Case Study: Gaia Online

Who They Are

Founded in 2003 by a few comic book fans in a garage, Gaia Online has become the fastest-growing hangout on the web. Millions of teens come to Gaia every month to play games, make friends, and participate in the world's most active online community. Gaia provides a fun, social environment that inspires individuality and creativity. With everything from art contests and poetry forums to fully customizable profiles and digital characters, Gaia is a place where teens can create their own space and express their individual style.

YouTube and Gaia Online

Gaia Online users have shown a real affinity for the ability to watch videos with their friends in the VJ experience. Integrating YouTube search and the chromeless player gives Gaia Online users a more seamless and comprehensive video experience on and off Gaia Online.

What They Did

  • Added chromeless player to the full VJ experience and in the widget to allow smoother playback, instant seeking, and opens the possibility for users to consume videos synchronously in a reliable manner
  • Implemented YouTube Data API to drive video search results
  • Used YouTube Data API to enhance the playlist creation process (easier searches, better performing previews)
  • Users can import their favorite videos, subscriptions, and existing playlists directly from their YouTube account into VJ
  • Users can query any YouTube member and also access their favorite videos, subscriptions, and playlists
  • Users can add YouTube videos directly to their playlist by just using the video URL, no need to search for the video again if you already have the URL
  • Users can access to entire YouTube video library. Prior to the YouTube Data API, users had a limited selection of videos to choose from in RSS feeds
  • Users can search for videos by relevance or by the raw number of views
