SMS Backup

Thank you for all the nice feedback I'm receiving through the Android Market and by e-mail. I really appreciate it and it's nice that the application is helpful to a lot of people.

  • If you want to recommend SMS Backup to your friends, press the menu button, then choose "Share".
  • You can absolutely use SMS Backup for free without having a guilty conscience! But if you insist, donations will be gladly accepted. :-)

Christoph Studer <chstuder@gmail.com>

This application allows you to automatically backup SMS messages on your Android device to Gmail.

You'll be able to browse and search your incoming and outgoing messages - neatly put into threads - under the "SMS" label in Gmail. To browse your backed up messages, log into Gmail and click on "SMS" in the labels box, which is located in the left sidebar.

Prerequisites

You need to have a Gmail account with IMAP enabled. See the Enabling IMAP Gmail help page to learn how to enable IMAP for your Gmail account.

Installation

SMS Backup can be downloaded and installed from Android Market. Go directly to the Android Market listing by clicking the following link on your device: Android Market listing. Click the "Install" button and confirm the required permissions.

Configuration

After starting SMS Backup, enter your Google username and password. Note that the password will be stored unencrypted on your device. It is, however, only used to log into Gmail using a secure SSL connection and is not readable by other applications. See below for a description of the advanced settings.

Usage

Initial Backup

It is important that you perform the first backup manually. SMS Backup needs to know whether you want to upload messages currently stored on your device or not. After having entered your login information, SMS Backup will ask you to perform a first sync.

If you choose to Backup, SMS Backup will start backing up your messages to Gmail. The maximum number of messages backed up at a time is set to 100 by default, so if you have a lot of messages, it will take multiple runs to completely backup everything.

If you choose to Skip, nothing is sent to Gmail and all messages currently stored on your device are simply marked "backed up". This option is handy if you previously uninstalled SMS Backup and do not want to send your messages again to Gmail. Please note that any messages arrived after you last uninstalled SMS Backup and this initial backup won't ever be backed up to Gmail.

After you performed your initial backup, SMS Backup is ready to run in the background and finish uploading all of your current and future messages.

Auto Backup

By default, SMS Backup runs in the background to automatically backup any new arriving and outgoing messages. Incoming messages are backed up 20 seconds after they arrived on the device, while outgoing messages are backed up after a maximum of 30 minutes.

You should regularly check if there was an error backing up in the background by starting SMS Backup and looking at the state. In the future, we plan to put up a notification when an error is encountered during a background backup.

Manual Backup

You can at any time initiate a manual backup by starting SMS Backup and clicking on the "Backup" button. The progress of the backup will be shown on the screen.

Stop Ongoing Backup

Click the "Stop backup" button in order to cancel an ongoing backup. The next backup will continue exactly were the current backup left off. (Since version 1.1.0)

Update

Either look for Android Market notifications for new application versions or regularly check for updates by starting SMS Backup, pressing the menu key, then choosing "Update". This will send you to the Android Market listing of SMS Backup where the installation status changes to "Update available" if there is a new version available.

Share the Love

If you enjoy using SMS Backup, you can recommend this application to your friends by e-mail using the "Share" menu item.

If you LOVE SMS Backup, feel free to donate an amount of your choice! It will be much appreciated.

Advanced Settings

The advanced settings screen allows you to configure the following settings:

  • Mark as read (Since version 1.1.0)
  • When this setting is enabled, SMS Backup will mark the e-mails generated on Gmail as read, otherwise they'll appear as unread.
  • Gmail label assigned to SMS
  • SMS Backup will assign this label to backed up messages in Gmail.
  • Maximum number of items per backup
  • If your device gets slow when backing up a lot of messages at once, this settings allows you to limit the number of messages sent during one batch. Any messages that are not backed up during that batch will be backed up as part of a later batch.

Required Permissions

SMS Backup requires the following system permissions:

  • Full Internet access
  • This is required to be able to connect to the Gmail server and send your messages. Note that the connection to the Gmail server is SSL encrypted.
  • Prevent phone from sleeping
  • This will keep your device awake while SMS Backup does its work. Usually, SMS Backup is only active for very short periods and should not draw a lot of your battery.
  • Read SMS or MMS, receive SMS
  • This is required to be able to actually make a listing and send your messages to Gmail.
  • Read contact data
  • This is required to be able to associate every message with its sender or recipient, which will be assigned to the from or to field in Gmail, respectively.

one of the coolest and important app. keep the good work

Comment by cmobilex...@gmail.com, Jan 31, 2009

For now the best sms backup android has to offer. thanks

Comment by jeeper...@gmail.com, Feb 2, 2009

Same problem here. SMS Backup will not log into my Gmail account. IMAP is enabled, my password has been verified numerous times, I've tried with just my login name and with my full email address, and nothing works.

Comment by TylerSpi...@gmail.com, Feb 5, 2009

Yeah, I am also having a problem getting it to log in. I have enabled IMAP and have tried my username and username@gmail.com and neither seems to work as the login.

I want to use the app, but I am unable to.

Comment by ssterwo...@gmail.com, Feb 8, 2009

Unfortunately I does not work for me? IMAP enabled, password and inlog is correct.

Comment by DevonSum...@gmail.com, Feb 18, 2009

Works like a charm! Just what I have been looking for. Future idea: separate by conversation subject, by using MMS subject.

Comment by hupperwa...@gmail.com, Feb 23, 2009

Perfect for keeping the old stuff and deleting it from the phone. Doesn't work for multiple recipient messages.

Comment by stario...@gmail.com, Feb 23, 2009

Works just as described...thanx

Comment by silla.su...@gmail.com, Feb 26, 2009

I have the G1 and have downloaded the SMS backup and absolutely love it. Is there anything similar on the iphone?

Comment by ueberto...@gmail.com, Mar 3, 2009

Doesn't work 4 me as well, just entered username and password, imap is activated. Would love to use it, but don't know how, could anybody help me with this problem plz uebertommy@googlemail.com

Comment by chrisr...@gmail.com, Mar 12, 2009

I love this app. The only thing that is a problem for me, is that Gmail seems to group up to 100 messages into a conversation, which makes searching through them painfully slow on the G1. What would be great, is if we could specify special strings in the Subject line, for instance I would like to group by contact and date, so I would have the subject line "SMS with %Contact% on %Date%" or something of the sort.

Comment by yowza...@gmail.com, Mar 20, 2009

Trying this out for the first time. I have thousands of SMS messages. One contact alone has over 1000. I've tried setting to both 100 and 200 messages per backup. My phone totally locks up while it is working. The messages are getting uploaded, but very slowly. I'm estimating it took an hour to do 100. Sometimes it will finish, other times it never finishes. Twice now my phone has totally rebooted. Is this normal? Once I get my initial backup done, will it be much more responsive?

Comment by cocobunn...@gmail.com, Mar 25, 2009

I love this application! The only thing I don't like is whenever it does sync, even some of the messages that I deleted get synced. But what would be cool, is if u could choose the messages to be synced and make folders for them to be automatially synced to. That would be awesome! But its still great. Love the work.

Comment by evertsem...@gmail.com, Apr 10, 2009

Works like a charm! Very usefull!

Comment by kingpim...@gmail.com, Apr 13, 2009

hey wuzs im trnya get to my sms backup and i can find it

Comment by marie.s....@gmail.com, Apr 14, 2009

Does this work for MMS as well? And yes if there isn't already a grouping mechanism would be great, whether it's all sms by date, sender, or something like that.

Will give this a try today, thanks!

Comment by chicana....@gmail.com, Apr 18, 2009

i love sms backup! i send and receive about 5k texts a month so i cant keep them on the G1.. it will slow it down. only one little suggestion... for it to save the time/date of the text on the backup :) thank you soo much for this great app!

Comment by adiba...@gmail.com, May 2, 2009

is refusing to do all my messages where thread exceeds 100

Comment by DJLay...@gmail.com, May 5, 2009

Comment by PdeWi...@gmail.com, May 28, 2009

Great app, also like the oppertunity to view origional send/receive date

Go on with the good work!

Comment by nder...@gmail.com, Jun 9, 2009

didn't work for me, could it be the problem that was set up for 200 SMS ?

Comment by nder...@gmail.com, Jun 9, 2009

heya guys I found out why it didn't work for me! I had the password with some spaces for example: "my password gmail" after I made it like: mypasswordgmail" SMS Backup worked so you who had the same problem try this like me. Well done for this nice app needs to fix this in order to be able to use strong password with spaces.

Comment by salih3, Jun 12, 2009

Excellent app., thank you. It'd be great if you could incorporate "call log" back up as well. gunsal

Comment by wvr.mob...@gmail.com, Jun 23, 2009

Great app, just brilliant!! Installed it, logged on to my Google Apps account and found the SMS messages nicely labeled in my inbox! Thank you!!

Comment by sandeeps...@gmail.com, Jun 30, 2009

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! I'm SO glad I found this app, you're the man, Chris!

Comment by bol...@gmail.com, Jul 6, 2009

Anybody know how to make this app works with strong passwords ? I'm not gonna change my G password.

Comment by mehtad...@gmail.com, Jul 6, 2009

Hi,

Have you seen this? http://news.mobile9.com/s60apps/2007/04/04/gsync-by-psiloc/ I use this on my Nokia and its awesome! Would be nice if your app could format the emails in a similar way. PS. You beat me to it. I have written an app for myself that does this but not very user friendly. If you need a hand, let me know!

Comment by louj...@gmail.com, Jul 7, 2009

recently I have the problem in logging in, IMAP is enabled, my password is verified everyday when I read my gmail, I've tried with just my login name and with my full email address, and nothing works. Please help.

Comment by digitalj...@gmail.com, Jul 8, 2009

I forgot my gmail password (since I use a separate account for my sms)... how can I retrieve this? said it's stored unencrypted?

Comment by jas.kal...@gmail.com, Jul 8, 2009

Downloaded this today and it worked fine. Just one, perhaps rather stupid question, but I need to know, does it only back up onto the Gmail account I have? Does it by any chance send anything to the person whose details appear in my Gmail contacts?

Anyone help on this please. Many thanks!!

Comment by john.ris...@gmail.com, Jul 10, 2009

Excellent app, thank you!

My only wish is to add a time zone feature so my text messages download as CST (where I live) instead of GMT.

Comment by olivier....@gmail.com, Jul 14, 2009

It would be nice if the synced sms could also go the inbox first. The ability to put a second tag would solve this I guess.

Comment by n.avil...@gmail.com, Jul 22, 2009

Awesome app! Loving it!

Comment by 4co...@gmail.com, Jul 23, 2009

this is awesome! the first sms backup tools i really love! thanks. but i do find a little glitch. In my case, if the first message in the thread is sent out by me first, it will start to backup from the first reply, ignored the first msg i sent out. that the only problem i have. thanks for the great work!!

Comment by SJsms...@gmail.com, Jul 26, 2009

THANK YOU!

Comment by chiomaja...@gmail.com, Jul 27, 2009

Comment by ch.u...@gmail.com, Jul 31, 2009

well its the best software but the problem what i feel is that it shouldnt be limitize for backing up 200 only it should be unlimited.

Comment by kamchuen...@gmail.com, Aug 4, 2009

excellent application. If it could restore messages from gmail account back to the phone if you ever do a factory reset, it would be great.

Comment by mrk...@gmail.com, Aug 12, 2009

I agree with kamchuencaleblai. Backing up to Gmail is great, but being able to restore back to the phone would be even better.

Comment by pattison...@gmail.com, Aug 12, 2009

Great app! Just love it! Perfect!

Comment by ponym...@gmail.com, Aug 14, 2009

Same problem here. Google account data is correct, IMAP is enabled, but the app is still not working. Any idea why?

Comment by benoit.l...@gmail.com, Aug 19, 2009

This is really a good idea, implemented the right way. Great app, thanks a lot (and thank you for publishing the source code).

Comment by va110r...@gmail.com, Aug 27, 2009

Really fantastic app, and exactly what I was looking for. Donation definitely on the way. :)

Comment by heng...@gmail.com, Aug 30, 2009

undoubtly the best application needed by far. Linking it to GMAIL and using Outlook just brilliant.

Great Job

Comment by orrego.c...@gmail.com, Aug 31, 2009

it works... but, generaly people backup something to 'restore' it later, not only for 'forward'. that functionality must be included.

great job.

Comment by leandrom...@gmail.com, Sep 17, 2009

Hi guys, I was backing up the SMS and during the uploading the app froze :( . The problem is that these SMS are already set as backed up (since the app is saying that there is no items to backup) but they are not in my Gmail... My question is,

how do I backup these SMS again???

Thanks in advance.

Comment by timtmobi...@gmail.com, Sep 27, 2009

Will the Text messages automatically restore back to the device after a master reset or something like the contacts do with this application?

Comment by kasperha...@gmail.com, Oct 2, 2009

Can this app restore the sms'es from the gmailaccount?

Comment by danilo.a...@gmail.com, Oct 7, 2009

The app does its work perfectly :) I'm trying to figure out if and how i can restore them on my phone. Any hint?

Comment by arzhe...@gmail.com, Oct 14, 2009

Worked perfectly until I changed my Googlemail password. SMS Backup will not update new password and fails login. Did not display error message so unaware that backups were not occurring.

Comment by robrecht...@gmail.com, Oct 19, 2009

Is there any chance someone could make a Windows Mobile version of this? It's exactly what I'm looking for...

Comment by floris...@gmail.com, Oct 19, 2009

works like a charm!!! Many tx!

Comment by jacobisr...@gmail.com, Oct 26, 2009

I've noticed a couple mail header fields that have e-mail addresses at your domain, studer.tv. Can you please explain the field and confirm whether or not you are sending additional copies of our SMS messages anywhere else, like to your domain?

Thanks,

Jacob

Comment by jacobisr...@gmail.com, Oct 26, 2009

I'd like to see a whitelist feature added where I can select people I want to backup, or even both a whitelist and blacklist, where I can select people I never want to backup from. This would be helpful for those times where I wouldn't want a record of what I say to some people - we cuss!

Jacob

Comment by tests...@gmail.com, Oct 28, 2009

Works great. However I have a question (similar to Jacob's): I've noticed the domain name "smssync.studer.tv" in the details of the backed up SMS emails, which sounds strange. Do you send user's personal data (phone numbers, person names or sms content) to another site/account/etc other than user's gmail account?. I have found nowhere information on how SMS Backup deals with privacy. Thanks.

Comment by yangguo...@gmail.com, Oct 28, 2009

I love this app! It helps alot in backing up my sms to gmail account. But is it only a one way backing up process? After backing up, is it possible to get back those sms from gmail into the phone itself? - Full Duplex possible?

Comment by marama...@gmail.com, Nov 3, 2009

Ok, it works great but...it's not a backup tool!

When I do a data backup I hope I can restore it too.

Comment by xiadong...@gmail.com, Nov 3, 2009

cant't restore SMS from gmail!!!

Comment by Coram.Pa...@gmail.com, Nov 4, 2009

Excellent idea, one that is sorely needed in Android and that would definitely give it just that much more of a 'wow' factor. If both SMS AND MMS could be backed up to AND restored from gmail that would make this app basically a must have. The whole point of backing up data is to make it available for restoration at a later time ( I'm sure you know that already ;) ). Keep up the good work!

Comment by moodyg...@gmail.com, Nov 6, 2009

Can you read our backed-up sms??? Since it looks like you are sending the backups to your studer.tv ...???

Comment by Martin...@gmail.com, Nov 19, 2009

Do you have a privacy policy????

Comment by g...@woeishyang.com, Dec 1, 2009

Hi,

Does this work for google hosted applications?

http://google.com/a/

Comment by alexvem, Dec 3, 2009

Why are some SMS missing From and To fields (the other part) while others have them. Doesn't seem to be any common denominator, some have both email and number, some only number, etc.

Comment by xster.net, Dec 10, 2009

A restore could be nice though Amazing job nevertheless

Comment by Miroslav...@gmail.com, Dec 11, 2009

Great job!

Just to add again, I see none managed yet to restore these sms's... if there is a way, please post, I didn't even checked if it's possible to restore, now im stuck empty :)

Comment by havardo...@gmail.com, Dec 16, 2009

Great app!

Just one feature request: It looks like it only backs up from the phone's memory. If it could also back up from the SIM card that would be fantastic!

Thanks!

Comment by harisdot...@gmail.com, Jan 5, 2010

I made a backup of 4 sms i had on the phone. In gmail are tagged correctly but the subject message says "SMS with ....." We dont need "SMS with", just the sender would be fine. Also in gmail we have the time it was backed up and not the time the sms received. Why? I may need to backup my sms every week. Inside the message it lists the date received correctly, but why not on the list view of messages when you browse all messages in gmail?

Comment by benjamin...@gmail.com, Jan 8, 2010

Cheers :)

Comment by mazin.ma...@gmail.com, Jan 9, 2010

Comment by andy.vis...@gmail.com, Feb 8, 2010

Superb works like a dream on HTC Hero. Thank you so much.

Comment by Joer...@gmail.com, Feb 11, 2010

Very cool app. Would be perfect if the timestamp of the emails would be the same than in the sms (especially outgoing sms). Or the outgoing sms are backed up faster. Otherweise it could happen that the email-thread is not in the same order than the sms-thread, if I understand right?

Comment by eugene.a...@gmail.com, Feb 16, 2010

Hi, this is a great app, thank you! I have 2 comments: One "bug" fix - sometimes phone numbers have spaces in them. This does not work properly when the app generates the email address for a number. e.g. phone number "+61 412345678" (note the space after +61). The app generates the email address line (within the eail source) as

From: "Name Of Person" <+61 412345678@unknown.email>

This does not work properly in gmail (email addresses should not have spaces anyway).

Can you add some code to replace spaces with, e.g. underscores (), when generating the email?

My other request is, it would be nice to be able to customise 'my' name instead of the app using my gmail login name for the from/to field of SMSes sent from/to me. A field where I can put in a display name for myself would be great.

Thanks for a great app!

Comment by jessicam...@gmail.com, Feb 17, 2010

After downloading your app, every single sms was gone, and I had information on those messages that were important and I didn't have stored anywhere else yet. Wasn't the whole point of this app to back up my sms, not delete them? Any suggestions on how to get my sms messages back that your app deleted?

I'd really appreciate it Thanks

Id like some type of stealth mode so i can put it on my girlfriends phone without her knowing it, i know it wasnt designed for this but itd be perfect for it.

Comment by grantupt...@gmail.com, Feb 26, 2010

Since going back to work on an Upton/Uptain genealogy, I have encountered nothing but troubles. I believe Norton is tracking but the problem persist. I would like some mode or method that would deny all outsiders out of my computer. I do not know how that can be done other than clearing my HP VISTA to its factory state and then shutting it off from cyber space. I need your help. My computer used to be lots of fun. Today, it is the inner ring of Dante's Hell. So, could you clear all except the necessary: Norton, Google and all else required for my pastime? My appreciation would be endless. Thanks, Grant

Comment by kirkeraf...@gmail.com, Mar 3, 2010

The app is great, but for some of my contacts I'm stuck with "unknown" sender. It happens if that contact has an diacritical mark in its name. Maybe some encoding check somewhere?

Comment by TuanAnh...@gmail.com, Mar 4, 2010

sorry if my post is not appropriate but i wonder how to restore my messages from Gmail back to my phone, just wipe it and would like have all them again.

Comment by lassejen...@gmail.com, Mar 8, 2010

I also have the problem with backup-error even though imap is enabled and username+password are correct. Is there a solution yet? - my email is lassejensenat?gmail[.c0m]

Comment by fatchun...@gmail.com, Mar 15, 2010

when i am using SMSBackup, it shows that " the application SMSBackup( process tv.studer.smssync) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

Anyone can tell me how to solve this problem?

Comment by shiffj...@gmail.com, Mar 18, 2010

I love this app but I am having a problem. SMSbackup backs up to an gmail address that is set up to forward all mail into another gmail account. For some reason the SMSbackup mail does not forward. Everything else does.I cannot figure out why this is. All other mail. including other filtered mail with labels (even those that are set up to skip the inbox) forward automatically just fine. Only the SMSbackup stuff doesn't. I have tried everything i know. I have been at this for days. I am incredibly frustrated as I never open the other address and only read the mail in my primary account. Does anyone have an explanation or a suggestion?

Comment by jan%brew...@gtempaccount.com, Mar 21, 2010

Great app! The only problem i'm having is the date, as mentioned above, the backup-date is used instead of the received date. Can this have anything to do with the different US/European(mm/dd/yy dd/mm/yy date format?

Comment by tomma...@gmail.com, Mar 23, 2010

Great app! For those that have the login problem: make sure you have already created the label for your sms in yours gmail account.

Comment by kathrynd...@gmail.com, Mar 24, 2010

Comment by svk...@gmail.com, Mar 25, 2010

Simply Amazing, A great programmer with great idea. Thanks for the app

LIFE SAVER for the Moto Droid since this fucking phone is having the problem with deleting ALL texts on phone at random times...even when auto delete is off. ive seen threads with hundreds of people with same problem...where one day all of a sudden every text is gone and SMS app is empty. this has happened to me 3 times and i lose all my texts including ones i locked...so this app is a life saver! thank you!!!

Very good app, thanks!. I do have one problem though, for some of my contacts I'm stuck with "unknown" sender. It happens if that contact has an diacritical mark in its name (ÅÄÖ). Hope you can fix this.

Comment by larswestphal@gmail.com, Apr 17, 2010

Great app but I was to quick to try it and hit the wrong button during the initial backup. Is there any way to synchronize all the messages to that point anyway?

Comment by mike.c.j...@gmail.com, Apr 21, 2010

I have read through this post and the comments and I am still unclear on a few things. I tried to find a FAQ, with no luck, so here are some questions to help start one.

1. Will this application backup sent messages along with incoming? 2. Will this application backup MMS along with SMS? 3. Does this application run behind the scenes or are there notifications during every update? I would like to install this on my son and daughter's phones, but being 2010, they are pretty technically proficient and they will simply turn this off when they do not want my wife and I to know about their texting. 4. Can you forward to any email account or does it have to be the gmail account registered to the phone? 5. Is there a setting to adjust the frequency of backups? I would like the messages to be able to be backedup upon reciept or send. 6. If a message is deleted before the backup is ran, will that messages or messages still get backed up?

What a fantastic program -- absolutely effortless!!

Comment by zhiyuan...@gmail.com, May 26, 2010

hi, first of all, it is a fabulous program.

one small comment, if i send SMS to my domestic friend, i can send without the country code. but when he replies, the network operator would add country code like +353

it works OK as a conversation in the android phone, but when it comes to gmail, it was seperated into 2 mail conversations.

so is it possible to deploy this feature? of course i will try to change my buddies' phone number to full mode(+35386086xxxx).. this could solve it also...

kindly regards

Comment by beth....@gmail.com, May 27, 2010

I had my phone die and I lost all my SMS message. So I was really happy when I found this app.

It was working fine until I changed my gmail password. Now I get a login error. "Please make sure you enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings and check your username and password." Any advice?

Comment by queen...@gmail.com, May 28, 2010

I cannot find the SMS label in my Gmail, please help!

Comment by jcc...@gmail.com, May 28, 2010

This app rocks! It does just what it needs to do and nothing more. No ads and no bloatware. ATTENTION DEV...before you decide to support your software with ads, give us the option to pay for it! Thank you and keep up the great work!

A couple of things that aren't explained very well above...

  1. he first time you sync, just keep sync'ing until it tells you you're done. It knows what messages it's backed up.
  2. f you are looking for a more permanent way to keep your SMS messages, sync them with this and because they're going to your Gmail account, you can do with them as you please once they're there (ex. email them to your personal account (Outlook based) and save them there as files or burn them or even print them).
Comment by fcabi...@gmail.com, Jun 2, 2010

great idea. But what about a privacy-concerned feature: oauth option for google login. It would be great: is that difficult?

Comment by alvis...@gmail.com, Jun 4, 2010

This app was recommended by http://blog.verture.net/300510/15-recommended-android-applications therefore I gave it a try. Excellent app, just that it does not do what the site quoted. "Backs up your text messages, MMS messages, and call log to the cloud, using your Gmail account as storage."

Doesn't seem to be able to back up MMS and call log.

Excellent app, just wish that I found it sooner.

I was initially a bit confused as to how long the application would take to send email. I kept checking my gmail inbox and waiting for notification through phone. I was about to do some digging for the problem when I noticed a SMS labelled folder. Nice touch.

Keep up the good work!!

I have a G1 (now a relic! hah) and I was having issues with forced closing upon attempting to login for the first backup - apparently, if I have a non-alphanumeric symbol as part of my GM password, the program freaks out. This is just an FYI for those who might be having that issue :)

Comment by jcast...@gmail.com, Aug 13, 2010

I left my cell phone home today by accident. So cool to be able to check my gmail SMS folder and see texts I've received! Thanks.

Comment by mleesho...@gmail.com, Aug 14, 2010

I love this app! My P.O.S. MyTouch? 3G (T-Mobile) needs a weekly master reset and this app keeps me from losing all my text messages.

Each time I reinstall SMS Backup after performing a master reset I get the username/password/IMAP errors. A simple uninstall and reinstall from the Market fixes it though. Yes, it's an extra step, but totally worth it to be able to effortlessly save my texts.

Thanks for the awesome app, and keep up the good work!

Comment by jkurtis...@gmail.com, Aug 17, 2010

I was getting this tv.studer error. I found that I may have caused the error by changing the name of my SMS filter in gmail without changing the label in the Android app. The issue was fixed once I made the two names agree.

This has been working perfectly for months on my Xperia X10. Now it crashes with a "The application SMS Backup(process tv.studer.smssync)has stopped unexpectedly." error. What's changed because the app certainly hasn't. Jim!

Comment by Jim.v.La...@gmail.com, Aug 31, 2010

Update - The "Show in IMAP" feature had become unticked. re-ticked the box and it now works without a problem. Not sure if it was my issue or gmails as I can't remember when I added the "Advanced IMAP Controls" feature from the labs. But probably my fault.

Comment by Brett.R...@gmail.com, Sep 1, 2010

Works like a charm. Unless I'm missing something this app does not have a Restore function. Please add this! Does it require root access and that's why it's not already included?

Comment by gilga...@gmail.com, Sep 21, 2010

It would be nice if you could choose the label before the initial backup, now you're effectively stuck with the default 'SMS'

Comment by hongle...@gmail.com, Sep 24, 2010

Very useful app indeed. :)

Just wondering whether the Auto Backup feature will turn ON the mobile network when it's in an OFF state in order to connect to Gmail server?

And a suggestion... if the app can auto click the "Backup Again" icon until all outstanding SMSes have been sent to the Gmail server, that'll really help those who have years of accumulated SMSes to backup. You can always insert a 1 min pause in between the upload to Gmail to play nice. :) That certainly beats having to monitor the backup process and manually click the "Backup Again" icon, a very time-consuming and tedious task.

Thanks.

Comment by laur...@gmail.com, Sep 29, 2010

I have one question, when you're doing this backup you will have your sms on your device and on your gmail account or you will only have them on your gmail account?

all login problems due to accidentally adding a space at the end of details either/both email adress and password....it happens because on the android phone in order to get up the option to click off the phones querty keyboarad you usually end the sentence with a space....try reentering all info making sure there are no spaces at the end..

Comment by anandaba...@gmail.com, May 2, 2011

Hi, Thanks for the app. I'm looking for a additional feature. I just want the SMS from a person to be saved in Gmail, just like a thread in Android stock SMS app. Example: Right now it saved 16 SMS in a thread at Gmail. When the next day if i get a SMS from my friend it saves the SMS in a new Thread, instead of adding the new SMS as 17 SMS in the same Gmail thread.

Is it possible to make something like this?

Cheers, Anand.

Comment by nifty.an...@gmail.com, May 4, 2011

All my text messages are uploaded but they are uploaded separately by name. I am unable to read them in order. In other words, all the text messages sent by me are in a separate thread so I am unable to read a entire conversation in one email

How would I fix this?

Comment by gilbert....@gmail.com, May 12, 2011

I am having the same problem as the last poster. I did an upgrade to froyo, and when I installed sms backup it was saving the messages in threads with only the phone numbers. Previous versions were saving in threads labelled as my contact were listed, such as: Sally, me. Me, John. Now, there is no conversational flow... it's messages from one person in one thread and messages from me in another. Other than that I absolutely adore this app! Is there a fix? Or a way to get a previous version?

Some browsers / handsets which ship with non-standard browsers are currently not fully supported, there appears to be a problem which breaks the authorisation process, so connecting your Gmail account via XOAuth is not possible.

Some possible workarounds:

Use the stock Android browser for the authentication (you can switch back afterwards) Install a 3rd party browser (Dolphin HD or Skyfire have been reported to work)

Used to work great... but then something changed in it...

It used to out the texts in chronological order of the conversation...AND... it put their name & "me" .. I could read the texts for ever in the perfect order they happened and with who... then a couple of months ago it stopped doing that and it started separating the texts into batches, it doesn't put the contacts' name and it doesn't backup all the texts... it is hit and miss... sometimes it has only my text and not theirs and other times, their text and not mine...

Please put it back the way it was...which was perfect!

Hi! Txs 4 sharing this wonderful app. It was working fine until I enabled 2 factor authentication. Now I cannot backup. I get the Login Error. I've tried: 1. Generating a seperate password for SMS Backup 2. Using the Android password I generated 3. Using my normaly GMail password

I'm using HTC Desire S

Please help.

I logged into my Gmail with no problem, but still have not been able to back up. Each time I've tried to log in, it has taken me to a message input screen to send a text message. What am I supposed to do at that point? There is nothing in the instructions that mentions the message screen, so I'm at a loss -- if I go back from the message input, it makes me log in again. Please help!

I had to hit the Skip button a few times since the phone went to standby when backing up - which caused the backup to stand still. I had it plugged into my PC at that time to charge it.

Comment by knal1...@gmail.com, Aug 11, 2011

For those of you having problems getting it to connect with your Gmail, make sure you are using the right app... searching in the Market—this app was written by Christoph Studer, and has a small Gmail icon in its logo. Once I used this one, it worked right away!

Seems to work fine, hoping i dosent have the 200 message limit (from one person), as the SMS backup + has :-(

Comment by bmk...@gmail.com, Aug 21, 2011

doooooh - this one also only takes 100 in each thread. So if theres a conversation with 349 messages, then you will end up with 4 threads in google.

Is there a way to just back up sms texts between just one particular contact? I don't need to backup every text message on my phone, just the ones from one person.

Comment by konstant...@gmail.com, Sep 24, 2011

I fear this project has been abandoned. I've realized that ever since google+ has been linked to my account my texts aren't being backed up by this program. I've been using it since the G1 was released and continued to use it on the Samsung Moment and most recently on the HTC Thunderbolt from Verizon. I uninstalled version 1.1.1 due to force close problems (that started with Google+ integration) and installed version 1.0.0. I'm getting a password/IMAP issue message now, but IMAP is most definitely enabled and my password is correct. 1.1.0 gives me the same force close issues 1.1.1 gives me. I've tried changing the number of texts to be backed up as well. I've also emailed the developer and flagged the program in the Android market, but nothing is happening. No responses from anyone. This makes me really sad, I used to swear by this application. :'(

Comment by konstant...@gmail.com, Sep 24, 2011

Got the program to attempt a backup with a non google+ account but then it force closed as well. sigh

Comment by whereare...@gmail.com, Oct 11, 2011

This works well to back up all SMS to my Google email account. However, somewhere in the documentation it should state that it backs up all contacts as well. I'd like an option to block the backup of any contacts not associated with an SMS, or to block the backup of all contacts. And I would like to be able to select the contacts for which messages should save, instead of backing up all messages.

Comment by email4m...@gmail.com, Oct 16, 2011

I needed an app to copy my SMS off an old G1 google phone so that I could finally ditch the thing. I was concerned that the apps that were currently available would not be backward compatible. I couldn't believe how effective SMS Backup. The two things you want in an app - "1) read my mind and 2) be as easy to use as possible." The fact that this was also free was a huge bonus! I did read the easy-to-follow instructions posted by Paul Bozzay which clued me into increasing the limit of 200 messages per download. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/back-up-text-messages-gmail-smsbackup-android/ It also further explains the Advanced Setting of Read/Unread. Mega-thanks to Christoph Studer for developing this app and generously sharing it with us.

Comment by kaourin...@gmail.com, Oct 17, 2011

I get this error (and it's not working) :

"Command SELECT "SMS"; response: #7# [NO, NONESISTENT?, Unknown, Mailbox:, SMS, Failure?]"

I'm using 2-steps authentication for google, and I created a new password that I'm using in the "simple text"(advanced setting).

The Tag "SMS" do exist within GMail (created by SMS-Backup (without+)).

OMG! I think it is the best thing EVER!!!! I just wish it could guarantee backup of deleted sms' or even whole threads, because I have lost important information. You know, like the kind of info you don't want to have to ask for twice or you'll end up looking incompetent.

Otherwise it is practically SPOT-ON-THE-MONEY!!

I haven't had any issues with it at all! Did have a blank screen about 5-6 days running it straight, BUT I MUST POINT OUT, that issue could not be attributed to your APP.

PLEASE PLEASE FIND A WAY TO KEEP EVEN THE DELETED SMS' and THREADS and you'll be "Jumping off the High-Dive into a Pool of Benjamins!"

Comment by only1bat...@gmail.com, Dec 14, 2011

This is plain and simple. But i have a few recommendations. The first would be to increase the maximum number of text messages to upload at a time. possible ideas would be to add a 500 and a 1,000 at least. And secondly would be a way to re-download those messages to your phone into your text messages app from there. This would be extremely helpful since i am constantly switching ROMs on my phone. texts stay when i change from ROM to ROM on the same firmware, but disappear when i make a firmware upgrade or SBF down. I have a droid x and i will definitely be recommending this to all of my friends.

Comment by NCarave...@gmail.com, Dec 18, 2011

This was working flawlessly with samsung fascinate. Now on my Droid 3, Android 2.2.2, this application is only backing up my outgoing texts. All the incoming texts don't get backed up! Please fix. This is not useful if you only have outgoing messages without the incoming messages. PLEASE FIXXXXX

I’ve just installed SMSbackup. I see my conversation threads in my Gmail account. I see one email for each side of each conversation. That is, one e-mail with my texts to a number, and another e-mail with texts from that number to me. To follow a conversation you have to switch back and forth. Some threads are blended and show both sides of the conversation, but most don't.

Is there any way to merge these messages so I can have one print that contains both sides of the conversation merged by time so it is readable? I am preparing evidence for court and I need to provide the entire conversation, not just two halves of it.

Comment by JesseBe...@gmail.com, Today (7 hours ago)

Here's a fun one...

I've been using this for years without issue, and suddenly a week ago, all my Backup Labels are being forced into my inbox.

They're still marked as read, but instead of auto archiving, every call, SMS, and MMS sent to or from the phone puts an email at the top of my inbox, which I have to manually archive.

Weirdest part is, I made a new Gmail filter to auto archive these again, and it isn't working!!!

WTF???
