Introduction

Here are instructions for Linux instalation.

DEB

You can simply download one of the deb files available and let your package manager open it or use the Debian Repository set up here on googlecode. If you prefer the second option, continue reading.

The Software Sources line is the following (usually to be added in System -> Administration -> Software Sources, Third-Party Software tab):

deb http://android-notifier.googlecode.com/svn/repos/deb-repo stable main

After that, you can run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install android-notifier-desktop

Or search for android-notifier-desktop in your software manager.

Authentication keys are not provided, your linux distribution may complain about packages not authenticated. You can safely ignore this warning.

After instalation, "Android Notifier Desktop" will be available in your Accessories menu.

RPM

There are RPM packages built for OpenSUSE and Fedora (they differ only on naming standards of architecture and dependencies), you can download and install them directly.

My Linux Distro does not support deb or rpm packages, you insensitive clod

Well, you can get a zip file in the Downloads tab for Linux, but you will have to install bluetooth libraries and libnotify manually to be able to use these features and you will not have a nice menu item created automatically for you.

To be able to use bluetooth communication, you need to install bluez libs for your distro and create a symlink with the name libbluetooth.so to the latest version of libbluetooth.so.X.X.X installed on your system (on ubuntu it'd be /usr/lib/libbluetooth.so -> /usr/lib/libbluetooth.so.3.5.0). The packages that do this for some distros are:

  • libbluetooth-dev on Ubuntu
  • bluez-libs-devel on Fedora
  • bluez-devel on openSUSE

To use libnotify, look for it using your system package manager.

Don't forget to install Java 6! Both Sun Java and OpenJDK work fine, GCJ does not.

Maybe future releases will have packages for your distro...

I have created a Qt client for android-notifier: http://github.com/hades/Cyborg/wiki

Please check it out! Right now it supports TCP and UDP; works in Linux and Windows.

this is pretty cool... one request: how about digitally signing the .dep package?

Comment by Christia...@gmail.com, Dec 3, 2010

Thx, works nicely on Debian and Ubuntu. Seraphyn

+1 to dckc.madprobe The package should be signed. I'm playing with the notifier, ssh, and networking stuff.

By the way: Great software.

W: Failed to fetch http://android-notifier.googlecode.com/svn/repos/deb-repo/dists/stable/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

are these instruction out of date?

@Kiddykoff:

I think it's safe to ignore that error message. You don't need the sources just to use the program. To make the error message disappear permanently, you can remove the sources line in "Settings - Repositories - Other Software" by selecting the "http://android-notifier.googlecode.com/" .. -line that has the word "source" in it.

Works on Ubuntu 10.10 :) THX U!

Comment by cblanq...@gmail.com, Jan 16, 2011

Works on Kubuntu 10.10 (tested ping and missed call). It does not use the KDE centralised notification system but its own. Which is not a problem at all. Great job!

On Ubuntu with vmware workstation installed, it has picked up one of my VMWare private addresses instead of the one that my phone can actually communicate with

You should NOT deliver the Zip file with world-writable folders.

I'm trying to use in Ubuntu 11.04 and I can't.

I have installed the app in my HTC Wildfire S, and also the client in my Ubuntu. After executing the client (click on the client icon) nothing happen. I have tried to send notifications from phone (test notification) and nothing. Then I have tried to launch the desktop app from command line, but android-notifier-desktop does not work.

Thanks in advance

Super app for XPERIA X10 mini pro + Linux Ubuntu 10.04 + lazy geeks ;)

Comment by steve.sa...@gmail.com, Aug 6, 2011

Are sources available for the desktop application? Could it also keep some history, i.e. to allow checking the last few notifications & last known battery state without having to look at the log?

Comment by gcarrac...@gmail.com, Aug 19, 2011

No puedo hacerlo funcionar en Ubuntu 11.04, lo instalé bajando el .deb y no funcionó. Después reinstale por medio de apt-get y tampoco. Aparece el icono en mis accesorios pero no ejecuta el programa.

Gracias.

It doesn't respond on TCP only UDP or did I miss a preference?

Just installed on Ubuntu Natty by way of apt-get and when I try to start, I get a popup window that says "Could not load UI. Make sure you are using the correct version (32 or 64bit) for your system. Both Operating System and java have to be 64 bit if you want to run the 64 bit version of this program."

I am currently running the 32bit version of Ubuntu 11.04 with sun-java6 installed. Just to try other ways, I also tried downloading the deb directly from here, with the same results, and even tried downloading the 64 bit version but that won't even install because it's for a different architecture.

Comment by enob...@gmail.com, Sep 21, 2011

Found the problem when trying from the zip version of the download. The application copies swt-gtk to /tmp before trying to start it, but if /tmp is mounted as noexec, swt-gtk won't start and hence neither will this application. Unfortunately it fails with an unrelated error. Just to test that this was the problem, I remounted me /tmp as exec and it seemed to work fine, although I'm not going to keep my system that way, so unfortunately, I can't use this app.

Comment by grant...@gmail.com, Sep 23, 2011

having the same drama as Oscar... using 11.04 Natty Narwal and the desktop client (32bit DEB package) says it's installed through software centre, but when you launch the android notifier desktop client you get.... nothing.

Any ideas?

Comment by t...@tomandshirley.com, Nov 4, 2011

In 11.04 You need to log in to an 'Ubuntu Classic' session. In 11.10 you need to install Gnome 3, then choose 'Gnome Classic' at login. Then from either method you can launch and configure the notifier. It will then continue to work fine if you revert back to Unity 3D or Gnome 3 with effects.

Works fine in Ubuntu 10.10 e SAMSUNG GALAXY 5 Tank you!
