Requirements:
A-Foto versions 2.x:
Starting with A-Foto v2, the target platform became KDE 4.1.3 (Shipped by "stable" distros in late Fall of 2008). A number of technologies available with KDE4 SuperKaramba (DBus, true transparency, painting into a picture, alph-ing images) are almost a must for the app and become a hard requirement.
A-Foto versions 1.x:
Absolute Minimum: * Python version 2.3.5 * SuperKaramba 0.38 * ImageMagic (needed for Exif-based Jpeg autorotation)
Strongly Recommended: * Python v. 2.5 The development occurs on OpenSuse 10.2 where Python v. is 2.5. Python 2.5 is very forgiving of some programming errors and while a-foto is tested to work before packages are posted, earlier versions of python may complain. Please, report bugs. * SuperKaramba 0.41 While a-foto will run on earlier versions, 0.41 contains some bug-fixes that make a-foto usage a much, much better experience. Most notably, Unicode support (for URL propping or translated strings) is broken in pre-0.41 SK. Please, upgrade and retest your SuperKaramba package before asking for support. * A stable distribution is highly recommended. On some "perpetual bleeding edge" distributions, like Kubuntu, or "development branches" like OpenSuse Factory or Slackware Current the problems come from the underlying libraries. Problems due to bad hand-compilations of system packages were also observed (Some python dependency unresolved, or other fun-to-diagnose things.).
At current time (March 2007) one of the authors personally recommends to use a stable, but "fresh" distribution, like OpenSuse 10.2 (not "factory"!), PCLinuxOS, Slackware (not "current"). "Stable" releases of K/Ubuntu are sometimes stable.
