ALBAstryde takes it name in part from the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), a modern socialist exchange network between Latin American countries. The second part of the name is linked to its historic roots, the Cyberstryde-network which was the software behind Cybersyn, the cybernetic network which was set up under Salvador Allende in Chile 1971-73 to make information about industrial production instantly available to workers and government. ALBAstryde is being developed to be first used as a base for the software of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Nicaragua, which is seeking ways of opening access to its knowledge base under the current Sandinista administration. In trying to find a path to the socialism of the 21st century and making democratic forms of economic planning possible, this system will make information on agricultural production and related data available to the general public. ALBAstryde is being programed as a Django-project, using various apps already available wherever possible. On the client side it is making heavy use of jQuery. The principal language for the project is Spanish, but any other translations are welcome. The coordination of the development of ALBAstryde is being handled as of spring 2009 by SIMAS.
