You can manually upgrade your phone back to OTA RC33, otherwise you may be waiting a while for T-Mobile to push everything back to you(some users have reported waiting 3 weeks) and some apps (*cough*twidroid*cough*) no longer work with RC29. The steps are pretty simple, but it takes a little while and, as always, you should be careful or risk bricking your phone.

  1. Complete all of the above steps.
  2. Download the RC29 to RC30 OTA update found here: http://android-roms.googlecode.com/files/signed-RC30-from-RC29-fat.1582cace.zip
  3. Rename it to update.zip and copy it to your phone's SD Card.
  4. Unmount your phone, turn it off, and hold down the Home key while turning it on.
  5. You will see a screen with your phone and an alert sign. Press Alt + L to see the list of options.
  6. Press Alt + S to update your phone to RC30.
  7. Press Home + Back to reboot your phone.
  8. Download the RC30 to RC33 OTA update from here: http://android-roms.googlecode.com/files/signed-PLAT-RC33-from-RC30.zip
  9. Mount your phone, remove the old update.zip file from your SD Card, and repeat the above steps with your new zip file.

At this point your phone is unrooted and completely up to date. You should be receiving the Official (signed) cupcake build OTA in the next few weeks, or you can probably find it here once it's seeded.

Comment by frankspicher, Jun 02, 2009

Following these directions, I get a "UPDATE FAIL" message. I think I'm going to download the file again and see if that works.

Comment by rctrumpet6, Jun 05, 2009

I did everyting and I am now in the process of updating to RC33 and so far everyting has gone exactly how it was told to do it. Thank you!! I will update with success to RC33 later.

Comment by diwanshu, Jun 17, 2009

Can i go directly from rc29 to cupcake?

Comment by JShapz, Jun 19, 2009

the reason why everyone got update fail was because u forgot to unplug the usb cord and unmount ur sd card simple fix i had the same problem

Comment by bosheaf, Jun 19, 2009

Was using manual update Cupcake 1.5:

Worked ALMOST perfectly. The first step did what it was supposed to do and updated, but I had an issue after I pressed trackball down to reboot. Ended up with the multi colored bootloader screen but in the green bar it said "Serial0" and a white bar at the bottom. No matter what I did it didn't move from that screen. Had to remove the battery and reboot without SDcard inside and it restarted in RC29. Thought it bricked, but it didn't. Thank goodness. Just an fyi.

Comment by kevin.a.beck, Jun 23, 2009

wont let me update to RC29. I extracted the .nbh file and put it on the root of my sdcard. I keep getting no image or wrong image error and it wont update.

Comment by omaleem, Jul 30, 2009

bosheaf... same issue! "Serial0"... I did what you and my phone is starting okay at this point.. let's see what I see.

Comment by omaleem, Jul 30, 2009

Awesome, works perfect.. I'm officially on RC 29 ... YEAY!!!

Comment by omaleem, Jul 30, 2009

WOW... RC 29 is so fast...... I wanna keep this!

Comment by ProperPlace, Aug 03, 2009

well the rc29 to rc30 patch didn't seem to fly. "error in applypatch status 246 failure at line 77 \system\framework\.....\core.odex.patch() installation aborted"

seems i'm stuck w/r29 abit; which is of course better than being bricked.

Comment by lilpsycho213, Aug 07, 2009

I was stuck for months. i finally ran into this thread made it real simple and easy!! thank u so much!!!!!

Comment by coburn.matthew, Aug 08, 2009

Posted link to offical Cupcake is broken.

Comment by bustabus2009, Aug 14, 2009

I did this, but i cant passed what i think is rc29 because when i try to log in to my account it says i have no data service, and after rc30 doesnt it give you the otpion to skip that step, its hard to do this when i cannot check my version or radio. Also what do you think would be causing that error in the first place i talked to t-mobile for like an hour and without telling them i had a rooted phone ruled everything out. SO... my only thing left is that i fucked up somehow.

Comment by Hector.Santiago2, Aug 24, 2009

Hey going from rc30 to RC33 i get boot.img corrupt error any reason? I have download it and still getting that error

Comment by RichT.Schwab, Aug 28, 2009

the rc 29 to rc 30 does not work i have downloaded it several times and tryed it extracted and not and it still doesnt work

Comment by MichaelFarese79, Aug 29, 2009

So, if I follow these steps and end up successfully with RC33 (firmware v1.1) will I get the OTA firmware update to 1.5? I mean, is it still pushing out this long after the initial push?

Comment by mariajkil, Sep 02, 2009

I was having problems with rc29 to rc30, so I did some digging and found this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=518835

It takes you from rc29 strait to rc33. My phone immediately began updating to firmware 1.5. Hope this helps :)

Comment by dcorrea78, Sep 08, 2009

For anyone that has done this to revert to rc29 and could not sign into google services:

Press menu at the sign-in screen to look at the list of APN's. I had to delete all the APN's but the T-mobile US APN in order to get my data service working again.

Comment by toconfuze1, Oct 05, 2009

Comment by Alex.Maday, Oct 05, 2009

Bosheaf,

You need to use the Power button to start update ... not the Action button.

Comment by natebelongee, Oct 06, 2009

is working fine for me thus far! going from 30 to 33. then cupcake to doughnut tonight. rooted was fun but the phone keeps restarting since i bought it. i'm sending it back for a new g1 which i will root again. cyanogen rules!

Comment by Bethany79, Oct 07, 2009

Does anyone have the cupcake update? It's not available at any links and I can't find it anywhere online.

Comment by Crossbones32, Nov 05, 2009

ok the best way to install the rc30 is when you download it rename it as update.zip

Comment by Vikarious1, Nov 13, 2009

For everyone not being able to make either of the updates work...when renaming the files, only name them to "update" without the quotes. Don't add a "." or the "zip" part. Mine worked FLAWLESSLY with that!!

Comment by Vikarious1, Nov 13, 2009

I've been here approximately 6 hours trying to get mine to work. I found this thread, and took her advice: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-6785.html The person's name that made the suggestion is pinaytoy, and I have HIM/HER to thank!!! Thank you Pinatoy. So now I have FirmwareV. 1.1 and Build RC33. I went from 29 to 30 with the same trick as stated in my previous post. Just use "update" as the renaming. Haven't noticed much of a difference, as I JUST got it. But I did do a wipe of my phone first. Hope this helps anyone with a headache.

Comment by GRRobillard, Nov 23, 2009

Just name the zip files as "update" without the quotation marks. The phone will automatically call it "update.zip" when you install it.

Comment by JTSwagger117, Nov 28 (4 days ago)

I tried to update it, but i get the Update failed. and everything i try just goes back to the rainbow screen.
