FYI (2.0.5 pre2 on stock rom with unrevoked rooted desire)

If I do nothing after install, I can't even make DHCP response.

After I put fw_bcm4329.bin into /sdcard/android.tether/ , DHCP gave me an address but Internet connection still not working.

Finally I execute

ip route add table gprs 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.2.254

with root privilege, and everything got work!

Comment by steinker...@gmail.com, Aug 3, 2010

Finally worked for me. Thanks! I was having the same issue: no ip address. I had to put the fw_bcm4329.bin on the other card (I think the main memory, not the SIM card), and used the "experimental" version of the software, 2.0.5 pre 6. I have an Incredible Hardware version: 0002 Firmware: 2.1 update 1

Comment by spyce...@gmail.com, Aug 3, 2010

aria, stock rom, rooted. followed bin install on sdcard with 2.0.5_p6. works like a charm with ipod. works w/ encryption, too.

bravo!

Comment by philpal...@gmail.com, Aug 5, 2010

Comment by Mark.Slo...@gmail.com, Aug 7, 2010

I'm not sure what I did to get it to work this time but I did try turning off wifi manually before launching the tethering app. I have htc incredible, unrevoked, froyo and 2.0.5 pre 7 is now working for me. Thanks for all the excellent work.

Comment by szeli...@gmail.com, Aug 7, 2010

Comment by chese...@gmail.com, Aug 17, 2010

Working on a Cyanogenmod 6 RC3 T-Mobile Dream G1. Thank You! Might I assume infrastructure mode is impossible???

Comment by DavidZen...@gmail.com, Aug 21, 2010

I have installed the latest experimental version (2.0.5-pre8) hoping to see the non-adhoc for more than 1 PC as well as WPA support.

I still have only adhoc & only wep encryption.

Any suggestions?

Comment by NicoleA0...@gmail.com, Aug 31, 2010

I can't get it to work. I have an incredible and have followed all the steps that are required. I have a co-worker that has an Incredible that connected his to my my netbook HP mini and it worked fine. But when I rooted mines and folled the steps about on my computer it says it is connected and on my phone but no transfer of the download and upload numbers are moving to show I am connecting or authorized clients. I am frustrated and need help. I am not good with computers. Is there something I need to do on my computer. I try to open internet explorer and it says page not found. I am giving up. Is my phone messed up or something?????

Comment by firewate...@gmail.com, Sep 15, 2010

THANK YOU! Worked great on my Incredible, manually forced to 2.2, following the instructions here. I originally tried the one on the market and nothing would connect. I used the latest experimental version, pre9, here and now it's working.

Comment by stru...@gmail.com, Sep 15, 2010

Took some playing around and somehow got to work on my HTC Incredible running Froyo 2.2. Like others, installed latest Tether (2.0.5-pre9) and laptop would see wireless network but not connect. In the end, I got it working, but I'm not exactly sure how. I'm 60% convinced the problem has to do with the WiFi? setting on the phone. If you're stuck, play around with running Tether having Wi-Fi on and off before running. Sorry I can't offer a specific fix.

Comment by dlong....@gmail.com, Sep 29, 2010

Worked great after installing 2.0.5 pre9 on my incredible... Its like sprinkles on my rooted Froyo!!

Comment by karlan...@gmail.com, Sep 30, 2010

working on wildfire rooted 2.1

Comment by axxc...@gmail.com, Oct 1, 2010

Yep, works on HTC Wildfire rooted 2.1

Comment by nskhal...@gmail.com, Oct 3, 2010

Just got this to work for me. HTC Droid Incredible, rooted, 2.2, S-ON, Wireless Tether 2.0.5 pre-9. My black Macbook recognizes the Droid as a WiFi? network. Under Tether 2.0.2, my Macbook recognized the Droid as a computer-to-computer network. Really satisfied so far. I hope it holds up.

Comment by gandmcl...@gmail.com, Oct 4, 2010

Worked on my Wildfire rooted stock ROM 2.1 using wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9.apk with a custom SSID & WEP key.

The fw_bcm4329_ap.bin can be found as a single file, rather than having to download a complete dump as described above.

Comment by thanh...@gmail.com, Oct 10, 2010

It works great if I do not turn on Enable WiFi?-Encryption. But my PC and iPod Touch could not access with WiFi?-Encryption turning on.

Comment by bessmert...@gmail.com, Oct 12, 2010

worked great on wildfire rooted with stock rom. use latest experimental version and copy bin file as shown above..

Comment by koehler....@gmail.com, Oct 16, 2010

Great application. Just thought I'd share my experience. I could not get an IP address from the Tether while running 2.0.2 on my Incredible, upgraded to 2.0.5 pre11 and it works perfectly. Laptop is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Great job adding WPA2 and Infrastructure mode!

Comment by Stephani...@gmail.com, Oct 18, 2010

Great app; really! I'm on a rooted HTC Dream/G1 flashed to Cyanogenmod's last update w/ Froyo 2.2. All I did was upload on SDcard, opened Linda File Manager, navigate to .apk, installed from card and ran. Works well, Thanks a lot! :)

Comment by ahmad.q...@gmail.com, Oct 24, 2010

On a rooted HTC Incredible (rooted via unrEVOked on stock OTA Froyo with HTC SenseUI) with the stock kernel. Was unable to tether using the Market app (version 2.0.2) but after reading this page, following the directions, and installing the 2.0.5 pre11 version, my MacBook? is connecting just fine to the phone's 3G network. Thanks for all the great work!

Comment by MercuryK...@gmail.com, Nov 18, 2010

Incredible SLCD, Froyo, Rooted with UnRevoked3?, Market Wireless Tether did not work. Uninstalled Market version. Loaded wireless_tether_2_0_5-RC1.apk WORKS! I have much man love for you now!!! Donation on the way to you, but I'm taking all the credit from my wife ;)

Comment by Akava...@gmail.com, Dec 24, 2010

HTC Aria, Android 2.1-update1. Rooted with Unrevoked3 and works flawlessly (encrypted, MAC Access Control, etc) using weirdit's fw_bcm4329.bin located here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1496809/fw_bcm4329.bin Cheers guys!

Comment by Smtg...@gmail.com, Mar 8, 2011

The easiest way to install this app (for devices like the Aria that don't allow 3rd party app installs) is to download the android SDK and grab the adb file and place it onto your desktop. Open Terminal (OS X and Linux) or Command Prompt (Windows) and use the "cd" command to navigate to your desktop folder. then type adb install NAME_OF_APP_AS_IT_APPEARS_HERE.apk with your device connected in USB debug mode. Wait until you see "Success" and then you are done. NOTE: Root is required and Superuser privilges must be granted for app to work.

NOTE: Mac users, if the adb command refuses to work try using ./adb instead of adb

i just wanted to throw in there that the market wireless tether worked on my rooted inc from day one with no workarounds or anything, that was when i had cyanogenmod 6, later i got cy 7 rc1 and realized that the version available here was newer than the market one, i updated with no apparent change but everything still works. now i have cy 7 rc2 (but am planning on going back to rc1) and everything is still working just fine. fantastic app by the way, allowed me to finally ditch comcast, now everything i do online goes through my inc, netflix streaming via wii and surfing via netbook. thank you so much for this.

Comment by leichris...@gmail.com, Apr 7, 2011

I am HTC Desire and Android 2.2, but it does not work! And, you can consist a subnet, but you can not connect the Internet. Why??

Comment by craft...@gmail.com, Apr 13, 2011

Working great on my HTC Desire!!

Comment by Jordan.D...@gmail.com, May 2, 2011

HTC Incredible, Cyanogen 7.0.2.1 Android 2.3. Added the .bin file to both card and phone storage as I had some trouble with a few other builds, could see SSID but no IP.

2.0.8 pre1 worked, online now. Maybe I'll try 3.0 in a few weeks again.
