Who?
Do you spend money? Do you make money? You should have a budget. ActiveBudget is an easy way to track cash flow.
Do you work hourly? Do you freelance or work on many jobs at once? ActiveBudget is an easy way to track work across many projects.
What?
ActiveBudget is not really comparable to Quicken. It does not track assets or liabilities. If you want to get a handle on your expenses, ActiveBudget is for you.
Where?
You can download the source for ActiveBudget here, or use the free hosted version at http://activebudget.org.
Why?
I wrote ActiveBudget because I wanted to interact with my finances in a very specific way. Right now it captures my work flow very well. Want to change or tweak something? Get involved! I'd like to make ActiveBudget a valuable tool for everyone.
If you're a new Rails developer, I hope you can use ActiveBudget as a learning tool. Some things you can learn:
- REST design
- Test Driven Development
- Using Flash based FusionCharts
- Using ActiveRecord Migrations to manage a database
- User Authentication with an API
- How to handle time zones
- How to secure your associations
- The RedBox implementation of Javascript lightboxes
